The generally favorable reviews have me excited to play the game. Obviously it'll be different than previous entries, but it seems as though they've done well in keeping the core gameplay of MGS intact.
I should really stop reading this thread and go back to, uh, playing Metal Gear Solid V, but RE: the cassette tapes: the writing in those tapes is actually really good. Way better than any of the cut-scenes, actually, since the tapes sound like real people talking and not teenage goth poetry.
I'm sure this is true. But people like me don't want to spend time replaying a scenario...at least not immediately. What i don't get is why people are complaining about replaying missions.
From what the reviews have said, the gameplay is awesome and varied. You can tackle the missions so many ways.
I will want to replay every single damn one.
If it's a secret ending that you have to replay on harder difficulties to get, how would you have any frickin idea that you missed it unless you read elsewhere ahead of time. The true ending thing is hilarious, just shows who is a good journo and took his sweet time with the game and didn't rush through it like a headless chicken.
Well, yeah, but don't expect it to be anything like MGS3. Think of it as the perfect modern stealth-action game -- it's got the tone and style of old MGS, but it's a very evolved version. People who want that vintage MGS gameplay (and those vintage MGS long breaks between gameplay sequences) won't be super happy.

One thing I'm worried about.
I have Ground Zeroes from the US PSN store, but I'm buying the game in Australia.
Will the saves be compatible?
Wow, this looks like it will dethrone Super Mario 3D World as the highest rated game on Metacritic for this generation.
MGSV a better sequel to Chaos Theory than any Splinter Cell game that came after it.
No.Does it maintain that vintage MGS pacing? That feeling of a fateful, doomed mission full of revelation and surprises?

?I still have hope for delayed/revised Watch Dogs reviews...

No.
The pacing is very off. It's not really story focused like that.
Nope.
I really doubt after dozen of game Kojima will hire better writers
I guess the game will be fine with what they did.

I hate secret endings for this reason.

Accidentally+word of mouth most likely, since even the guide doesn't tell you how to access it.Well how did others find it?
Replaying missions doesn't make a lot of sense. What i don't get is why people are complaining about replaying missions.

i love blacklist. i actually wanted mgs to be more like blacklist. so glad it exceeded my expectations. My impression on playing Ground Zeroes was that it played more like a Splinter Cell game than the older MGS games..... and that got me very hyped about Phantom Pain. Glad to see it's all worked out.
That's actually a good question. I was going to say that MGS4 already lost that feeling thanks to the multiple locations... but actually I have to admit I do remembered the doomed feeling toward the end of that game.
Definitely seems like typical open world lack of urgency.

That's fine, I absolutely loved the gameplay in Ground Zeroes, so I'm not really worried about that part. I 'S' ranked every mission and got 100% completion for GZ, so I feel like I have a decent idea of what to expect from that perspective.Well, yeah, but don't expect it to be anything like MGS3. Good reviews but I am super disappointed in what I'm hearing. Less story. Cassette tapes. Fucking secret ending that you have to replay missions to get? Come the fuck on. I wasn't too hyped for MGS V to begin with despite it being my favorite series. I got the sense from the gameplay and trailers I've seen that it was taking a different direction.
That's fine I guess but really disappointed. Went from a Day 1 because it's MGS to most likely a Gamefly rental for me. Really just sick of every other AAA game being open world.
:l

Especially in a mgs game.
Well, replaying a game on a higher difficulty isn't that much of an obscure task.If it's a secret ending that you have to replay on harder difficulties to get, how would you have any frickin idea that you missed it unless you read elsewhere ahead of time.

Matt Peckham said:If I had to grade it now, 30 hours in, with 80% of the story yet to come, most of the equipment still locked away, my base still a nascent thing, and only a handful of the side missions complete, Id give The Phantom Pain full marks, easy. But if you want to see whether another 30 or more hours changes my mind, Ill be back with a full review before the game launches Sept. 1.

Same as Peace Walker aka the best MGS
I definitely did once think that was the definition of MGS: "Infiltrating bases in extreme situations at the edge of the world before the enemies launch their superweapon"MGS4 definitely did not capture this feeling as well as 1-3, but it was still kind of there. Think Heart of Darkness or Apocalypse Now especially. I didn't feel it whatsoever in PW.
Peace Walker gives you new story missions for anyone that loads up after the credits. It's really not that hidden, one just has to keep playing.
mine too. one of those games that they truly make u feel like a badass based on the game and gameplay. so good.I know Blacklist didn't sell very well, it it was my GOTY and I hope they expand on it soon.
