Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

The generally favorable reviews have me excited to play the game. Obviously it'll be different than previous entries, but it seems as though they've done well in keeping the core gameplay of MGS intact.

I should really stop reading this thread and go back to, uh, playing Metal Gear Solid V, but RE: the cassette tapes: the writing in those tapes is actually really good. Way better than any of the cut-scenes, actually, since the tapes sound like real people talking and not teenage goth poetry.

Yeah, that was my problem with the cutscenes in the past. I always felt like "who the fuck talks like that?!". Glad there is some more realistic dialog in this game. Even more hyped about this game now.

I think the tapes could explain a lot of character motivations. I think the reviews mentioned things like characters in cut scenes doing more and saying less, so you learn about them from their actions rather than long speeches they give describing their motives and beliefs. In other words you'll see a character do something, maybe kill someone, but you won't know exactly why until you listen to the correct tape that reveals their motivation.

What i don't get is why people are complaining about replaying missions.

From what the reviews have said, the gameplay is awesome and varied. You can tackle the missions so many ways.

I will want to replay every single damn one.
I'm sure this is true. But people like me don't want to spend time replaying a scenario...at least not immediately.

Ground Zeroes was sex. More of that is a win, so everything sounds good to me. Return to form stealth game design the utalises the open world as a nice template for diverse strategy. Minimalistic narrative that still has its moments. All glory to MGSV.

The true ending thing is hilarious, just shows who is a good journo and took his sweet time with the game and didn't rush through it like a headless chicken.
If it's a secret ending that you have to replay on harder difficulties to get, how would you have any frickin idea that you missed it unless you read elsewhere ahead of time.

I hate secret endings for this reason.

One thing I'm worried about.

I have Ground Zeroes from the US PSN store, but I'm buying the game in Australia.

Will the saves be compatible?

Well, yeah, but don't expect it to be anything like MGS3. Think of it as the perfect modern stealth-action game -- it's got the tone and style of old MGS, but it's a very evolved version. People who want that vintage MGS gameplay (and those vintage MGS long breaks between gameplay sequences) won't be super happy.

Sounds like traditionalists are gonna have to deal then.

MGS4 was over the top ridiculous. Glad they've grown up. Too bad this is the last Konami Kojima game.

Does it maintain that vintage MGS pacing? That feeling of a fateful, doomed mission full of revelation and surprises? Constant new mechanics and scenarios?

Have any reviewers commented on this game in comparison to GZ? People in this thread who've played it can comment as well. Does it just feel like GZ in a huge world with the Mother Base stuff added, or are there differences in tone and level design as well? Is GZ a good example of a basic mission in this game or are there enough improvements that GZ now feels more like a template than a demo?

That's actually a good question. I was going to say that MGS4 already lost that feeling thanks to the multiple locations... but actually I have to admit I do remembered the doomed feeling toward the end of that game.

No.

The pacing is very off. It's not really story focused like that.

Definitely seems like typical open world lack of urgency.

sounds great tbh. putting the best part of metal gear front and centre and taking the focus off the crummy story. it's made me excited about the game.

Well how did others find it?

MGSV a better sequel to Chaos Theory than any Splinter Cell game that came after it.

My impression on playing Ground Zeroes was that it played more like a Splinter Cell game than the older MGS games..... and that got me very hyped about Phantom Pain. Glad to see it's all worked out.

Replaying missions doesn't make a lot of sense.
Especially in a mgs game.

i love blacklist. i actually wanted mgs to be more like blacklist. so glad it exceeded my expectations.

MGS4 definitely did not capture this feeling as well as 1-3, but it was still kind of there. Think Heart of Darkness or Apocalypse Now especially. I didn't feel it whatsoever in PW.

Good reviews but I am super disappointed in what I'm hearing. Less story. Cassette tapes. Fucking secret ending that you have to replay missions to get? Come the fuck on. I wasn't too hyped for MGS V to begin with despite it being my favorite series. I got the sense from the gameplay and trailers I've seen that it was taking a different direction.

That's fine I guess but really disappointed. Went from a Day 1 because it's MGS to most likely a Gamefly rental for me. Really just sick of every other AAA game being open world.

:l

I'm currently replaying one of TTP story missions at the Subsistence (on-site procurement) setting. Five retries so far. I still keep coming back.

That's fine, I absolutely loved the gameplay in Ground Zeroes, so I'm not really worried about that part. I 'S' ranked every mission and got 100% completion for GZ, so I feel like I have a decent idea of what to expect from that perspective.

What I am more concerned about is the story stuff being so minimal, in addition to the repetitive nature of some of the missions. As I've gotten older I am less and less tolerant of open world shenanigans where I have to complete mundane tasks to further me along the main quest. I know you adored the Witcher 3, but I couldn't get past the first act for these reasons. As soon as some dude asked me to find his goat as part of the central story... I was out. I just don't have time for filler shit anymore when I work 50 hours a week. Give me the best, most interesting content you have from one moment to the next - I don't care if it's significantly shorter as a result.

Did you play Peacewalker? The template is similar.

Well, replaying a game on a higher difficulty isn't that much of an obscure task.

After learning that this actually might finally be the last Kojima MGS, I just wanted a nearly endless MGS sandbox to play in with a PC version so multiplayer can never completely die. There are a few loose ends I hope the barebones story ties up, but I feel like I got exactly what I wanted from the description in these reviews.

This is it, I really think this is it, guys! I can feel it! I really think this will be better than Snake Eater! Holy shit!

Time Magazine impressions

If I had to grade it now, 30 hours in, with 80% of the story yet to come, most of the equipment still locked away, my base still a nascent thing, and only a handful of the side missions complete, I’d give The Phantom Pain full marks, easy. But if you want to see whether another 30 or more hours changes my mind, I’ll be back with a full review before the game launches Sept. 1.

This is sounding better by the minute.

I haven't played a Metal Gear game before. Played Ground Zeroes and found it kinda boring. But I love action games, vast open worlds, and enjoy some good stealth. Would y'all recommend this? I'm having a very tough time deciding.

I definitely did once think that was the definition of MGS: "Infiltrating bases in extreme situations at the edge of the world before the enemies launch their superweapon"

I didn't mind a little jungle in between those bases, and an open world could pull it off.... But it seems that may have been lost with the latter game designs.

Peace Walker gives you new story missions for anyone that loads up after the credits. It's really not that hidden, one just has to keep playing.

What if that is the true ending and there is another hidden ending to find? dun dun dun

You never know with Kojima.

Damn. I'm so hyped for this after GT and KindaFunny reviews. Can't believe this is the 4th game in the same year doing that to me, after Bloodborne, Witcher 3 and Batman. What a year. Can't wait!

I'm gonna need friends on steam for this. Please add me. ID: viveks86

The story stuff is super disappointing and the reason I play these games.

I'm not surprised the Ubi/Far Cry/AC template is reviewing well either.
