It's only tangentially related, but nanomachines were also used to explain things about MGS's politics and psychologies. It's not just that it ruined the supernatural stuff, but the bigger themes about people/society/humanity's motivations for doing things was conveniently glued together with nanomachine mind control.

Please explain. Nanomachines on society and military groups didn't become a political and social issue up until MGS4's timeframe.

And please also explained all the supernatural things it ruined.

With a Ground Zeroes save and the Deja Vu mission from GZ completed, a Solid Snake outfit will be unlocked.

Do we know if this requires all of the scenes to be recreated? I've done the mission, but I missed one of the scenes. (The Moai) Just trying to decide if I need to go back and replay it.

Good god, I just read this page before realizing this is not the review thread.

Oh well, I don't really care about spoilers that much.

Eye candy is a type of fan service, yes.

Yeah, no. Fan service is the Rex fight in MGS4. Scantily clad women are not fanservice, and to say so is slightly sexist as it doesn't take into account the millions of female MGS fans.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_service would disagree with you , Fan service is lots of stuff, hell Dead or alive beach volleyball is fan service, so where do you think where kojima always has a odd scene with a female in underwear wouldnt be fanservice?

I think it was all scenes recreated + quiz on Normal for the MGS1 Suit, and all scenes + quiz on Hard for the MGS1 Grey Fox suit.

Right, but because of MGS4's retconning nature, a lot of that stuff wants to willfully replace the interpretation of things you or I may have formed about things throughout the series.

I seriously can't believe we are debating if this design is fan service or not.

Except MGS4 by itself doesn't retcon out the supernatural aspects of the series. You would have to blame fans for making up their own theories.

Ignorant. There are many female MGS fans that would love to see a chick in a bikini top!

You prejudice, close-minded person!

If Kojima is a big fan of the boobs, then his "swansong" or "magnum opus" is going to feature some A+ boobs.

Anyone hoping he'd suddenly tuck them away is not being realistic here.

Fucking Kojima.

Like, I am super excited for this game regardless, but the revelation of the Cobra Unit being nano-parasites is probably the most frustration-inducing thing I have heard this month.

Kojima, you don't have to explain everything with pseudo-science. Like, are you fucking telling me that parasites can make a man control bees with his mind, become a plant-person, communicate with the dead, become a freaky stealth man, or become a sentient ball of fire?

Has there been any confirmation or leaks or pics of places other than Afghanistan and Rhodesia through the reviews or any other place? The reason why we would be ashamed if we know why Quiet is dressed like that? The revolutionary gameplay that has never been done before if you possess both Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain and revisit Camp Omega?

Since Quiet is pretty much confirmed not to be Chico at this point, where's Chico?

Fan service, not fan service, who cares, that's just semantics. Cringey shit character design is still a cringey shit character design.
Damn right.

You could honestly compete in the fucking Olympics in Mental Gymnastics

EDIT: Nevermind. I looked back through your post history and have decided that snark isn't the right response. I've no interest in getting into an internet fight.

You must just be new to the concept of fan service, underclothed women/pantyshots/bouncyboobs have been considered fan-service before games even had jiggle physics.

I'd like to think I'm quite familiar with fan service, and don't consider Quiet's design to be that. Same with Booth Babes or the Playboys in the Mafia franchise. They could be considered a draw, but they're not in my opinion fan-service.

Isn't this thread supposed to be about spoilers, though?

I absolutely love that the Cobra's powers have now been explained. It fits in right with Vamp's nanomachines and Ocelot's hypnosis.

Ocelot fucking said: There's no such thing as miracles or the supernatural. Only cutting edge technology.

This game must bear the sins of the father. You don't get to have your cute little Snake Eater untouched by the rest of the series. It's like Meryl says, it plays by the same nanomachine rules, just like everyone else.

It's hilarious that Fortune of all characters might be the only one who could legitimately use magic lmao

It is confirmed there are tapes that talk about the PW cast, including Amanda. Chico is likely covered as well.

Semantics. The commonly accepted definition of fanservice with respect to nerd stuff is sexiness for mostly aesthetic appeal.

Nothing so far but that would imply more than 50 main missions. So i would say it's doutbful unless konami worked hard to keep the new locations under wraps. Retail copy are leaked so we should have somebody who has finished the game soon. I was also hoping for at least 1 buddy they never revealed but according to achievments, looks like we've seen all of them.

A writer for Game Informer has completed the game and is doing a Q&A. Not so much info so far, but worth refreshing now and then.

On Missions:
- Main missions can be replayed, though side-ops get locked once you complete them.
- The post-game is like Peace Walker, where you can can keep playing and doing side operations.

On open world structure affecting the story:
I was a bit disappointed in the story, but not because of the open-world structure. It was more because a lot of important information is pushed to optional audio logs. It reminds me of Final Fantasy XIII – unless you spend a lot time digging into that content for explanations, a lot of events don't make much sense.

On crazy and fun easter eggs:

On twists:
Yeah, there are some twists that I obviously won't ruin for anyone. There's definitely some bits of truth in several of theories I've seen.

On weather:
The weather system is a neat touch, but it usually didn't affect my strategy too much unless it was a sandstorm. Those make a ton of noise and reduce visibility, so you can basically just throw on your NVGs and run straight through an outpost.

On this being the best MGS:
Hey, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. For me, the hassle surrounding transportation (just getting around the map, or initiating missions) is kind of archaic compared to other open-world games, but the gameplay once you get there is pure gold.

On cassette tapes:
You have some tapes at the start, and you unlock more as you progress.

Some of the tapes are marked yellow, which is MGSV's way of separating "essential" and "optional" content. Basically, you definitely want to listen to all of the yellow-marked tapes to get all of the story and background. The other ones are still interesting, but less critical.

On showering (?):
Snake showered whenever he got too bloody. I wish there were a way to turn that off.

What about Vulcan Raven? Ocelot being possesed by Liquid on MGS2? I'd say most of the supernatural characters remain supernatural.

Ocelot in MGS2 would have to have inherited some trait from Sorrow. Some sort of leftover inherent predisposition to serve as a medium for the dead. And since presumably (I suppose this isn't 100% confirmed) the Sorrow got his powers from a parasite, it'd be safe to assume the same goes for Ocelot.

You are right about Raven. He knows some crazy Sioux shit.

Didn't one of the japanese voice actors die which was why they didnt continue that gimmick in mgs4?

Ocelot's japanese voice actor died. This is why Liquid Ocelot speaks on Liquid's voice during MGS4 in the japanese version.

In the english version we got the exact opposite: Liquid Ocelot speaks on Ocelot's voice all the time.

Well, look at it this way. If the Cobra powers are all obtained from a parasite, then it has to be some supernatural parasite. I mean, it may be a physical parasite, but it was created by a guy that looks like this.

Probably they are parasites that contain some sort of spiritual powers?

Wonder if they planned originally to use both VAs and would probably say nanomachines affecting voice boxes would be the reason for it.

For how vulcan raven has powers.... There is probably a cryptic metaphor somewhere explaining that shit.

Probably, but the only official confirmation we have is that Ocelot was truly possesed by Liquid's ghost in MGS2. He realized this, so he had Liquid's arm removed (Maybe he knew that the "real Liquid" would be too troublesome/unpredictable?)

^Well, Ocelot couldn't control his own actions when Liquid possessed him. Made the whole Liquid coming back in MGS2 thing pointless though by going the way they did in MGS4. He may as well have stayed dead and Ocelot just pretend to be possessed by him all along.

That was one of the dumbest theories I've ever heard anyway.

Why did it get any traction? It's beyond me.

"You will ashamed of your words and deeds" or something to that affect...lol.

Sure, functionally they are super powers. But going by these apparent spoilers, narratively it's gonna be some Resident Evil Biohazard mutation shit. They don't have to explain beyond that, just "I messed with these chemicals and produced this compound" type jargon.

They could be superpowers. He is also a native american like Raven so he might know black magiks.

Basically "because Kojima said words and deeds and also said things like farewell sausage on twitter, literally everything kojima does or says is a reference." I sometimes wonder if the Japanese fans theorize this much.

In the english version we got the exact opposite: Liquid Ocelot speaks on Ocelot's voice all the time.

Moreover: In the Japanese version of MGS2, it's just Ocelot's voice all the time with no switching.

Reason: Kojima didn't actually plan out any of the arm switching hypnosis stuff ahead of time and we live in retcon hell.

Then the MGS4 Database added more info on the whole Liquid arm switcharoo that happened between MGS2 and MGS4, since MGS4 never actually stated that Ocelot changed to a mechanical arm until we see it during that cutscene which I remember really threw people off back in the day.
