Rumor (with a side of salt): Shovel Knight coming to Smash Wii U/3DS?

Right on! That's the correct mindset to have about Smash reveals. I couldn't care less about Ridley or K. Rool, but if one of them got in, I'd be really happy for their fans instead of bitching about why my character didn't get in first or how my character is more deserving.

That said, I've been extraordinarily lucky with Smash newcomers this time around. I got almost every single newcomer I really wanted including my dream character (Mega Man), and now there's a chance of one of my two ballot votes making it in as DLC!

The lack of the Chorus Kids or any other Rhythm Heaven rep will forever burn, though. :(

Hmm, Derrick? I'm not sure he cares about Shovel Knight being in one way or the other. On the other hand, given how unbelievably hyped I am about anything and everything related to Shovel Knight... I'm going to be freaking out in the discussion we'll have if he's announced. ;)

Oh, that's more just him not liking Smash rumor speculation in general. I think he/we have been burned by so many convincing fakes at this point that he's just gotten tired of them. I love this constant rumor mill hype, though. :P
Oh, definitely! He's always been on the cautious side for rumors, and I think the Layton thing sent him over the edge on this one. It's gonna be entertaining no matter what haha. Shovel Knight might make the wait to Smash 5 and Chorus Kids easier.

Amiibo isn't for Smash

RIP Shovel Knight for Smash

Well, I'm actually surprised it turned out to be anything amiibo related. I was honestly expecting neither to be confirmed

Cool.

Still room for the Smash half of the rumor to pan out in the coming months, but we'll see. amiibo looks rockin' though.

This would explain the "retailers" confirming the amiibo. He made a huge assumption thinking it was for Smash. Guess thats a wrap for this rumor for now!

On to the next one!

Reposting myself from the community thread:

Here's what Tamaki says:

-One of his sources, working in retail, leads him on a new DLC character for Smash 4, being Shovel Knight.
-He corroborates this rumour with other people in the industry, who tell him specifically the character is already in development and who will be shown in the next month or two, meaning September or October.
-Only then he starts talking about the amiibo rumour from a few days ago. The rumour mentioned that the amiibo was coming out in November, so it is not the same thing that his sources told him.
-Finally, he starts talking about PAX events with Nintendo setting up Smash kiosks and speculates that it may have something to do with Shovel Knight as a Smash character.

The question then becomes, why would someone at retail be privy to Smash DLC information? Regardless, my point is that the stuff he actually claims is unrelated to the Shovel Knight amiibo rumour.

Are we sure that image isn't a mock up? Man, even if he's not in Smash, getting the first ever (non Smash) third party amiibo is an honor in itself. At he very least maybe stiff like Mii costume for MK8 and Yarn Shovel Knight hopefully...well...it doesn't matter because just the figure it good enough. Tho I'm surprised they didn't just do a indie three pack. Plus whats this about future games? We still have two more years of Shovel Knight at this dev speed.:P

But....I will not lose hope! theres still a chance for him to be in Smash! It could be a mockup, waiting for its real Smash logo! Lalala I can't hear you!! >:( i know what the odds are against me before and yet my wish came true so I will not lose hope!

Unless his Smash Amiibo is coming later.

That would solve the "Why is SK getting an Amiibo before Ryu's and Roy's are even officially revealed"

But I still think it was Unseen64 taking the Amiibo listing and assuming it meant Smash, rather than a generic SK Amiibo.

Just because it isn't a Smash box art Amiibo doesn't mean it's not for Smash. Maybe it's coming before its compatible with Smash. You never know.

I want Shovel Knight in the game, but at this moment, I don't see a reason to believe he will be.

Feel free to quote this as a crow-eating post if and when it happens. For right now, I'm not seeing it.

He looks like and obvious candidate, as does Maxwell from Scribblenauts( and Geno :,( )

But this may be more that they are releasing amiibos for other franchises, as the Yarn/8bit ones, which is both good and bad at the same time.

It won indie game of the year and is available on eight platforms. Shovel Knight is hardly obscure.
Snake, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, and Ryu are gaming icons with immense mainstream appeal and decades of history. Shovel Knight appeared in a digital-only game last year that sold 700,000 copies. He's just a blip on the gaming radar.

And yet he is getting an Amiibo. An indie dev is getting an Amiibo.

Giving indies amiibos is smart. It incentivizes them to put their games on the Wii U, which has a small install base, an even smaller number of game-buying consumers, a smaller fraction of which will buy digitally, a smaller fraction of which will buy indie, etc.

They should honestly be approaching every big kickstarter and successful indie publisher and offering to make amiibos. Not just Shovel Knight, but Yooka-Laylee, Bloodstained, Mighty No. 9, Steamworld Dig, etc., in exchange for timed exclusivity.
