Apparently Zero did it after GZ while Medic and BB were both in a coma to protect the real BB after they woke up. BB finds out about it and goes along with it, is in hiding from then until eventually Zanzibar. Outer Heaven BB is Medic (Venom Snake).

Huh. That's weird. Still some things I'm confused on, but those are some neat ideas. They just seem to be inplemented in a confusing way. Well guess I'll just wait until I can learn more

Why are Europeans getting this game so damn early...

Also, I guess the guys at giantbomb.com said they're going to be doing a full game playthrough (continuing Metal Gear Scanlon) at the launch of MGSV. Interesting.

GENERAL

  • Avatar creation is for the online elements only.
  • The are 50 main missions.
  • There are 157 side missions.
  • The alternate name of the ST-84 Metal Gear is confirmed to be the Sahelathropus.
  • The ST-84's cockpit is so small that only a child can pilot it.
  • The ST-84 Metal Gear has 6 body parts. Every part has its own life bar and destroying each part gives different advantages.
  • My source has confirmed that Big Boss' motorbike is not rideable/driveable during the game.
  • My source has also confirmed that so far on their playthrough, neither David Hayter nor Solid Snake have appeared in the game.
  • There is a mission where you have to recover the AI mammal pod from Peace Walker.
  • Zero orders Dr. Strangelove, who now works for DARPA, to develop The Patriots' AI to keep his control over the world.
  • In the penultimate mission of the main story, you must make contact with and recover Code Talker. Code Talker is being guarded by The Skulls.
  • The final mission of the main story is against the Metal Gear, which is being controlled by "The Third Child".
  • The guide says it's safe to assume that Eli is Liquid Snake.
  • Eli's codename is White Mamba.
  • The map confirms there are three main locations; Afghanistan, Africa and Mother Base.
  • Most S Rank times for missions are around 10-15 minutes.
  • A Cyborg Ninja outfit can be unlocked.
  • There are 19 soldiers that will join Motherbase voluntarily if you have a Ground Zeroes save. The Eye and The Finger are two of these recruits and the other 17 join you you by Mission 12.
  • With a Ground Zeroes save and the Deja Vu mission from GZ completed, a Solid Snake outfit will be unlocked.
PUNISHED “VENOM” SNAKE/BIG BOSS

  • My source has confirmed that we play as the Medic from Ground Zeroes who is unwittingly serving as a double for Big Boss. He is referred to as Punished “Venom” Snake and Ahab thoughout the game and then “The Phantom” by the end.
  • In Metal Gear (the 1987 MSX game), Big Boss orders Solid Snake to Outer Heaven, but this is actually so Solid Snake can kill Punished “Venom” Snake/Ahab/The Phantom, who is still acting under the guise of Big Boss. This is revealed during the traditional scrolling timeline that features at the end of the Metal Gear Solid games, which my source has also proved an image of:
PKk8X1X.jpg

xDBuIKH.jpg

  • Punished “Venom” Snake/Ahab/The Phantom finds out the truth by listening to the tape labelled “From the Man Who Sold the World” that was shown in The Phantom Pain’s E3 2015 trailer.
  • The Medic was just an ordinary solider from Militaires Sans Frontières who got facial surgery to look like Big Boss. He is not Grey Fox, Decoy Octopus, Solidus Snake or any other previously established character.
  • The guide also strongly suggests through clues that the Medic from Ground Zeroes is the version of Big Boss who awakens from the coma in the hospital.
  • The guide notes that Big Boss and the Medic have similar voices, so he is a strong candidate for being the version of Big Boss/Ahab that awakens from the coma in hospital.
  • The guide continues by saying that in Ground Zeroes, the Medic is one of Big Boss' "most trusted men".
  • The guide also says that the Big Boss we see on the operating table in the "Don't you die on me dammit!" scene from the trailers does not have shrapnel in his head. The guide suggests that the Medic is the person to most likely have the shrapnel in his head, while also being the same hospital room, as he protected Big Boss from the Paz's bomb blast in the chopper in Ground Zeroes.
  • Huey is not sure of Big Boss/Ahab's identity when he first meets him.
  • The guide says that the version of Big Boss/Ahab that awakens from the coma in hospital has a DNA test done with Eli. Their DNA does not match. The guide goes on to state that since Eli is a clone of the real Big Boss, their DNA should match. The guides says this again gives a glue to Ahab's identity.
  • The guide notes that when Eli asks Ocelot where his father is, Ocelot replies that "Your father isn't here". This is despite the fact that Ahab is watching their conversation behind a two-way mirror.
ISHMAEL

  • My source has confirmed that the real Big Boss is Ishmael. He goes into hiding after the attack on Motherbase in Ground Zeroes, while Punished “Venom” Snake/The Medic/Ahab/The Phantom helps Big Boss spread his legend.
  • Big Boss is wearing a glass eye, this is why his right eye is intact.
  • It was Zero's idea to keep Big Boss and the Medic hidden, this is why they’re on a British Air Force in Cyprus. It was also his idea to create a body double for Big Boss, as a lot people want him dead.
  • The player realises this through a tape near the end of the game, where it is revealed that Zero wants to bury his grudge with Big Boss and help him while he still can. This is because Zero has been infected with a parasite by Skullface which is slowly making him go into a vegetive state.
H3kjKVe.jpg

  • Kaz and Ocelot are in on the ruse and are intentionally misleading Punished “Venom” Snake/The Medic/Ahab/The Phantom.
  • The real Big Boss, Kaz, Ocelot and Zero have also created another Big Boss because, as much at the world wants him dead, the world also still needs a legend such as Big Boss.
  • Big Boss continues to appear as Ishmael even after the hospital sequence. His face is still covered though in order to protect his identity.
  • The guide on the other hand, doesn't definitely say who Ishmeal is. Konami and Kojima Production asked Piggyback, the creators of the guide, not to reveal it. Ishmael's identity is revealed in an optional mission after the main story has ended.
  • The guide does however, go over some fan theories and gives clues towards the true identity of Ishmael.
  • The guide discusses the theory that Ishmael is imaginary. It says that this can't be the case as Quiet sees Ishmael when she comes to assassinate the version of Big Boss/Ahab that awakens from the coma in the hospital.
  • The guides further states that as Big Boss/Ahab is sat in the left-hand seat of the right-hand driven ambulance that's used to escape the hospital, Ishamel must be real.
  • However, Ishmael suddenly disappears when the ambulance crashes. Ocelot rescues Big Boss/Ahab from the ambulance after the crash. Big Boss/Ahab asks Ocelet who Ishmael was, but Ocelot deliberately ignores the question.
  • The guide says that the fact that there are "The Star of Bethlehem" lilies in the Ishmael's and Big Boss/Ahab's room is a strong clue to the real identity of Ishmael. The guide also states that these lilies hold a significance to The Boss.
  • When Ahab sees the ghost of Paz the first time at Mother Base, he has an hallucination where there are clearly two versions of Big Boss on the chopper.
THE FIRST ENDING

  • The guide states that at the end of The Phantom Pain, the parasite that mutates peoples' vocal chords infects Mother Base. This forces Punished “Venom” Snake/Ahab/The Phantom, while still acting as body double as Big Boss, to exterminate his soldiers to prevent a global catastrophe.
  • The guide continues by saying that although Punished “Venom” Snake/Ahab/The Phantom takes on this responsibility without any apparent remorse, it's impossible from him to ignore the fact that he has contributed to these events. This causes him to unleash his "inner demon".
  • The guide states Punished “Venom” Snake/Ahab/The Phantom becomes the antagonist gradually, slowly consumed by what happens to him until all that is left is his obsession.
  • After these events, Punished “Venom” Snake/Ahab/The Phantom is more determined than ever to reinforce his troops, with the aim of forming a nation free from the governments' hegemony, a dream he will be on the verge of realising in the 1990's.
  • This leads to Punished “Venom” Snake/Ahab/The Phantom, while still under the guise of Big Boss, to create Outer Heaven.
MISSION 46

bhqltGm.jpg

  • My source has played Mission 46 and confirmed that by time you get around Mission 40, the “repeat” story missions at harder difficulties are unlocked, a few at a time. When you finish enough of these unlocked missions, Mission 46 becomes available.
  • Mission 46 is a replay of the hospital Prologue, but it reveals what actually happened to Ishmael/Big Boss. This is the mission that the source's supplied picture is taken from.
  • Mission 46 reveals that the real Big Boss has no horn and no scars, the same as the leaked “Truth: The Man Who Sold the World Xbox achievement picture: http://www.xboxachievements.com/gam...m-pain-xbox-one/achievement/104228-Truth.html
  • Mission 46 is missing from from the guide, as Konami asked Piggy Back to not to reveal how to unlock the mission or detail it's content. However, Piggy Back state that they will gradually supply information and updates online as they become available. The website will be www.piggyback.com/it/mgsv or the player can use a Quick Response code.
SKULLFACE

  • The guide states that Skullface is the main antagonist of Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain and that he was born in Hungary, where his parents worked in a secret weapons factory.
  • During the bombing of the weapons factory he was knocked down and trampled on by terrified crowds fleeing in search of safety. This caused Skullface very serious injuries.
  • Abandoned in critical condition and without any possibility of cure with conventional means, he survived thanks to a innovative therapy with parasites. However, this therapy also it caused his deformation and damage to his nervous system, meaning he can no longer feel pain.
  • He was then recruited in secret by Major Zero and his mandate with the XOF unit was to watch over Big Boss and make sure that his important missions didn't fail. This includes Operation Snake Eater from Metal Gear Solid 3.
  • Working for Zero and watching over Big Boss for many years led to him resenting the two of them, particularly Zero.
  • Skullface attacks Mother Base in 1975 during the events of Ground Zeroes and tries to kill Big Boss by implanting bombs inside Paz
  • When Skullface discovers that Zero and Strangelove are making The Partriot AI, he develops a parasite that infects peoples' voice boxes and stops them from speaking. This parasite is developed by Code Talker, who has the cure, but does want to share it.
  • The Cobra Unit from MGS3 were the begininning of Code Talker's experimentations with these parasites.
  • Because of the information supplied by Paz at the end of Ground Zeroes, Skullface finds Zero and infects him with the parasite. This causes Zero to slowly go into a vegetive state.
  • Skullface plans to spread the parasite using the ST-84 Metal Gear.
  • Skullface nearly completes his plan, but his overthrown by "The Third Child" after Mantis becomes enraged by Eli's presence in the XOF helicopter.
  • Skullface is crushed by the ST-84 Metal Gear and Miller and Big Boss decide to leave him to die, so he can suffer.
  • However, Huey ignores this idea and finally kills Skullface.
QUIET

  • Quiet's hearing is ten times more sensitive than normal soldiers.
  • Her vision is unaffected by time of day, so there is no difference in her sight between night and day.
  • Quiet is sent by Skullface to the hospital at the start of the game to kill Punished "Venom" Snake. At this point, she is a member of his XOF unit.
  • Quiet leaves you after mission 43 and to finish her story you will have to find her after the main story is over.
  • Quiet goes to the hospital to kill Big Boss at the start of the game and speaks while doing so. She specifically says "Not yet. The patient in the next bed saw my face" in regards to if she has assassinated Big Boss/Ahab.
  • Quiet is the carrier of the vocal cord parasites.
  • She was badly injured during the hospital attack in the Prologue, but her abilities were enhanced by these parasites. [/B]
  • Quiet doesn't talk out of respect for Big Boss.
  • After she leaves Diamond Dogs, Big Boss goes to find her in an optional mission. He succeeds but he's then bitten by a poisonous snake while escaping. Quiet must speak during this mission in order to save Big Boss.
  • At the end of this mission, Quiet disappears alone into the desert.
  • Salt water has a negative affect of Quiet's powers and can kill her.
  • If you spray Quiet with water she will "wriggle", because the parasites inside her are absorbing the water. She also reacts to rain.
  • The guide states that Big Boss' relation with Quiet is based on mutual respect and has no traditional romantic connotation. It goes on to say that this doesn't diminish the importance of their relationship or Quiet's sacrifice when saving Big Boss.
  • Quiet has an optional Sniper Wolf outfit that can be unlocked.
HUEY AND DR. STRANELOVE

  • Dr. Strangelove is Octacon's mother.
  • Strangelove and Huey have a huge falling out after Huey's suggests using a young Octagon as a test subject for piloting the Sahelanthropous/ST-84 Metal Gear.
  • Dr. Strangelove dies after she accidentally gets stuck inside the mammal pod and Huey lets her suffocate inside.
  • Huey also somehow causes a parasite outbreak, at Motherbase (in addition to Quiet’s) and is banished afterward.
  • Huey goes on to live after being banished from Motherbase and meets Emma's mother.
THE SKULLS

  • The are three versions of The Skulls; A fog Version, an armoured version and a camouflage version.
  • All versions of The Skulls have health that slowly regenerates over time.
  • Like Quiet, they also have a negative reaction to water and rain.
  • You can fulton every type of Skull, leading to different rewards.
  • After being fultoned, The Skulls are kept on the quarantine strut of Motherbase.
  • Like Quiet, they have perfect vision during night time and you can them breathing if you listen aiming with one of thier sniper rifles.
  • Destroying the "fog version" Skulls' body parts rapidly reduce their health and resistance.
  • Fultoning the "armoured version" Skulls will reward with the player with parasite enhanced armour.
  • Fultoning the "camouflage version" Skulls leads to the creation of an item that grants the player 30 seconds on invisibility.
  • The "camouflage version"'s body parts can't be destroyed, so headshots are the most useful way to defeat these Skulls.
THE "MAN ON FIRE"/VOLGIN

  • The "Man on Fire" is Volgin and he's being possessed by "The Third Child". You have to recover his body in Chapter 2.
  • Volgin is actually still alive at the end of MGS3, although he's in a coma and is clinically braindead.
  • His thirst for revenge against the real Big Boss is what kept him alive and this has literally turned him into a demon.
  • Russian doctors recover Volgin's body after the events of MGS3 and keep him alive for scientific preservation.
  • After Volgin's body is recovered in Chapter 2, his body is kept on the quarantine strut of Motherbase.
  • However, his body is eventually crushed by the ST-84 Metal Gear's loading platform.

MUSIC TAPES

The map from the guide also confirms that these are some of the music tapes that are collectable from different locations.

These are in addition to some of the other music tapes that have already been confirmed:

It's probably because he's disappointed about how it's turned out vs what he had expected the end result to be. Nothing wrong with that, you see it all the time in spoiler threads. You have to come into these things expecting a good volume of salt to be thrown around. Anytime something someone has waited a long time for doesn't match what they had hoped for, there's going to be some bitterness.

I had no expectations and haven't actually followed this game much at all. I gave up on the story after MGS4, I'm just surprised to see it sink deeper and nothing I've said is wrong. It's just my opinion based on my general tastes in fiction. People also said that MGS4's story was great and handled well, but I found it to be pure and utter trash lacking any sort of depth and substance, and that was when I was actually a die-hard fan of the series having adored MGS1-3 and even Portable Ops. It's just sad to see something that once had excellent storytelling reduced to lowest-common-denominator type nonsense where consistency and logic (at least the logic the series was known for) are nowhere to be seen.

Hey guys,

A fellow journalist under the name of Free7hinker (it's also his Twitter handle) asked me to share his thoughts on the game and its ending with all of you. He wanted to post this himself, but he can't get clearance on his account here for some reason.

It's quite lengthy, but very interesting and I agree with most of it.

If you're a Metal Gear Solid fan, you may appreciate the following perspective -
Regarding Venom Snake being The Medic, who is manipulated to believe he's Big Boss, but who also represents the player:
How loyal are you to Big Boss?
Would you have sacrificed your life to save his?
The Medic was to Big Boss what Big Boss was to The Boss.
In retrospect, what was the most heroic deed Big Boss did in his life?
I would argue he falls short of being a true hero in comparison to the Medic, who put his life on the line to save the life of a 'Legend'.
Without the Medic's heroics, Outer Heaven would have been nothing but a dream. The Medic also helped prevent WW3.

It also makes sense that Big Boss was introduced as 'Snake' in GZ instead of 'Big Boss'. He lost that title because it didn't mean as much to him anymore. He passed it over to the Medic - the one who truly deserved it for his heroics and saving Jack's life - Twice.

In that regard, the Medic (who portrays 'us') is the true hero. This is what Kojima has always wanted us to believe and feel role-playing 'Snake'.
Revolver Ocelot: "Given the right situation, the right story, anyone can be shaped into Snake." (MGS2)
Keifer once said:
"There's a secret you have to finish the game to know."
He may have been alluding to the Ishmael secret, or who Venom Snake/Big Boss truly was.
Ask yourself: Why would Mantis fight Big Boss at the end if Mantis was a 'Son of Big Boss'? Could it be that Mantis read through Venom Snake and knew he wasn't who he, and we, thought he was? Did Mantis figure out it was someone impersonating him?
They can program someone to be like someone else, like they did with the Mammal Pod. Putting that on a human would be the natural evolution of this technology - program someone to be another one.
Everything on your mind says you're someone because it's all there. You got all the information, the programming, etc. But then...you're not. You become, actually, nobody. Your 'face is irrelevant'.
And, maybe, we - as the player - are supposed to feel that way. We're sure we are someone (Big Boss), but then we're not and we will never know the truth. Know why? Because everything is 'in our minds' (meaning 'everything we have played') indicates we are Big Boss.
Maybe, if the truth were too straightforward, it would ruin it. To a person programmed like that, it could never be straight forward. Like Inception, you can never know if you're dreaming, no matter what.
Maybe that's why Peace Walker (the game) was created; With TPP in mind. The technology from the Mammal Pod to be implemented on a real person that cannot be hacked like the Mammal Pod was.
Such as all those saying, "Are you kidding? We have to be Big Boss. It's the last game. It would make no sense to be someone else."
Exactly. Denial.
"Are you kidding me? I am Big Boss. I remember everything. It's all in my mind. I can't be someone else. Or can I?"
Because, if we stop to think and reflect...That's what Metal Gear has always been about: copying a person. Always trying to copy Big Boss. That's why LET was created. That's why the Genome Project was created. That's why Raiden was created. That's why Null was created. And, maybe, they've finally done it.
The 'Perfect Soldier'...
But not without collateral damage.
Kojima gave us a hint in MGS1.
Have you ever heard about the "The Selfish Gene" theory? It was created by Richard Dawkins. It's a book, actually.
I was mind-blown, then, when I saw Liquid mentioning the book. Before we fight him, Liquid asks Solid: "Ever heard of the 'Selfish Gene' theory?". It's amazing because, even though it is an important theory to the Scientific community, it is not that mainstream. Kojima must have had a lot on his mind.
That theory says that the human mind is "programmed" to survive, but not in the way we're used to understand the meaning of 'survive'. To this theory, that "survival" means keeping your copies alive - meaning your children. Thus, this is why we have the impulse to procreate and protect our children: we're not being 'selfless', but rather 'selfish'. This 'selfish' gene only cares about copying itself and, then, survive.
And that's what Metal Gear is about: copying someone - as we know, Big Boss. Copying the 'Perfect Soldier'. What if they have achieved the epitome of "programming" theorized by "The Selfish Gene", copying perfectly not only the genes, but "memes" and "scenes"? How could we know and differentiate if it's all so real, perfect and well programmed - if it is a perfect copy?
This is what has transpired throughout the course of the Metal Gear Solid lore and why The Phantom Pain has finally solved the saga's biggest mystery.
'The Phantom Pain' - Your brain tells you that something is there, but it is not.
To be told "You are not who you think you are." has to be one of the most gut-wrenching psychological experiences we can endure as humans.
The power of language:
"...Words to control the subconscious."
Regarding language itself:
Solid Snake: "Listen, don't obsess over words so much. Find the meaning behind the words. Then decide." (MGS2)
Kojima's message to the player:
"You don't need a Legend's DNA to be considered a 'Legend' yourself. Anyone can be 'Big Boss'. You only need heart."

it also alludes to the idea that anyone can literally be 'Big Boss', or a 'Legend'. It is just a title. You don't need to be Jack to be 'Big Boss'. You can be you, or, in this case, the Medic.
What constitutes a 'hero'? a 'legend'? Wasn't Jack a nobody before he became 'Snake'? Before he was awarded the title 'Big Boss'? The same can be said about Solid Snake, too. Legends can coexist, such as Jack and the Medic.

"From FOX, Two Snakes Were Born."

Ultimately, We were the true hero. The real 'Big Boss'. The 5th Snake.

And there you have it. This is The Phantom Pain. 'YOU' have come to.

Brilliant, Kojima. Absolutely brilliant.

And this:

This turned out to be exactly like my theory regarding the connection between '36 Hours' (1965) and the hospital scene in MGSV: TPP. Kojima must have been inspired by that movie.
'36 Hours' was based on the book 'Beware of the Dog' by Roald Dahl.

This was a short story that was part of a book of short stories called 'Over to You':

In 1950, Maj. Jefferson Pike (James Garner), an Army intelligence agent who served with distinction in World War II, awakens in a hospital with severe amnesia. He isn't sure where he is, how he got there, or even who the woman at his side is, even though the doctor tells him that her name is Anna (Eva Marie Saint) and that she is his wife. The doctor instructs Pike to recall, in as much detail as possible, what he was doing before the accident that caused his traumatic memory loss. But the doctor isn't a doctor, Anna isn't Pike's wife, it isn't 1950, and he isn't in an American hospital. World War II is still very much in progress, and Pike is being duped in an elaborate scheme prepared by Maj. Walter Gerber (Rod Taylor), a German intelligence agent. Gerber is trying to trick a drugged and suggestible Pike into telling him everything he knows, as the injured soldier lies in a Bavarian military hospital after being taken prisoner. Will Pike be able to see through the cracks in Gerber's facade before he spills the beans that could mean death and defeat for American soldiers?
More details from '36 Hours':
When Pike wakes up, he is in what seems to be a U.S. Army Hospital. His hair is graying, and he needs glasses to read. He is told it is six years later and the hospital is in post-war Occupied Germany, even though he has no memory of the intervening period.
The same happens in MGS V, but it's 9 years later.
An Army psychiatrist who seems American, Major Walter Gerber (Rod Taylor) explains that he has been having episodes of memory loss for the past few years, ever since he sustained physical trauma in Portugal in June 1944. He advises Pike not to worry, as his blocked memories have always resurfaced within a few weeks, helped along by a treatment that mostly consists of remembering events prior to Lisbon and then pushing on into the blank period. Gerber is assisted by a nurse, the dispassionate Anna Hedler (Eva Marie Saint).
To support the illusion that he has been a hospital patient for some time, Pike is provided with letters supposedly written by his father, and photos of German doubles who resemble his parents—Gerber has been researching Pike for many months to prepare for this event—and Hedler tells Pike she is his wife. He is also shown fake newspapers dated 1950, and listens to a faked American forces radio broadcast. The grounds are full of (captured) U.S. Army jeeps and seemingly American staff and patients, some happily playing baseball.
Ground Zeroes was used as a simulation to brainwash/manipulate the Medic into believing he is Big Boss. The tapes? The vehicles? The doctor? The nurse? It's all too familiar.
This movie has 'Kojima' written all over it and it's a theory that speaks volumes to its connection with what has transpired in MGS V: TPP.

Excuse the wall of text. But if you're interested in going beyond the whole "meh I don't like the ending" give it a read.

The Medic was to Big Boss what Big Boss was to The Boss.

This should've been shown then. There isn't a single hint of it besides an off-hand comment that doesn't make sense.

In that regard, the Medic (who portrays 'us') is the true hero. This is what Kojima has always wanted us to believe and feel role-playing 'Snake'.
Revolver Ocelot: "Given the right situation, the right story, anyone can be shaped into Snake." (MGS2)

Except that entire plot point was a lie and was merely a tiny component of the S3 Plan-- a proof of concept, not a plan itself. Not to mention no allusion or comparison is made in TPP.

"You don't need a Legend's DNA to be considered a 'Legend' yourself. Anyone can be 'Big Boss'. You only need heart."

The logic behind this is so twisted and out of touch, even with Kojima's own stories.

The only problem I have with the above analysis on first glance is that if we're trying to relate the Selfish Gene theory, BB pretty much does the opposite and lets Venom Snake take all the (mortal) risks for him.

MGSV Synopsis: An unhappy middle-aged Legend agrees to a procedure that will fake his death and give him a completely new look and identity - one that comes with its own price.

I don't think they modeled him after someone and managed to perfectly imitate that person's skeleton in the movie.

I agree 100% with News Bot e Tookay. That theory is horrific, it took 20 hours of relationship building through cutscenes, codec conversations, gameplay and one of the greatest ending ever for the player to understand the relationship between Naked Snake and The Boss. It took some of the best boss fights ever to build the character from Naked Snake to Big Boss. And now you're telling me that? Please stop. I've loved this saga since the day my hands were big enough to take a controller.
Can't believe people can accept that Big Boss is no more. I mean, ok, opinions and everything but still.

People change, DevilFox. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. That's the entire point of Big Boss.

You can't please some people.

Quiet is sent by Skullface to the hospital at the start of the game to kill Punished "Venom" Snake. At this point, she is a member of his XOF unit.

If that's the case... why couldn't she get a special suit made for her after getting burned? Seriously if she worked for the organization that has soldiers with special suits, and even developed the parasites... they couldn't do anything to help her out there!? Yeah the whole argument of "No access to said suits" and "Not enough time to develop a suit" is BS... lol.

As far as I'm concerned, "Medic is Big Boss" is non-canon, and the character I play is the Big Boss of future installments.

Not going to deal with some stupid incoherent twist.

I just finished the prologue. As someone who hasn't played MGS3 or PW - nothing made sense at all. Is there any context what just happened trying to escape the hospital?

I have a question. If a buddy dies because I fuck up in a mission or in free-roam, do they permanently die or are they fultoned away and I just lose bond levels? I want to know if it will be safe to take DD with me.

Huh, Venom Snake said to Liquid when he brought him to Mother Base: "Welcome to Outer Heaven!" I didin't know Mother Base is Outer Heaven and that is locate din Seychelles Waters.

I just think it's crazy that pretty much none of the reviews mentioned that...

Some even said the plot was unsurprising, unconclusive...

Makes me question the integrity of many reviewers

If reviewers reveal this then a lot of people cancel their preorders. If this was hinted at even remotely from people that spent extensive time playing the game then we have other controversial moments in recent gaming history level of mad from gamers.

I can't wait for walkthroughs to hit.

What if the big twist is that Kojima DIDN'T make MGSV?

That way, art imitates life and we are really playing a game made by a new "Big Boss".

I understand the premise of the twist, it's another 4th wall break for the series, similar to MGS2 in some regards. But can certainly agree with those who are completely put off by it because of a random faceless medic who's randomly inserted into GZ.

It's funny looking back how people were trying to pass off the whole "Kiefer's voicing the medic" thing as just Kojima saving money by having him voice multiple characters, and that the game's insistence on not showing his face during the cutscene was just a coincidence.

Exactly.

I can see why people hate this, as they desperately want to play with "their big hero" (LOL, Sons of Liberty much?) but the point is that THEY THEMSELVES are the hero. (It's the entire point of Master Chief's design too, btw.) Because they chose to play the game. Because they have been given an assignment.

Big Boss isn't a legendary super soldier, he is an idea. A construct.

but Big Boss is shown to be a legendary soldier because of the events of Operation Snake Eater, Portable Ops, Peace and later Zanzibar land and whatever other unknown missions in between.

Is it meant to be obvious from the start of the game youre not playing as Big Boss? Like the guy helping you in the hospital is obviously voiced by Kiefer, and you get to make your character's original face before under-going facial surgery. Like, the twist is sort of presented to you on a platter there right? Are you meant to go the whole game knowing youre not playing as the real BB?

You're meant to know "something" is off about who you are but not the details, but Kojima was extremely heavy handed about it, so basically yeah you're meant to have a pretty good idea, I just don't know how people could be shocked, but it sounds like Venom and the player are suppose to go through the same mental process about the fact he is not big boss and that the player doesn't get to play as Big Boss.

Kojima pulled that whole stunt with the fake face thing, then in the first trailer had This song which to me made it very apparent something was very wrong with one or more of the characters we thought we knew.

There are so many other hints, like a Boss AI, (they just HAD to milk her MGS3 speech again), not recognizing Venom Snake, followed by Huey questioning if it's him in that exact same scene. If the other hints are anywhere near that obvious than yes it's served to you on a platter.

"Taboo Themes" from IGN: http://uk.ign.com/wikis/metal-gear-solid-5-the-phantom-pain/"Taboo_Themes"

"During a round table interview in February 2013, Hideo Kojima spoke about how Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes may be too taboo heavy and deal with such grim subject matter that he may not be able to get it published, and even if it does get published, it may not sell.

Hideo Kojima: "I'm going to be targeting a lot of taboos, a lot of mature themes that really are quite risky,"

"I'm not even sure if I'm going to be able to release the game, and even if I did release the game then maybe it wouldn't sell because it's too much. As a creator I want to take that risk."

So....what were the themes? I know it's a little more brutal in terms of violence. What were the themes that made Kojima unsure if he can sell the game?

Is the taboo literally just the twist?

Chico was forced to rape Paz at gunpoint. And we don't know much about Quiet just yet. She might have some similar situation.

Anyone have a pic of Quiet's other costume?

Generally the same stuff that we as adults should know about when it comes to war especially since the film industry has addressed these things way more gracefully. (Child soldiers, rape, bombs, etc.)

Taboos might be rape, child soldiers, waterboarding etc. But maybe he's been held back internally and there was supposed to be more.

You know what bruh? I fucked up. Clearly says GZ in the article. I just remembered that quote so clearly because it sounded super risky.

I wonder if there's anything else risky along those lines in TPP. Other than the twist of course.

Ahhhh okay. I was confused because everyone is saying this game is light on story, and was expecting some super dark themes. Like in GZ.

You know, I didn't mind the Boss AI stuff in PW because it serves as a starting point for how Zero's Patriot system came about.

I did, because it was shown in MGS2 that Emma invented the AI.

But thanks to these prequels it turns out Emma and Otacon are chumps who didn't ivent much of anything compared to Huey and Strangelove. Not a fan of that.

Also I didn't like the continuing putting of the Boss on a pedestal, but I cant totally blame PW for that. That is mgs4's sin.

After the massive backlash and drop in sales following MGS2 he probably is talking about the twist. The "dark" "mature" stuff really aint crazy from what I've seen, people are more concerned with Quiet's outfit than any of that stuff.

I don't think anyone has pointed this out yet, but: the twist actually makes sense from a gameplay perspective and has been staring the player in the face from the get-go.

See, you don't even have to do the missions as Venom Snake; you can play most missions with every Mother Base soldier available. Just pick a different character on the loadout screen and voila, you're good to go.

(The reason you might want to do this? Because every soldier has different stats and might work out better in certain missions. For instance, a soldier with a high Medic stat will see medicinal plants from a greater distance, etc.)

But what does this imply? Exactly: that every soldier has the potential to be a Big Boss. You could theoretically beat the game as Random Bald Russian #235, code name Freaky Buffalo, because the avatar doesn't matter. Your actions as a player matter.

It's a perfect twist that ties into what we do as gamers so incredibly well.

This isn't unique to The Phantom Pain though, you can do the exact same in Peace Walker where it's merely a gameplay mechanic, and only a handful of missions (the tutorial, for one, and there's a second as well later in a jail scene), which are explicitly labelled with "SNAKE ONLY", cannot be played as anybody but Snake. If you're playing as another character, do events still play out as if Big Boss completed them, and not 'Random Bald Russian #235 code name Freaky Buffalo', or is it acknowledged, both in the cutscenes and gameplay, that it's anything more than a mechanic to support the gameplay element and provide an incentive to actually collect soldiers and play as anybody but Snake? Because if not, it implies nothing more to me than what Peace Walker did with the exact same thing, when it most certainly was not intended to imply 'anybody can be Big Boss'.

EDIT: Actually, I think you can do it in Portable Ops too, but I'm not one hundred percent certain as to the conditions for this as it's been awhile since I played it.
