I hope Kojima wasn't forced to sign some kind of NDA when he was kicked out of Konami. I'd love to hear if this was really the way he wanted things to go, if he regretted casting Keifer etc.

Keifer was great, he just didn't have much to say. The character was written quite differently than say MGS3's BB.

I'm not sure if the intention was as simple as "you're Big Boss". In MGS2, Raiden throws the dog tags away after Snake tells him he can chose his own path. Here, "the player" (as in Medic), is told he's now Big Boss. Big Boss on the other hand becomes "the player".

So I think it's different, but I'm not entirely sure what it means. Something like, V is now free to do as he wishes. But not Big Boss, since, well, his story is already written in a way, he has to play "his role" in the series now. Where Raiden threw away the dog tags, Big Boss here basically takes them from V.

I just took it as it didn't matter who you were playing as whether it was the medic or whatever. It's because of the player's love and admiration of the character that BB left his mark in history, kept his legend alive and all that. Then there is the other thing to take from it is that he is also at the same time talking to his Phantom since he is a character all onto himself now.

If Kojima didn't mean it that way as a message for the players then he could have removed the player's name from behind the picture as well as when Ocelot gives the passport to BB. It doesn't make any sense because he could have removed all that effort of doing so and just focused on BB talking about/to only VS in that scene. He had it in there for a reason and with that aspect included it seemed to me that BB isn't only talking about/to VS in that scene but the player as well.

VSEdit: We all know Kojima doesn't do something for the fuck of it, everything has to have a reason.

Well, going through this thread most people wanted to be playing as the real BB which means Kojima succeeded in what he wanted to do I guess hahaha. In 2 though I meant to say that Raiden was free from the player's control and is now free to do as well as believe in what he wants not the player.
It's more that most people wanted to see him become the villain. That doesn't necessitate you play as him.

That and wanting to play as real BB for one last time. I think that's the only disappointment for me in terms of the story that we don't get to see him become the villain but we only get the seeds planted. It's more like a "SEE WHY BB IS THE VILLAIN IN MG1" rather than MGSV.

Yes exactly. We could be playing as Chico, it wouldn't matter but this game was described as "the missing link" in the MGS story. I don't think it's done a really good job.

i don't know if i enjoyed the ending or hated it. the more i think about it, the cooler it sounds and i really enjoy and appreciate the not entirely subtle messages to the player from kojima, but it wasn't what i wanted out of mgsv. if that makes any sense.

i wanted big boss to go completely off the deep end and stopping at nothing for the sake of revenge. i wanted to see him basically become a warlord. in a way, he did. expanding mother base is just the propagation of war, and it's presented in such an inviting and warm way that when you think about it, the player's actions of even upgrading the base are straight twisted.

i dunno. i just wanted mgsv to swing in totally the opposite of peace walker (which i liked, but it was anime as fuck), and just give me this dark, monstrous recounting of big boss in the 80s. it definitely satisfied that itch more than a few times, but it never came to a head.

still, the best gameplay of the series by the country mile and i doubt any other game will top it in terms of stealth action for a long, long time. i was really quite saddened when it looked like 70% of the remaining missions were just revised versions of ones i'd already played. makes it sting even more that the feature where players can create their own missions was cut.

And Finished. Well that is going to be divisive. I can see what Kojima was going for but I'm not 100% sure it worked. It felt empty considering this is it. There is nothing to follow. I don't think an M. Night Shyamalan style twist was the best way to go with it considering everyone called said twist a year a go. MGS2 this ain't.

That said I did enjoy the Ocelot/Kaz interaction at the end. That tied everything together in a much better way than the actual ending.

The pacing of Chapter 2 was diabolically bad and you can literally see how unfinished the game is.

Overall a polarizing game for me. When its great it shines bright and the game play is just perfection. However, a boring open world, terrible pacing (both story-wise and in game play), open world design 101 mistakes and an unfinished ending drag it down. The worst thing I can say is that I'm glad its over. I can move on now.

One things for sure. The backlash is going to be heavy. It also makes sense why Konami withheld the ending from reviewers.

I just did this, so yes you can. Didn't even finish all replay missions, just the main story ones and a lot of side-ops. Also had anything on MB at a minimum level of 4.

How did you prevent her from "leaving"? Not playing a certain mission, if so which one?

Use the butterfly emblem thingie.

Just realised Quiets final mission is a foreshadowing of Solid Snake killing Venom but it was all for nothing because the real Big Boss is still out there.

Venom goes through tanks and shit just for it all to come crashing down due to a snake, a snake that survived a lot of bullets. A Solid Snake.

So how does this work then?
I have stopped Quiet from leaving by using the emblem and I have mission 47 unlocked, once I reach the end I will get the ending but then can I play Quiet's missions for her ending when I am done with the rest of the game?

It's an absolute shitter that you lose her for good, makes no sense that you cannot use Quiet in the game once her story is over due to "story reasons" but can see Snake in ACC after a "To be continued" cutscene due to how "mission structure" in this game work.

It always seemed to me that it shouldn't have been that hard to explain why BB went bad, or was at least perceived to be the bad guy. With the Patriots basically in control of the U.S. shouldn't BB and Ocelot pretty much be the heroes of the entire series as they knew the truth and tried to oppose the Patriots.

I used the butterfly emblem to make sure I don't trigger her leaving until after I have S-ranked the missions where she will be useful (equipping her with Sinful Butterfly makes dealing with the parasite unit really easy).

I did do some of the extreme replays, but I liked doing the side-ops more, so I just started doing those and after a few the cutscene where Huey leaves triggered. After this I could select mission 46.

?

The emblem you get? Put it on as your own custom emblem and keep wearing it the whole frigging time? (and can you edit it or add stuff?)?

Damn those are some lame design choices. So you CAN do her "final" mission and keep her? Or use the emblem so she won't leave beforehand?

Need to replay the whole fking thing :(

That never made much sense either, even before MGSV.

"Lets oppose an organization that wants to perpetuate war by becoming mercenary warlords."

They are definitely not heroes. They occupy a gray area similar to Solidus.

Big Boss's true intentions and ideals are vague since MG2 is in a state of canon limbo.

Ocelot is definitely no hero, he wanted to destroy everything in MGS4 and turn the world into a new "Wild West". Where as the Patriots side wanted total control, BB's side fought for complete anarchy, they both suck, only Solid Snake knew to just let things be.

With the war economy of the patriots they kind of ended up very similar in the end, perpetual war.

Never looked at it that way, fantastic.

Anyone know where to get Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" ? Or are tapes random?

It's in Di Wiallo Kalai.

Sounds familiar. Try the houses and tents near where you first meet Huey in Afghanistan, behind those huge compounds. There is a 100% for sure a music tape there.

Afghanistan Central Base Camp is the name I believe. It is far North in the map.

not sure if intended but I do rike it.

but yeah in he OT spoilers are getting pretty bad regarding quiet

lol playing the Afghan lullaby on loud speakers makes the soldiers in Afghan asleep, my guess there is one for Africa as well. I also found tapes of animals in the MB zoo, animal sounds.

MPO was also described as such.

On another note, MGS4 was also cut. The first and second chapters are the only ones close to the original design, after that it's all rushed, and the last chapter is one long hallway. It was supposed to be a lot more like MGSV. Heck even MGS3 was supposed to play like it to some extent, but it didn't look like it was really abridged compared to 4, which had the whole "influence the battlefield" thing but there were only battlefields in the first two chapters.

It always seemed to me that it shouldn't have been that hard to explain why BB went bad, or was at least perceived to be the bad guy. Not really, since all BB rants about in the MSX games is how the world needs to be at constant war, train kids to become soldiers and send them on the battlefield, etc.

But even MGS1 made it sound like BB was a tortured soul, when Snake says BB wanted Snake to kill him. Considering the BB was saw in MGS3, it wasn't clear how BB would eventually go outright evil. But now we know it apparently never quite happened, only his phantom did. Depends on how MG2 is retconed really.

To me the logic was always that BB would eventually end up becoming what the Patriots wanted him to become, that they knew people were always going to start wars, so you might as well let war happens but by your own pawns. BB realizes this after his downfall, wants SS to kill him, and hopes that maybe Snake won't be stuck in this loop. That's not how it turned out.

Haven't played MG1 or 2. How big of a bad guy was he in those? Maybe Kojima is going for the misunderstood antagonist rather than moustache twirling evil?

Yeah but during MGS4, is that really Ocelot's true intention or wasn't it that the stupid Liquid Snake hypnosis he did to trick the Patriots and it was what Liquid wanted? I need to replay the games.

Awesome detail. Was wondering why it was a different category of tape than the rest.

Ocelot tricked himself so its his responsibility regardless lol

He wanted to destroy the Patriots and succeeded but Sunny prevented collateral damage from occurring (the Patriots were key to the infrastructure of society so Ocelot's plan would have sent humanity to a dark age)

It's more than just a yes or a no. I enjoyed/loved aspects of it.
this.

arguably in parts it's the most grounded mgs, and in others totally nuts to the point of a widely mocked fan theory being the truth. not that either are good or bad, just inconsistent. but that's the series as a whole when you think about it.

honestly, if people still took mgs' story seriously after 4, well...

i'd play this any day of the week over 4.

We've had three white blond-haired child soldiers fighting in Africa now.

Gray Fox, Eli, Jack/Raiden.

Geez. I bet they'll all be together in the next game, maybe fighting under Solidus? :p

didn't konami say the next game is going to be a reboot?

honestly that's probably the best direction to go in, even if i have zero faith in the next mgs without a lot of the kojipro top brass producing.

A reboot or a remake? If it's a reboot, I'm intrigued.

Edit: I still think there might be a Gray Fox-related DLC. The motion capture session with the sword was too great of a hint. Heck, maybe we get to play N312 :)

What does everyone mean by butterfly emblem? I don't want quiet to go, I like her.

In your iDroid there should be an option called Customize.

Lets you change your helicopter, mother base, your avatar, and the emblem patch you have on your shoulder (by default it says DD)

You can unlock emblems that represent the MGS4 PMCs, use various animals (butterfly), and even create phrases (SONS OF LIBERTY).
