I mean I know it wasn't actually that way, it just sucks to play as this depressed lame-o who's sad about pretending to be big boss. That's what it is, right? When does he discover that he's not big boss? when, chronologically does the mirror scene takes place?

The current theory is that it takes place right before the end of MG1 and Venom's battle with Solid Snake where he gets killed.

I'm just to the point where I think it's for the best Kojima goes and does something else with his life.
ZOE 3 !

Somehow, despite his doctor showing him his actual face in a mirror and in a photograph before doing the surgery.

"Please don't remember this"
Ocelot's hypnotism playing tricks on his mind.
For a moment I thought the surgery didn't went as planned because it was scheduled after the attack, but even the prologue the Doctor checks on you and your operation scars.

Bangin' EVA and smoking cigars.

Or this. Or sex roleplay with EVA as The Boss.
Yuck.

lol but seriously, i feel kinda robbed. i know i was looking forward to see how the big boss of peace walker became the big boss we see later on, which i guess would be metal gear 2. and now we just spent a whole game traipsing around as venom snake who honestly is a pretty cool guy. and we're supposed to believe this guy becomes the bad guy of MG1? i would have liked to see how he really reacted longterm after he discovered he wasn't really big boss.

also, the ocelot of mgs5 feels so much...different than the ocelot we see later.

I actually haven't gotten to the end yet, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't know the whole game that he's fake.

In the mirror scene he's listening to a tape from the real big boss explaining everything, and you supposedly have that tape at the beginning of the game. He has to know at some point.

Kojima couldn't even give Big Boss a hint of gray hair.

They should have had someone else write this. Get a writer outside of Kojima Productions, even.

I remember when everyone (Including me) thought that we would be playing as an older Big Boss in Ground Zeroes (Because the lighting made it look like his hair was white).

How disappointing.

Am I crazy or does this show Big Boss with a Berret?

Funnily enough I saw strands of grey hair on Venom Snake's head in the ending when he listens to the tape, giving credence to the theory the scene happens in Outer Haven in 1995. Maybe I imagined that.

But man real big Boss is looking good, that baby smooth skin compared to Venom.

Venom out there in the trenches earning scars while BB's putting make up on and laughing behind the scenes while this chump takes the heat off him.

I didn't take the 'Operation Intrude N313" tape literally, tbh.

That part of the ending seemed more meta than anything else, and the tape a weak way of saying "I remember MG1".

Why wouldn't you take it literally?

The MSX seeming like a reference to MG1.

Big Boss punching the mirror then seeing a not-reflection walking off in smoke and nothingness.

Nothing about that scene struck me as "This is an event that occurred in canon". Perhaps it did, but I'm pretty sure the primary purpose of the scene was the meta angle, and that Kojima didn't give it more thought than 'Operation Intrude N313 and the MSX are a reference to MG1'.

The worst part of the Venom stuff is that it's so unnecessary. If it actually explained how the fuck Big Boss turned into the villain on MG, sure but Big Boss still ends up doing all the shit in the original MG games while Venom is just another person who does the same thing. It's not even like Venom Snake is doing the dirty work for Big Boss, being nailed to cross to take the fall for all his sins. For the most part he's just a heroic and noble despite all the times where we're supposed to think he's fallen because the horn has grown and he's covered in blood. Huey does more despicable shit in game. It's bizarre how revenge is the theme of chapter 1 but it's mostly Miller and Skullface's thing while even Venom Snake is calm one.

It's just felt like a cheap way to put in a last minute twist and meta thing about how the player is shaping story instead of an actual attempt being the missing link.

"Please don't remember this"

Well even in the first time through the prologue is what Venom is remembered happening, but is still in haze, asking who is supposed to be. The implication is that opening sequence that Ocelot does his magic hypnosis that can turn anyone into one of the greatest soldiers that ever existed during the trip to Afghanistan and Mission 46 is actually what happened before he was mindfreaked, conveniently misremembering only some the details that showed off he's not Big Boss.

Now that I think about it, there's one cutscene that I saw in trailers that I never got in game. Snake screaming in the burned down village. What's the deal with that? I never even saw a burned down village.

How is BB being cool? He is running away on a plan his once enemy devised for him...

His once best friend, then enemy, then not quite an enemy. Either way, whenever we see real big boss in the game, he's undoubtedly way better than the fake one. His lines are delivered with a little more oomph, he says a whole lot more, and he just generally seems more like big boss and less like the mope we play as all game. Kiefer actually does a pretty good job, considering what he had to actually play.

It works, in terms of Venom rejecting that which conflicts with his identity, but it seems like you'd tell the Doctor "Hey, don't show him his face. Don't want to risk screwing all this work up".

All it, and the past trailers, does is allude to the game actually having a 3rd chapter initially, one where Outer Heaven becomes a reality.
The game is sadly sorely unfinished.

That cutscene was cut for whatever reason but the village is still in the game.

That village was meant to be something more.

Like I'm picturing some really grotesque stuff. Diamond Dogs blowing the hell out of it thinking it's enemies and it turns out to be innocents, Diamond Dogs staff involved in a fight in it and XOF drops a bomb on it.... something, the fact it exists, the fact the cutscene exists.... what was it?

Most of the "taboo" scenes are missing and this what angers me.

And no this is not on Kojima, this is totally Konami's fault.

If Psycho Mantis could control Sahelanthropus, why did they need the PAL cards in MGS1? I'm pretty sure Liquid's anger and revenge is still just as potent enough to give Mantis the psychic energy to control REX.

Nah, that would mean innocents being killed in the a personal quest for revenge.

You want Big Boss to look like a demon, or something?

Hm, after Skull Face was dead I thought he will be there when you make mission and fuck with you all the time.

Edit: How do you trigger the cut scene where your soldiers fight each other ?

GMP in the red and low morale.

And for skull face I have a feeling that was what was going to happen before the story was cut. What reason was there for it to happen just once?

Sorry, that's right. I forgot Big Boss is the holier than thou hero of the series.

Negative GMP.

Yeah what was up with that? after Skull Face died Big Boss saw him later but it was never explained why.

It just feels like they had so much more planned for this game but a shitload of stuff just got cut.

The whole mission in the quarantine platform would have been way more interesting if you didn't have those goggles that could identify who was infected. It just rang hollow that Venom find killing the already infected, many of which are asking for death, was such horrible, irredeemable thing.

Skull Face was consumed by his desire for revenge and the last scene in 31 was about that feeling still permeating the world and Snake. They may have killed Skull Face the person but his plan was still in the works.

The problem is that Snake never really shows himself to be consumed by the desire for revenge, poisoned by Skull Face.

This 9/11 stuff is going to end the same as people desperately thinking Hayter was actually in the game and not being serious on twitter.

That wasn't a fuck up on the fan's part. That was a fuck up on Kojima's part. I can't believe he didn't do that.

Missed opportunity #51

I can't believe some people on the Internet are taking the meta element as a sincere "thank you" to the fans from Kojima.

He planned this game 5 years ago. There's no way he could have known this would be his last MGS. He wouldn't build the game's big twist around a farewell message.

He knew exactly what the fans wanted from this game and tricked us into thinking we were getting it. He's not thanking us, if anything he's shown a complete lack of regard for us. He's said many times he knows we want to play as Snake.

This is just him stroking his own ego and looking for more fame. He knows millions were looking forward to his game but he's so "out there" that he fooled them all.

Well it really wasn't genius at all Kojima, it was tiresome. We all knew a body double was a possibility and there were hints throughout the game but I didn't think he'd actually go and do it again. It was stale and predictable. It didn't elevate the story, it just brought it to a flat and stale ending.

Even if it was a "thank you", I sure don't appreciate it because I'm not Big Boss. I'm happy to be my own person unlike Venom.

But that would mean Big Boss having to make the difficult choice, not the morally right choice he made in The Phantom Pain by killing soldiers who couldn't be cured, most of which were asking for death, to stop the parasites from spreading to the rest of the world.

You want Big Boss to look like a demon, or something?

Agreed and it really feels forced, most of the taboo stuff that Kojima planned for the game was just cut.

Remember when Kojima said he's not sure if he can release the game at this state? nothing in this game screams taboo, it got all cut and a visionary (Kojima) was robbed of his future.

You were told ahead of time by Kaz (I think) to basically go in guns a-blazin'. It's up to you as a player to actually pull the trigger, until you get the night vision goggles that will basically force you to. The level of remorse you feel for mowing down those soldiers all saluting you was one of the best moments in the game for me.

I remember the day I kidnapped you, Hissing Capybara. It's your ashes that Venom Snake smeared into his pores.

It wasn't. Only that prick Huey made a fuss about it.

It took away from your heroism, but that is only because you're butchering your own soldiers.
