Nothing about the twist was novel, thematically meaningful, or well executed. There's no basis to call it good.

Finally beat the game last night. I have one question. The scene at the end, where V Snake plays the tape BB sent him. When he flips it over and plays the Operation Intrude 343 side, are we led to believe we're already in the MG1 time period? The door in background has the Diamond Dogs logo, but when smashes the mirror it turns into the Outer Heaven logo. The same room/scene at the beginning of the game also says " Just another day in a war without end - OUTER HEAVEN".

  • Interesting themes are introduced very well but never developed upon. The character arc of snake from amazing soldier to horrible human being was promised in trailers but actually not present at all in-game.

Quiet had a great arc, shame about her not being playable after a certain point. I liked Venom, although he could've had more interaction during cutscenes. Eli and Code Talker were good. Although I liked the twist, game feels like its missing something. I WANT TO BELIEVE (holding out for the reveal).

I'm not sure about the legitimacy of ingsoc, but I definitely feel Kojima has not revealed his full hand. If not today, well, who knows.

Yeah, that has to be in 95. He couldn't have a tape labeled Operation Intrude 343 if it wasn't.
 
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if this came from a Konami employee. I'm inclined to believe the release was pushed up after the Kojima/Konami drama went down, and they had to make deep cuts to the plot to make its closer release date.
When was Kojima planning to release it, looks like 2020 with all that stuff missing.
 
I would trade 150 side ops for 5 more Subsistence mission rehashes.

They could scrap all the side ops and about half of the story missions where you just extract/kill some guy and nothing happens. If they got rid of all of that and added in like 2 or 3 more missions that felt directed.

I don't want missions where you can do the objective however you want. I want the intro, or the quarantine mission, or blowing up tanks and carrying quiet through the sandstorm.

The game is at it's best when it guides you. Having an open world MGS game (or any game) is a bad idea if you want it to have a good story.
 
It hit me this morning as I was putting the pieces together from finishing last night, perhaps the choice to use a cover version of "The Man Who Sold The World" is an additional hint at the body double twist. It could very well just be that Kojima felt the dark synth iteration that Midge Ure performed was more thematically fitting than Bowie's original, but I feel like it was chosen intentionally. Diamond Dogs is very obviously a Bowie reference, so why is the version of a Bowie song we hear a replication and not the original? Could just as easily be a rights thing where Bowie didn't want in or was too expensive, so I won't bet the farm on that. But it was a thought I enjoyed either way.

I actually thought a lot about that too. The initial reveal of the cassette tape in one of the trailers had people making that connection with the song itself, as its kind of a song about a guy dealing with the duality of his personality/other self. When I first heard the song in the game (first time I ever heard the song in general) I thought "what a cool David Bowie song," as I thought Ure's vocals sounded just like him. Its pretty cool that the two artists can be seen as kind of parallel with Big Boss (Bowie original ver. 1970's, when Big Boss entered his coma) and Venom (Ure ver 1980's, when Venom wakes up). It could have just been a happy coincidence though, as the Midge Ure version is just a more 80's sounding track. The original version is more rock based than the more synth version we have in the game.
 
Someone find a leaked Side Ops list from 2014 as well. Want to see if that was cut in half too.

That list is super weird. Does that mean side ops were integrated into the main story? Why is Chapter 1 so long in the final game? So many questions.

I am sure a part of the missing missions were "ller"-missions like some of the ones we have in the game. That kinda drives the story forth, but only in tiny steps, however the other part are important. There were clearly chunks of story and development missing.
 
So in case this reveal has nothing to do with MGS, I already know the next theory that will float around.
This is actually Kojima behind a fake identity for his next project, he's making us feel the phantom pain of missing ending and dead Silent Hills after P.T.

It feel the opposite, I was quickly bored by the intro that constantly robbed me of my power and control, but I can have fun for hours just doing side missions. Getting familiar with the terrain and having to rethink my approaches constantly due the reaction system and different situations in known areas.

Being guided does not mean doing it like intro.
It means missions such as mission 30, or the honey bee or Huey's mission where the game funnels you into a location from one direction and you have to make your way through. The most fun missions from the game as there is a sense of discovery (like woah suddenly this big cool ruin is in front of me, I now have to figure out my way in, or wooo they are all ready for me and I need to sneak in) and progression because of things ramping up at every corner.

This "leak" consists of a random user on Eurogamer.pt claiming he played and finished the game at event, then apparently posted a thread listing every chapter title, before deleting said thread.

Well this is interesting. So it must've been playable? What the fuck has happened here.

Also, don't forget, Gamestop leaked that there were additional playable locations in the US and Russia.

All right guys, so I hope nobody is going to hate on me for that, although I could understand if you do so, but my post from two days ago wasn't real. It was me who created that mission list, since I wanted to see the reactions on it, without letting people know that it was me who wrote it. A big hobby and passion of mine is to write scripts and stuff because I am a big movie-lover. It wasn't my intention to fool you people in first place but to see it as kind of an experiment. Never thought it would become that big of a thing as that it would be posted on various sites. It really surprised me that even as I tried to make the mission names as vague as possible, many people got the idea I had behind some of the titles. I really took my time creating the list and worked around 3-4 hours on it - and I loved it since I am a big fan of the franchise. It was humbling to see some guys saying they love the titles (especially the idea of Chapters 1,2,3,4,V because that is one of the few things I also liked much for myself) and saying it looks and sounds a lot like Kojima. Yet I feel so bad and sorry for having lied to you about that 'leak' because you are an awesome crowd. Since I don't want anyone of you to unsubscribe because of a false leak I thought it would be the best to reveal it was an invented thing. I hope you're not mad at me, and also that you enjoyed the list even though it isn't real. Let's stay strong for the last month of waiting and see how the missions will be names for real And sorry again for my English, it wasn't a lie that I'm Portuguese!

Adding to this, does anything ever come of Miller's statements that Amanda, upon hearing that Chico was MIA and probably dead, was "ready for the worst" but "weirdly elated?"

It's impossible not to feel this way, but at the same time, how is an already 60 hour game supposed to have SO MUCH MORE content?

Did they cut a lot of stuff and replace it with generic open world missions?

Did they turn side ops into main missions?

The Phantom Pain is the perfect name for this game. Something's missing, but everything is there. What is it!?

Some main missions certainly felt like side op fodder.
 
Looks like you guys are talking about the possible thing that might not be a thing but could still be a thing thing but I just had to say that after Mission 45 I sort of lost my motivation to finish. I didn't want Quiet to go. I know it can be "postponed" but I hate it anyway.

I see. Well, Ithink here our tastes simply split, because I enjoyed those the least. Not a fan of hallways (although in this case, giant hallways). Not to say that those missions were bad, just saying, I enjoyed most missions very much, even and sometimes especially if they were in already visited and very open places.

Doesn't add up with earlier leaks, but strange nonetheless.
I mean, it's cleary they changed the structure. From five acts to three acts. Would make more sense than two acts in any case.

It's two characters on one texture, there are two pairs of teeth. They might do that if their textures are always square and they still had some room in it, but usually it would imply it's a texture for the same character or two characters who are always "together", as in they have interchangeable parts.
