I'm fine with being the Medic, but why didn't I get to cut Paz open and do fisting action in the hallucination? This guy was someone who we certainly weren't.
MGS2 is fine, it's an actual game even if it has a lot of cutscenes. I don't mind cutscenes, unless they are used to stretch a short cut game. MGS2 is MGS1 and MG2 and MG1, it plays like a game, and it was in line with the previous ones. MGS4 doesn't, past the second chapter. From there onward it plays like a paint-by-the-numbers book, the "gameplay" is there just for you to finish the story.
MGS4 was great for one chapter, in the middle east. Then it started tanking in the second chapter but still held alright. After that, it was just a rushed game made to be stretched as much as possible so we wouldn't feel half the game is missing. The whole design of chapter 3 was horrible, you just walk and have a chase. Chapter 4 had a Gekkou and those dumb balls, and the level was really tiny. Chapter 5 is a straight hallway.
The boss fights were alright, but I always knew the whole open world approach would work better. Heck, the Frogs fight in MGS4 was the best, and it was kind of a cross with open world because at least you weren't stuck in a small box just dealing with patterns, you were actually fighting agile enemies, with your buddies, in a semi-open environment. That was pretty good.
But really, MGS4 is indeed the worst MGS game to me because it's like 1/5th of a game. They should have just made the whole game set in the middle east to cut down on asset production, and make the most out of that environment, add some day cycle to it to vary the way the battlefield is, etc, done.
What about codecs ?
No codecs, no boss fight. That's how it goes buddy.
although this will probably sound like drama, i need to vent:
gameplay wise, TPP is amazing. most fun i had in a long time. really satisfying, so no buyers remorse at all. Plot wise, besides the pacing and lack of longer cutscenes, until the end, i didn't really have a problem with the story. I mean, yeah, Skullface has a sorta ridiculous underdeveloped motive, i'm not ashamed of my words and deeds, etc.
That ending though... really ruins things in retrospect. It feels like plot wise, all i did was for nothing, even though i makes sense in a realistic way; making a body double.
i got so pissed after finishing the game that i changed all of my computer and phone wallpapers that i was using(MGSV) to others not related... and now i'm considering deleting the game. can't be arsed to play it, for now. REALLY dissapointed.
So true, MGS past the first couple of chapter is awful garbage.
That endless Prague bit, god almighty.
The story is even worse than this one in many respects, for me, there's just more of it, which in that case is a bad thing.

i mean, besides the fact that he's able to do everything that BB did. the concept of a body double to create another target the realistic. the execution of it in the game was not.Excuse me, what ?
I was agreeing with everything until I read that the plot twist was realistic.
like i said, i know it sounds like drama. it probably is. it's not like i'm burning everything MGS related i have. just frustrated with this specific game. like i said, it's not like i hate the game. it's the pinnacle of MGS gameplay for me.Lol some of you guys.
Its like kojima broke into your house and shot your kids. Its just a game with silly storytelling - something he has been doing for the past 28 years.
Hmmm, that's actually a good point, that i cant really argue. i mean, i totally agree with the fact that in general, the game doesn't show anything to portray BB's downfall or anything like that. if i tried to explain why the twist pissed me more, it's because for me, it sorta reminds of the "this is all a dream" trope... which tbf, in a way, the same could be said about the whole game, seeing it barely affects the lore. Why is the twist and not the story itself, giving you this sensation? I mean even that WASN'T a body double, there is really nothing in this story that changes Big Boss forever, except maybe the Motherbase infection thing, and even after that he doesn't seem that traumatized (he's all calm when he lets Huey go).
The real issue isn't the body double idea, the real issue is the complete lack of anything resembling a character changing moment, any drama and anyone fucking going "nuclear".
The only one that seems to lose his mind somewhat is Miller, and even he goes back to normal, once Huey leaves.

Tapes are a far better option for an open world game with downtime, especially one where you spend time poking around in menus doing passive stuff fairly often. I don't think I would be very happy having to listen to Code Talker for 15 minutes between cutscenes but it's not too bad listening to him droning on about CHANGING FEMALE TO MALE PREVENTS COPULATION when I'm just doing something boring.
Its also on motherbase free roam and completely accessible there also. I don't get what you're complaining about here. There's a lot more legitimate reasons to be down on this game, now it seems some people in this thread are actively looking for reasons to be pissed off.
I don't agree. It felt like hell of a ride.
you traveled a lot, the story had a beginning middle and end.
I enjoy replaying MGS 4.
I am never gonna replay MGS 5 despite it having a great gameplay. Funny heh ?
In terms of "games" i'm sure MGS 5 is the best out of them all.
And yet my most hated one. There are games that are more than just pure gameplay. With games like life is strange i thought this was obvious.
Metal Gear Solid 2 also had quite an awful amount of down time. Still a great game.
Would like the receipts on that.
Also, as i said they selected a suitable candidate who was already similar to BB AND you have to adjust for MGS sci fi fuckery.
MGS is full of stuff like this, unless you think all the shit Vamp and all the others do is A-ok.
Not to mention the dumb ass concept of a Metal Gear itself.
That's how I felt. I felt lied to. It's like buying a really nice looking car that you have been waiting to buy, only for it to be a lemon.although this will probably sound like drama, i need to vent:

I still dont get why this game has almost no boss fights.
Awesome boss fights have been a series staple for so long.
To just throw it all away...mind boggling.

It is called suspension of disbelief. I can "believe" that genetic experiments could turn a human into vamp.
I can't believe that a random guy (don't dare telling me again he was selected since he wasn't, he just happened to be there and was a medic) gets a magical surgery that grants him big boss' mind, psyche, face, hair, eyes, voice while we're at it, as well as his exceptional CQC and stealth abilities.
That's going way too far.
although plot holes would be even bigger, that would've been awesome. liked his portrayal on TPP.I feel kaz was the one who really went from heroic to evil goofy villain. His anger, paranoia come through. He shouldve been big boss, really. Not the medic.

Those 2 hours of gameplay in MGS4 are pretty good.
It actually was pretty good.
dat Rex vs Ray.
Yeah I have no qualms with the gameplay. Still mad about the cutscene to gameplay ratio compared to every other game in the series.

How about that Tanegashima gun though? I always use that + BB's corpse and mask to make my enemies scared shitless lol.
that's... actually an interesting topic. i mean, i had the "same" feeling with MoS, as in, when i first watched it, i REALLY loved it, but as time went on, i started disliking some aspects of it. in what way would you compare the two? i'm curious. This game's overall story is like Man Of Steel.
After seeing the trailers of Man Of Steel, I expected a 10/10, but I got a 7/10.
Same happened to MGSV's plot, which is a shame. I hate it because it is the last Kojima MGS and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And I am not even a MGS4 hater, I love every Metal Gear equally for different reasons. MGS2 is best though.

dat Rex vs Ray. Meanwhile TPP doesn't even have the final boss in the game.
How can you people bash MGSV story and like MGS2's one, when it's the precursor of all this bullshit.
MGS2 is the starting point of almost every bad story beat in the MGS series and has like a zillion plot holes.
One ray..fuck that here have a bunch and let's add in an arsenal gear just for fun. How they built it? When did they build it? Fuck it, Philosophers, Patriots... etc.
Hey people liked Otacon, here let's introduce his sister and then kill her immediately afterwards in a dumb way. Why? Because fuck you, here's a parrot.
And the S3 plan is the dumbest plan and twist in the history of games. Who does this? IT makes zero(heh zero, you see, you see) sense.
AI bullshit everywhere, and my God that exposition dump at the end.
Granted MGSV comes close, but still, S3 is far worse than Venom.
The highlight of the game is a pointless mech fight that coasts on nostalgia and supposed story importance. Sounds like MGS4 :^)

Yeah that gun was great, but I think my favourite was the Solar gun.

In my opinion a couple of reasons:
The open world nature makes it hard to create interesting boss fights compared to a close space with multiple objects to interact with. Quiet Boss battle is basically the end 2.0
Finally it's hard to out do yourself with the expectations of previous boss battles. The only interesting twist you can do is with the Metal Gear. The infiltration is basically at the root of everything and it's what basically drives TPP, with this game going open world I expected this.

There are essentially 5 boss fights in the game.
1) Quiet - Alright boss fight, even if it's The End/Crying Wolf again.
2) Man on Fire - Which is what mostly resembles a MGS boss to me, even though it's so easy and short, that it almost doesn't count.
But at least it's something else other than "shoot him dead".
3) Melee Skulls - Which are just some dudes you have to shoot at, with barely any peculiar pattern or gimmick, outside of the rain that can stop them for a minute.
4) Sniper Skulls - Which is basically an harder version of Quiet's fight.
5) Sahalanthropus - Which is incredibly suggestive from a visual standpoint, but gameplay wise it's probably the least inspired Metal Gear fight in the series (of those i've played anyway) you just have to shoot it dead, no particular patterns to follow, nothing creative about it, just shoot rockets at it and run around.
I'm excited to see what Kojima comes up with when he isn't tied to 28 years of existing story and twists and expectations.
What if this was Kojima warning us too with how the game goes
He (Kojima) is Big Boss. After a long break (coma) he awakens and up and leaves to build his own Nation (company). All while this happens, Venom (konami) takes over and rebuilds the mother base. This mother base recruits soldiers (fans) with some old support team. At the end of the game, Venom realizes he may be BB only by name, but never BB. The support team then is basically just playing roles in supporting Venom, BB and/or his clones. There is a huge time jump to this revelations so we never see how or why it happens (the unfinished content/game).
HE WAS WARNING US.

Yeah, his scripts are absolute hogwash. It's weird because sometimes he can nail a line or two. I don't understand how a writer can be so inconsistent.Hopefully all he does is the overall plot, themes, and direction of the cutscenes and leaves the majority of the writing for someone else.
You're all familiar with that famous image summarizing MGS4's ending, I assume? The one intercut with some anime charcter's face for reactions to what's happening?
At the end of that, Big Boss says something along the lines of "At least I got to you in time to save your life..." And then the very next panel is "snake dies anyway LOL"
That was kind of the feeling I got with this game's twist. As far as my experience within MGSV itself goes, it pissed me off to no end. Then I got to thinking about the implications it had further on down the timeline and I got intrigued. Then in the text crawl right after "Big Boss's phantom was killed in the very first game lol"

You're definitely not giving this one enough credit. I'd agree with you if it was in confided space like the MGRay and MGRex fights, and it only had a limited move set, but that wasn't the case. There was a lot of room to move around and hide for one. Also, I felt the Metalic Archea attacks (the sword moves) did a lot to switch things up and keep us moving. Plus, the lunging attacks with The Third Child added a surreal element to it. I felt there was a lot more variety in this fight, compared to just aiming your missiles at the large weakpoints.
You made it sound like it was a carbon copy of the Metal Gear Rex fight, which it clearly wasn't. It was probably my favorite Metal Gear fight in the series, and it actually did a lot to show the proper scale of a Metal Gear battle for once.
