You know what might have made the twist work better? if it was in the middle of the game or something. The reason you're left feeling sort of...empty is because venom never gets a chance to establish himself as a character. In the game, everything you do, you think you're big boss. but then you're told to kind of go back and retroactively attribute all of that to venom snake.

The game never gives your brain a chance to link the character you play as to venom snake, you know what i mean? Give the twist away in the middle, or 75% through, and then let you play the rest of the game knowing you're venom.

It might not work because it goes against the message of "oh we're both big boss." but that's nearly impossible to buy into anyway.
The problem with the twist is that you could smell it from miles away. If you watched the trailers and followed the coverage leading up to the release, even easier. And yet the game tries to dangle question in front of use where the answer is so clear.

How hard was it to just have a post-traumatic and injured Big Boss with memory loss as Venom Snake? A man with a fractured mind whose only motivation is the fleeting memory of his men being slaughtered making him hellbent on revenge is the perfect foundation for "becoming a demon." By the time he regained his memories there'd be no going back because his experiences during the game, things he wouldn't normally do, would've fundamentally changed his worldview and altered him as a person.

But no, magic. The only "demon" in the game is Huey and that whole plot point is fucking comical. Miller is a hard-ass but not a demon. Venom Snake is Christ.

Hell that's exactly what the E3 2013 extended trailer made the game out to be. Kojima couldn't help himself and he just had to add a twist to the story I guess.

So does the subtitle of Ocelot "A rival living a lie" refer to him knowing that Boss is Venom. I have no idea what other lies he is living in.

Also that other tape between Skullface and Code talker was amazing. How was that not a cutscene... KOJIMAAA

I'm guessing those tapes were recorded material for cutscenes that never made the cut. That Paz and Zero conversation really deserved to be a cutscene of its own. Hell, all of the Truth tapes deserved to be in cutscenes.

That could still be the case, he is just a kid here so he gets lost in people's rage more easily. Also he didn't train with the KGB yet.

crazy that he actually goes back to the KGB/russians, though. Would love to know how Mantis goes from flying off into the sunset with eli in (admittedly cut) episode 51 to the boss we see in MGS1.

It's always been strange how much of an affinity Kojima has for Mantis, he shows up in a lot of games. He's probably the most iconic boss from MGS1, which I guess is why.

I think the Mantis/Eli story is by far the most interesting part of this game, but it did raise a bunch of questions about Mantis that need to be answered. Something happens to him post-MGSV to scar him beyond recognition. I guess we know enough to fill in the blanks ourselves (worked for KGB, interrogated criminals, etc.) but if the next Metal Gear we got was a Liquid game with Mantis in it I wouldn't complain. The two of them being childhood friends is a really interesting concept.

Didn't his village burn down? Knowing what we know in MGSV, Mantis is most likely responsible for that, although unwillingly. It's most likely already happened by the time we see him as he's under the care of those researching his ability by that point. He has a very tragic story, always unwillingly at the center of all of these conflicts because of his ability.

I can explain it better. You never do anything knowing that you're venom snake, so it's hard to imagine being venom snake establishing the legend of big boss. If you play through a portion of the game thinking to yourself "I am venom snake, but I am also big boss" i think it works a lot better.

Putting it in the into or very early would have been best.

Since we're ripping off MGS 2 might as well go all the way.

Then, just like 2, the rest of the game can expand on the twist and it's thematic purpose. Instead of cramming all that into one bit at the end.

I mean there's no way the person who leaked this could know some of the actual mission names, then just claim they made it up. So I'm gonna choose to look at this as the game was no where near completion, Kojima was fired and whatever was finished was pushed out. I thought getting a butchered Chapter 2 and a cut Chapter 3 was bad, but if it was 5 Chapters it could mean the actual main theme/purpose of the games story was never revealed. Which is an even worse way to look at all of this.

As far as I know, the community was able to debunk that list entirely. Stuff from Chapters 1 and 2 were pulled from gameplay videos, while some of the later ones were stolen from leaked achievement lists. The rest of it was 100% made up by a reddit user.

It's completely made up. The only reason those missions are in there is because they're listed in the achievements that leaked ages ago.

I'm kinda surprised they didn't ruin Mantis. In fact, they did a pretty good job with him and Eli, I thought. Which is why I'm pissed Mission 51 was cut. Liquid and Mantis are a couple of my favourite characters in the series...of all the things they cut it had to be that? Pisses me off.

It's implied that Eli is only more suitable than Skullface for Mantis because he is a child. I guess his connection to Eli weakend at some point when Eli grew older and maybe even less angry and he connected to other people until he arrived at the KGB. Or maybe he evolved an own personality and didn't need to stay with anyone anymore.

Oh, I watched 0 videos on this game before it came out. Didn't realize that much was revealed, nvm then.

The fact Chapter 1 is a huge chunk of the game (Mission 1-31) should be telling enough of how butchered the game's story became out of all this. Peace Walker was 5 chapters, there's no reason to believe this game wasn't planned to be 5 chapters initially. That said, it's possible they at least wanted to try and do a Chapter 3 to end things properly before shipping the game out but they ran out of time and couldn't do it. Hence us only getting to see Episode 51 in the CE blu-ray and cutting the story down to what we got (which winds up turning out awful -- going from the ashes scene to the hospital again right after is fucked up).

Yeah, Mantis and Liquid were handled really well. Who liquid is in V definitely helps you understand his character in 1.

Totally! give the player time to understand the twist's purpose to the message of the game, rather than asking them to go back and do it after they've finished. It's so much easier for the player to understand that venom is shaping the legend of big boss if you think it throughout the whole game, rather than just thinking "wait, I wasn't big boss?" at the end. So you get the moment of "wait I'm not big boss?" out of the way, then by the end of the game, you're saying to yourself, "I am big boss, and so is jack"

He is a walking floating plot device in V.

He:

-is immune to bullets
-can fly
-controls Metal Gear flawlessly with his mind
-can turn invisible at will
-can teleport
-can move through solid matter

The idea that any character or even army in MGS can beat him suddenly becomes ridiculous.

All of that is rendered moot if you just
switch your controller to port 2

You forgot can apparently make giant flaming man just go and kill themselves(but not really?) under giant robot wheels using his mind.

he was pretty normal in MGS1 and a walking plot device that can do anything in V.

Not saying I really like how powerful he is in V. Since I'm not a fan of retcons. His accomplishments in V is astonishing. He ripped out the English Strain Parasites from Liquid like it was nothing.

Another head scratcher, why did the Patriot AIs trust Ocelot if him and Zero had already fallen out before their creation?

Big Boss and Zero made up before he became a vegetable, which means Zero and Ocelot were also on good terms.

Ocelot also was off doing god knows what during the 90s so he wasn't linked to Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land.

The AIs probably don't give a shit about Zero's relationships anyway, they view themselves as completely seperate.

Most of the reviewers don't really care about the story of MGS. IGN even pointed out that the story was lackluster in their 10/10 review.

Not just reviewers either. There is plenty of people who doesn't care for the story that raves about it, but they are not as invested in the series as people who do care about the story. Yes the story is not a masterpiece. For me the story is campy fun, which is sorely missing in this game.

This game is definitely still a 10/10 though. There's something to be said about fan disappointments as opposed to sheer scale and polish and mechanics.

Honestly, the story could have revolved around cutscenes of D Horse taking shits on members of my own family as a random personal attack against me and it'd still be 10/10 for me because playing it feels so damn good.

MGS V is a very fun toy but a poor art piece.

It isn't a 10/10 for me. It's an 8/10. The reason being the lack of or the disappointing boss battles. I believe MGS boss battles are integral to MGS gameplay. Since this game disappoints in that factor, I knocked it down.
