Is Surface even such a tremendous success? Surface hardware revenue amounted to $2.1B in FY2014, which would give us roughly 3-4M units sold. Great for a non-Apple ultrabook/tablet, but not enough mindshare to make much difference on the phone market.

I clearly wasn't suggesting that Microsoft should aim for less Windows Phone devices sold to match the Surface sales.
What I'm saying is that they need to get power users, press and developers enthusiastic towards a phone, and i believe they should take inspiration from the Surface to accomplish that.

And why are you using FY2014 revenue when we know the revenue from FY2015.
Here's even a comparison between 14 and 15:

Dunno why I used last years data, sorry. Still, I don't think "just hand it over to the Surface division" is an easy solution by itself - Surface created/filled a very specific niche between ultrabooks and tablets, what could they possibly do to create a phone equivalent?

Not much, main problem will still be not enough apps. What MS needs to be successful with phones is to create a full iOS/Android emulator so they can dip into those stores. If anybody can do this it's them.

You can't run Win32 applications on ARM. Continuum is only for Store apps. Remember Windows RT? It's that, but running on a phone.

I'm sure Continuum will be amazing... once Apple does it. With their unmatched developer support and their comparatively low margins on Macs, I could see them take a similar angle in the future.

I dont know, Apple is all about selling devices. They want you to buy iPad, iPhone and Macs. Unlike Microsoft, their future vision is 1 device with 1 OS.

They'd still sell devices. The iPhone has the highest margins and the shortest replacement cycles. They could get more people to buy the (even-higher-margin) high-end models with more memory. Also, they could maybe sell more displays, mice, keyboards... and create even more lock-in.

If Apple can add more use cases for the iPhone and enable people to their phones over the PCs they use now, they win. If they cannibalize their Mac sales in the process, it's no big deal---those represent only a comparatively tiny part of Apples business.

Apps are updated constantly though. Even if there's a quick way to compile an iOS app for Windows phones, it still might not be worth it if the userbase is so tiny.

It's probably not much either way, but what has Windows phone market share being doing the past year?

And so it begins. Secretly I'm still hoping for the 950 to also feature the 810 cpu instead of the 808 cpu that seems to be reserved for the 950XL.

Have the dimensions of the 950 and 950XL been leaked yet?

It kinda weirds me out how different they are; the 950 XL looks like an entirely different model of phone, not like a larger version of the 950.

Much prefer the XL styling tho, so I guess that's good :p

I am most curious in how well the iris scanner will work. Paul Thurrot just mentioned on Twitter that the scanner works like the RealSense cameras on PC and laptop, instant and from “normal distance”. As long as the normal distance is me casually holding the phone and not to my face, this could be a major differentiating feature.

Yeah, the white version seems look better.

The XL might be too big of a phone for me.

Those phones are not easy on the eyes.

I’m reserving judgement until we see them onstage at the event. The Nexus 6P looked silly with that camera hump in early leaks but the actual product looks fantastic.

Also these are the last NOK designed phones. The phone division has since been gutted and the next phone will be designed by the same team that did the Surface.

Hmm at first I was excited, not I'm not so sure, I was waiting for a high quality flagship Windows phone since the 928/925/Icon and it seems they are still going for cheap material outside that metal around the camera lense. But they are also making it over $600.

Maybe it'll be better than the pictures show. But it's been some time. I mean I guess the 830 was ok, but still wasn't really a flagship phone, then the 640 was announced and ended up being a 635 with flash and a slightly bigger screen.

Got my eye on the blue XL. They're still going to have to say some really pretty words to stop me from getting an iPhone this year though.

Glad to hear the only differences between the 950 and XL are screen size, battery, and processor. Initially the 950 was rumored to be less RAM, lower resolution, no QI, etc.

Also quite happy the batteries are removable and they both support microSD expansion. It's almost criminal to not have the latter on Windows Phone, given how nicely it plays with the OS (can install apps, etc).

Actually the only thing I'm not liking about the 950 is probably the screen resolution if it impacts battery life. I'd actually prefer 1080p.

Please make it available in Cyan lol

Would be a sad panda if they don't release it in multiple colours like the previous Lumia phones.

Please let the black and white only rumours be nothing more than just rumours.

The rumor is matte white, matte black and this blue:

I'm looking to pick up a new Surface Pro after the event, but I'm completely unfamiliar with how the hardware makes its way into consumer hands after one of these.

Do they typically roll out some sort of preorder after the event, or is there simply product in the retail channel at some specified date either timed with the event, or shortly thereafter?

Edit: Obligatory "assuming it happens" ..

Preorders with shipping before the end of October. Just my guess.

Official renders
God Microsoft can't put together a decent start screen to save their life. Don't they realise that this is the first thing people see and they go with that awful blue windows 10 photo behind translucent blue tiles. It's an eye sore.
They need to realise that this needs designing too as people are seeing this and windows phone gets a bad rep as being ugly.

The start screen can be modified however which way you like. What they show in the renders is not what you’re stuck with.

I'm pretty sure our Marketing likes to ruin any chance WP has of swaying a user to use the device.

I have to confess I am thinking of doing something I never thought I would do, I am thinking of switching too Windows phone. After the absolutely piss pour showing with the latest Nexus phones from Google I have been investigating my options.

Right off the bat Apple is a no go for the features I want. There are various Android phones that each have a feature I want but no handset that has them all together. This leaves the windows phone.

Hardware wise I like the sound of the 950 (950xl is way too big for my tastes). I just don't have any faith in the windows phone eco-system. I will struggle on with my Nexus 5 for now and see what happens when these new phones are released

Let me guess, decent camera and an SD slot? :p

Well camera not that bothered about it I am honest. I mean I appreciate a phone having a camera but I don't really need a camera with Hubble Telescope Quality optics to take videos of my cat vomiting on the carpet.

But yeah the SD card is now a huge thing for me. I have been micro managing this 12gbs (it's a 16gb Nexus 5) for 2 bloody years and I am sick of micro managing what content I can or cannot take with me where I go.

I do love Qi charging though. For me it was a bloody revelation when I got my first Qi charger. Before wireless charging I was forever forgetting to charge my phone. There were many times when I would go to pick my phone up and see I had forgotten to charge it and there was like 5% power left.

When the Nexus 4 came with Qi charging I thought "meh a gimmick" but I bought a 30 quid charger and I could see how this could improve my phone usage. Now I am a total convert to wireless charging. Unfortunately the Nexus team no longer seem to share a passion for wireless charging, it seems we all want phones 0.0000005mm slimmer so they have ditched wireless charging.
