Destiny - The Taken King |OT| Time to Explain

Think I've found where Bungie hid the grind, finally get enough sword kills to continue the quest line (mayhem made this so much easier), but now I have to collect materials that don't appear anywhere?! I opened like 30 helium coils on the moon and only found 1 of the materials needed, its going to take hours!

Yep, Bungie sure knows how to kill a boner. Absolutely moronic quest/mission. It serves no purpose other than to be a cockblock. What makes it worse is that a lot of those guys, like Luke, played WoW, so they know better.

Haven't had that many engrams, but the last 3 have been 3 the last words, smart loot! Not sure if i can be arsed with the game anymore, a lot of effort for not much reward.

After getting yet another Invective last night, I'm pretty much feeling the same way. Maybe they'll get it right in Year 3.

It took me around d 2 hours or so. Make sure you have a relevant ghost equipped. If you want to you can "cheese" it a bit. Find a node near to a zone transition, pop it, sparrow out until you see the name of the next zone appear then sparrow back and pop it again. Only works if no one else is in your zone.

It is a bit shitty but compared to some of the old grinds it's not too bad...

I still need to do the exotic sword quest for the Solar and Void swords.

What class is best for these? I am guessing Voidwalker and Sunbreaker.

I quit Destiny last October after I got bored grinding to increase a small increment of my light.
Picked it up again with TTK, but three weeks later it seems I'm back where I was in 2014 - grinding for light, but this time not to be 29.3 but to be 293.

Sure, it's a bit more fun, now I don't search for Relic Iron, but I do get to run the same three strikes... Or waste everybody's fun in crucible by going for Fist of Havoc multikills... Or any other nonsensical timewasting quest designed just to have me repeat myself repeat myself...or or or...so I can then spend the next ten minutes doing math - is it better to have a 295 chest with 87 intellect or 294 helmet with 89 discipline etc etc...

I think I'm at the end of my road again... Keep getting Legendary marks that are useless, strange coins that are useless, motes of light that are megauseless...
Three weeks is enough, other games are waiting, and at least there I'll play something new...

got this super duper cool frabjous looking helm for my warlock, tried different shaders, love how it changed it :

don't go for Void Sword with titan. Void kills are a bitch to get in Defender.

Does anyone have any tips or know where I can find the quickest way to level up the gunsmith to level 3?

tips : don't do the armsday prototype before doing Nightfall. It gives you a buff and you get more xp per weapons. Then just play, and pray to drop the white engram, actually a fusion to give to the gunsmith it raise its reputation

I'm considering getting back into this for a bit to play through TTK content and do the Raid. Discovering the 100.io website has single handedly piqued my interest because it organises a group of people to play Destiny with - avoiding the painful experience of looking for a single group on a random website which I always hated.

I'm not sure you actually know what you're doing. All of those things are very useful.

Nightfalls don't give XP bonuses anymore.

Very nice! I've also been lucky getting my Warlock up to 297. Waiting for the reset to do my next raid run.

Btw, anyone using the raid weapons?

Nope I'm doing a Monte Carlo infinite melee build with the sealed grasp of akama.

I guess i use that nice ass sniper, but i don't see my primary changing anytime soon.

Both of two friends that I play with have gotten it and we only started playing again last Friday. In the meantime I'm getting duplicate Invectives.

All of my exotic engrams have been for gauntlets ._.

Speaking of the Zhalos though, is it really that good? I see a lot of potential in the arc jumping, but my friends say its damage isn't great. I still really want one just for its apparent strengths in crowd control.

First time I ever saw it was when some random was doing a public event with me. He was wiping out each group of enemies before I could even kill one dreg. Getting the Zhalos is my only goal in the game now.

Legendary marks are taken by vendors for 280 stuff, all my stuff is 287+. Useless.

Strange coins are taken only bu Xur, again for 280 stuff, and a chance at an engram, but all thosr are exotics that are limited to one slot, and I already have better exotics equipped. Useless.

Motes can be burned to speed up eqiuipment levelling, but you level it by playing anyway, and it's more fun to play instead of holding square for ten minutes. Useless.

Game basically encourages you to collect all sorts of crap that you will never need. So you end up buying shaders and ships for cosmetic purposes just to get rid of your inventory.

Boring as hell.

Stuff from vendors and Xur can be infused and is quality gear.

Motes can also be used to improve rep with vendors.

Exotic engrams sold by Xur can be light 310. Not useless.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume most people probably don't have every single weapon type at 280 alongside 280 armor configurations that support multiple builds for their preferred subclass. It's completely possible you hit endgame and haven't normally ended up with a 280 legendary sniper rifle even though you had a 280 legendary shotgun and fusion rifle. The decoded engrams can start at >290, not seeing why having lower light equipment is preferable or better unless it's specific to your loadout.

I got it and the hawkmoon using that 3 of coins exploit on a level boss. Only use the zhalos now as it does wreck groups (not got much primary weapon choice at the moment). As others said, its pretty poor on bosses, need a good scout or pulse rifle to switch out to.

So I've been playing quite a bit, and I've realised I really dislike the Taken.

I find some of their new traits to be needlessly antagonistic. While one on one, I feel a lot of the new moves they do make the combat more interesting, however when all of them are plonked into a space, it starts to become incomprehensible and frustrating.

For example, the Cabal Shield Taken now blasts you away, on it's own terms a fun way to shake that enemy up
(I especially liked the use of one when finding the stealth drive early on, to disrupt your platforming)
. Fallen Captains now shoot blinding clouds (which if they land, allow them to melee strike you), easy enough to dodge in a well designed combat space. Fallen Vandals now create invincibility bubbles, which again makes this particular enemy type interesting when dealing with just one or two. And the Taken Vex Goblins that grant their buddies invincibility.

However, many of the missions add all of these together, in sometimes quite tight spaces and/or with nowhere to find any respite from the effects; presumably in response to the many cheeses found in vanilla Destiny. Mixing these new traits together leaves you feeling like a pinball in a pinball machine, with little to no control over the combat scenario. There are so many systems that require understanding before shooting, and there isn't time while you're blinded, being blasted 50ft backwards or have 4 immune Taken in front of you blocking your shot of their Vex protectors.

In addition to the game design gripe, they are also aesthetically dull. I don't know how black and white (blueish?) rehashes of existing models were deemed an agreeable look. I am kind of annoyed by them turning up on every planet undermining the fantastic art direction of each. I know exactly what they were trying to achieve with the look, but I can't help but feel there are alternatives to black and white when trying to make the existing enemies look ethereal in some way.

I wonder what everyone else thinks or feels?

Should have another season pass with 2 more DLCs, form the leaks, Forge of Gods and Vex Void :

Yep, should still be the plan I'd imagine. Also somewhat related but while doing a patrol on Venus the other day Ghost said something like "There's been a strong resurgence of Vex on Venus ever since the Taken's arrival". To me that hints that the next DLC is definitely the rumored Vex related one.

For Nightfalls with burns ultimately you will want a well-upgraded shotgun, sniper, and sidearm of every possible elemental damage type. Probably you will want a machinegun of every type as well. Depending on your current gear set that's possibly 1500+ marks that are all money well spent.

Getting Year 2 upgrades for all the old exotics will also take a fair number of marks.

I don't get how anybody can complain that they don't have anything to spend their currency on at this point. I'm running 3 characters and do the dailies every day and I'm nowhere near close to the set of weapons and gear with the stat bonuses and perks I want. That said, yes, eventually vendor items are not going to cut it. But that's kind of an unavoidable eventuality, isn't it?

Hope that 'Forge' one is Cabal related, they're so awesome and underrepresented.

Same. I like the cabal a lot but they're the only ones who haven't been a primary threat in any of the content. Vex were the main threat in vanilla, Hive have gotten two expansions, and the Fallen are well represented all around. Cabal need their own time in the spotlight.

I do think the signal sent out by the crashed Cabal ship in TTK will bring in a bigger cabal force eventually.

Yeah the Hive in their various permutations have had way too much attention. As far as all of the races go in Destiny I find them to be the least interesting actually. Would seem weird to me if we didn't dive deeper into the Cabal at some point. I genuinely enjoy fighting them the most, even the bastard Psions.

Wasn't the Vault of Glass based around them?

Last two exotic engrams I've gotten are both gauntlets as well, and both came from the Taken champion in The Divide. Going to do that some more to see if it's consistent. I did get an exotic primary and exotic special weapon from the Shield Brothers though, so maybe just bad luck.

Man I'm having a real hard time with the last story mission ( Fear's Embrace). Any tips?

Retreating back into the cupboard you spawn near after death can be fairly effective - just don't forget to poke your head out every now and then to kill Blights (the big orbs that spawn more Taken). Failing that, might need to recruit some help. That mission can be a bitch. What format?

Yeah it's pretty hard.
If you are just on about the boss. Go to middle, run back to the outside. Kill the 4 shield dudes. Kill the adds and then the orb. Snipe echo in the head 3 times. Kill the adds on your right as they spawn with a rocket finish off the orb. Keep running round and sort the other one. Kill the 2 stealthed vex. 3 headshots with sniper on echo. And just repeat basically. If your a warlock go sunsinger will give you a second chance. Black Spindle wrecks the echo.

Make sure you clear everything before you inflict more dmg on the boss. The enemy spawns are based on dmg dealt to him.

I really like the Taken. First enemies in destiny besides vog to actually be challenging on their own merits. Like the Rasputin strike on heroic. Love it.

My friend and I are looking for a group to run Kings Fall with on PS4. I'm a Warlock 296 light, he's a Hunter 295. This will be our first time running, but we're good team players with mics.

Hoping to run tonight around 8pm Pacific Time or so. Any PS4 players with a group or looking to form a group that we could run with?

I agree with you, I don't mind the way they look but the abilities they all have at their disposal can become a little too much. There is no reason in an encounter you should have more than 2 Taken captains throwing that blinding smoke at you. It's just dumb.

After a while, when every one is just shooting at you constantly it just becomes noise. And the thing I still hate about the enemy encounters in Destiny is stuff like the Wizards that just constantly bombard you with those stupid arc balls. You screen just keeps shaking constantly. The enemy attacks that just cover your screen and just keeps shaking you every damn time with no respite. Hive knights with boomers, Vex Minotaur with boomers and so on. I can't stand it, they need to tone that shit down.

So I've been playing quite a bit, and I've realised I really dislike the Taken, etc.

I really like them. Design-wise, weak in concept but strong in execution. And gameplay-wise, they're exactly what the game needed. You know what each can do after your first meeting and deal with them accordingly. Captains go first (because fuck those guys), Goblins can usually be dealt with before they break out the shield beams... they just work better together than any other enemy types in the game. Even in tight spaces, there are answers - sword attacks prevent Phalanx ejections, nades/rockets in the right place get rid of shield donors... it's just a level of enemy encounter design to learn and adapt to, and that wasn't really there in Vanilla.

Probably helps to mention which platform. :P

I discussed this with my partner, I like it being frenetic too. I feel moments in vanilla Destiny do this brilliantly.

But the encounters in TTK appear to be more spam than design. It's often overwhelming to the point that I can't take enough information from the encounter to improve my strategy. The only thing I can do is level up more or back right out and work through it from a distance. And that's not the kind of fun Destiny is most of the time.

As I said in the post, I actually like the new abilities the Taken have. They just aren't used with any restraint. And in fact I feel like that 'all-in' design extends to vanilla enemies in the TTK expansion, in some cases. Especially free-roaming on the Dreadnaught. Just fodder for the new special abilities?
