Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

On the EC9300 i see these....dimples on the screen, only when it's turned off. I swear it almost look those were dents...but it doesn't seem to be anything. Anyone else see this too?

Alright so I've always wanted an OLED TV, and with points I can buy this one for about $600 at Best Buy.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-55-c...lack/7846019.p?id=1219295374459&skuId=7846019

Is there any reason not to buy this one in comparison to the newer model?

I'm in the same boat, but I would be paying $1150(selling my current tv for $500 and getting $150 cash back on my credit card.) I need a little push so I can finally pull the trigger on this thing.

A few people on here have this tv and I ordered mine a few days ago, will receive it Friday. I'll be sure to post my impressions, especially comparing it to my Vizio M. All impressions/reviews point to it being incredible

My step dad used to own an AV store and has a bunch of Pioneer Elites and some other high end tvs, and this is the one he's using now.

I own the newer EG9100 model. The differences are negligible.

-back panel is white on the 9100 vs black on the 9300
-different stand. Boomerang shaped metal stand
-webOS 2.0 out of the box vs having to get it via firmware upgrade (did the EC9300 get this yet? heard it was delayed)
-EG9100 can output DD/DTS 5.1 via its optical port. EC9300 downsamples to PCM stereo. Great feature for those with older receivers lacking HDMI. I use it to get surround sound from the built in Netflix, Amazon, and Youtube apps.

It can NOT access 4k streams and downsample to 1080p. Some on AVS thought this was the case due to some incorrect spec leaks, but this has been proven false by multiple owners.

For the same price, I would go with the EG9100. If the EC9300 is going to run a few hundred less, go with that. They're pretty much identical sets and use the same panels.

Yeah, I can see them when the TV is off and there's light reflecting off it.

Yeah, its normal. You'll notice they're all regularly placed.

Good good, no worries then.

Each time i power on this telly and i sit in front of it....it's just a special moment really. I've only had it for a week or two now and i can easily declare it the best TV i've ever had. And shit....is this thing THIN!

The 9100 is about $600 more though, and I'm unsure if it's worth the extra cash. I dunno. Will try to make a decision by the weekend.

That's why I said at the end of my post to go for the 9300 if it's cheaper. The differences are not even close to being worth $600. I got lucky and scored the 9100 for $1700 delivered, otherwise I'd have a 9300.

This is incorrect. The 9300 (or at least the Euro version 55EC930V) does output both DD and DTS via both its optical port and HDMI via ARC, both from webos apps and passing through from an HDMI source. You just need to select the output to 'auto' and not PCM. 100% works as this is how my TV is set up with my AV receiver.

I also think the 9300 has a much nicer looking stand than the 9100. The 9300 also has an additional HDMI port.

But the major potential benefit of the 9100 is a reduction in green/pink stains/tints, although this is still to be confirmed.

Given the current huge price difference (in the UK at least) I would absolutely go for the 9300. At the same price I'd consider the 9100 if only for the potential for a more uniform panel.

Holy shit, today i noticed what a world of difference certain settings can make. I am talking about the brightness setting. Since day one i had this on 50 or actually above, now today thanks to PirateBen here i decided to put the brightness at 41 , the TV's black level at high and on my Xbox One the color space at RGB PC. I finally have the perfect darkness that i've always wanted in games. Nighttime in GTA V truly is like real life nighttime now. Just tried out Tomb Raider and man...i am loving these beautiful pitch black dark caves. Always thought the brightness in Styx Master of Shadows was terrible bright....now it's absolutely perfect.

Anyone want to comment on this TV deal?

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/65in-4..._LS&siteID=lw9MynSeamY-UMBDuH7egjFcyMPOAAXPQQ

RCA 65' 4k for $798.

Slickdeals census is that it is a great price for an entry 4k TV. Should I stay away from this and save up to buy my first 4k from a more trusted brand? I'm very tempted to bite.

Don't get an RCA, they're garbage. I guarantee color accuracy will be way off, the blacks will suck ass, and the input lag will be atrocious. If you want a decent and respectable entry level 4K tv go with a Vizio.

QFT.

There's a reason places like hospitals use RCA sets as their info monitors by elevators and stuff. They're shit.

Yay! :)

I guess for everyone's benefit I'll repeat the settings I use so others with the LG OLED can try. (Obviously with the huge caveat that each set might benefit from slightly different settings and of course each individual will have their preferred settings).

So I'll start off by saying that I use a PS4 for all movie viewing (Blu Ray and Netflix etc.) and games obviously; with that said it's really important to first highlight the importance of picking the right RGB setting in system settings (I believe there was another big thread about this once on GAF). Anyway so keeping in mind the PS4s RGB settings (as well as the importance of picking the right black level setting), the best setup for me, which avoids the crushing of blacks, is:

For movie viewing:
- Picture Mode: Expert 1 (with settings listed below)
- RGB Limited
- Black Level High

For game playing:
- Picture Mode: Game (default with 'Low' Super Resolution)
- RGB Full
- Black Level: High

In both instances I find that setting the Black level to 'Low' crushes the blacks way too much and you lose a lot of detail (especially with movies).

On games 'Low' is not as extreme / bad as on movies, and night time scenes in things like MGSV, GTAV, Witcher 3 are cool and very dark / atmospheric, but you are still losing detail and in certain games (like Destiny for me) it's actually hard to see in dark areas; so not great for gameplay!

One other point: I keep my OLED level quite low; I sometimes increase it a little just to mess around with certain films and depending on whether I have the lights on in the room or not, but tend not to go over 70. Similar with brightness, it's important to keep this low when you set Black level to 'High' because the brightness setting - confusingly - doesn't actually adjust brightness, it adjusts black levels (similarly the contrast setting actually adjusts white levels)!

Anyway all that said - here are my settings for movies / non-game viewing:

Picture Mode:Expert 1
OLED Light: 57
Contrast: 75
Brightness: 41
H Sharpness: 10
V Sharpness: 10
Colour: 50
Tint: 0
Aspect Ratio: Just Scan

Expert Control
Dynamic Contrast: Off
Super Resolution: Off
Colour Gamut: Standard
Edge Enhancer: Off
Colour Filter: Off
Expert Pattern: Off
Gamma: 2.4

Picture Option
Noise Reduction: Off
MPEG Noise Reduction: Off
Black Level: High
Real Cinema: On
Motion Eye Care: Off
TruMotion: Off

Yep, I still find it funny that so many people are talking about horrible judder on these OLEDs. I'm like "What? Have you ever changed the settings on your TV, like, EVER?"

I'm playing on XB1 primarily so I'll post my settings here when I get a chance, for those that are interested. I have zero judder. Not in games, not in movies, not in watching basic cable through the RF antenna. None. Blacks look fine, albeit a bit crushed because Xbox One and all, but other than that everything has been aces with this set. It's the happiest I've ever been with a new TV purchase.

The Vizio M is a stellar TV. I think the issue with the sharp is the high input lag. We are talking about 18ms on the Vizio, which is incredible. The picture is tremendous watching movies and games. The black level is one of he best I've seen on a tv, and this thing gets great ratings. The one draw back is the dirty screen effect, which I think is pretty common in LED tvs. I really only notice it playing Bf4, and not at all in halo. I've never noticed it in a movie. This tv is seriously good and Netflix 4K (which you can get from the App native to the tv) is astounding.

For $850 the tv is a complete steal.

I did order the EC9300 a few days ago and I was watching 1080p Netflix last night (on the M) and was wondering if I had wasted my money upgrading, it looks that good. Granted I haven't seen that OLED greatness yet.

I have the 50" Vizio M50, and I love it. It was a good buy.
There are some things to consider though.

The viewing angle is not super wide, so that should be taken into consideration, anything out of a 45-60° is going to lose color and contrast.

The input lag is superlow for a 4k TV, around 19ms.
And the 4k upscaling is great.

Also, all this for the price. Obviously you can find better by paying 3 or 4 times the price

Don't know if this is the place to ask but...

Recently got a Samsung UE55J7000 UHD TV and after the initial setup an calibration with my blu-ray player I decided to finally connect my PC and reinstall Win 8.

I have basically tried all HDMI inputs in the one connect mini box and it always says "No signal" no matter what I set as source for the different inputs (DVI-PC, PC, DVI device...).

Thing is, I admit my PC is not state of the art and has an Nvidia GTX295 with DVI ports only. I have used a DVI to HDMI cable and a DVI to HDMI adaptor with a brand new HDMI cable to no avail. However, if I hook my PC to a PC monitor, I have signal with no issues.

Is it because the TV doesn't recognize the resolution used by the bios? Should I install Win 8 using that PC monitor and then when that is done, connect it to the new TV?

Help woud be appreciated. Thanks

almost for sure the TV will not display the bios boot up, but thats only a few seconds, what happens once it boots up to the login screen? Still no signal?

To the guys with the OLEDs; any chance we can have some pictures with some games on it? Preferably some dark games.

Oh, and does everyone here with the EC9300 have the pink/green tint problem?

My wife's a photographer, I'll see what she can do once we get it all setup. I imagine it's a little difficult.

Cool to know, CNET review lied to me then! Forgot about the extra HDMI port too.

I don't have the pink/green tint issue; at least I haven't noticed my set having it (but then I don't often sit at a narrow angle when viewing and from my understanding the tint is more apparent when viewing from an angle). Will try to take some pics of dark areas later but I posted some pics earlier in the thread when I first got it... here you go:

Just moved house, not even unpacked yet and don't even have my TV cabinet but my LG OLED has arrived and it's a beauty. First thing I did out of box was to adjust the default picture settings and it's just wow.

Did a quick test with the Bladerunner blu-ray and then MGSV...

I jumped in with the Vizio M50-c1. The picture quality is superb, I've tested everything I could last night. PC input looks great and has no mouse lag at all, even running at 4096 x 2160 resolution (GTX 970).

It's super easy to setup and save custom picture configurations- I setup a picture mode for movies, which is the only time I like the soap opera effect (motion smoothing).

I've named all my inputs, a feature my older TV didn't have. It really takes the guess work out of switching sources. The upscaling is fantastic, colors look amazing. I'm also really happy that the TV has digital audio output (both optical and hdmi)- so no matter what I'm looking at on screen, the sound goes to my sound bar.

Absolutely thrilled with the TV so far and I can't wait to leave work today. I really feel like my old games have new life on this Vizio M series. Happy camper here.

Np. :) Nope to both. Not sure if those are issues out of the box or ones that occur over time (which I doubt, from what I understand the image actually improves over time) but in the month I've had it I've not noticed any defects or noticeable image /screen issues thankfully.

Obviously this is just my experience and others have noted these issues with the set so obviously these issues do occur so worth bearing in mind for people considering it.

Thanks for answering. I'm strongly considering one.

Luckily, the biggest electronics stores here all offer a 30 days return option, so I might just try one out.

How well does it handle motion? do you see a lot of streaking edges? How well can you fine tune the motion estimating effect? Does it add a lot of SOE?

Well at the moment I am using the Game mode for all my gaming on Xbox One and Wii U. I am someone who isn't easily satisfied when it comes to PQ, very picky, haha, so I could be using completely different settings tomorrow. But since I do want to make sure I have a decent input lag and a great PQ I might stay with this.

At the moment my settings are:

Picture Mode: Game
Aspect Ratio: Just Scan

Picture>picture adjust

OLED LIGHT: 100 (I just love how bright this is.)
Contrast: 100 (I know it should be at 90 otherwise I crush whites, have yet to change it though)

Brightness: 41
Sharpness : 15
Colour: 70
Tint: 0
Colour temperature : C20

Advanced controls

Dynamic contrast: off
Colour extension engine : off
Super resolution : Low
Gamma: High

Picture options

All off except black level at high

Xbox One color space at PC RGB.

There are slider bars for "Reduce Motion Blur" and "Reduce Judder" so you can make anything look amazing if you just tweak the settings a bit, which is normal for any TV.
Motion is amazing. If you're playing a game, just turn on on Game Mode.

I have the TV working amazing with no noticeable input lag and a super clear, bright, clean image. The only time I like to turn on the SOA effect is with movies, the smooth motion is nice to watch. I have zero disappointment with this TV.

You did not waste your money, but as always with TVs you've definitely "picked your poison." You see, I have an EC9300 in my bedroom, and I like it quite a bit because it reminds me of fantastic plasma sets I used to own and their contrast, colors, and black levels. That being said, I can't get used to the "screen door effect" coupled with the automatic brightness limiter when displaying light shades of grey and/or whites. In other words, the gaps between white pixels on a 55" 1080p OLED are too wide for my tastes, and I wouldn't personally play games on it. Motion resolution isn't great either compared to high-end LCD/LEDs, so there's also that.

In any case, I am hoping Panasonic will work on improving the input lag on their future 4K OLED sets. ABL would still be an issue, but with 4K pixels are small enough for me not to notice them. As far as Vizios are concerned, I hear the affordable 2015 M sets are terrific for gaming and watching movies in dark rooms. I've also heard the 65" (and 120"?) Reference Series by Vizio are the best 4K LCD/LED TV ever produced with their 384 local dimming zones, etc, etc. If the input lag on them is as low as advertised I might elect the 65" as my gaming TV until Panasonic sorts out the input lag issues with their 4K OLEDs.

Well those were my thoughts as I was waiting for delivery. I plugged it in and was blown away. The picture is incredible. I put Mad Max in, which looked great on the M, but nothin like this OLED. It's insane.

Ah I see, so that is why I see the screen dimming when I go to the Xbox One party app for example. I thought I was seeing things. That being said, I have not seen any of this while gaming. So if it's only going to be in the party app... I can live with that.

When/why does this ABL thing kick in usually? I have to say that I haven't watched any movies on it yet, been too busy gaming on it, haha.

It's used to prevent burn-in. From my understanding, there's two types of ABL, one that kicks in on static screens and the other when overall brightness gets too high - like when displaying a mostly white screen.

I honestly haven't seen the latter kick in very often and as far as dimming on static screens, it doesn't affect regular content so that's a non-issue. Could be annoying if you plan on using the display as a monitor though, since it will kick in when reading web pages, etc.

What x3sphere said. Image retention/burn-in prevention, and a "light output" limitation inherent to the technology. Like I said, it's a matter of picking which flaws/limitations you can live with. ;-)

Good stuff then, prevention for IR is a very good thing. I've been gaming a lot on the TV these two weeks of owning it and i have not had any of those kind of annoyances in games and i tried a shitload of games. It also seems the green tinge and vertical banding that i noticed at first is either gone or just not that visible anymore. Or maybe because i am not paying any attention to it. Incredibly happy with this, i consider it one of my best purchases in years.

So I just got my Vizio M series, which I'm throughly enjoying. However, I can not get 60hz at 2160p. I'm using the HDMI 5 port and the Amazon High Speed HDMI cables with a GTX 970. I think it may be the cable itself since the Amazon page says, "4k at 30 fps maximum." However, it says it's HDMI 1.4 and I assumed that it would support 4k at 60hz. I've tried other HDMI cables and no succes either. Should I buy a HDMI that supports 18gbps or do all HDMI 1.4 already support that?

I've also tried to create a custom resolution, but since there is already an option for 2160p at 60hz (it goes black and reverts to 1080p) I can't create a custom resolution. I have no idea what to do lol.

It also seems the green tinge and vertical banding that i noticed at first is either gone or just not that visible anymore. Or maybe because i am not paying any attention to it. Incredibly happy with this, i consider it one of my best purchases in years.

Yeah I've had mine for 7 months now and I'm still in awe of the PQ it puts out. Never was this happy with any of the LCD's I owned in the past. I've said it before, but going to OLED is the biggest jump since SD -> HD for me.

I believe the M series uses an older HDMI 2.0 chipset limited to 10.2Gbps similar to most 2014 models. It can only do 4K/60 at 4:2:0.
