Tabata explains the reason behind FFXV main cast's outfit.

In this exclusive clip we can see a group of brave warriors performing a pre battle ritual in full battle gear:

It's basically the Haka of this world

...you want to mod every character into a 1000-year-old dragon?

Lol that came out wrong.

Nah, I just want a mod that makes the main cast look like it wasn't designed to appeal to teen girls.

Here's the nighttime version, where he looks even more battle ready IMO. Ready for a sword fight, specifically.
*p*

dear Tabata, can one of the ways the crew can raise money is by working at a strip club?! #fantasybasedonfeedback

On topic, don't really think they needed to explain why they dress that way.

I think having it be "modern" still isn't an excuse.
Look at these rosters of "realistic" Final Fantasy games and look how colorful and diverse they are.

So much color and variety. Even in the Nomura-designed stuff, the outfits were vibrant, the cast wildly diverse, and there was enough flair to fuel a decade's worth of pride parades. FF15's cast really comes across as dour and mediocre by comparison to every Final Fantasy game's designs, not just the medieval high fantasy ones.

Yeah. XV's design direction seems to be following the footstep of VII and VIII with the more realistic art style, except Nomura and ROEN said, fuck all the colours, black is enough and we have the lore to justify it. Oh and no females allowed.

At least in terms of aesthetics and diversity, XV's cast might very well be the weakest of the series or even JRPG as a whole. Honestly can't think of a single JRPG that stars 4 young males, all wearing black leather outfits.

That said, I think there'll be alternate outfits. There has to be.

I don't get why people still complain about the outfits. It is something we have known about for the longest time that they all wore black. So i don't think he needed to justify it, since it was pretty much the same explanation Nomura gave for it back then.

Why would he need to apologize for the designs? I like them. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Also, they're from the Nomura era. XV replaced Stella with Luna and changed Regis, but the updated party design can be seen in the 2011 trailer, back when it was still Versus and on PS3. Why would he have to talk about the vision changing when it didn't?

He's explaining the in-game reason for the clothes, not explaining the development reason why they changed. That should be asked to Nomura, not Tabata.

The 2011 trailer had the original outfits. These new ones didn't premiere until after the project rebooted in 2013. They're also abhorrently bad designs but none of that relates to what I was trying to say. I was saying Tabata should treat the outfits like he did the change in direction for the title, which is to say that that's the direction they've decided to take, it won't be changed at this stage and he hopes that we understand and will enjoy it. Giving it a contrived reason in the story that only makes the outfits more ludicrous was a silly way to spin it.

And he chose to address this question, presumably because people are complaining. I don't think he needed/needs to apologize, but if he absolutely had to bring this up this was a bad way to do it.

No big deal imho. People still whining about boy band outfits are the same who lack basic sense for creativity.

Usually the same people who advocate censorship of designs over minor details.

Er, I think the outfits are the most generic I've seen in nearly three decades with the series, precisely because I think they look uncreative and generic and something you can just buy off the rack at a trendy store, lacking the actual creativity and design to create an entirely brand new fashion for a fantasy world.

... And I in no way, shape, or form advocate censorship of designs over minor details.

I'm just critical of it.

2011 trailer had Roen's designed outfits actually. In fact, there was a short 40s trailer back in 2010 that had Roen's designed outfit for Noctis.

It borrows from avant-garde high fashion designers such as Julius, Rick Owens, Boris Bidjan Saberi, Alexandre Plokhov, Ann Demeulemeester, Damir Doma, etc.

I hope we see a lot more pieces like that in the game.

I like it less now that he gave this answer. Just leave it be, it's a fantasy RPG. Of course their clothing is ridiculous.

Yeah I mean it doesn't bother me when people say it. I just find them wasting their breath lol

This is almost as bad as Quiet's reasoning for the way she dresses in MGSV.

Nowhere near as bad. They wear black cause their country's traditional color is black.

It makes sense and doesn't require leagues of suspension of disbelief.

Unlike Quiet on the other hand where,
she needs to be half naked in order to breathe since her skin is her lungs but for some reason needs all of her skin to showing. Also let's not forget that the other characters that have the same thing as her wear normal clothes.

Why do you think it's stupid? Seems pretty cool to me to actually incorporate realistic clothing, instead of just making stuff up, which usually looks completely silly and pointless.

The contract. They've said that they've had difficulties with changing appearances because of Roen. It seems like it's disabling them in some cases.

And I bet someone else could have come with something equally as good if not better.

The clothing worn by the four main characters is the official battle gear of the Kingdom of Lucis.
Noctis is a member of the royal family and the other three characters are parts of various Lucian national organisations and they are each wearing the specific battle dress relevant to their individual stations.
In the Kingdom of Lucis where our heroes reside, the colour black has historically been treated as a special colour. Because of this, the attire of the royal family and those in occupations closely tied to them are unified by having black as a base colouring. This part of the lore is the reason why the outfits of all four main characters are black. For the finished game we also intend on having their clothing having effects in battle and not just being a part of the world and its background. So watch out for that too!

Effects in battle? Damageable clothes as in Tabata's The 3rd Birthday?

I stand corrected! I knew Noctis was always in his Roen garbage but the 2011 gameplay trailer made it tough to see the changes on the secondary party members. Were they present in the CG there as well?

At least there's potential for an alternate costume for each character. The suit is totally bomb.

Yes, every piece of new footage from 2008 has had Roen for the main characters.

Well, everything other than the DKS3713 Trailer. The end of that trailer had Roen stuff though.

Could've just said they were caught off guard and never, ever had the chance to change into something more appropriate for battle.

Or they're super humans and when you're a super human who cares. Your clothing and armor would be destroyed before you are anyway.

Unless you're the hulk, then you have the world's most indestructible pants

Its funny that they feel the need to explain this at all .

But ok, i will take battle ready shirtless guy if thats the honorable custom of the Kingdom of Lucís.

....riggghhht.

While we are on the topic of ffxv designs: how come there are no fat/chubby male main characters. There seems to be no diversity at all among the main male cast.

I only see a choice between ripped, and super slim and chiseled. Wow, much representation.

You've mistaken disliking something and wanting it to change for censorship. The two concepts are not the same. Also what constitutes a" basic sense for creativity"? Is that just new coded language for stop disliking what I like?

Didn't say anything we didn't already predict about the usage of black. We knew it was "special" from the get go, doesn't take a wizard to see it's the theme of Lucis.

Only interesting part to this is the clothing gear based on the station. That's it.
