Tabata explains the reason behind FFXV main cast's outfit.

That shit actually better be in. They went into the effort of modeling a basketball and giving Gladio a unique animation so I must assume we're getting a basketball mini game.

Shirtless Gladio vs. Shirtless Cindy basketball mini game? There would be a lot of heated jockeying for position in the box, and Gladio would likely double dribble, but in the end he'd likely come out on top.

Wait, is that model actually usable ingame?

Maybe. How else can we see the entire tattoo aside from camera tricks? Hmmm?

Maybe this one will be usable too:

This is equally as ridiculous as explaining sexist female depictions of "armour".

How can it be battle garb when you leave it undone and openly expose skin?! Seriously, I'd actually believe Kojima's explanation for Quiet before I believed this garbage.

Just admit you wanted them to look a different kind of pretty rock musician this time, Nomura, and be done with it.

Similarly, Kefka's mental state also explains his fashion choices well enough - a man deluded and arrogant enough to build a mockery of the Pieta with his face on it wouldn't be above dressing in some eccentric ways to attract attention.

Exactly. He looks like a jester and it makes perfect sense from the way he talks, his madness and mockery. There wasn't really any explanation required for his design because it was perfectly explained through his personality.

"Read my lips—mercy is for wimps! There's a reason "oppose" rhymes with "dispose"...If they get in your way, kill them!"

EDIT: Also it was and still is fairly common trope to associate a jester or clown with madness and horror. Clowns and jester's can be scary for many.

Basically it's the equivalent of Bikini armor for Gladio.

It's intended to be attractive, and definitely implausible for something he'd be fighting in, but an open shirt isn't anywhere near a bikini. It's closer to a set of casual clothes which emphasise as much cleavage as possible, but aren't particularly revealing otherwise.

Maybe this one will be usable too:

If the game has a Bloated Prompto model, no currently existing metric could measure the amount of creepy fanart that it'd be used for.

This reasoning is fine.

The game is a work of fiction. Fiction shouldn't be constrained by the rules of reality at all. If it was, most of the more interesting works of fiction we've had in the past wouldn't exist. You know sci-fi? Yeah, that's all gone now. Just because you think the outfit makes no sense for people in the real world to wear, doesn't mean it shouldn't exist.

The main reaason is, because it's not real.

A little OT but they should just go dark until we get a damn release date now. There's no middle ground with these guys. Either its years upon years of silence or constant information overload about stuff that don't matter.

Unless there are significant things to discuss, like the release date or a proper trailer, just be quiet Tabata. At this rate I would've finished high school, college, university, gotten married and had a kid by the time it's finally out in late 2016 or possibly even 2017. That's an absolute disgrace.

Best wishes.

Wish these devs and Hideo for that matter would just admit that it is eye candy. Nothing wrong here, I don't care. Also I like the guy in yellow. I get that it's a fantasy game so enjoy! I know I will.

Yeah I wish he'd stop feeling he has to justify all the choices made. There needs to be a balance between listening to feedback and sticking to "the plan", otherwise if you just listen to feedback the game will never be done and look totally different to how it first looked. Manual weapon switching was definitely the best thing brought by feedback so far, but it was already sorta planned anyway.

All I want to see from FFXV is progress (and a release date). Just feels like a lot of the game is still up in the air, not everything's set in stone and I would think it really should be at this point surely.

They all just look like they're in some cringeworthy boy band. Real shame since the world looks pretty and they look so out of place in it.

FF12 remains the most beautiful.

The problem with such an admission would be people calling the developers sexist or shallow or pandering or whatever for giving people what they want. This is why radio silence is the best. You make a fool of yourself no matter what you say. It never comes off well saying you're making a design for the purpose of it looking sexy, even when it's the truth.

I think in their capital they look perfectly fitting. Of course when you travel to new worlds the idea itself is of a stranger in foreigner lands so you must feel out of place for sense of wonder. But considering this is a jRPG coming from Japan I must say they're pretty natural looking among the genre.

The entire point is that they look out of place. They're rich nobles from Shinjuku.

This , their kingdom has strived far better than most due to the crystal or whatever.
There isnt a single car like theirs in the entire game region.. even in the demo you see people commenting on the car at the gas station.
notice how almost everyone else dresses 'normally'

Seriously.
In fiction, not every design decision has to have a practical implication, infact, none of them have to.
That's true.

At the same time, within whatever work of fiction, a character's dress is justified even if it's not explained. The difference here is that Tabata did the explaining. I don't see a difference in function.

There are some things you could just leave up to imagination, though. I think this is one of those things.

The only thing that needs explaining is why they'd cover Gladiolus's body with such an ugly tattoo. And why's he's wearing a shirt. And why he isn't the protagonist. Why.

This is equally as ridiculous as explaining sexist female depictions of "armour".
Yep pretty much.

"You see, her boobs are hanging out of her suit of armour because she lives in a hot climate see, so it has been adopted as the traditional armour of the Knights Of The Dutchy Of Kjhangchabob and that's just how it is"

The only thing that needs explaining is why they'd cover Gladiolus's body with such an ugly tattoo. And why's he's wearing a shirt. And why he isn't the protagonist. Why.

The shirt is necessary - if he were topless the entire game, the impact would be reduced. Gladiolus slowly losing more and more of his clothing as the plot progresses is a crucial part of the narrative as a whole, as well as his character arc; it can't be rushed.

Also, in regards to the tattoo, you can tell they didn't intend people to see the armpit, the texture warping looks horrendous there. I guess it won't be that apparent if you'll be watching the animation from a distance ingame, though.

The difference here is that Tabata did the explaining.

That's probably the main problem. Given the way protagonists of past games have looked, they really didn't have to attempt a justification, let alone one so half-hearted and bizarre.

Seems legit. Personally, I think open shirt guy should do whatever he needs to do to improve his battle performance. He could even take his shirt off, if that would help. Just spitballing here.

See? Look how battle ready he looks. This should be his default costume tbh. For practical purposes of course. I mean, he's probably going to have to fight a lot. And it's one less article of clothing to wash when he gets all dusty and has to scrub the grime off in a river while the sun catches his rippling contours.

Look, it's a role playing game. I'm trying to think ahead, OK? Someone's got to look after these anime boys.

Pls be real.

I mean sure, there have been official uniforms done by famous fashion designers. I can think of one really famous one back in the 40s.

They should have gone the Snow route. Snow's weapon is his coat because of the emblem on it.

Gladiolus should get power from his tattoos and thus be shirtless all the time
"You see, his tattoos are magic, and are so powerful that he is unable to cover them with clothing"

Or they could go the Bayonetta route, which is almost the same thing. I love it.

It's an improvement, but it's still too restrictive to be practical. This is another situation where Yoshida shows how far ahead he is in terms of believable costume design compared to Roen and Nomura - look at how comfortable and supportive the outfits he designed for Ashley Riot and Sydney Losstarot were. The latter in particular would be a far more realistic and natural direction to take Gladiolus' clothing.
