Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Just paid for a 65" flat OLED EF9500.

Getting it Friday. Beyond excited :D

Gonna have a stack of movies ready to drool over after setting it up!

Though also knocking on wood that I won't have to play the panel lottery. We'll see.
Really want that TV but 59ms lag kills it for me :(

I hope we see improvements on next year's models.

I hate to see it too. The problem is that they don't target these TVs for gamers so I'm sure input lag is something manufacturers are least worried about. I wish it weren't the case

Ooooh sick, you got it already? Using Game mode or PC+expert 1? :)

Just a heads up. I've definitely play a lot, probably 20 hours over the last 30 something, but I notice Locke's health bar burning into the screen. It wasn't real noticeable, but I caught a little outline on a grey background.

Mine is scheduled to arrive Thursday. I'm definitely worried that might be too much, since I mostly play games. I'll definitely post what I think after I give it a shot.

Worst case, I send it back.

Input lag is the only thing keeping me from getting this TV tomorrow. I play many games that require me to react quickly, and coming from a Plasma screen, there's no doubt I'll really notice it. Hopefully tthey can improve on these things.

Yeah you gotta watch out with that. I don't think i have any yet, but i have been playing Witcher 3 non stop lately and there's plenty of static images in the HUD. Tomorrow i'll check to see if there's any IR. What colour does it clearly show if there's IR?

Mine looked a little darker on a gray image. It was pretty faint. I let Netflix run hoping that helps. Idk what to do for it

So it's been a few hours, and I've been watching Netflix and you can still barely make out the outline of the health bar on a grey screen. I'm a little worried about playing now.

Hmmm...i suggest waiting for an answer here and ask it on AVS too.

I just received a new update for the TV.

It looks like it's gone this morning. I wonder if I need to keep breaking it in. Maybe I'll let it run Netflix for the next two days. I heard contrast plays a role too, so maybe I'll crank that down when I want to play.

Netflix is a good idea. Too bad it doesn't have an option to put a show/movie on loop, that would be great for the night.

New Sony 4K TV no 3D/HDR/wide color gamut but great picture quality, price about 1200 USD.

Apparently only the 55" version has a VA Panel. The european model is called X8005C.

Review www.rtings.com

The Sony X810C is a good gaming TV. As mentioned previously, it doesn't have a lot of motion blur. The input lag is quite good. Also, if you plan on connecting it to a PC, it accepts pretty much any signal you can throw at it.

1080p @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4: Yes
1080p @ 120Hz: Yes
4k @ 30Hz @ 4:4:4: Yes
4k @ 60Hz: Yes
4k @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4: Yes

Input Lag: 35.7 ms

If you are only interested in excellent pure picture quality, and not in fancy features, the Sony X810C is a great choice. It performs very well for all main usages (movies, sports and video games).

Q&A: We are getting ready to purchase our first 4k TV. Currently, we are looking at the Sony X810C. However, seeing multiple reviews, and your in-depth review, we are also considering the M-series Vizio. ( 60", 120hz model). The TV will be for movies, smart apps like UHD Netflix, and sports. We also have a PS4 that we use for Blu-ray and for playing some games. In your opinion, which TV would you lean towards (or possibly another?). We were looking to stick in the $1200-1400 range.

A:Get the Sony X810C. It has less blur on fast movement, so it's a better choice for playing video games, and it's also better at upscaling lower resolutions, which is handy for sports.

Oh NICE, the new update for the EC9300 brought some big changes. If i now press settings on the remote it shows icons on the right of the screen, it's all a whole lot faster now. I just need to find out where i can change the input from PC to HDMI again if i wanted to. That option is not where it should be.

I actually can't seem to find it at all anymore....damn.

I wonder if they've improved input lag overall on the game settings?

Was gonna take a few pics of the new set, but my iphone 6 plus camera seems to have shit the bed? Nothing comes out looking acceptable.

Either way, this 65EF9500 has also proven to me how amazing 3D can look at the home. I've never seen 3D look this good. Incredible clarity, and leagues ahead of the theater experience, screen size not withstanding.

In fairness, your pic wouldn't come close to giving a good idea to that TV's image.

How's gaming on it? Notice any input lag?

So far I've only played AC Syndicate, which is probably not the best test for input lag, but it doesn't feel any more sluggish than my Sony 55w900. I'm sure if I played some destiny I might feel a difference, but for now I have no complaints and couldn't be happier.

Question for Vizio M-series owners... Does the low input lag apply to 4K res only? Do you get the same numbers in 1080p? Also is it possible to convert mini displayport 4k/60hz to HDMI 4k/60hz?

So...how about you try some Destiny? :)

The input lag on it is noticeable if you do not put it in Game mode and rename it PC. If you leave it on ISF you will notice it but it isn't horrible. I noticed it on the SFV beta while in training mode.

Do you guys have the 05.00.15 update? (EC9300)

If you do, have you got any idea how to get to the menu where i can rename/change input icon to PC/HDMI/Game/etc? I can't find it at all.

I am not at home to check, although I am sure that next to the settings there is a display selection, I am sure you can change it in there.

Just pulled the trigger and bought a Sony 75" 940c. It gets delivered and installed on Saturday! I'll post pictures and impression as soon as I can.

Thinking about pulling the trigger on the Vizio M series 55 inch. Love the low input lag but someone told me it is only low on HDMI 5. Anybody who owns one able to comment? Is the input lag worse on the other HDMI ports?

How is the Samsung JS8500 series? I'm looking at upgrading soon and that seems to be the best 4K TV in my price range (under $2000) for a 55". It also supports HDR so it feels pretty future proof outside of not being OLED which I can live with.

Just be careful of the panels native refresh rate. It's only 60hz until you get to the 60" model and larger.

I will mostly be using the TV for PS4 and Wii U games. Am I mistaken in thinking this isn't a big deal as those consoles do not output higher than 60hz?

Thanks for this. So it looks like the other ports are ~40ms lag. I guess that's not awful. Price is a big sticking point for me. Can't really afford to spend more than $900, maybe $1000 on a TV.

Quick question for TVGAF, I am thinking about buying an LG OLED 4k TV sometime in Dec/January time frame, is there any reason for me to hold off from doing so? I know next years models will be better yada yada, but is there any big improvements on the horizon that justifies holding off?(And by horizon I mean in the next six months to 3 years) I am pretty patient, but I do want to TV eventually.
Price isn't the biggest factor, but if prices plummet due to competition or the like, that is also a consideration.

LG ec9300

Couple things... Image retention on the oled goes away once the set is turned off and you dont hear the power click for about a minute. The tv does a screen wipe and gets rid of all image retention. I have played almost nothing but games on mine and the screen wipe clears it everytime!! This screen wipe happens every ten hours of on time, so if you play and get image retention, it eont fully clear until the screen wipe is done. Either way I would NOT worry about burn in, IR may happen and be seen on a grey screen but its not permanent.

Second of all the ABL on the oled, to turn off the abl you need to be in pc mode, I also use game mode ontop of that and put Oled light to 80 and contrast at 59. This turns off the ABL and also reduces the vertical banding , I can no longer see vertical banding which is great!! No ABL for gaming on this oled makes it soo much better!

As for the 5.00.15 firmware update, I checked with my Leo Bodbar and the lowest lag possible is indeed pc mode with game picture mode. Average lag is 29ms, not bad!!

I'd imagine next years might have brighter panels, maybe better motion processing. You might see more brands (Maybe Samsung)

I dont regret buying mine now. The difference is night and day, I'm continuously awed at the picture I'm getting. LCD is a garbage technology I hope I never have to deal with again (outside of my pc monitor...lol).

I figure in another 2-3 years we'll see more OLED options and Ill upgrade again, but I dont think I could have waited. The quality jump is here.

Great advice. I don't think I'm having any AbL problems yet but about IR is great advice. One thing though, with turning off you mean simply pressing the power button on the remote? Not sure what you mean with hearing the power click though....

Another question. When watching movies or shows, what would be the best Trumotion setting? In some shows I can see some slight judder and if Trumotion can combat that, I will enable it. But should I use clear or are there any recommended user settings for it?

Well with LG you have a few things that can happen

They can fix the vignetting completely. It isn't fully resolved but much much better on the EF than on the EG. The good thing is the compensation cycles run every 6 hours on the EF. (This is what Blackvette was describing.) After 6 hours when you turn off the display you do not hear the power click right away. After 10 mins have passed you hear it click. After the first 2-3 cycles vignetting improves and improves over time.

That would be the real only fix that can do outside of just improving uniformity.

Outside of that the only thing that could be added, would be brighter (higher nits) for HDR.

Wider gamut, covering more of DCI/P3

Adding Rec2020

Adding DolbyVision

But if something has dolbyvision it will also have the metadata for HDR10 anyways so you can still have HDR.

That would be the more immediate things that could change.

Once that is all established the only thing left would be a higher bit panel. So I mean...there are always improvements to be made, but for what you can get now with the EF. That's pretty damn close.

IF your horizon is 6 months, the only thing I see possible would be dolby vision and wider gamut..but you said 3 years...so yeah in 3 years time in technology. Yeah lots will change.

Yeah, your timeframe is odd. I can respect waiting 6 months before wanting to drop $5k on a tv. That's a big chunk. But waiting 3 years is a long ass time, especially in the tech space. ESPECIALLY if gaming/TV is a big hobby of yours.

Yeah just press the power button. If you want to see what he means. Turn on your tv. then turn it off. When you turn it off you should hear a click right away. When it does it's compensation cycle and you turn it off it won't click. it takes about 10 mins then you hear the click.

Its 6 hours per cycle. on the EF, and 10 mins the compensation runs.

Thanks for both your perspectives. Would you guys advice waiting until the next line comes out or is it not worth the wait? Or a more precise way to ask this may be, is the dimness of the HDR on the current sets an issue for you guys?

Also, @Dewoh, I guess i meant if there is an improvement ~3 years down the line that is must have, and 3 years if the max time before I jump into OLED, I am definitely planning on getting one sooner unless someone tells me a massive improvement might come out later.

Though price is not a big issue, I don't want to sink 5k into a TV and have it completely outclassed in a year or so. Minor improvements in future TVs sure, but I would want a TV that lasts me a long time at that price preferably without me saying "oh man I should have waited for X or Y its so much better". Thats my only worry.

I havent actually even tried HDR yetm but the TV as a whole is a lot brighter than my previous Sony LED set

The whole dilemma of spending the money and the item being outclassed in a year is all too common though. That's one of those things where its up to how much you want it I think. I bought mine knowing full well I will probably upgrade within 2 to 3 years, so I can tolerate if next years are a lot better. But the fact Im able to watch movies with this level of PQ NOW is something thats fully worth the investment now.

Well there really isn't much available HDR wise. I have some demos clips, and they are amazing. I have no problems with it at all. You can get it on Amazon as well but I really haven't watched it.

I don't give advice on what people should spend their money on. So if you want something buy it. If you have reservations on it. Don't.

With consumer electronics there is ALWAYS going to be something better. If there wasn't they wouldn't be able to sale anything because there would be no reason to get anything new.

If LG doesn't one up their own product, someone else will. It's always like that.

When Panasonic made the VT30, the Sharp Elite came along, after the Sharp Elite came, the VT50 came out, after that the ZT and F8500's came out. So something being outclassed is just what happens. Hell even with Kuros, the newest one was always better then the previous model.

The only thing imho that would be worth waiting for would probably be BFI (black frame insertion) and full coverage of DCI/P3 if I were on the fence, but I personally don't believe full 100% coverage of DCI/P3 will happen this coming year. I would say 2017 at the earliest. BFI could happen though I just don't think it will happen personally. CES is in January so you could wait and see what is announced then.

Plus for me, I upgrade my TV almost once a year. Within a year and a half I have been through a 65X900B, a 65AX800U, and now a 65EF9500. I think I will keep this one for about 2 years though. Let the dust settle and more tech to evolve etc. In the meantime much like Dead I'm going to be enjoying this OLED.
