Destiny will continue to have paid expansions/DLC (Read OP)

Alternately, they announced their plans for the next year and implied strongly, without announcing it a year in advance, that expansions will continue after that year.

Microtransactions alongside expansions is the status quo for Destiny:

End of year expansions.

Stream of events/etc. during the year funded by the cosmetic microtransactions.

Regardless, this thread alone is proof that a substantial chunk of the community took the microtransaciton announcement to mean that paid expansions would be subsidized by the new payment options. They're in no way obligated to comment on rumors/speculation, but an important tool of community management is watching expectations.

This miscommunication simply shouldn't have happened.

I knew the rumor was too good to be true, but I hope that microtransactions act as a subsidy of sorts for paid DLC (i.e., making something like The Dark Below and House of Wolves $10 instead of $20.)
It wasn't a rumor it was unfounded(?) speculation on kotakus part that spurred into imagination thanks to the internet

I am not sure why you're accusing Kotaku of "spreading confusion" when that's exactly what we reported. There will be a paid expansion next fall. They refer to it as "Destiny 2" but it may be called something else to avoid confusion. The big difference is that this year there won't be smaller packs like Dark Below and House of Wolves. If you want to understand why that's the case, please read this story.

If anything, this thread (and that GameSpot article) are spreading even more confusion because Hirshberg's comments are super unclear.

Kotaku's original article even states that the next paid expansion would be Destiny 2 next fall, and the Activision statement doesn't specify that they would be charging for minor expansions (ex. TDB/HoW) going forward or not. Anyone expecting the next full-blown expansion/Destiny 2 next fall to be free is insane and/or never read anything whatsoever beyond the original Kotaku headline.

It becomes a much grayer area if they put out smaller story/quest content that IS paid as Bungie's official statement at the time states:

Our plan is to use these new items to bolster the service provided by our live team for another full year, as they grow and create more robust and engaging events that we’ll announce later this year. It has been, and continues to be, our goal to deliver updates to the game. Going forward, our live team is also looking to grow beyond vital updates and improvements to focus on world events, experiences, and feature requests.

But as of right now this is all kind of nothing as obviously micotransactions and paid DLC expansions were going to co-exist. If they start putting out smaller questlines/content that is paid then yeah let's flip out then, but right now no one has any idea.

Then that's on those people; there was no miscommunication if you actually read Bungie's official statement which went up pretty much right when the original Kotaku article did. I have no idea why or how people would be confused by this short of them just making complete assumptions...which again is on them.

So basically what they used to make people accept micro transactions they've now taken back. Bungie never spoke about it but they were happy to let people believe one thing while it was really the other.

EDIT: or not. or maybe yes. Who the fuck knows? What a confusing thing. I blame Bungie for even calling Dark Below and House of Wolves "expansions" in the first place.

I find no issue with paid DLC like they did before.

My big issue is with the silver micro transactions. They changed game design to incentivize people to buy that, that's my issue.

STOP FUCKING CHANGING GAME DESIGN FOR YOUR SHITTY COIN, CARD PACK, WHATEVER MICRO-TRANSACTION SYSTEM!

They never said free expansions on the level of TDB or HoW, people assumed that. This was always for the smaller, Live Team stuff.

So Bungie just didn't bother to clarify a fairly massive misunderstanding by the community, and instead saved it for an earnings report?

That either speaks to intense incompetence, or outright malice.

If there's one thing I've learned playing Destiny off and on over the last year, it's that Bungie has no fucking clue how to manage a community and communicate with its player base. It's all take, zero give.

Like the man said, "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

The confusion, I think, is the distinction between "DLC" like TDB and HOW and "DLC but bigger???" like TTK. As you say, Hirschberg doesn't specify this at all and now we have no idea what we're getting.

What exactly did the original Kotaku article say?

I certainly didn't come away from it thinking "Oh boy, now all future content in Destiny is going to be absolutely free!"

My impression was that they were going to use microtransaction revenue to get out of their contractual obligation of providing two $20 DLCs every year, so they could spread out major releases and not be in constant crunch-mode.

If 'expansions' refers to Taken King-tier add ons, then this will be fine.

If 'expansions' means we have to buy the Y2 versions of Dark Below and House of Wolves, then this is bullshit.

Well, this is the company that charges a subscription fee to play World of Warcraft, and then requires you to pay even more for expansions after that. It should not be surprising that console players are now getting the double-shit with microtransactions AND DLC.

I think I'm up to a dozen posts or so now stating that Bungie has done a poor job at managing expectations for the the current model and both they and players would benefit from an clear understanding of the scope for the Live team, and the roadmap for Destiny. So needless to say, I agree with you.

That said, this is right in line with the Kotaku article from a month ago. Good to have it confirmed, though.

Kotaku said:
This is all part of a new plan that could start as early as this month, according to two people familiar with Destiny’s development. Rather than sell big expansion packs like they did last year, Bungie is planning on giving out quests and missions for free, sources say. This will likely involve big drops every few months until the fall of 2016 but could also include trickles of smaller stuff throughout the year.

That means the game’s next paid expansion will be Destiny 2 in the fall of 2016, as has been known for a while now. That’ll be $60.

I'll be honest I didn't come away thinking that either but many from reddit came away thinking HoW size content would become free for one reason or another this is just clarification as vague as it is.

Yeah fuck destiny. And Bungie and Activision for that matter Glad I didn't buy into TTK hype.

Franchise could have been special.

I would hope that after the piece we published last month, the community might be inclined to believe a thing or two I report on Destiny.

CABAL THEMED EXPANSION + RAID CONFIRMED

I wish
Bungie (and High Moon) have been working on a new Mars area called "Pyramidion" that has a raid. Unless something changes, I believe we'll see it in the next big expansion, which will be out next fall. Feel free to bookmark this post etc.

This is basically where I'm at. If every content pack was as rich as TTK, few would protest the price paid. But the two smaller content packs were arguably light on content for a somewhat steep price. Assuming that such content could be funded by MTAs isn't too far fetched.

Disappointing. I know Bungie never confirmed it but seeing as that Kotaku article that leaked micro transactions shortly before Activision's announcement mentioned free DLC, I don't think it's too ridiculous to think that people believed it. They should've addressed it at the time if that was the plan rather than letting a lot of people believe it.

But yeah, if they're talking TTK expansions, sure. If they're going to charge us for TDB and HoW 2 I'm not here for it and will stop playing
again

They never said free expansions. You get live team content and that's it. You better still pay up for expansions. Expecting anything else was ridiculous.

It's gonna be a long year if there is no new raid prior to Fall 2016.

The uncertainly of TTK's post launch support has been why I have been waiting on buying it.

So far I feel pretty good holding off and will continue to do so.

I think it's a case of many of the community believing what they wanted to be true more than anything.
i don't even think it was just the destiny community lol

This is my opinion as well, though I'd add that I expect dark below level content to be added for free in the interim. Halloween even was fun, but this game thrives on new things to do.

Since the next expansion is "Destiny 2" or whatever they will call it, they will obviously be paid.

Will the live content ever be on the level of TDB or HoW? Or will it just be stuff like Festival of the Lost?

Activision didn't own Blizzard when World of Warcraft launched with the monthly subscription fee, as well as when the first expansion that did cost money.

Hah, my friend told me he knows a dude that buys literally everything so the dances and shit and the expansion packs.

lol those hooks are in deep. I spent my 400 free silver on my emotes and that was the end of that. Can't imagine buying one, let alone all of them. Tell your friend to keep doing his thing though. I ain't mad at him.

To be clear I'm not actually pointing fingers but a quick look around the Destiny reddit had lots of people confused about the original article on kotaku which is specifically why I mentioned you.

Nope, they didn't.
How did they not? Actual quote:
Destiny is getting microtransactions, sources tell us. Don’t freak out too much, though: We hear this paid DLC will be limited to cosmetic items like emotes and sparrow skins. And the developers at Bungie will be doling out free story content every few months until next fall.

How does that not describe free TDB + HoW equivalent-content?

Bungie referred to both TTK and TDB/HoW as "expansion" content. TDB + HoW was sold as the "Expansion Pass", with TDB being called "Expansion I" and HoW "Expansion II". "Paid expansions" in this PR quote could therefore refer to either of the above types.

This is like a post straight out of 2014 when a lot of people were understandably frustrated and dissapointed by a lot of things in Destiny, and some people were dismissing them, saying it was their own fault for expecting something that matched what Bungie had said earlier.
