Destiny will continue to have paid expansions/DLC (Read OP)

Getting to fall2016 without some really decent content is going to be a hard sell. I'm wrapping up TTK now on all 3 character and if a few time gated lackluster exotics are all the await me going forward I'm not going to be too pleased.

It's another large problem that they have effectively destroyed any desire to play year 1 content again by removing them from the current strike playlist (other than legacy) and having the other 2 raids have no worthwhile drops to anyone above level 36 beyond a item here or there to unlock another mediocre exotic

Yeah I'm a pretty slow player, almost exclusively weekends, and I've managed to level up 3 characters to 280 - 290 light since early October. I've done pretty much everything except the raids. Even at my slow pace there's not enough content to keep me engaged for the next 10 months. Let alone for someone who plays Destiny on a daily basis. Games like this need a constant infusion of new activities and new loot or they'll fade.

The larger issue, though, is the number of unaddressed problems in the current game. For example: the Shadowshot glitch (a Hunter super that can be glitched for infinite uses, for those unfamiliar) was temporarily worked-around by disabling the subclass perk called Quiver. It's been weeks and Quiver is still broken. Furthermore, there have been some bad problems with PvP matchmaking (being matched into games that are completely one-sided, being matched in as the only member of one team vs. 6 people on the other team, etc) that have remained unaddressed since Destiny came out.

i feel like i've learned more about destiny's future from jason, a write at kotaku, than deej, their community manager, while on here

Oh here, as in, on GAF?

If this forum is your only source of Destiny news, then you might have a point as DeeJ doesn't post here. But the OT in the community forum always posts and discusses DeeJ's weekly update posts and often discusses the main talking points on the Destiny subreddit as well.

That's what everyone said after vanilla Destiny. After TTK there are now 25 million players and people are crazy about microtransactions lol

I would argue that 25 million number is bloated as hell. That number is also number of accounts who have played the game.

Not surprised there will continue to be paid expansions. I just hope they aren't overpriced like TDB and HoW.

Destiny 2 in 2016? I thought it was s 10 Year plan? Anyways I am in desperate need of Weapon Parts, and Strikes just aren't cutting it anymore. Bungie needs to fix this!

Yeah, goddamn weapon parts nerf. I'm always out while I have like 1200 armor parts. Maybe some 1:1 exchange? Bungie, plx.

Well disappointing to hear, I hoped this would indeed be the case. However I still have to say I'm happy with the festival event and definitely want to see more of that. If this is true though, I'm not buying microtransactions anymore.

Since the parts nerf, I've limited play. Because the reality of destiny end game is this

Not much end content besides raid and trials, or super Grindy tasks
Not much good loot to chase.

So the only "end game" for me was perfecting and modifying builds. Parts nerf means I can't really do that easily anymore with weapons. Can't infuse or upgrade what I want. Can't test weapons with their core perks that make them specialized.

So for a few days I was just playing strikes and some court, got a bunch of engrams. Upgraded one node on one weapon and that's the only progress I made. Turned it off

I don't know what free stuff they've got planned, but I think there'll be some quests, too -- stuff that's more substantial than Festival of the Lost, but not quite as meaty as House of Wolves. I don't know any of that for sure, though, and I don't know if they're going to add a raid. (It'd sure be nice if they clarified!)

What I do know is that--unless something has changed in the past month, which, sure, anything's possible!--there will be no paid expansions until fall 2016.

Schreier, you are a good man and without you Kotaku would never get a single click from me.

Keep truckin'

This is pretty much what kotaku reported right?

The original contract stated that every year; destiny would have 2 small expansions, and a big expansion("comet")/new game.

But now destiny is gonna have microtransactions & free updates instead of the small expansions (which is good, because Dark Below and House of Wolves were pretty crap)

The big yearly expansions will still come out.

Bungie is on record as specifically stating what the micrograms actions funded. A live team. Before the live team was 4 people. Now it's orders of magnitude larger. It's to drop content until Destiny 2.

Yeah, I have no idea where the claim of miscommunication has come from. You don't need to have been active on Reddit or Twitter to get the information. The weekly update when micro-transactions were launched was very clear. Previously, the Live Team just kept the light ons, and patches were slow to be produced. Now they can be more pro-active, and we've seen this already in the number of updates and hot-fixes that have already hit in year two, let alone the current Festival of the Lost and recent PvP map.

https://www.bungie.net/en/News/News?aid=13672

Our plan is to use these new items to bolster the service provided by our live team for another full year, as they grow and create more robust and engaging events that we’ll announce later this year. It has been, and continues to be, our goal to deliver updates to the game. Going forward, our live team is also looking to grow beyond vital updates and improvements to focus on world events, experiences, and feature requests.

Bungie have never said that the Live Team would be making new strikes or raids or other major content. But that there will drip feed things like events and quests over the next year. New content for the player, but not requiring a full dev team to create.

Right. This is what I had reported.

While of course it's possible that Activision/Bungie decide to charge for those smaller updates rather than release them for free, as far as I know we're not going to see a bigger expansion until next fall. From what I've heard from people there about their tech/content pipeline, it'd be impossible for them to do a substantial DLC pack before then.

Bungie, clarifying anything? Good one. They don't even bother to do that when they're talking about nerfing in-game items that will affect a lot of people (Black Spindle).

They literally told everyone, the day that the Spindle was available, that all spindles would have their attack power reduced, but that you could infuse your spindles into other guns.

Kinda bummed that there isn't gonna be anything substantial until Fall of next year. I dunno if what's there can keep my interest for that long. Events like the Festival of the Lost will have me popping in for a week at a time, maybe, but not much else than that.

I assume he's glad he bailed so he didn't get stuck in a never ending money pit that is Destiny. I like the game, but I've spent over $160 dollars on it. I can't knock someone if they didn't want to do that.

Vs buying a new or used game every 3-4 weeks right? So much more expensive right? 160 for a year of gaming is dirt cheap.

I'm just surprised at how many people were convinced that we were getting free expansions all because they put microtransactions into the game. You should know by now that 95% of these companies are going to squeeze every last dollar out of you that they can manage.

Whatever quests and missions they do toss out for free will probably be pretty lame. Likely just remixed versions of the quests/strikes we've already had.

It's not completely without precedent. Guild Wars 2 did that exact model for 3+ years and added a pretty substantial amount of content in the process.

There should be different words for content like Destiny's and content like guild wars. They aren't even close to the same production values, detail, or gameplay.

I dunno, the bigger parts of GW2's living story could be compared to the contents of Destiny's season pass; some of it was filler, yeah, but there were expanded versions of existing areas with new bosses and activities, which is roughly what I'm expecting from the live team in the coming year.

I don't think that this is the case. They just haven't released anything plans yet. I will eat one thousand crows if bungie doesn't release some kind of dlc until fall.

Come on, how much you of one game can you play a year, seriously? even a casual would be bored to tears of just one game for a whole year, especially with the limited shit you can do.

I'm glad I didn't bother with Ttk, insane price for an expansion, the best thing about the game was the raid, paying 40£ for one raid is just insanity, when other games offer decent dlc or expansions (see throne of Bhall) at a reasonably price.

They overcharged for the first dlcs which were mediocre at best and then decides to double that price for Ttk. I hear Ttk is great and maybe I would have if was cheaper but no fuck that shit. It's cheaper to buy Ttk with the base game with tdb and how than just the Ttk dlc. Now with MT bollocks, won't be long until they start selling weapons etc.

Will wait for destiny 2 one year after its launch before I buy into this franchise again.

LOL

can't blame them, looking at TTK success they would be stupid to do otherwise.

I'll stick to Warframe, free new raid on december (already released on PC). DE updates the game with new content for free, there's no reason why Destiny can't except Activision is greedy as fuck.

That's cool and all but it doesn't really help the players who don't enjoy the game's PVP.

You're moving the goal posts. It doesn't matter if you like PvP. In the 3 weeks since micro-transactions were introduced, we've had this provided for free to all players:

* Cathedral of Dusk PvP map
* Festival of the Lost and associated new items and questlines

So entirely new PvP and PvE content has been released, for free, to everyone, paid for my folks spending their own cash of Silver to buy emotes. The system works.

basically nothing for a year? seems like theyd want something beyond cosmetic, microtrans bs, for each fiscal quarter
Do HoW and Dark Below constitute "substantial DLC"?

[wishful thinking]

Oh I'm expecting some form of DLC, I'm just worried that it being relegated to maybe a couple of quests/a new strike won't keep me engaged with it until Destiny 2 drops.

If 'expansions' refers to Taken King-tier add ons, then this will be fine.

If 'expansions' means we have to buy the Y2 versions of Dark Below and House of Wolves, then this is bullshit.

Came in to post this. If it's anything like the Taken King, shut up and take my money.

I would hope that after the piece we published last month, the community might be inclined to believe a thing or two I report on Destiny.

Bungie (and High Moon) have been working on a new Mars area called "Pyramidion" that has a raid. Unless something changes, I believe we'll see it in the next big expansion, which will be out next fall. Feel free to bookmark this post etc.

So would you say Destiny 2 isnt coming next year but will instead be an expansion For D1 instead?

So Destiny 2 next year? Are sequels expansions or is that people thinking that a sequel is an expansion?

Possible PSX reveal in December?

Do you genuinely believe Bungie hasn't been working on those since before the introduction of silver?

I'm pretty sure we're going to be seeing two more paid expansions in the next 12 months a la TDB and HoW. This misunderstanding also seemed like a misconception to me - they said the MTs were for the live team and everyone seemed to assume that covered these two DLCs which were in that leased image. The clarification now seems to be clearing the decks for the announcement of the next DLC surely?

Oh.

Well, uh, this is exactly what I thought was going to happen. I wonder what changed to give us a new thread?

I´m pretty sure we wont.

According to Kotaku we´ll have yearly "big" releases now.

New game every two years + TTK sized expansion in between.

There was no new pve content. Just killing stuff in old content.
