GAF, how much do you make?

Let's just say that you are getting a tax cut under Trudeau's new plan, so your "I am okay with the 1% being taxed as I am one of them so no hypocrisy here" isn't genuine anymore. Not that there is anything wrong (or right) with the new tax plan, but like most Canadians, you aren't affected so it is easy for you to justify it.

Huh? When did I ever say that? You may have me confused with someone else.

I said I would be happy to be taxed more. I've said those that were conservatives are selfish.

$60k, in Puerto Rico. Living costs are a bit high and salaries are way lower than mainland USA. I can add my profit from my software business but that's so variable I am not even gonna estimate. Still, I am better off than most people here in the island.

Moving to mainland USA, probably Florida as I got a nice 95K offer out there, for next year. My SO is an internal auditor and we are probably moving in together next year if all goes well and I make the move to Florida so I can probably add 60-70K to that income right there.

I am only 26 and want more though:P

27, Part Time Town Worker, 23k. In other words a failure, I've been attempting to find another job for the last year. Must have sent out 1000 resumes without a single callback. Hell, I'm excited when they tell me no at this point instead of ignoring my existence. So happy I went to college.

I should mention I live on Long Island, NY. My rent + utilities is around 900-1000 a month.

What do you consider rich? Dollar amount?

Some people live in places where rent/mortgages can be over 2-3k a month, so making 80K there might be the equivalent of making 40-50k elsewhere, as far as additional spending money.

making 105k dollar at the age 23 is rich to me.

Living outside NY and san francisco with that salary = rich

oh and I get it, if he lives in like Geneva, then thats a whole different story. Thats why people should also post their city

If I were you, I'd try to get any new skills to put on the resume, learn to code maybe? what is your major?

I'm a 31 year old attorney who runs his own firm (started two years ago). As the owner of a small business with one employee, my "salary" isn't fixed. However, I guess the best way to express it would be to say what my yearly net income (i.e. before taxes) is. Last year, it was $106,800. This year, I'm at $111,526 from Jan. 1 through Oct. 31, so it's looking to be a slight improvement.
That would be your gross income :) net income is after taxes (take home).

Mortgage Underwriter - 63k - 30, 31 this month. Had a goal to be at 100k by 32 but I've been irresponsible with how I live, hoping to get on track. Being divorced w 2 kids is tough, child support alone is $970/month

27. Work part time in a hospital making close to $15/hr but not enough hours. Not sure what I'll make this year, as it's been a consistent change and shift change and all sorts of things.

Trying to move up in the hospital, but that's going nowhere. Just applied to a good handful of jobs in the area. Used to be an office manager, but I had to quit because of how awful it was to work there - so it's been an interesting last year for me.

I'm 24 and have been doing the same "temporary" job for 4 years now. I'm an Avid Tutor. On average I make like $300 a month, maybe a tad more now since its 12 hours a week instead of 9 like it was the last 3 years. I live with my parents and that money simply does not last :|

Going paycheck to paycheck on both necessary and frivolous expenses. Of course, it doesn't help that there is no consistency with pay cycles and what not (curse you, holidays!).

New York, $100,000, User Experience Designer. Satisfying, yet really hard, work.

The money doesn't go nearly as far as some might think.

I'm 31, I make about 70,000$ annually, before tax that is, I think I pay about 22-25,000$ in taxes every year.

28 years old, £30k a year with bonuses around between £1k- £3k at the end of each year depending on how much profit the company made on the projects I managed. It's comfortable but I wouldn't call myself 'rich'. Wales, UK.

About 40k, I'm 27. Work in vidja games. For a long time I made around 30k, that extra 10 removes a lot of stress. Went from QA at a shit rate, to QA at a better rate, to design at a slightly better rate.

I live near Vancouver, so this is basically shitty-rental-take-the-bus money. I mean, I have a used car I share with my girlfriend but if I was single I wouldn't own one.

Seriously? I've never told anyone in real life what I would make and I would never ask someone their salary. It can lead to a lot of complications and resentment from either party.

It shouldn't be, in that employers have an easier time not paying people what they're worth if they don't know what everyone else is making.

I agree with you, though, that it leads to a lot of acrimony and false equivalencies. There are tradeoffs to transparency, always.

High five I'm in suffolk county, but I work in the city. As much as it sucks you may have to try looking for stuff in the city at some point. I used to work on the island in QA but got laid off in 2010. After a year of searching for something close to home, I finally just started looking in the city and found a job pretty quickly. Commute sucks but I have a much better job than I ever had.

Eh, fine. I'll be interested to see how this gets used to invalidate my arguements.

Sales. I live in Vancouver. I'm just over 30. Income is $90k base salary + commission in my role. My commission has ranged from $50k to $100k+ on top of base.

I'm hoping to change this up soon though. I have a startup idea (well multiple ideas into a B2B SaaS solution) that I have been working on over the last 6 months. I had taken a break from work for a while to work on it. Feasibility & market analysis, costing plan, use cases, ui design, prototyping, etc complete. Business plan is pending a lot of things but the initial framework is done. I'm in the coding stage for pre-alpha, which is exhaustingly boring and takes a while (often why you'll see me on GAF up at 2am). I am trying to see if I can go the organic growth route instead of VC investment so it'll be a slow burn over the next 6-12 months before even considering go to market. Right now just side project as I cannot afford anymore to work on the startup idea only, and it's a long one as it's not a simple app.

So we'll see how it is in 12-24 months when I may commit fully to the startup and may be broke.

Very blessed though I'm working towards more because there's things I'd like to do for myself and I need to do for others that requires a lot more income. Eventually I'd like to be at a place where I'm not worried about money though I'm not sure anymore that that's completely possible.

I'd never tell a friend especially. People just don't need to know this stuff.

One party always ends up jealous of the other and can resent them because of it.

snip.
It shouldn't invalidate your arguments. I retired at 34 and before I retired, I was a nurse practitioner making $107k in Orlando, FL. I have no student loans because of the GI Bill and my house is paid off.

And yet I'm part of the extreme left who believes in basic income for everyone. Your life comes down to luck as much as "hard work" in my opinion.

Confused, why would an average salary invalidate your arguments? What arguments?

30, $75,000 / year , network administrator.

IT consultant. 30 years old and I make over 6 figures. and I work from home.

To all the younger IT people out there, I was there making what you're making. If you want to make more get deeper knowledge in 1 to 3 more specialized technologies. Best thing I ever did.

I'm intrigued.

What's the startup idea?

Considering the average US household income for 205 was $53,657 (and that's household not individual) it's safe to assume that the only thing more exaggerated on GAF than income is dick size.

ooor it could be that GAF is not a good representation of the general public.
One could generalize that since GAF is a gaming forum, we have smarter people than the general public. Gaming, stereotypically is associated with nerds/geeks. Nerds and geeks often go into things like engineering, mathematical fields, computer science etc. Its not that hard to make some assumptions about this place.

Also as others have pointed out, making 100k in san fran or NYC is vastly different than making 100k in the Midwest.

If someone doesn't believe me when I say what I make i'll post my pay stub.

~22k a year, part time.
... It's not gonna last. It's a killing for Italy.

There's multiple biases at work:
- People comfortable with posting their income are likely very satisfied with it
- Basically half of those who're posting there are into IT, which pays fairly above average, and\or in a tech metropolis
- Everything gets rounded up when you're bragging
and so on.

In 30s, corporate lawyer, NYC, and let's just say enough money to buy all the emotes in Destiny.

It's also a forum that scews young, and young people tend to earn a lot less than older people.

But everyone carry on with the "I earn $152,000 a year at my regular job, but I also earn about $40,000 on a side job I do about 5 hours a week. I'm still struggling".

There are a lot more posters with lower than average incomes than there are posters listing off incomes which cause people to consider them as being "rich."
