I used to make about $65,000 a year working in the high-end clothing business, but in NYC that really isn't very much.

Wasn't happy with my career so now I'm in school, and my income is.... well about $5k from grants and education-based tax returns, plus whatever help my (thankfully willing) family can afford to throw me every now and then.

Yeah, I used to commute. Four years ago I moved and now I'm about 70 yards from work. Drive like 10 miles a month. It's amazing.

Save a ton on gas and car maintenance.

everyone else is fussing over the big ones, I want to poke at yours a bit more.

assuming 9 hours a day 5 days a week that is 40 hours of normal pay and 5 hours of overtime. assume time and a half 47.5 hours a week. or puts your job at merely 7.69 an hour.

I'm not sure where you work but that seems really low as if we do the upper end of what you said 12 hours a day 6 days a week. that is 40 hours of normal pay 32 hours of over time or effectively 88 hours a week or you would be making 4.15 an hour.

as for me I work part time at a charity/thrift store at $11 an hour thus i make about 16k per year before taxes, but supplements my wife's income way better than that since we haven't had to buy furniture, clearing supplies, clothes and various other things you can find at a thrift store out side of my store at a tiny fraction of store prices thus the value of my income is closer to 25-30k due to all the perks (christmas is nice for my family anymore )

I could make more easily, but prefer to have more free time to attempt to learn Japanese, attempt to learn programming, slowly write a novel, and write some music. at some point I will have to start showing off those to people if i ever want to make money from them oh and I am like 29 i think.

Started an eCommerce development company 16 years ago, I'm turning 40 next year and make in the range of AUD$100K-$135K per year as it fluctuates. 3 year plan to push over $150K-$175K, we'll see how that goes.

Misses makes around $35K so we're comfortable but not mega rich as Australia is expensive to live in. We're knocking our house down next year to build a new one and looking for an investment property as well. Currently own about 60% of our house mortgage too, fun times.

Also kids are expensive little buggers, lucky we love em.

It's minimum wage in France but that's what MANY people around me make. The ones who earn more make only double of that (except doctors etc...) which is far from the 70k or 100k that are thrown in this thread.

I don't understand why there is so much income disparity with the US or uk...

Im guessing you live in the country and not near a city, as France is expensive as hell, especially the housing market.

In Dallas our morgage on a 300k house cost us a little less than 2k, we have auto loans, some students loans, and other things that cut into our income. While together we make over tripple digits, it never really feels like it.

Long Island so the cost of living is indeed quite high (highest in the county I think?). I have friends who've just graduated with engineering degrees making only 10k or so more than I am so I think it's still quite high in comparison.

You're right, but in computer related subjects you can make that much without a degree (as I did). I doubt you'd even have an easy time getting a job as a civil engineer or something without a degree.

I live in a small city, in the South of France. It is a lot cheaper than Paris but still reputed to be expensive as far as housing is concerned, mainly because it's a "student city" and one of the very few attractive cities of the south, even though there are no jobs.

We rent a one bedroom apartment with large balcony and garage and pay 670€ a month. I think it's not that expensive. In Paris it would cost double of that I guess, but the wages are barely higher.

My gf earns the same salary as me and we make ends meet but still... Looking at this thread, I should get into programing...
