Fallout 4 - Reviews thread

Hearing about the radiation storms and dynamic weather reminds me of STALKER: Call of Pripyat and its emission storms and those were immersive as hell, I'm sure it's going to be the same here. So damn excited.

Good to see an outlet not afraid to call out the graphics. It really is stunning that after all these years Fallout 4 doesn't look like a huge step up.
One of the things I love about Ars Technica. Generally, they don't sugar coat things.

Compare it to 3 and it is a huge step. Maybe no huge enough, but people claiming it looks like 3 are crazy.

Isn't FO3 still quite expensive? I was going to buy that as I'd never played a fallout game before, but the price put me off. A cheaper FO3 might have warmed me up for FO4

Fallout games are on steam sales quite often so I'd wait for that.

edit: then again the GOTY edition seems to be only 20€ anyway. Same for New Vegas GOTY.

Huh, that Destructoid review is actually pretty well written.

Shame that the gunplay is still the same.

I didn't massively rate Chris Carter when he got the reviews editor gig after Jim left DToid, but he's come along in massive strides since then. One of my go to people.

The entire interesting and indepth dialogue system has been compeltely gutted and replaced with voice acting, giving you 4 super basic dialogue options to choose from that are worse than Mass Effect levels of vagueness.

Oh, well that is disappointing. Hopefully it turns up today so i can see what they've done. That's one of the things i loved about those games.

They also mention dozens of bugs, like disappearing menus, laggy dialogue, graphical glitches, crashes and wrote an additional 2 pages long article about the menus and controls beeing fuckin awful.

87/100.

Because all of that is chickenshit compared to the great sense of adventure and atmosphere, which is why people play the game.

Remember how unbelievably buggy Morrowind was when it came out? Sometimes people are willing to look beyond technical issues because beneath it all lies a game that is a lot of fun.

It is actually kinda sad that people are trying to see some kind of grand conspiracy with the review scores or people are shocked that some people are able to overlook technical flaws when the overall package is great.

I expect I'll probably love this like I loved the other Fallout games which had their issues too.

I haven't been so indecisive on a game in a long time. Not that I don't appreciate the reviews, but more about having the time to play a game this gigantic.
Exactly where im at, still got W3 to finish and keep revisiting MGS, not sure if can do another open world game right now..aghh..i dunno...may get TR for a change of pace.

Jim's review is working again, and it's a great. There is a cool little companion detail that surprised me:
while it may be a case of Bethesda going, eh, do whatever you want - polyamorous relationships! That's really cool!

re: RPS' review, it's great that side-quests seem to be tying well into the main quests, plus quests possibly tying in/opening up after the main quests ends. Variety in voice actors with NPCs is the best news I've heard with the entire bloody game!

Honestly some of the stuff in their PS3 games are pretty fuckin questionable for the scores. I know it probably isn't nearly as bad on the new consoles but still, buyer beware.

Or maybe, just maybe it is that good.

did you even read any reviews..? most (if not all) talk about the glitches, performance issues and the not so impressive graphics..

What if we somehow made Bethesda aware of this..? instead of just giving them good scores..

That's cool, the problem is these exceptions only seem to exist for mostly bethsoft games. Other companies don't have that luxury.

Pretty much.
I probably will not get over the technical issues and wait for the GOTY edition next summer. Still need to play 3 and Vegas, so no rush.

Looks like it runs pretty well with very few dips below 60 fps on the PC based off the PC gamer review. Can't wait to play this.

I have learned my lesson with these types of games. I will be buying until late December once some patches have been released.

Scores look pretty solid. Glad to hear that shooting seems generally improved, and expectedly down on the dialogue changes.

Have we gotten to 'objective review' complaints yet? Still catching up on the thread.

What is, their graphics? Nope.
Animation? Nope
Has lower than avg # of bugs ? Nope, it has been consistently high for decades.
Story and characters? Ha.
Well if you choose bad things about a game it will always feel as a bad one.
The game as a whole is reviewed and fallout games go further that the things you mentioned.

If you've played it, and this is your assessment, fair enough.

If you haven't, and you're just assuming all this because you don't like Bethesda games because of their admittedly frequent issues, then I'm not sure why you would be following Fallout 4 anyways.

Some people like what they offer, warts and all.
