Sources close to the negotiations have confirmed to me that Creed and Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler is in talks to direct Marvel's Black Panther.

This is a huge step for Marvel, who wants someone with talent but also with legitimacy, and does Coogler ever have both. He's a great filmmaker and he's a filmmaker who knows how to meld entertainment with real art.

More than that, he was able to work with Sylvester Stallone on a movie featuring Sly's most iconic character and still make it his own. Coogler knew how to hit the beats we want from a Rocky movie while making it fresh and exciting. These skills - handling opinions and finding new angles on well-worn stories - would serve him well on Black Panther

For the record, this is from the same guy that revealed Doomsday is the main baddie of Batman v Superman like a year ago.

He did an indie, and a blockbuster, so I hope he does another indie and not some comic book thing; since he's 2/2, he seems better than that.

Dare I hope? It's still not fully settled as reality that BP is being done at all, and I have an excellent shot at seeing it within my lifetime.

Cool pick but I'd much rather prefer Coogler not wastes his time being involved in superhero films, particularly under Marvel.

I'm with you in the sense that Marvel might want to reign people in and limit a personal vision for the film, but this kind of opportunity is not a waste of time for Coogler, not in the slightest. It can only lead to more opportunities, unless it somehow makes no noise whatsoever.

I would actually love his take on Cyborg. DC is more open to directors putting their own sting on projects.

Creed has proven Coolger can do amazing stuff with an established franchise film though, so there's that.

I always thought he'd be an interesting choice:

An interesting choice for director would be Ryan Coogler

My dream choice would be Cary Fukanaga.

I wish Fukanaga wasn't so turned off of Hollywood, because he'd be an excellent choice for a comic book movie of some sort.

I'd assume that WB's got him locked up long term for Creed sequels or DC stuff if he wants it.

Also, if this gets in the way of Creed sequels, I will hit Marvel with a right cross.

They'll hire him, let him and the people around him do the brunt of the creative work then fire him due to "creative differences" alter the script as they please and ship.

I forgot Creed was distributed by WB.

They'll probably want to lock him down for a DC film.

He would've done good with Doctor Strange.

Or Moon Knight.

But, until Marvel decides to fuck with their formula, I doubt artists like Fukunaga are going to be interested in working with them. DC could benefit from his by snatching up all the talent in the meanwhile if they're smart.

Fukunaga could do dope stuff with like Sandman.

Fukunaga directing a vertigo movie would be tops, too. I think he'd do a great Swamp Thing.

Keep the good ones away from the comic book films please, they shouldn't be the ultimate destination of all promising talent.
