Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

My hype went from 11 to 0. I've played through VII about 20 times from beginning to end. And I am surely overreacting. I must be...

But seriously, what worries me the most is how they are going to tackle the freedom of the game. Once you were out of midgar, or once you got Tony Bronco and Highwind you could explore, go to a dozen places, find places like Wutai, grab Vincent to your party.

How are they going to offer all this in episodes? There's no way how!!!
This structure may well be very limiting in terms of scope.
Dude... Not like this.
They could still make a bigger explorable areas for each part that has all kinds of nooks & crannies with secrets to be found. Optional stuff like Vincent could still be something that you have to search for in a bigger overworld area and offer rewarding exploration that way. It really all depends what this being released in parts means. "Episodic" or being released in parts doesn't have to mean that each of those parts is some super-cramped 5 hour experience with no room for deviation. Maybe they are just planning to expand FFVII into a trilogy of games where each game's scope is like one Mass Effect or something.

I am really conflicted on this.

There are people I know that didn't play FF7 yet but wanted to but heard about this and decided to wait on it.

Before people leap to conclusions about what this could entail for the pricing structure, remember that we already know of an upcoming Square-Enix game with an episodic release method - Hitman - and that's $60 for everything as it releases.

Oh wow look exactly what a few of us said. They're fleshing out the game with more side/tangentially related content so they feel like full games.

Rabble rabble rabble.

That doesn't put me at ease at fucking all. It's one reporter versus Squares own press release. Again, this:
with each entry providing its own unique experience.

is the part that scares the shit out of me. It sounds like even once this game is released it won't be one coherent game.

Typical internet reaction, blow a gasket before details. Can't just be curious gotta be pissy too.

It tends to happen when you're playing with nostalgia. Had Square made the announcement that FFXV would be episodic, I imagine people would've been more receptive and considered the many different ways that could manifest.

Instead, they're changing a game many people already love - and just want as-is, updated to modern graphics. So the reaction is naturally going to be vitriolic, as people already love FFVII - and are now convinced this project won't be the same.

Outside of Telltale games does the episodic format ever work for games?

I'd have taken the game coming out later over having it distributed in episodes, easily.

Starcraft 2 did it well enough. Half-Life also did okay with it up until the point where they stopped releasing fucking episodes after a major cliffhanger.

The backlash here is more than enough for them to reconsider. It's kind of a deal breaker.

You're acting as if they had no idea that anyone would have a problem with it. They knew the decision would be unpopular, that's why they dropped the news tonight instead of at the conference. They're going to do it anyway because they don't think it's going to piss off enough people to the point of them not buying it to impact sales that much, and they're probably right.

The World Map shouldn't be an issue. Can't you just visualize the world map and do fast travel?

Even that shouldn't be necessary. They could recreate the overworld from the original at the same scale and no one would care. Come on Square.

Yeah I don't understand that either. It was three separate discs with different content installed on each one the first time around. It could work the same way with different episodes using the same save.
Don't you see that the whole reason they're going for episodes is because they can only complete small chunks of the game at a time. It means no overworld, hence no backtracking.

hmmm...can't say that I mind this one bit. You guys can patiently wait for all episodes to finish and play the complete game, or your an buy it episode by episode. Life is Strange followed a similar pattern i believe, and turned out rather fantastic.

And if each edition doesn't sell, the chance of the next not being made is a real possibility. Crazy hahaha

unless the first part doesn't sell at all, i think they'll make everything. that way they can port it to ps5 and xb4 and nx version 2 and whatever else is going to be there in the future. this is almost like a kickstarter for the project, except you'll get part one right away, and maybe a limited edition too.

Remember how EPIC and HUGE the world of Final Fantasy 7 was when you first left Midgar? Remember how majestic it was to explore that world map for the first time and discover what the entire WORLD of Final Fantasy was outside of that worn down, industrial, steampunk city? It was MAGICAL.

I doubt this remake will even have a world map. They're going to filter you from one set piece location to the other. We'll get that familiar story. We'll get to see those characters lovingly rendered with modern graphics. But that sprawling epic sense of exploration that we all got when we played FF7 all those years ago is going to be GONE! Mark my words. This game is going to be on rails and soulless.

Overreacting? Maybe. I personally don't have any huge investment in a remake of FF7. The original captured a very specific point in my life. I was a teenager and my love affair with JRPGs was in its adolescence as well. Final Fantasy 7 ushered my relationship with them from puppy love and admiration to a full blown love affair, and I'll always love it for that. But I don't think a remake ever had a chance to recapture those emotions. Now I know for certain that it won't. The FF7 remake will not capture a moment in time. It will be a cheapened, soulless nostalgia play from a company that is aching for my money, and I'm not falling for it.

That's just the cost of high-fidelity HD graphics where you have to animate every single blink of an eye and render beads of sweat running down Cloud's pristine cheeks

I still will buy everything from this remake. I dont care. It just means we get it into our hands quicker. I hope they release the other parts rather quick. Or they can have a UHD PS5 collector edition.

No way is Vincent and Yuffie optional. They will definitely be a mandatory part of the cast.

I'm guessing we will still have the base game but they'll include side stories/DLC or other remakes like:

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Remake
Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII Remake
Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII Remake
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Remake (playable)

or even

Episode Vincent DLC
Episode Yuffie DLC
Episode Nibelheim DLC

Since 70-80% will use almost use the same assets.

We don't need details. An episodic structure, by its very nature, cannot offer the same level and freedom of roleplaying gameplay as an open world RPG. It forces players to experience a narrative in a linear fashion, much like a TV series. It works great with story-based games but FF7 is not just a story.

You don't even know where the episode boundaries are, so yes you do need more detail. F this negativity about snippets of information.

You are literally making up a narrative in your head and then get pissed at it.

Its just a joke that comes from my extreme cynicism and im not angry at all, bah im bad at making jokes.

Nah it's just that people are legit losing their mind in post form.

Like legit breathe you post. I can 100% see someone upset at this or whatever, but talking about how your chest is hurting or your boner is killed in all caps across multiple posts is just asinine.

Also, say this is episodic and is set across the three discs, which may not even be the case if the WSJ post is to be believed, y'all are totally going to buy it anyways.

It's going to be a L4D2/MW2/BO petition thing all over again.

Square Enix had one job to do. One job. Remake Final Fantasy 7. In order to deal with development costs, they probably could have done either of the following and I would have been way more than satisfied:

1. Charged me $100 for the final game and released it in 2019.
2. Charged me $60 for the game and had DLC micro transactions, and maybe some other revenue stream that made sense within a full, complete holistic product in 2019.

Or, they could have:

3. Split the game into multiple games and forced consumers to buy them over an extended period of time, clearly making a money grab like Starcraft 2 and completely shitting over the holistic complete package that was the original game, creating a schism in its story, in my enjoyment of the product, and maybe even in the gameplay or the quality of the final product (since multiple directors / employees will probably be working on different parts), making me loathe myself for getting excited.

It appears they chose 3.

I'm not paying for episodes. I want a complete package on a disc...so it looks like I will not be playing this until 2020.

hmmm...can't say that I mind this one bit. You guys can patiently wait for all episodes to finish and play the complete game, or your an buy it episode by episode. Life is Strange followed a similar pattern i believe, and turned out rather fantastic.

I don't think people care about the wait, it's what it will do to the game design and for me personally lessening the artistic value of this game.

Some of you are such whiny asses, it's god damn annoying. Episodic storytelling is not inherently bad, so stop treating this announcement as if the well-awaited remake is already doomed. Wait until the fucking game is out. Or at least until several months before release to get an idea of how the game is shaping up.

Fucking hell.

The dream has come and gone already. That was fast.

Episodic distribution on a game of the size of FF7 is gonna be a disaster.

This makes a whole lot of sense. All along they've said one of the reasons they were against remaking it was the sheer amount of time and cost it would take to remake VII. Y'all have no idea how much it would cost to make an entire game of the scale of VII in the fidelity we saw in that trailer, especially if they want to keep the game world intact AND develop a new battle system to go along with it.

Releasing it episodically allows them to ensure it's released this generation and they can better optimise dev time while getting back some of the colossal cost of development. And yeah, they probably get to charge a bit extra for it too.

Realistically it's probably the only way this thing gets made. Hoping for few (if any) compromises to game flow, but have to be realistic. Some of the things we loved from VII doesn't make sense to include now.

I'm cautiously optimistic, honestly.

Ya why not just go all the way and let Telltale make it? /s

Seriously though, the game looked great and Id be happy with those graphics. But it wasnt anywhere near the best we've seen this gen. If money is an issue, scrap 15 and make 7 right lol.

Lol why are people sayings its basically like disk 1 2 and 3? When I bought ff7 all 3 discs came with my initial purchase and I didn't have to wait a period of time for my next disc to arrive. Honestly though I expected this and I think a lot of people are mad mostly because they actually trusted square enix not to fuck this up. And well should only be blaming themselves for believing in their hyped up expectations.

People need to remember, the way current HD development goes, visuals and effects take much, MUCH longer than the simple 3D rendering of the original.

There is SO much content in the original game. Something this size could literally take 6 to 8 years of development time if done right. That is the cost of the massive amount of details these kinds of games have in them.

This isn't some bi yearly COD formulaic game being made. This is one of the grandest scale Final Fantasy games ever made. Expecting the entire thing done well while keeping the finer details intact is going to need some serious development time.

People need to chill.

I think a series of loosely connected vignettes is pretty uninteresting to me.

This is true for me too. The shit I enjoyed doing in FF7 had fuck all to do with the main storyline. Getting the highest scores possible in the gold saucer mini games, breeding chocobos, getting that materia that allowed you to convert enemies directly into items on kill, buying the beach house at Costa del Sol, creating master materia of all types for every one of my party members, playing the piano in nibelheim to get tifa's lvl4 limit, getting that sinking feeling in your gut when you meet the folks in gonaganga which is pretty much optional.

EP 01 - mako bombing mission - release date: December 2016
EP 02 - the 7th heaven - release date : January 2017
EP 03 - Aerith & The Turks - release date : February 2017
and so on because I'm too lazy to type everything.

Hmmm....so how many episodes would there be? The whole Midgar section is kind of long so it could be split across 2 episodes, I dunno.

Outside of Telltale games does the episodic format ever work for games?

I'd have taken the game coming out later over having it distributed in episodes, easily.

Worked for Reesident Evil Revelations 2, but that's because it was a way smaller scale game on a tight budget in a set of RE games already structured like an episodic game.
