Things that 'Should' be the Standard in 2016. Besides 1080p/60fps.

An option for big text in console games

Yes. So much yes for this. I´ve been playing a few games lately that when the subtitles first showed up I thought it might be either a bug or that there would be an option for me to change its size. Text was ridiculously small on a 46" TV let alone on smaller monitor.

Completely customisable HUD/UI like FF14 and Sound options which let me put down/up the volume of the voices and music.

So much this. Halo MCC pisses me off no end with this. Can't hear the voices over the music at all. Even on a calibrated full 5.1 system.

HUD options and audio volume options. Ingame music should be a seperate option from game effects and player mic/voice. As other people noted, the HALO series was always a bad example where the music was too loud sometimes and drowned everything else.

What also would be cool is universal controller support, I can see why console manufacturer don't want this but it would be cool on pc, when I play Dirt Rally with G27 wheel then I can't change to my Xbox 360 or WiiU Pro controller on the fly.... but I wan't to ... I just want that ok!

Demos.

It's stupid we've regressed on that front.

That's a good one. There's so many games where I need a feeling, and where watching gameplay on YouTube wouldn't do the trick. Also, I'd use a lot of demo's to see how well a certain game runs on my PC (unless a demo isn't representative of the final performance).

On the other hand, we can use the Steam refund as a "demo", but I don't know if it's labelled "misuse" of the service. I'd rather not risk it.

- Full button remapping
- FOV sliders

FoV sliders are still missing in a lot of first person games. Just retarded.

Then there should be demo's again so you can actually try something before you buy.

No more slow online stores, even when YOU have fast/good/stable internet.
So many people want or talk about online only games, consoles, while they will never be able to get their servers working at launch day to full capacity. Which is exactly why we should not want that shit, ever. It's way too unreliable.

Dedicated servers, both from the studio/publisher and external server hosting. Just like in the older days this was easily done, so there's no reason why you can't do that now. And don't stop progression because of that....

Color blind modes are also missing in most games. I don't have to deal with this myself luckily, but I can understand this can be very frustrating for others.

Don't up the price for games while they are still on the same blu-ray disc as before. They still make the same game every year, so saying it's more work is no excuse either.

This is all I could think of for now.

Killcams in multiplayer games.

It's pretty annoying being killed and having no idea who killed you, where from or how.

Patch Notes

I imagine some QA person needs to take time out from their schedule to write up something that perhaps 10% of players will ever care to read through, but I know the PS4 and Steam both HAVE a section DEDICATED to adding actual patch notes and like a tiny sliver of developers actually utilize it. It's maddening. Perhaps some people worry if they highlight what they fixed, people will simply bombard them even more with the issues they didn't fix with the latest patch, but it's still insane to me.

Fullscreen/window mode options in PC games, as well as sound options (I know Vista onward you could mess with individual app audio using the OS, but c'mon) in-game.

arbitrary framerate/resolution options for PC as mentioned previously, and FOV sliders for FPS games at the very least.

Ability to turn off chromatic aberration even on console games- It's such an eyesore to me

Offline bot mode in shooters *stares at battlefront*

Don't split up userbase with season passes/paid dlc *stares at battlefront again*
(I really enjoy battlefront and bought the season pass day 1 but those 2 are issues that I have with games in general)

Not require an always online connection if your game is singleplayer (I heard lightning returns pc port does this?)

Borderless windowed mode support

  • Displays that can handle multiple resolutions without destroying the image quality.
  • FOV sliders
  • No mouse acceleration/smoothing. Or at least turned off as default.
  • Consintent framerate. Massive frame drop just because you're starring at some building... cmon it's 2016
  • Seperate GUI for different platforms. Or even better. Choice of GUI style. PC style with heavy mouse usage. And console one with gamepad support.

Cross platform multiplayer.

Dedicated servers, otherwise free multiplayer for peer to peer hosted games. The hosting of master servers or a matchmaking server by devs should not result in gamers incurring fees.

In-game language selection for audio and subtitles.
Customizable audio settings like in Naughty Dog games.
Pausing during cutscenes.
Interactive loading screens instead of pure waiting.
In case of rendered cutscenes, let them be high bitrate without any compression artifacts as well as the same framerate as the game itself.

That's all I can think of for now.

- No out of the game menus.
- First launch of the game must start at native screen resolution and refreshrate.
- If you put videos or logos in the game start, do them skipable.
- If you are loading assets during one video and player want to skip it, show him a message for a second (loading...)
- Unlocked screen resolution in video options.
- Unlocked framerate. You can add caps as options. Never mandatory.
- If you load assets during gameplay, streaming must be absolutely async with the renderer.
- Regular frametimes. The most important thing in gaming must be smooth framerate. 59 fps in 60 hz is not acceptable.
- Is never a possibility your game stutters. If there is no available memory, don't load whatever you need. Black Ops 3 is doing it right in my 2gb gpu using ultra textures without stutters but showing a lot of them in lowres.
- Full controller support with fast swith between both UI.
- If I'm playing with controller, I don't need a mouse cursor in the middle of the screen. Even mouse gamers don't like a cursor while seeing a cinematic intro.

Consoles should be like Steam in how they handle digital games. Buy it once on one of the the big three's stores, it's playable on all future hardware. Plain and simple. I suppose Microsoft is sort of getting there since digital BC titles that you bought on 360 will carry over, saves and all. Nintendo kind of had it backwards. Everything carried over, but not really under a user account, it was tied to your hardware, fucking backwards. Sony fucked up the most seeing as nothing you bought carries over.

We are entering 2016 people, when it comes to holding these console manufactures to a high standard, we clearly aren't doing enough. How can we expect these platforms to grow (lol) and get better if this kind of thing isn't even commonplace across the board?

Ugh. As long as they can be skipped, I guess.

I hate forced kill cams. I do not want to see the person who killed me for 5-15 seconds in an unskippable wait between respawn times. I'd rather see the score screen, or spend those 15 seconds changing my options. But no, I got to spend 5-15 seconds salting the wound. Fuck you, Battlefield.

On a meta note, I think who/how is fine, but where... no. I don't think you should know where your killer was. I found it kinda lame sneaking behind enemy lines, finding an offensive camp spot in a BF game, shooting people in the back, and then magically next spawn wave everyone you killed knows where you were and goes right for you. Why should they know that?

- Dedicated servers for multiplayer for rather obvious reasons. I'm convinced that the real objective of competitive game modes in Space Marine was to wait out all other players leaving during host migration to win the match. I'm afraid I never had the patience to win.
- It's embarrassing to even mention that, but separate sliders for music, sound effects and voices. What the hell, Battlefront?
- Pausable and skippable cutscenes. While we're at it, hiding loading screen behind cutscenes I find unacceptable - I'm way more annoyed by hearing/watching for the Nth time the same scene, especially if I'm not replaying the game but retrying some part of it due to me failing miserably rather than static loading screen I have to see over and over. Oh, and no dynamicly changing loading screens too. I find switching images, some stylized flickering etc. distracting.
- let me save at any time, anywhere with multiple save slots. There were some cool moments in Batman games (the first two) I would be glad to 'save' to maybe replay them at some other point in my life or just for the pleasure of having that option but I'm not desperate enough to manually copy them from game folder, describe every single one of them so I could recognize which one is which and keep on my HDD,
- Feld of View slider,
- fully rebindable keys and controller input. Keep multiple actions under same button to absolute minimum.
- separate in-game selection for language spoken and language in which texts are displayed. Separating menus text from dialogue text would be cool, too!
- customizable/scaling UI that is designed for PC. Also, could I really just input specific number of items of that type in my inventory I want to move/sell instead of using sliders?

Realsim, I played almost all horror games on consoles and when 60 fps is used you lose a lot of details that the game is just not immersive and you are not sucked in but your just playing another game.

Maybe this rule is not immportant this gen seeing how realstic graphics can be on today's consoles even with 60 fps.

what's the point of playing video games if you're going out of your way to try and find experiences that don't feel like video games?

How about Level Select?

Story progression shouldn't be an excuse for being unable to replay great gameplay sections. It's one of my biggest annoyances with games like GOW:

Me: Dude, then there's this awesome part where you beat Hercules' face in!

Dude: Sounds awesome! Can we play it?

Me: Yeah...got like 5 hours?

Dude: -_-

I still don't understand why so many turn-based or even real-time RPGs don't follow Earthbound's example.

Going into earlier areas only to be mobbed by enemies 20-30 levels below you that you just kill in one shot is just time consuming. They should just automatically be beaten.

I don't know the right term for this, but 3d scaling independent of 2d scaling.

Like BF4, Dota 2 and some other games do.

All maps should be free so the multiplayer community of a game isn't split up and cosmetic content should be sold to make up lost revenue fro map pack sales.

1080p and 60 FPS should not be "the standard", at least on PC.

Arbitrary resolution and framerate support should be.
We were pretty much already there in the 00s, it's ridiculous that there should be a step back in this regard.

This. And for consoles, fucking please. Sacrifices have to be made for 60 fps, let the damn devs decide what they want to make.

I agree with all of these except "full controller support". There are genres for which it simply does not work.
