Rant post.
It is a damning tragedy in modern day filmmaking that
this film is only being shown in its true format at these fifteen locations in the entire world.
Additionally, you can find the locations that are showing it in IMAX's new laser projection (at the correct aspect ratio, in 3D, but digitally) at
this link if it is near you. It all goes back to the blockbuster or bust point in modern filmmaking.
Here are the difference between the versions:
You are most likely going to see this:
You are most likely NOT going to see this:
If you're a director like JJ Abrams, I don't think your vision should be compromised in this manner or you should even allow it to happen (TY Quentin). He's lucky that he even gets to use IMAX cameras in the first place. Why even bother to film in this format if no one is going to be able to see it? AND then
brag about it?
#bestformatever And
then back track and say the 3D version of the film
is the way to go? #nologic
It annoys me that seemingly artistic people are okay with letting studios chase $$$ in their name (3D tickets sell for higher prices so fuck paying people to project the movie in 70mm using real projectors and affecting your bottom line) whilst sending the exact opposite message regarding their vision to the paying customer. Talk about selling out.
Anyways, an argument can be made that at some point in time Star Wars was about the art and craft of moviemaking, or the wonder, adventure, and excitement a sci-fi story could contain, or that it was some elaborate and fitting commentary on modern day humanity. But, at face value when considering Star Wars' more recent failures both critically and at the box office things have changed drastically regarding what Star Wars is. IMO it has become abundantly clear that you can no longer make such an argument in the defense of Star Wars and the modern day spectacle that it is. Yet we still do. It is astonishing. Your adored franchise sold out and it's about time we all came to terms with this.
