Doesn't look like FF13, we're finally leaving that era. YES.

But, stealth, Kingdom Hearts/Devil May Cry combat in FF game.

Seriously though, the most impressive thing SE is doing with FFXV and what I can see making the battle system really special is the huge amount of detailed contextual actions. Just from the two videos we got this time and what Tabata said in the ATR, we have:
  • Fire spreading when you cast it on grasslands
  • If fire spreads enough, it'll burn wood objects like the shack nearby
  • Fire will get extinguished quickly when it's raining
  • Your party members and yourself will get burned if you get close to the fire
  • Blizzard will freeze bodies of water so you can walk over them, slow down enemies or freeze them completely
  • Thunder can spread through rain and bodies of water
  • When you parry with a shield, Prompto climbs on the recoiling shield and starts shooting at foes while standing on it
  • When Gladio uses his Hurricane technique, you can see Prompto duck when the blade is close to him
  • Noctis destroys the leg of the Magitek armor and oil gushes out which you can use to your advantage and cause an explosion with Fire
  • Noctis starts rolling on the floor in an attempt to free himself from a crocodile monster's bite
  • Mesmerizes will start running alongside you when you're on Chocobos (chocobo ride and fishing footage)
  • Noctis is holding the teeth of a monster that's on top of him and fighting it off (an UX screenshot I once saw posted here)

When it comes to animations and choreography, FFXV is hands down the best in the industry. It's like every single move and motion is manually crafted and motion-captured, and carefully integrated to the gameplay. It's quite impressive, but on one hand, it can be a bit of a double-edged sword if certain animations were too detailed that it causes some sluggish pacing during battle, i.e. most of the time during Episode Duscae.

Hey no need to steal my posts. :p jk

No I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this. It was always minimalistic but they had some nice elements going on in the UI that maintained a unique look so it weird me out to see them regress in that department. Yes, I really did dig the diamonds that much. And it especially stands out now that they've improved everything else so much. The game's gorgeous, it's only natural to expect the UI to be up to par.

I can only hope they plan on adding that kind of stuff in again now that they're finishing up the UI.

The diamonds weren't just there to compliment the crystalline theme of the game/series, it served as a good marker to see if you were at full health or not. It was fantastic design and I can't believe they got rid of it. I really hope this is just a placeholder, but if the game is releasing this year, then I can see it being final outside of minor tweaks (they need to put the weapon wheel level with health, decrease those bar sizes and hopefully replace those circles with the parallelograms in earlier screens).

At least FFXII was decent, lol. Ffx is my favorite btw.

FFX is probably my fave as well. I'm eagerly waiting for the FFVII remake, as I have somehow missed it totally. And when I tried to played it some years ago I was turned off by the graphics. I have hard time to cope with the early 3D art, even though I like and play old games. That old 3D is ugly and I just can't play those games. I actually loved Golden Gun, but can't play it anymore.

Silly me and the artistic eye.

The soldiers went down fast which was a big problem with Duscae, but I'm still a bit worried, fighting agile enemies like the wolves felt like you spent more time chasing them around than actually attacking, and the camera was a mess.

But yeah, I'm optimistic.

I disagree, I think she looks like a badass. I think Cindy looks pretty good too in a different way.

It's fine that you don't like some character designs but a lot of us do and most of the rest are probably indifferent to them. The loudest voices shouldn't drown out the majority and discourage interesting new FF female character designs.

You can like whatever design you want, but it doesn't stop her from looking like your standard bikini armour warrior from a trash MMO. She's quite clearly serious about battle and her outfit doesn't suit her needs in the slightest. It's a trash design that, instead of suspending disbelief and seeing her as an actual character with a convincing wardrobe, distracts the viewer and takes away from her role.

"Interesting" isn't good enough. Judge Drace from FF12 was good. Stella looks good. The black haired woman looks fascinating. This dragoon looks like a mess.

Doesn't look much like FF anymore but hey after three mostly lackluster mainline titles I'm willing to try something different. At the very least I hope it's solid even if it doesn't set the world on fire. I wasn't a fan of Duscae; sluggish performance, clunky combat + camera, large open space with nothing really to do all turned me off. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt though.

I'm not going to touch on the combat since that's one thing that's been known about FFXV. It's an Action RPG, of course it's going to be action.

Stealth in FFXV is fairly light from what's seen and described to my understanding. There is no instant ko upon failure for example, and I highly doubt Square Enix is going to bother including stealth items like tranquilizer, silencer, traps, etc. The mission in this footage was to demolish the base. Just that. Some stealth movement is just one way to take out as much threats as possible, or you can just charge right in and fight.

And besides, past FF actually had stealth sections as well that were quite memorable, including FFVI (Locke in South Figaro) and FFVII with Shinra Building. No comment on turrets.

Check the early versus footage, it shouldn't come as a shock. People being surprised at this point in time is just lol

Exactly. The first VS 13 footage literally showed a lot of this. If you've been following this game since then it should come as no shock and it's pretty much why people are still hype.

If you haven't I guess I can understand your reservations. But what they are showing now is almost no different to early VS 13 footage.

I think that the animation is unfinished, the swords are supposed to be glassy, look back at the E3 gameplay every time Noctis switched weapons the glassy swords would spin.

Yeah, I thought that was the supposed look of weapon change - i.e., glassy kinda like Armiger activated in Duscae. But somehow, we have visible physical weapons change.

And it's all based in a fantasy world where magic, robots and monsters exist. Why are people always comparing real world physics with some computer generated games. Do you spoil movies like that as well? "Well, he can't jump that high because the moon's gravitational pull isn't that strong here on earth. Bad movie, it's not real."

Only thing difference is that Noctis can longer ride/hijack the mechs.

Oh. Well sorry, I haven't really been paying attention to it. Actively avoided, I guess I should say.

Nope!

And as I said. I can understand people who haven't followed this game since it's inception almost nearly decade ago. But most of this comes as not a shock to most of us and something we've been anticipated really.

Final Fantasy is ever-changing. Each entry is basically a new game with the FF title+number stamped on to it, so I don't get the complaints.

Some games don't age that well, especially the ones from psone era. I'm also excited for FFVII remake and wish that they'd keep turn based combat (I know that it is not happening though). To me it feels like we are seeing the renaissance of Japanese games and it feels soo good.

I still think the faces being shown at real time in the HUD was amazing. I don't think I've seen a game do it so it's something unique that died with Versus.
The problem is that the faces are rather distracting, don't add much (as you can see your members in action anyway), and take up real estate on the screen. I'm loving the minimalist menus they have right now, but I do prefer the one from that tech demo with the rain and frog.

Final Fantasy.

I really don't understand your mindset and never will but I have to say that she debuted almost five years ago. It's not even a recent character design for you to critique, and it passed without controversy then and frankly, right now.

The rest of us will just enjoy the game.

You're right but I liked the idea and still think it's unique. I don't mind the UI now and the faces aren't something I'm clamoring for to return to this game.

Because unless I'm missing something here, enemies still die from being skewered in the chest. Even fantasy worlds have their own rules and physics to abide by. Hence the common criticism about the guys' attire too. Not fit for travel nor battle.

Well being dismissive of any criticism isn't right either, and I realize for many fans there is a lot to criticize, but I would appreciate it if some people would elaborate on their criticism. I'm going to bed now so I'll catch up on this thread in the morning.

That's certainly fair, people should substantiate their criticisms. But honestly I don't feel the thread sets itself up for success when the first bunch of posts are variations of 'Oh here we go, time for lots of drive-by shitposting! I bet none of them even follow this game's development at all!'

Here's the thing: most people don't follow a game's development in intense detail for ten years, and despite that they are still perfectly entitled to their opinions. And even those of us who have are still entitled to be disappointed!

FF has had all of these things for a while now. The trick is where though. Most of these action elements have been relegated to FMVs and set piece moments.

Most of what they've shown, turrets, cars, mechs, guns, etc. etc. etc. have always been a part of FF, but the gameplay is trying to replicate the feeling of playing an FMV. As a person that started playing FF with FFX and then the PSX FFs, this is exactly what I wanted out of the series. The FMVs were what I wanted the games to be like, and the gameplay was more of a stand in to my imagined action. Now FFXV seems to be realizing this.

I can understand that it's blind-siding some people, but this is the trajectory I've been wanting for a long time.
