I think if Sony was smart, they'd make their own storefront on PC and do the exact same thing.

Good for everyone.
So what is MS gameplan to block Steam?

Yeah, I think it's a good move. Ben Kuchera sums up my thoughts nicely.

That'll never happen. Why would MS give steam users the reason to switch OS's?
Have they ever blocked anything from Apple, Google, Amazon, etc?

The lifetime sales for QB would be like tenfold on Steam compared to what they would be if its Win10 store only. MS needs to suck it up and give Valve that cut..
Why are false equivalences being made with the ps4 in this thread? Street fighter is just one game. With the Xbox one we are talking about (potentially) all of the exclusives being on the PC as well. There is a big difference.
Whatever makes you guys feel better I guess.
But doesn't exclusivity mean more sales and higher profits according to Kuchera? Or is that only when Microsoft does it?

Do they need to block Steam? If the Steam user base is predominantly Windows based then MS just needs to give consumers a few incentives to stay that way and keep upgrading to newer versions of Windows.

If one buys an Xbox because of an exclusive, there's a possibility that they will buy other games for it. If they don't buy an Xbox there's 0 chance they will buy games for the system.

To force users into using the Windows Store? MS wants into that walled apps gold mine bad.
Of course they won't block Steam overnight. It's got to be a gradual weaning off process.

But there's no need to even try to block Steam at all. Unless of course I'm not understanding your definition of "block". They will just release their games on the Windows Store while you can go about your business using Steam. I mean, you'll still be able to play games from both stores in the same PC.
I really want to see how MS compete with steam and other PC storefront on fair grounds.
Xbox exclusive on Windows store is nice, but I don't think they can win with that alone.
They won't, just like EA and Ubisoft aren't actually competing with Steam.I really want to see how MS compete with steam and other PC storefront on fair grounds.

If gears and all the other games come to PC, definitely getting them there. Better graphics and better performance.

What I was talking about earlier was really about how do we extend that to the Windows ecosystem and the Windows 10 devices? And we are going to -- we are going to bring that content to our Windows devices. We actually launched the first launch of a Triple A game through the Windows 10 marketplace recently, Rise of the Tomb Raider. It's early. We're learning. But when you think about bringing this content to Windows and using our distribution mechanisms and our engagement mechanisms across our global customer base, we think there's a big opportunity for us to distribute third party content through our store. Gamers are a big part of any store transaction and that's a significant area of focus for us.
I really want to see how MS compete with steam and other PC storefront on fair grounds.

If they can migrate all the users of Steam to Windows Store they'll finally have an active user base for it. No doubt this is their endgame, the walled app ecosystem is $$$ and they need to jumpstart theirs badly.

WTF is this shit?
Didn't Phil praise steam a while back?
"I think they've got a great vision," he says. "I've said it before, the work they've done on the Windows gaming side for 15, 20 years has been amazing. They've been the shepherds of that ecosystem while we've been a little bit absent. They have a great vision for where they're trying to take Steam and the whole connection, and giving away Source is a smart move. - Link
I’m a big fan of Steam, 95% of Steam games are played on Windows. At the end of day, we want to be the best at giving gamers their greatest gaming experiences as a platform, publisher or retailer. That said, we’ll obviously be shipping a Windows Store with the launch of Windows 10. We’ll make sure our first-party franchises are well assorted in our first-party store. It’s good for the store to have first-party games using our service, this will be the same for Xbox Live on Windows. The combination of first-party studios using our service and store will make us a better platform. - Link

Not a chance in hell that's happening.
But we do know the power of Steam sales, and we've seen fuck-all from MS on that front. We don't know the power of Xbox friends/achievement/cross buy/cross play/MS exclusive yet. Also, PC is like MS home turf, there is so much they can do to win.
Because it's funny to say that Street Fighter V not being on Xbox helps PS4 sales while at the same time saying that Quantum Break being on PC will hurt greatly Xbox sales as the former is on PC too, and the latter still isn't on any other gaming console.
On top of this, I brought up more than just Street Fighter V. I've also mentioned people who have stated that PS4 indies that are on PC too and aren't on Xbox One help PS4 sales (something that I also agree with by the way).
It's not a big difference to people who only play on consoles - i.e. the majority of console gamers.
Haha, seriously? Yep -- I'm definitely making the comparison to make myself feel better. Not to show that most console gamers still view games as exclusive if they are only on one console as many of them don't care about PC gaming to begin with.
No there's not a big difference. Sony fans saying SF5 will increase PS4 because it's console exclusive while isn't true when it comes to QB.
The whole thing is just fanboys being delusional. Sony could actually benefited from releasing The Order on PC since it disappointed critically and sales wise.
Every console exclusive should be on PC period. Sony and Nintendo should follow. It's a win for gamers. Why limit my options on where to play the games I bought?
They already do with Fable Anniversary, Kalimba, Halo: Spartan Assault, Halo: Spartan Strike, Ori, State of Decay, Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, & Cobalt.Give you free games if you buy them on win 10. Not really a move to block them but I would not share revenue with steam for my 1st party games.
I would argue that perhaps they're fighting too many fronts considering they also compete with Google and Apple.MS has to compete against Steam, Sony, and Nintendo to try to win the PC and living room. They definitely have to go above and beyond to try to convince users it's the best thing to use their services and play their games.
Good times ahead gamers.
We don't know the power of Xbox friends/achievement/cross buy/cross play/MS exclusive yet. Also, PC is like MS home turf, there is so much they can do to win.

I suppose they could have waited for Windows 10 to release these on their own other platform but they chose to release those on another competing service as well.

I agree with you. I would be all in on PC gaming if I could get Sony and Nintendo exclusives there as well. The PC could be like a mall and the game publishers have competing stores which will drive prices down and be more consumer friendly than locking people into hardware and ecosystems.I agree with all said here.
As an X1 owner, I don't mind the first party stuff going to PC if it means more successful games.
Would be nice if they dropped the subscription for MP though, and just make Gold into what PS+ used to be.
Now that consoles aren't as heavy subsidized, there seems to be little excuse for keeping it.

No matter how powerful the lure of Xbox is, on PC it's just another storefront.
I use Steam, GoG, Origin, even Uplay. I lose nothing by creating one more account for the Windows Store.
If they want me to "migrate over" so I stop using all those storefronts and use theirs near exclusively, their service would have to have all the best features of all of them with none of the downsides.
Not a chance in hell that's happening.

Actually, you don't even have to create a new acc for the windows store....it's the same as your acc on your pc![]()
And Amazon. Hell, they all compete with each other.
Yep, Amazon too.
As far as the op goes, I think we'll see the results of the move to releasing more exclusives to PC in a few more years. If we see a higher quantity of new games come out (preferably a mix of old and new IP's) then it's good for the Xbox brand and by extension Xbox owners but if it's around the same output as now with the same issue of less indy's and 3rd party support then it wasn't that great of a benefit to Xbox fans.
I just meant in general, they're doing surfaces, mobile phones, OS's, business and game software, music & movie services, game and PC hardware, AR equipment (Hololens). At some point they're going to have to contract again and focus on what works best for them.Yes, they have many people to compete with...I wouldn't say apple/Google are going to be big players in the gaming world... yet but for casuals, they got it. The living room is still a pretty core gaming front.
I think you'll see a lot more Indies as the Xbox store and Windows store combine. Xbox being able to run w10 apps/games make it easier for a dev to just "build once" and distribute wherever. That's been MS goal with UWP. its just gonna start this year. I know I cant wait to dev on it.
Front of my mind is if Microsoft is going to clean up the app store which is currently chock full of other people's IP, web container apps [usually for someone else's website], free software being re-sold for money and other assorted garbage.

Satya Nadella said:I just think about three things. There are a few other efforts we do, and I’ve been very clear about those efforts and why they exist and why we are proud of them. But, there are three products in all of this. There is Windows, there is Office 365, and there is Azure. That’s it. Everything else to me is, of course, you can call them features, you can call them parts of that... - Link
