What a bomb Zoolander 2 ended up being. Crazy that Deadpool and Zoolander have a nearly identical production budget ($50m) whilst one is an action flick, the other a comedy; shows how bloated Z2 is.
Completely baffled how ZL2 got in to production. Nobody, absolutely nobody, asked for it. Is Stiller's career really at the point where he's resorting to sequels to his early hits? He may have done two Museums too many, but I didn't think his career had plummeted that much.

As a white man, I find y'alls lack of faith for Gods of Egypt is disturbing.

I know they charge more for 3D but most people I know avoid that garbage whenever possible. I'd imagine lack of 3D helps more than it hurts these days. Did Star Wars have a 3D version? The cinema I saw it in didn't offer it as far as I know.

Pardon my ignorance but this is an xmen movie? Had no idea.

It's essentially a X-Men spin off, it lives in the same universe and X-Men characters show up in it.

Worldwide Updates:

The Revenant - $361M
Kung Fu Panda 3 - $261M
The Fifth Wave - $95M
Zoolander 2 - $24M
The Big Short - $118M
Daddy's Home - $229M

Disney needs Marvel to create a Marvel Knights spin off like how Fox has 20th Century Fox and Searchlight or Sony Pictures and Sony Classic

Marvel Knights = Rated R, adult theme movies

Marvel Knights:

Moon Knight
Punisher
Ghost Rider
etc.

Already exists. Punisher War Zone and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance were both Marvel Knights movies.

Edit: Funnily, the weekend Ghost Rider 2 debuted, Ryan Reynolds was #1 in the Box Office with Safe House.

Holy shit dude, hyperbole much? Zoolander sequel has been mooted since the first hit DVD. It'll make a tidy profit when Z2 hits DVD. And yes, the first one is a film a lot of people enjoyed.

So basically Fox riding pretty damn nicely right now. With the front runner for some Oscar gold and most likely Oscar Boost + Deadpool taking names all weekend long.

It does bring a smile to my face to see Deadpool do well. Basically being pushed by Reynolds, Miller, and Fans. Turns out to be the biggest success in quite a while for comics.

If I thought the xmen movies were shit will I enjoy this? Have yet to see an ad or trailer but mildly intrigued by the gaf hype. Clearly I know nothing of the character... lol. I did enjoy ant man, but the few other marvel movies I saw were shit.

Good for Deadpool, I don't think anyone saw it doing so well. I was hoping it would be a moderate success, at least.

I'm more surprised at how poorly Zoolander 2 did. Maybe it took too long? I don't know if people really pay attention to reviews, especially when most comedies end up getting blasted.

It is absolutely nothing like the Xmen films.

This.

It may be shit, but Stiller's movies mostly always turn round a tidy sum internationally and then through home media when alls said and done.

Its just nice to see it get destroyed like this by an underdog troubled project like this on opening night.

Deadpool is more of a comedy with some action in it. It's very character focused.

Already I've seen way to many people "advising" Warner Bros. to make Suicide Squad an R. Y'know, cause Deadpool.

This. It is sad how many people will attribute Deadpool's success to everything but why it was actually successful.

-It stayed true to the character and did not try to make him appealing to everyone by filtering through focus groups. (FUCK focus groups seriously, the top reason movies suck nowadays)

-It has a low budget, this is key. Low budget means you can't have fluff and you need to get creative with everything. It is a much better movie because of this.

-Ryan Reynolds nailed deadpool. Any other actor couldn't have pulled it off as well as he did.

-Morena Baccarin's character is amazing. She is not some helpless hot chick cliche. She was a great strong character. The love story was very touching and awesome I thought as well. Two broken beople finding each other and falling in love. In that way it is actually one of the best love story movies for this Valentines day and box office reflects that. You won't have that kinda opening if girlfriends weren't agreeing to go to the movie this weekend.

-Marketing was amazing.

But I am sure studios will look at this and go "damn people love cursing in movies we need to have our superheroes curse all the time now."

Last Year's calls for superhero fatigue were based on Age of Ultron underperforming, Ant-man being a movie about Ant-man, and the bombing of a Fantastic Four movie that everyone predicted would bomb from the release of the first set photos.

Since the release of The Avengers, Fantastic Four is the only superhero film that has failed to crack the $400M mark worldwide. Fantastic Four and the Wolverine are the only two under $500M WW.

Not even major animated films have that sort of track record any more. Superhero films aren't going anywhere. With Deadpool blowing up, this will almost certainly be the biggest year for superhero films domestically. Perhaps Worldwide as well.

I know superhero movies aren't going anywhere. I was saying that in response to the few people that keep saying that these movies are going away.

If I could go back in time and tell teenage me that a Deadpool film turned out to be this successful, he would be so damn happy.

Exceeding (my) critical expectations and financial expectations, this movie was fantastic and deserves every record-breaking dollar. Looking forward to seeing it again.

Everyone loves Skullpoopl!

Yuup. Look at all the people calling for other R rated comic book adaptions. Would showing gore, dropping f-bombs and having graphic nudity really make Suicide Squad a better movie? It works for Deadpool

No one is asking for a carbon copy of Deadpool, but if things got cut that could flesh out the story more or scenes that give more of a visual oomph due to a rating, why not

All I asked is if Suicide can maybe see if they had stuff to be cut to come in on a PG13 rating, if they have scene they want but could make it a R rating, if they should go for it

Hoping Gods of Egypt mega bombs cause I want
need
Triple 9 to do as well as possible.

An R rated Suicide Squad movie doesn't sound like a bad idea to me but it seems a little late in the development cycle of that movie to start doing any major overhauls. And if you're building this shared cinematic universe it might be a bit troublesome having this entry with the Joker being rated R and that entry with the same Joker being rated pg-13.

The only people I can see not enjoying this are people who just have an aversion to violence or are too pretentious to enjoy pottymouth humor. There's really something in the movie for everyone.

Probably not going to happen since it was banned there.

lol yeah I figured. Maybe it'll still be in cinemas in Usa in a month when I'm back. Hope it has strong legs. My mom always drags me to the movies when I'm around, would be cool to watch something decent for a change.

I enjoy these things. Maybe that's why I didn't enjoy xmen or marvel movies.

Hopefully this means less meddling and more adherence to source material when it's demanded going forward

We can only hope. Or at least studios also attaching talent that loves and respects the source material.

If Deadpool became one of the biggest hits of the year & BvS somehow disappointed the Warer Bros. execs, would the big media narrative become "General audiences only want fun/comedic superhero movies"?

I think BvS, Civil War, and Suicide Squad all underperforming would have to shift the narrative that way. Now, if all films hit as big as expected, we can hope the lesson is "Audiences like different types of comic book films."

For opening weekend, Force Awakens played 53% 2D, and 47% 3D. So 3D was still a huge chunk of the business. 28% of that 3D was normal 3D, and 12% was IMAX 3D, with 7% being the premium large format. IMAX and PLF would bring in an even higher ticket price.

Well said. And it's true. Here comes a bunch of shitty r rated comic book films with a bunch of unnecessary cursing, violence and tits

Color me surprised. When I rocked up to the cinema the only choice I had was 2d as far as I know. This was Malaysia though. Was very happy to not wear glasses and leave with a headache! 3D movies have caused me to go to significantly fewer films over the past 5 years or so.

The 3D percentage obviously varies depending on the film. Sometimes the studios mandate that X percentage has to be 3D, or whatnot. And the percentage of tickets bought for 3D also depends on the type of film. Star Wars was one of the higher ones recently from what I can remember.

The 3D percentages aren't usually posted in these threads, but many sites post them when doing weekend numbers, including breakdowns by age and gender if you are ever interested in stuff like that.

EDIT: On a side note, all I can think about with your user name is this:

My theater put Zoolander 2 in the big main screen on Friday night, and Deadpool (while still on one of their premium screens) on a smaller one. What a fucking mistake that was.

That movie didn't need to be a 50 million budget film, Zoolander 2 should've had a budget of 25-30 mil, any higher is ridiculous. At least It would've made it's budget back.

It just kept on going up. At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if actuals are 140M. Good for Reynolds, and the film deserves it.

My theater has 4 big screens with one of them being IMAX and Deadpool not only had the IMAX but 1 extra large screen for the entire weekend. The bad part is that the Suicide Squad trailer was only shown on the regular versions.
