PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

Still can't believe this is a thing that is actually happening.

Unless they offer a super awesome exchange program, they are just fucking all trust they earned with the original ps4 release. and they sold millions of these things.

It's anti consumer, it's dumb, how can you release a new console when some of your first party developers haven't even released THEIR FIRST GAME on the console?

I just bought a 1080p tv thinking "ps4 will last a few more years, no point in getting a 4k panel just yet".

Well thank you Sony.

For literally everything you own someone out there has a better version of it. Has this stopped you from buying a car, house, tv, phone, laptop, etc.? Why should consoles be any different?

Consumers have had the perspective that once you buy a console, and it survives throughout the generation, you don't have to upgrade that console at all to play the optimal version of that console version.

Of course there are better versions of the games. On PC. It's something that consumers who purchase consoles understand and accept. This hasn't changed in decades. So people are understandably upset.

I understand why some people are upset, but personally I'm excited by the news. The years with hardware launches are always the most exciting. I want everything to keep progressing and the long stagnation of the 360/PS3 gen was boring as hell. When PS4K launches I'll just buy the new one and sell the old one to take away some of the sting.

Also, as a PC gamer of over 25 years, I want to say that people stating that this is "just like PC gaming so might as well switch" are either only referring to a select aspect of it (i.e. money), or they don't know what they are talking about. While Steam makes things easier than ever, there is still a lot of tinkering and bullshit that comes with playing games on PC that you will not get from console gaming, no matter how often they iterate. If, at some point, consoles require you to edit .INI files and apply finicky community-sourced patches to games in order to get them to run right or crash less often, I will join you in declaring consoles pointless. I don't think that's happening yet.

The whole "you must tinker" thing is overstated and as a self-professed PC gamer of over 25 years you should probably know that by now.

Jump into any troubleshooting thread in the PSN forums and there's still shittons of tinkering and what-ifs and just general troubleshooting when shit goes south on the PS4 as well. And yes, I say this as an owner of a gaming rig and PS4. You won't be opening up .ini files, but again, that's fairly rare today unless the game launches broken or your hardware is questionable. I haven't had to do that myself for a really long time (years).

Anyway, I'm not trying to "sell" people on a PC. I'm trying to point out how this is flawed, and how the praises for this are kind of pointless given what the PC platform offers. A lot of people tend to not even look in the direction of PC gaming out of habit. If they're that on board with this they would do well to at least consider looking in that direction again.

So with the PS4k seemingly real are the Xbox rumors legit as well.
Are there any? I'm not aware. There was a mention from Spencer that they could go in that direction if they choose so due to UWA, but no rumors from developers to hint at the existence of the new console, or anything of sort.

Are you honestly comparing a shift towards iterative hardware cycles to draconian hardware bound anti consumer DRM polices?
Do you honestly believe everyone is going to jump on the train and tell sony "take my money"? You're kidding yourself there will be some backlash. How much depends on how they announce and execute this

Fallout 5 launches and literally isnt playable on PS4. Only on PS4.5

Sure it will, it will just be 900p and 30fps locked. PS4k will be 1080p/60fps with better shadows and image quality. 900p has proven to be a good step down for gaining performance and I don't see that changing. It is like many PC games, people drop resolution to gain performance (in addition to other settings). I really don't think Sony would be stupid enough to make PS4 versions of games run like complete shit, they will probably dictate a baseline like 900p depending on the game.

If we take one of the recent good looking games like The Division, on the PS4k it would be 1080p/60fps with better shadows and AA Solutions/relfections etc. while the current PS4 version runs at 1080p/30fps. It will vary on game, but I think Sony will be smart and mandate a baseline for the PS4 version of games.

Speaking of this I gotta ask...

What 4K tv do you guys suggest? I have a Bravia 42 that I've had since late 09 when Arkham Asylum came out. Time for an upgrade.

Yeah, from today you won't be able to play the game that will release in the future and all the games are worthless so it's clear you bought it for nothing.

No. Why don't people get this? After using my PS3 for six years, I finally was able to go 'next gen'! I just spent 400 euro to experience the best graphics (console) gaming has to offer for the next 3-4 years. Again, I bought my PS4 2 weeks ago, to finally not play with PS3 graphics and join the future, and be at the 'top of the game'.

And stop condescending, that's not appropriate.

Maybe this will help people understand why people are freaking out.

It's the uncertainty this brings to the table.

- Does this extend the generation?

- How many iterations are we going to get in a generation?

- Do we even have generations anymore?

- How is this really going to affect games short term? Long term?

- PSVR isn't even out and performance is much more critical there and they're already talking about versions enhanced/targeting PS4.5? What does that mean for this new unreleased platform?

This brings a lot of questions that didn't exist before and it breaks expectations that comes with consoles. There are so many unknowns that no matter how positive you may be on this, you just don't know if everything will play out to be good. There's good reason to be concerned at this point with so little info that we have.

Well, you could expect games that currently run at 30fps to run at 60fps with maybe a bit better visuals (things like shaders/lighting/particle count, etc.). Or you could stay at 30fps and ramp up the visuals quite a bit. Devs would have a lot more at their disposal. If the past is any indicator, they'll choose visuals over fps most of the time.

As for how this will impact the current PS4: the hope is that it won't. Games should look the same on the PS4 as they would have if the PS4K never happened, but YMMV depending upon the individual developer and how much optimization they're willing to do.

Ok thanks for taking the time to explain that. Much Appreciated. Yeah, not sure how i feel about this. Guess will have to see how this plays out.

Am I the only one who gets this thread as the top news page when you search PS4 in google?

Cocky Sony is back brehs

I hope they have some kind of reasonable upgrade program because if not that's just stupid. I bought my PS4 at launch, but I'm not a fan of these type of upgrades (90s Sega). Granted, it's not like the require you to upgrade to play the PS4K games, so it could be worse I guess.

So nx might be better and this might be a reactionary move? If not, why would they bother? Anyway it's a shitty move for all the ps4 recent users including me....

C'mon guys, Nintendo is totally irrilevant in the console home space. This is a contest between Sony and Microsoft only. If NX is superior to Ps4/One they simply don't care at all.

You could absolutely do that, you will hear how your current PS4 is still very relevant and will get the same games.

This is aimed for those who want to close the performance gap with PC and have their games run better, as well as VR.

There is no point in buying PS:VR if you only have a original PS4 then, that's twenty million potential lost sales then?

I have PS:VR on order, if I'm going to get an inferior experience because I only have a original PS4 I may as well cancel my order now.

I doubt they will do anything. PS4 is already 299 right now so what could they offer you other than what Gamestop already dishes out for a trade in?

I thought all of the bad PS3 era decision making went out the window in February 2013. Why introduce this 18 - 20 months before PS4 hits the five year mark? Might as well wait until the next system to fully integrate VR. Dumb as hell.

Ugh... it's going to suck so hard when this comes out and all our old ass PS4s explode FORCING us to spend 500$ all over again. Fuck Sony I'm building a pc.

But seriously how is more choices bad for us? Of course games will come to both and they will still play on ps4 just like they would have. If anything the new one will get less optimisation and we won't get our full 500$ worth out of it.
