Batman V Superman’ Takes A Dive With -70% Second Weekend

God forbid people form their own opinion? Movie tickets are hardly expensive.
Just because something is bad doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. Seriously? How about not policing how people chose to spend their time and money instead of telling people to have self control? That sounds much more productive.
Have no problem with people willing to make up their own minds about things. That said, when the overwhelming chorus is negative and the film maker's pedigree is in question, I would rather they open their minds to spending their movie-going dollars on something more original than simply jumping off a cliff like a lemming out of obligation. There are lots of great films out there to make up your own mind about that don't have a bad reputation going in.

Didn't Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 drop 72% after its $169 million opening weekend?
Yes. It dropped 72% on its second weekend, but Captain America: The First Avenger opened that weekend, so it had competition. Unlike BvS which went against God's Not Dead 2 and Meet the Blacks...

Far too many people are posting in this thread saying they actively went out of their way to purchase tickets and watch this movie DESPITE the fact that they knew it would be bad in advance.

You know, you could have just not gone to see it. Have some self-control. If anything, a 70% drop isn't large enough. Didn't Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 drop 72% after its $169 million opening weekend?

How would I engage in these sorts of conversations without seeing the film for myself and forming my own opinion beforehand?

I mean, the alternative would be to involve myself in all of these back-and-forths without having seen it. But who does that?

Who goes on the internet and complains about things they haven't seen/played/tried?

Madness.

I don't think anyone is that morally corrupt.

Yes but they clearly don't want to or already do and just saw this too.

China is Marvel country. Batman v Superman is going to be beat by Ant-Man in China. Ant-Man.

And we know what Snyder thinks of Ant-Man.

http://www.avclub.com/article/zack-snyder-says-batman-and-superman-are-imperviou-225154

Director Zack Snyder believes that Batman and Superman transcend the superhero genre in a way that certain Marvel heroes can’t, according to an interview with The Daily Beast. When asked for his take on Steven Spielberg’s comments that the superhero genre eventually will go the way of the Western and die off, Snyder said, “I feel like he’s right. But I feel like Batman and Superman are transcendent of superhero movies in a way, because they’re Batman and Superman.” Indeed, there were myriad Superman and Batman films before the recent superhero craze, so it makes sense that those movies would exist after the bubble has burst.

Then, Snyder threw some shade at Marvel, saying that Bats and Supes aren’t “just, like, the flavor of the week Ant-Man—not to be mean, but whatever it is. What is the next Blank-Man?” (Presumably, he meant for us to fill in the blank before “Man” as a comment on the interchangeability of second-tier superheroes, and not to start discussing the 1994 Damon Wayans superhero spoof Blankman.) Few would argue that Ant-Man is anywhere near as iconic as Batman or Superman. But some would argue that Ant-Man is a better movie than Man Of Steel, and it doesn’t seem to occur to Snyder that perhaps the quality of the final product has some say in which superhero films stay around for years to come.

I've never gotten into the whole man child Marvel vs. DC squabbling either. I prefer DC's universe, but I like Marvel's too. It's like the ridiculous 'console warz' bullshit on the other side of this forum. I feel like I get hit with a wave of stupid everytime some random in a comments section or on a forum accuses a website or actual movie goers of being payed employees for whatever company they are crusading against. I can't even visit the DC subreddit anymore because of how much of a self-parody it is now.

It was definitely better.

I still don't get the schism among some of the bigger film fans here regarding Iron Man 3. Most of the people who think it's a terrible movie unabashedly praise almost everything else Shane Black's ever had his hands on. This goodwill extends all the way to fucking MONSTER SQUAD.

Yet all that goodwill is willing to get chucked to the side, despite the fact Iron Man 3 is pretty much 100% Shane Black through and through, because the Mandarin isn't used like he was in the comics. And the Mandarin in the comics isn't all that fucking great to begin with. What Black did with him is the best thing that's ever happened to him.

Iron Man 3 is one of my least favorite MCU films (I'd only rank it above Hulk and Thor 2), and I don't really have any issue with how they treated the Mandarin. The film was getting pulled in way too many directions, so many creative decisions felt like bad compromises and so much of the plot felt contrived. RDJ's performance was also a bit strange and a lot of his line delivery really threw me off.

Also, the Shane Black buddy cop movie should've been Iron Man + Hulk

The Mandarin "twist" was just the cherry on top on the things I had problems with with one of the worst comic Movie I have ever watched.

Good old IM3. Which is still the best marvel movie to date. The Twist was great, the script screamed Black, and it was the best character piece in any of the films. I love the villain too. One that Stark created.

Like Ultron in A:AOU, Whiplash in IR2 and Iron Monger in the Iron Man?

Didn't someone say that like 70% of the BvS screens were going to be changed to some other movie the week after it released? That would explain the epic drop (WB hopes).

The movie lost 70% of its screens because performance was lower than expected since Day 1 and weekday legs were shit. China has a lot of mobility in its theatre business. In North America most exhibitors sign on to show major films for at least 2 weeks even if they bomb. If something bombs in China, it won't even make it to the second weekend before losing a ton of venues/screens.

As a lifelong comics reader, who mainly reads Marvel out of the big two, I have no fucking idea why "fans" took it so personally that a dumb villain like The Mandarin was used like that.

I think it's another example (like the reaction to Ultron daring to tell jokes) of the tone of trailers getting movie fans attached to a certain interpretation of something. I don't think it has anything to do with comics.

I fucking loved reading some user post on the Roosterteeth forums that it would have been fine to have a stereotypical Asian Mandarin because "we don't know what they are doing over there".

The steps that have led him to being the leading force on franchises that are among Warner Bros' highest grossing are unfathomable.

Also: doing Watchmen so a lesser director like Terry Gilliam wouldn't.

Like, this guy is a goldmine for dumb jock quotes.

It's really, really weird that some people think DC fans can't legitimately dislike these movies. I know there are a few Marvel fans who haven't enjoyed any of the MCU either.

Snyder must have been relying heavily on the weight of the characters/branding to carry this film.

That might have worked out for them pre Avengers.

Something I asked in the other thread: You think exhibitors are gonna start dumping screens starting next Friday? Normally you wouldn't start losing screens/theaters, especially without any solid competition coming in to force the film off, but this seems to be quite a thorough rejection happening on the part of the audience.

Yeah, Tony's pretty good at making bad guys, which explains his motivation in Civil War

One of my favorite character bits in Hickman's run is during a description of Tony who had fallen off the map for a bit and it goes into the fact that despite everything Tony has done to try make up for his past sins, he's always been unnaturally gifted at making weapons of destruction. It's right as they revealed he'd made a sol's hammer powered by a dyson sphere and wipes out an entire armada of spaceships. I consider him constantly fucking up and creating his own villains one of the key aspects of the character.

I don't see it dropping off too many screens in NA, it's still more profitable to screen that most of the other movies coming out in the next few weeks.

Unless Hardcore Henry blows the fuck up for some reason.

He's inarticulate as shit but the fact he does pushups doesn't make him a "jock."

The idea that he's some sort of lunkheaded "bro" invading nerd spaces is pretty silly. If you wanna dig in that direction, it's far more likely he's less the personification of fratboys deciding "nerd shit" is cool, and more like the masculine idiot inherent at the core of much of nerd fantasy given free reign.

It's not like nerds don't have their own breed of inarticulate dipshit who doesn't understand the stuff they love. It's not like toxic masculinity never soiled this humble land until the huns raided it

I think Ironman 2 is worse. Ironman 2, 3, Thor 2 all left the same bad taste in my mouth.

I rather watch a Hawkeye or Black Widow movie than Thor 3.

I wouldn't think so I mean even if it drops precipitously again, which i doubt... it'll probably be much gentler, it's still gonna be the big attraction despite not setting the world on fire. Exhibitors won't care how badly it's doing unless they have soemthing they think will bring in more and I don't think anything's coming out.

Such a terrible quote. Guess all the stupid/constant comparisons make sense. If HE'S doing it, what else can one expect? Ant-Man was a fine movie. Nothing out of this world, but certainly not some throwaway flick in the slightest. Guess it's a small enough movie that it's safe to poke fun at..

He's talking about the characters themselves, not the movies.

Believe Polygon had a article about something similar to this and why you DON'T have to see it, not about how bad the movie is but the mentally of some people and that they HAVE to see it, despite the movie not having many redeeming qualities.

Edit: Found it. http://www.polygon.com/2016/3/24/11299874/you-dont-have-to-see-batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justice

I'm sure the number of screenings for the film has already taken a tumble. As for screens, there's definitely the case that this doesn't need to tie up 3-4 screens in most multiplexes for what would generously be a mid-20s third weekend.

I doubt a ton of venues will completely drop the film in week 3 though. There are two 3k+ venue openers and a couple limited releases coming next weekend. However, you still have shit like Allegiant, Miracles from Heaven, and MBFGW2 tying up over 3k screens each. 10 Cloverfield Lane is still in over 2500 venues. Greek Wedding 2 is the only one of those films hitting 8 digits this weekend. They will take most of the theatre losses next weekend.

My guess is that BvS will drop about 400-500 locations next weekend. Perhaps even less.

Is that the one where Reed Richards explains the differences in their geniuses? Because yes, that was brilliant. Really speaks to what makes these characters tick.

I never understood the hate for that quote. I mean Ant-Man was way better than BvS but he's referring to Batman/Superman being more iconic which is true.

Folks sort of see red when Marvel vs DC can be inferred, mentioned above.

In fairness, Snyder should've used an example that wouldn't get people heated. You know, the likes of The Spirit or Steel.

Actually, I'd take a new Steel film. Dammit Snyder!

Their reply was brutal

http://variety.com/2015/film/news/sebastian-stan-zack-snyder-marvel-dc-war-1201598888/

“Yeah, I’m sitting here and I’m listening to you and I’m thinking, ‘Do I want to fire some shots at DC right now, at Zack Snyder?'” Stan said in an interview with Collider.

“Something about, ‘It’s not going to be your flavor-of-the-week Ant-Man.’ And I was like, ‘Oh thanks, Zack. That’s great. Way to do something original,'” Stan continued. “But I would say we’re still making something very original in our own way. I mean, the Russo’s are coming in and taking something people are used to and they’re shaping it up and changing it in a very different way. They’re not trying to mimic a better Christopher Nolan movie or something like that.”

Hopefully this puts an end to any plans WB had for the DCEU. They need to massively rework everything. Change the creative team responsible, postpone/cancel the Justice League movie - maybe it's also a good idea to look for new actors. Because while I think that they have potential, they are just tainted now. I do not care for Cavill as Superman anymore. And I very much do not care for Affleck as Batman anymore. I don't even want to see the planned Batman movie, and I'm a huge Batman fan. By having Batman torture/kill his enemies, they completely destroyed his character. The only way to fix this is to completely reboot everything or to change it with time travel or something like that. Biggest disappointment of the year for me.

He's saying Batman and Superman are more popular than Ant-Man. Which is true. Don't see why that's considered so inflammatory.

Because it's my precious mahvel movie.

Batman and Superman will always transcend many other comic characters. He was right about that.

Hell....this boring and panned movie will make more than ant man. It's something we all absolutely expected. Doesn't that already prove his point

LOL at Reed Richards lecturing fucking anybody on anything. The man is a walking mass murder machine.
