Enter The Gungeon |OT| Praise the gun

What am I supposed to give the slime creature under the gate that sometimes shows up in the shop?

If you hold F on the keyboard you can drop your gun, and I think from the map menu you can drop passive items. He gives you money for dropping stuff.

I have seen that happen exactly once in maybe 20 runs.

Weird, I only had a chance to play one run yesterday and picked the Hunter, the dog found three or four different items after rooms and I only made it to the second floor. I got a key, two hearts, and maybe a chest but I'm not sure if those can just drop randomly in rooms. It was the first item drop I had and didn't notice the dog's digging animation until later.

Fun game but hate the sense of no progression if you die I hate restarting and redoing something without gaining anything. I thought Rogue Legacy did this better

The dog seems to be pretty random, sometimes he won't find anything, sometimes he finds stuff every couple rooms.
Found a Disintegrator gun, pretty awesome, if you can keep it concentrated on a boss he goes down quickly.
I really like the regular shotgun, seems pretty powerful and am having Doom flashbacks using it heh.

oh shit! thanks dude. this fucking game keeps having new things

it also has a SERIOUS case of "just one more run" syndrome. I know thats standard for rogue likes, but I usually dont like rogue likes, the last that gave me this feeling was rogue legacy (one of the few I loved)

edit: I still have 13(!) bosses left to uncover in the pause menu, granted some bosses count for 2 (the bullet twins use up 2 slots for example) but still, thats A LOT of bosses I havent seen yet O_o

I had no idea you could drop guns and passives to sell them at the shop!

Btw, what does the green currency thing you pick up after beating a boss actually do? Is it used to build up the Breach?

I love how the powerful guns send enemies flying. It's so satisfying

Northwest of entrance going into the Gungeon is a shop to use that currency if you rescued the NPCs needed.

Funny i check a gameplay video of the alpha, the bullet where SOOOO small i was like, this is ridiculous we can't see a thing....

Buy the full game, the bullet are now huge which make everything MUCH BETTER !!

Die at floor 2 because of a upgrade/Boost "sarcophagus" He had way to much HP. Great game so far.

you use it in the store in the upper left corner to unlock more guns and items to the pool of stuff that can drop or be in stores.

I was trying to figure out how to drop items, I don't think there was a default button for it if you're using a pad on PC lol. Or maybe it's one of the dpad ones. Whoops.

Anyway, the currency is for a shop you unlock.

After you rescue a certain NPC, they open up a shop in the Breach where you buy new items to add to the loot pool for chests and shopkeepers

I love the icon they gave this on PS4, it's the same as their twitter avatar:

Boom. Just won my first run. The final boss is hard, I had an item that
turned my dodge roll into a blink
which I'm not entirely sure I'd beat the boss without it, but I did it with one heart left. The ending is cool, although there's still much to do. :)

Here's my victory screen (spoilered just in case):

Bingo.

I liked the premise of BoI, but hated the gameplay and the overal tone of the game, EtG is indeed what you said.

Sort Off topic: I love how appearently it's normal around here not to really like BoI. In Steam saying anything bad about the game seems to be a crime.

I consider Isaac to be a really casual shmup roguelite. The game is so so luck based actually developing skills is secondary. The main focus of the fun is ending up with a really OP run 7/10 times. Unlike Nuclear Throne and (what it seems so far) Enter the Gungeon that you rely mostly on skill and less on RNG. (Although there seems to be some OP out of place weapons on EtG.

I think the best comparison between this and Isaac is the feedback. I enjoy Isaac, but the satisfication in that is seeing how crazy you can evolve your basic attack. But the attacks never feel satisfying, never feel like they have heft and weight; the enjoyment comes from the look of the stacked power-ups and how fast you can clear a room.

But here? Everything reacts. The satisfying screen shake and recoil. Dead enemies flying across the room. Smoke from bullet impacts against the wall. Book pages fluttering across the room. Shattered pottery, broken crates and tables, and other debris piling up, getting thrown around by explosions.

At least Mom's Knife doesn't have ammo and I have to revert back to the basic tear attack in the Womb.

I'm enjoying Gungeon though.

The books are so good. I love flipping a table covered in books. Why are books so fun to destroy in games?

I'm not even sure a comparison between them is fair, while they are pretty similar, in premise, they are actually very different games, with hugely different themes.

I'm not ragging on BoI, I just didn't get it, at all.

Maybe roguelikes are just not for me, but I hate starting off with that shitty default gun every time.

lol at a scroll that increases your attack speed when you flip tables :D

Where do bullet gramps and the black-haired woman hang out after you free them? I feel like I missed like an entire room in the base

Is there no online scoreboard or anything like that? Missed opportunity there, considering how well it works in NT...

Some people you rescue can be randomly found in shops selling their own stock. Sometimes they have their own rooms.

I loved the Binding of Isaac and I'm loving this as much if not even more so. I think the one thing I like is not having aiming limited to the 4 cardinal directions and being able to aim in full 360 degrees. That and the game is just a step up in a lot of ways like presentation, even the little intro videos unique to the different bosses is a nice touch.

I got one that activates free blanks every time you flip a table, it was pretty nuts. Wish I had some of the blank powerups that run to synergize it with.

And there's one that slows down time and increases the amount of projectiles fired when flipping tables.

I'm enjoying this, but the first chamber is very unsatisfying. It's too long and feels too much like a chore. Sometimes you even reach the boss without a gun, which means you're going to be fleeing and dodging for two minutes because the starter gun does no damage and has long reload times.

Not a big fan of the music either, it doesn't give you any sense of urgency (well, nothing in the game does so far).

The graphics, the guns and the bullet hell aspects are much better than in NT though.

The difficulty level is similar, or this is probably harder.
The combat feels really different though, but I think that if you dig HM, you might like this one as well.
Sweet. I bought it and it's been a blast so far. I wish the local co-op let you choose another gungeoneer though.

How do you open that big locked gate with a woman behind it?

Link
is the best random person that can show up. Its basically a free item because im always clearing every floor anyway

Did you play BoI: Rebirth? They certainly play differently and don't share any of the same atmosphere, but they are heavily similar in a lot of the design and overall game structure. It would be practically ignorant to say there's not some valid comparisons to be made there. I'm not saying that's good or bad at all, but there's interesting discussion to be had.

Personally I really enjoyed Rebirth but totally understand the valid complaints and criticism it gets levied against it. That's why this game having a new take on that same Zelda dungeon - rogue-like architecture is so exciting imo.

Ignorant is a bit harsh, but anyway, yes, I played Rebirth on the PS4, I just think it's a little bit lazy to compare the two in the same breath, there are a few massive differences between them that really change the game, it's like comparing a Ferrari to a Mini because it happens to have 4 wheels.

The roguelike / random loot system is very similar, but a lot of games have very similar systems.

I just think they are more differences than similarities, I would imagine the developers were inspired by BoI, but it is (IMO) about as far as you can get from BoI while still maintaining the room based roguelike structure.

I'm almost always making it to the 3rd floor but I'm still having so much trouble with the
ammoconda
. The other two 2nd floor bosses are much easier imo.

How does the dog work? I'm in a room where he's barking. That's not the same as finding an item right? Is that where he digs?

edit - nm, I should've known what it meant lol.

why does this game seem to never want to give me any keys?

like wtf 2 chests on every floor, 0 key drops ok I'll buy one from the shop.. no keys for sale..
once I got a passive item that gave me a higher chance of getting keys upon clearing a room... went through two and a half floors with that item and still no key drops

come the fuck on

oooh saved a couple of guys that give you
quests in the hub. first is to kill 200 bullet men. they say they have trinkets to reward me, permanent upgrades maybe?

This is one of the biggest problems. Not having keys kills runs and it happens way too often. I really hope they increase the drop rate or always make them available in the shop. Or make it so more unlocked chests appear. It's such a bummer getting 20 minutes into a run and having nothing to show for it. These types of games are so dependent on progression and feeling more powerful the further you get into a run. If you remove that it saps a lot of the fun out of it. Playing as the Pilot helps, with his lockpick and passive ability, but his gun sucks ass and is no fun to use. He's great in the long run though since you'll have acquired a lot of cool stuff.

Ok so I just unlocked
a lady and a giant robot who opened a shop in my overworld area
but Im not exactly sure what they do.

It says I can
buy things to add to my museum?

Can someone explain this to me?

Basically you use credits dropped from bosses to buy shit to find in the dungeon.

This Steam post illustrates very well what is wrong with the early game

Man, had a room that had those minecarts, but they're on invisible tracks. Ended up losing like 2 hearts trying to figure it out, because I'm sure that room had the cell key for another NPC :(

This echoes my feelings to some extent. I have only played two hours of Gungeon, so I am scratching the surface and I do like it, and I mean really like it, but Isaacs progression grip is a lot tighter. In Binding... you're beginning to unlock items even in the first hours und will be doing so for hundreds after. That is the benchmark. I don't get the Isaac hate here. Maybe I am a fanboy since I dropped 400 hours in both McMillen games. Rogue Legacy and Isaac are pearless in the aspect of locking you in a rhythm of defeat and meta progression. Gungeon is a bit more obscure and in the first hours I feel a lot of defeat. I only made it to level 2 and had nothing to show for doing so. Besides of getting a bit better at it.
Still can't figure out a good button for the blanks. In hectic situations I am pushing the sticks down by accident.

I read on the first page the there were some concerns about performance on PS4 because it was a Unity game.

I don't feel like reading 10 pages to see if anyone tested this, so how does this run on PS4?
