PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Can it be beaten without dying?
Joking, it's doable with only 2 continues right?

i think it's possible to do a no death run. i'm not as good as figuring out patterns but i'm pretty sure you can do it. so far, i've been regularly getting to stage six w/o dying or continuing once.

Target Earth isn't very long, only like 40 minutes or so. I came pretty close to beating it without dying (only had one stupid death in the last level), so it's definitely 1LCable without a lot of effort. No idea what the two harder difficulty settings change exactly, or how much harder they make the game.

Maybe on normal it's possible. Is it a long game as well?
i definately think you can do seeing how you played shatter hand and AOF 2

you sir are skilled.

I've recently gotten into playing my PS2 again, especially retro compilations.

I already have both volumes of Capcom Essentials, Taito Legends Vol. 2, and Midway Arcade Treasures Vol. 1.

I'll grab Taito Vol. 1 and the other volumes of the Midway collections when I find them complete for the right price.

So I've got two questions. Are there any other good compilations too look out for? I'll probably get the Atari and Sega collections later on.

I have a US PS2 and haven't found a good (non-swap magic) way of making it region free. That market seems to be dead. So keep things playable in this region.

Also, are there any good options for an arcade stick that still exist for the PS2. I'm not really into fighters, but it would be nice to complete the classic arcade experience.

Lots of good SNK collections on PS2. The main SNK collection and assorted fighting game compilations, though not what you're looking for. At least check out the main one.

Mega Man and Mega Man X collections

Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 29: Monster World Complete Collection
Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 32: Phantasy Star Complete Collection

Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 32: Phantasy Star Complete Collection

The Monster World Collection is great, contains awesom Master System game 'Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap' in full English too.

Just played 007 quantum of solace and it's neat. I knew eurocom did it, but had no idea it scored higher reviews than the Treyarch version.

Fun and only like 3 hours too.

Is it a completely different game? I rather enjoyed the 360 one as a rental back in the day. Also, I see there's a Wii version, I wonder if that's the Eurocom or Treyarch one.

Yeah it's in third person like Everything or Nothing and From Russia With Love.

that's a shame, the "2500" in the title actually stood for their retail price in yen back when they were new

They were a big reason why I bought a region-free Test PS2. But I don't really want them now. I don't have many other non-US PS2 games I want. Been thinking about selling it for a regular slim.

How much does it go for? The SEGA Ages games are so damn expensive.

Was talking about regular Wonderboy 3 on Master System. His post made it seem like it only ever was translated for this pack, so i tried to add that it actually was translated way before - but in doing so made even more confusion i guess :)

Traded a spice orange gamecube for some ps2/psp goodness. Grandia 3 is sealed which i wasn't expecting.

Now to clean off all the old stickers when I get some time. I HATE doing this.

I used to be very up to date on my sticker removal, but I haven't been gung ho about it for a decade now. :(

I bet I have well over 100 games to remove stickers from....

Yeah, I have completely lost motivation for this too. So much other stuff you have to do with these old games already (like playing them).

So now Kuon is just really expensive? When did that happen?

Knew I should've grabbed it when I saw it at HPB a couple months ago.

Those awful stickers are the main reason I avoid buying NTSC-U games. PawnStop has just completely ruined them for me.
I don't know what happens with Game Stop in the US, but here in Italy they used to apply the same horrid stickers on the instruction booklets too. Evil incarnate for an entire generation of collectors. :D

I didn't know that it is a completely different game. Great to hear it as I really like TPP Bond games. I have to buy this one then! Does anybody know how it looks on LCD? Is it widescreen or 480p? I'm interested in PAL version.

Since last Halloween I noticed some horror games have risen in price like Rule of Rose which now apparently sells for $200+ and Haunting Ground which is going for $80-$90.

Rule of Rose is the weirdest case to me, they show up consistently and I don´t think it is that rare. If people stopped paying insane prices, I´m sure prices would drop.

Anyway, I´d love to add them to my collection even if they aren´t the great games some people make it up to be, but I can´t afford these prices, sadly.

The other day I was thinking, Atlus reprinted Nocturne, DDS and Devil Summoner games so much they are now cheap as hell to buy, why not reprint a game like Rule of Rose? They´d sell a small batch easily if priced at $30~$50.

Last few pick ups were pretty weak but only cost me £1.50
Driver 3.... Utter gash but hilarious
Quake 3 revolution need to compare with Dreamcast version
Rogue Trooper 2000ad run and gun

Thanks heaps to all the people who gave me game recommendations on the page before, really appreciate it.

So far my PS2 collection is:

- Haunting Grounds
- Rogue Galaxy
- Shadow Hearts: From the New World
- Steambot Chronicles
- Valkyrie Profile 2
- Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution

I actually got three of these (Shadow Hearts, Valkyrie Profile 2 and Haunting Grounds) brand new - I was surprised there are still brand new PS2 games out in the wild.

Being in PAL territory, though, I've sadly only been able to enjoy 480p progressive scan with Haunting Grounds. We have a smaller list of compatible titles compared to NTSC regions.

Now - is God Hand and The Bouncer worth it for $40 (AUD)?

After these two, my next targets are:

- Evergrace
- King's Field IV
- Kuon
- Shadow of Rome
- Suikoden III and V
- Urban Reign

PS2 with bonus PSX collection! there's a fair number of manual-less ones with nice covers printed, because when gamestop was liquidating them for like pennies a few years ago, i mopped up, haha. #noragrets

Wow that's an awesome collection. Makes me sad about our boring PAL covers.

Makes me sad about our boring PAL covers.

Eh, I'd say it's a matter of taste. I actually prefer our covers since the NA ones are, to me, rather garish on occasion and when you put them all together on a shelf it makes it hard to identify a game with just a quick glance, unless you have memorized all the color patterns instead of speed reading.

Actually looks like it went back up again. There was a couple month period where the game dropped pretty significantly. Think some new copies were introduced. Guess they got bought up. My bad.

Wasn't trying to disprove you, I would buy a sealed one if you knew of a source at that price :) Thanks though.
