Dirt Rally |OT| Don’t Cut, Be Brave

I don't understand how the AI works in this game. I played the Rally Cross Classic championship on professional difficulty and finished three of the four events in the top three. Now in the fourth event I can't even qualify. I've tried for more than two hours now and I can't do it. It's like the game wants me to repeat the season.

Really frustrating.

The game asumes that with more time spent driving you get better at it and if you qualify top 3 moves you to the next difficulty. Now if that one is too hard well then that is the end of the career for you right there. There is little point in going above what you can manage. Just abandon the championship and get de-ranked.

Really loving this game. I am super bad at it, that said I totally get the Dark Souls comparisons honestly: hard but fair.

Really love the daily and weekly events, could see myself hopping on just to finish those (scratches a great itch)

Applied for the Neogaf PS4 league for some more fun.

I just joined signed up for Racenet and joined the GAF league. How do I do the event?

Nm, I found it.

And there are no restarts... oh well. Next time.

I like the idea of turning the hud off,but do you still get split times ??

No m8, but they were really distracting me. I dont need to see a red bar in the middle of my screen to distract me and tell me im a few secs behind.. Id rather be 100% focussing on the road and my co-driver.

Im sure it will help, you dont need split times anyway :P.

Was trying to get used to no assists on PS4 last night. It's a feeling that I find hard to describe. It's like I've never felt so in control of a car, but barely having any control before in my life. The second track of the career mode was insane. "Argolis, Greece Stage 2: Koryfi Dafni" It starts off simple but before you know it you're racing on the side of a cliff DOWNHILL. Even with the 60's cars the experience is next to nothing. Incredible sense of speed and edge of your seat focus to make it through a race.

Yup, that's the one, but you should join right away even if you are new to the game, it's fun even if you are bad at it.

Middle of the crest over big jump!

Hard to see but the right front was already gone. I was trying to limp to the end but then said eh! Lets take this jump lol.

EDIT:

I am reposting from earlier in the thread:

To anyone who hasn't done this I at least recommend trying it. The difference is HUGE! I thought it would bother me not being able to see how far along the course I had progressed, split times, etc, but in reality it just allowed me to keep my focus on my driving and only that at all times. It wasn't until I did this that I finally got the improvement I was looking for. Good stuff.

Just tried this for the first time and i have a quick question: is there a practise mode? When i started the game, it seems there was with the mini but i quit the game and when i returned, i was thrown into the career mode and i can't find the practise mode anymore?

Also, any thoughts on manual versus automatic transmission for controller users?

First impressions after playing for a very short time: wow, i'm genuinely impressed!

It wasn't just flat... the entire rim was gone!

There is no practice mode but in the main menu you can do custom events that will give you all the options

Would / should a sequel to Dirt Rally have procedural track generation?

It occurred to me tonight that rallying should not be a case of having driven that stage many times before, but should be how fast can you go whilst relying on your co-drivers instructions, your reading of the road and your driving skill. Having a limited number of stages however will mean that over time people will learn the nuances to each track and this will have a bigger bearing on finishing positions rather than the points I mention earlier - if they could nail procedural track generation however it would keep every rally fresh and be more representative of the real sport...

It is confirmed that Monaco won't ever get soft snowbanks? They said in November 12 road book that they will be added after 1.0, but we haven't heard about them since.

sorry folks. dropped off the map for a few days. haven't even had a chance to play for almost a week now!

so the xbone league is behind. ill try and set up an event soon if people are still interested. ill probably just continue with slower cars for another round or two before stepping up to the 70's cars.

if someone wants to make another xbox league and keep up with the PC/PS4 league, feel free to do so. or i could just give someone admin privieleges on the lague thats already set up if they want.

It could, but I am not sure it should.

I reckon you might just get a lot of junk tracks, without any flow, just look at a track like Bidno Moorland to see how well a track can flow, I doubt you'd get a track with anywhere near as good a flow that was proc-gen.

Yeah,as everyone said, todays daily event was a lot of fun, which brings me onto the GrB cars, what's everyones favourite?, I am swinging between the RS200 and Delta S4.

I had a go at the weekly event this morning, didn't do too bad, 91st out of 2153 entries so far, think I am slowly improving!

Now I want this game. Couldn't you have just told me about it when it was already out?
Still accepting beta applications: Rush Rally 2

I should add that the user can't currently generate tracks at will.

Rush Rally 2 mostly generates the scenery. The road itself is optionally generated, for most the road path splines have been hand generated (some traced from Google maps) or at the very least hand tuned. As with anything procedurally generated it is as good as the effort put into the algorithm.

Well, yeah, obviously, depends how proc gen your proc gen is, how detailed your track sections are, and how they tessellate together, I still reckon, with a game like Dirt Rally, it would take a lot of time and effort to be able to consistently proc gen decent tracks.

I've just been playing the very begging of my career starting with the Mini. The game is excellent, takes me back to Colin Mcrae; Dirt back in 2007 (woah) - but feels like a true successor, not what Dirt 2/3 did to broaden sales. I'm hoping the career broadens though (I've gone in blind), just playing a few point-to-point races. Also, game is easy to control, when you listen carefully to your co-driver.

Have a look at the end of the thread I linked to see his Pikes Peak. Road from map data, scenery generated.

Question -

I'm playing with DS4 on PC and the steering wheel goes through ranges in the option screen.
That said, throttle (R2) and break (L2) go not through whole range, depending on press - but from zero and full, nothing middle.
Anyone had similar trouble? Also need to remap buttons for DS4 every time I play.

EDIT: Plugged 360 wired in and everything was set, throttle and break go through ranges and everything is mapped from the get go.
360 wired it is then. Hope rumble works too.

No problem! And going at your own pace is fine, when you feel like stepping up we could maybe run alongside PC/PS4 leagues too :)

so dumb question but does the PS4 leagues times/points carry over from week to week?

I got roped into Ratchet and Clank so Ive effed up my season if so

For now, no. Each week is a different season to the game as it takes a lot more planning to daisy chain the events.. or that's my excuse for just not having co-ordinated it with Danowat yet.

We'll look into it for next week.

I 'think' the reason the points didn't carry over is because I ended last weeks event early, and thus didn't finish, so no points awarded?, I'd assume that when this one finishes, and I add a new event the league table should populate with points from the finishing positions of this weeks event?

Nope, you have to daisychain it IMO, since you start by creating a Season and you set Events/Stages next. We set 1 event last time :)

After playing Project Cars, Asseto Corsetta, and GT6 with the T300, Dirt Rally is the only game that actually feels close to what a car should feel like. GT6 is second and Project Cars is by far the worst.
