Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

Why did the PS4 not ship like this in the first place?

Cerny needed a rough draft in place first?

There's no way they could have hit that spec and kept the price at the point they wanted.

Sony are stuck with what they can do with the PS4.5 (just like Microsoft will be with their upgraded Xbox One). Games are so optimised nowadays, you can't change the architecture at all without completely breaking the back catalogue of games and apps.

All you can do is speed up the previous CPU/GPU combo and maybe add a few more bells and whistles on. But the CPU/GPU must be fundamentally the same as the PS4's.

The implications for the future of gaming consoles being a phone like upgrade every three years ( incremental at best even, looking at these supposed specs ) is not something Im cool with. Id rather go PC at that point.

It wouldnt benefit the consuner either. Because right now you could do 5-6 years with your console and games would be tailored to that.

Now youll have some wonkey ass framey versions on the old regular ass ps4, while the neo runs it at 50fps unlocked for instance.

Oh look, someone didn't read the article...

This thread is funny.

In the other NEO/PS4K threads some of the bigger issues were:

Split the userbase
Dev issues
OG unit becoming a poor relation

This GB leak seems to address all three of these points, and yet people are still raising them as issues.

Help me here.

This 'leak' seems so relevant to those issues that I can't ignore the idea this is a controlled leak.

I'm not a huge techhead and don't really know how the GPU/Memory bandwith will compare so correct me if I'm wrong but the CPU while not a good one is still a pretty big jump compared to the old one despite some comments here. 500mhz jump for 8 core does wonders for what used to be a very dissapointing CPU even if the new GPU stays bottlenecked, no?.

Actually, I totally forgot Bloodborne is an exclusive. Perhaps it is possible. However, I doubt any third party would go back and do the same.

Yep. Expect maybe those who have still a big user base and get regular updates, like GTA V maybe. Multi-players games still active like Battlefront (season pass end at the beginning of 2017) could use that too. But for most of the release of 2013-2016, no.

This 'leak' seems so relevant to those issues that I can't ignore the idea this is a controlled leak.

This makes no sense from a PR perspective, but why not.

It seems as a nice controlled "leak" so far. Very nice wording as if it poses no problems or issues whatsoever. Austin writes it as if its not a negative thing either.

It sets a scary precedent.

Definitive ? No, the "definitive" VR experience will come with the PSVR2, in 2019. So the Neo_PS4 owners will got punched.

or maybe with PSVR2.5 and PS5. I don't know.
Maybe so.

Can't be easy for those who usually wait a few years until jumping in on a new generation.
Day 1: Do I get one now or wait for the upgrade which comes 3 years later?
Day 3 years later: Do I get one now or wait for the next gen which comes 3 years later?
Day next gen: Do I get one now or wait for the upgrade which comes 3 years later?
Day next gen 3 years later: Do I get one now or wait for the next gen which comes 3 years later?
Etc :P

This is how you bring your own castle down. I've happily bought every single Playstation day 1 but this is the one which will end all that. I'll vote with my wallet on this nonsense and stay far far away from all of this.

I just wish i could understand why.

1. PS4 is selling fantastically well, making the entire Sony company turn their eyes to them, system is making profit. They are smashing their competition everywhere despite any change they tried or try to make.

2. Who asked for this? There is probably a proportion of a 1 gazillion to 1 of people who asks for freaking Folders on the system instead of a upgraded PS4 at this point.

Is this a reaction move because Microsoft is doing it? Or because NX might be more powerful? If so, they openly said they don't understand the reason PS4 was so successfull, and seems like they still don't.

Why does Apple make a new iPhone every year when the old ones are still selling well and making a profit? Why did Nintendo make a new 3DS?

Because there is a market for people who want to upgrade to something better. Because selling new hardware means more sales and more profit. Nobody "asked" for a new PS4... because most people didn't even ponder the possibility of it ever happening.

Yeah.

I've been very anti ps4k for those exact reasons, but this info has alleviated some of my fears. Still not 100% on board, but definitely feel better about the whole situation.

Sounds like a pretty useless upgrade, tbh. I'm not going to feel compelled in the slightest to get the PS4K. Good news for my wallet, though.

I could see MS launching a Xbox One Slim this year and wait till next year for an upgraded Xbox One. Phil Spencer has stated that he expects if they do it, it's going to be a big jump

Whether or not it's a big jump, or if it even happens, they are not going to jump to completely different CPU/GPU architectures unless it's a totally new generation. If they do upgrade it will be within the same product families.

My only real disappointment with this is I'll have thoroughly beaten FFXV by the time the NEO is out. =(

Still Day 1, whatever.

People will just find a new boogeyman because they don't like this idea. Not realizing based on all the points you just made. Nothing changes at all. Their OG PS4 will be just fine.

I'm going to buy this because I really feel like I don't "lose" anything. Expect maybe $400 bucks.

Everybody wants to be Apple lol.

I'm fine with consoles going down the direction of constantly upgrading hardware, even if one day it makes console as expensive as a high-end PC, I will still prefer consoles over gaming PC.

The hyperbole in here damn. Not like your PS4s are going to become useless guys.

So you don't think Sony's going to be pushing you to spend money on the upgrade at all? You don't think games going forward are going to be incentivized to favor the Playstation Neo? Do you actually think Sony's just going to put this out there and be totally fine if nobody actually buys it because it's not necessary?

If it's just stuff like DS3 running at solid 30fps or Yakuza 0 with no screen tearing, then this is a nothing upgrade. I really want to see a Digital Foundry video comparing the two when it comes out. Only then can we (more so I) make a clear cut judgement on whether or not it's worth the upgrade.

Edit: KOFXIV should be a launch title.

To combat a 3 year cycle on consoles you will convert to a platform where new hardware comes out on a yearly basis.

why are you asking leading questions when they're answered in the article

The NEO will not supplant the current PS4, but will exist alongside of it and use the same user environment. The PS4 and NEO will use the same PSN store, connect to the same online communities, and offer the same user experience, so expect to see the same cross media bar that you’re used to. Players will be able to retain all of the purchases they made on the PS4.

Sony seems committed to keeping the NEO and the original PS4 player bases connected. As such, there will be no NEO-only games, and Sony will not let developers separate NEO users from original PS4 players while playing on PSN. Likewise, Sony explicitly and repeatedly states that developers cannot offer exclusive gameplay options or special unlockables for NEO players—so don’t expect NEO owners to get a level editor or a special Rocket League car that you won’t have access to on your original PS4.

I guess some people will have to device, PSVR or PS4K. Somehow it makes me distrust the performance of PS4 PSVR games.
Considering how much is leaking this project, I don't see much difficult for MS to release latera better product, especially considering it already has W10 on it's console.
Also, I don't think developer having trouble developing for two nearly identical consoles, in PC that's a problem because there area lot of variables and this isn't the case.

No, if you read the article it covers all that.

No Polaris!? Dangit man, NX is going to be Wii U Part 2 isn't it? I got my Wii U all boxed up for when they announce it so I can trade it in at Gamestop, but now I don't know. :(

From Emily Rogers

Here is what multiple sources close to Nintendo are telling me about 10k’s hardware rumors: The gimmick is made up. GPU is wrong. Power level is wrong.” “The specs on NX are good, but a lot of the information being shared in this thread is incorrect.

I was told that NX has good specs, but the info in this thread on the GPU and power level is just not correct. Sorry to burst everyone’s hype.

PS4 Neo settings: locked 30fps, 1080p, good AA and AO, smooth shadows and longer draw distance

PSPoor settings: 20-30fps, dynamic resolution, low AA, jaggy shadows, more noticeable pop-in

Slightly higher clock speed, a better GPU yes. Did the PS4 really need more memory bandwidth though? And is a %10 upjerk gonna do anything worthwhile?
CPU is 31% faster
GPU has 100% increase in CUs, and runs 14% faster
Memory bandwidth increased 24%

I don't know much of anything about GPUs but CUs seem important and now there's double the amount. So 30 to 60fps may be possible but I don't really see native 4K inbound with these specs

At this point I'm more interested in knowing if 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc support will be included in the new model.
Rumors suggest as much, and based on Sony's lack of player that I know of, this may very well be it which would destroy that market. Like for the same price you could buy a Samsung UHD player or buy the PS4K that plays PS4 games. My guess is that if the UHD disc specs and latest HDMI were finalized before PS4 went into production then this PS4K would not have been a thing.

60fps or bust. IDC about 4k

100-120 FPS 1080p should be obligatory if the offer a 4K 30fps version already IMO.

I don't know much of anything about GPUs but CUs seem important and now there's double the amount. So 30 to 60fps may be possible but I don't really see native 4K inbound with these specs

IIRC CU's on apus mostly fill the same purpose as texture units for dedicated gpus.

If NX is more powerful than OG PS4, I guess a lot of people, myself included, would likely switch to NX for their multiplatform needs. If NEO is more powerful than NX, that at least "stops the bleeding". I guess Sony recognizes that their power advantage is significant in an age where all consoles are pretty much the same, and first party output is lacking all around.

hahahahaha this guy

Guess you don't own an up to date smartphone of any kind then. If you do I hope you're still on the valium you must have needed when making the decision...

This makes no sense from a PR perspective, but why not.

The rumours are clearly not going to go away and the improvements are now widely accepted so Sony would have to just plug into that rumour. The fact this has addressed every concern just feels well timed.

The CPU still will probably be bottle necking pos. Requirement to hit 60 depends a lot on CPU.

I'm very disappointed with the CPU though. Not really a big upgrade when even the original ps4's CPU was very mediocre specswise when it was released.

Devs would be better off using the extra compute units to offload more of the CPU load vs trying to increase extra effects. We have already heard devs are doing this now due to CPU constraints.

Maybe Sony figures this is the best way to go. As someone earlier said I don't think Jaguar CPUs could clock up to the 3.X GHz that people wanted anyways and remain stable. Instead you get a modest CPU clock speed bumb along with 18 extra CUs which could help to offload shit to the GPU in GPGPU processes.

Nah man your games will run GREAT on your old Ps4 but the NEO man the NEO has all the right stuff. REAL 60FPS 1080P. Make no wordies gaming community and buy our new 399 product because hey why the fuck not? Instead of OPTIMIZING for PS4 we'll just increase the shit because it cant run 1080p 60fps right now with great graphics, and we promised that when we announced PS4.

/s.
