Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

There still are barely any. Bloodborne is the only one so far I personally needed to buy. This year has Uncharted 4, The Last Kingdom... what else?

Horizone Zero Dawn
Ratchet and Clank
Gran Turismo Sport
Gravity Rush 2
Drawn to Death
The Tomorrow Children

and a few others that I don't feel like listing.

It still has Jaguar for the CPU huh? Ouch.

Its still PS4. And PS4 is defined by being weak CPU wise and stronger GPU wise. Now the GPU to CPU disparity is even more significant..aka even more like PS4 than even the PS4 was...you get it?

Even funnier is how people in the PS4k thread were talking about dual-GPUs.

Only MisterX surrogates were even thinking that was in the realm of possibility. This was clearly spurred on by the 16nm shrink doing far more than anticipated. I want to see what an OG PS4 slim looks like

We can't even begin to have that discussion because AMD GPU's and Nvidia GPU's are nothing alike. On top of all this- this GPU probably has a ton of customizations that Sony has been cuing developers in on for the last three years. Don't expect this just to just be some vanilla 380X thrown into a box because NewEgg had a sale.

You can say this, but it doesn't stop the original PS4 from performing pretty close to the vanilla HD7870 I got a few years ago because Newegg had a sale.

So sony is going to force every dev/pub that wants to release a ps4 game to make a neo mode for it. Isn't something like this a little authoritarian for a company like sony?

The Neo?

I see Khalifa Jayy is working at Sony now.

Devs will want to do this because the eye candy factor and pure competition. Can't let other devs release the prettier 4K games while you get left behind

I'm going to out on a limb here...

Neo is there to tide the hardcore & PSVR crowd over until Sony/AMD have a Zen/Polaris APU with HBM2 down to $399 retail with a small loss on hardware per unit (per the PS4 and 'People need to buy 2 games to make it profitable' at launch).

I'd guess that such a unit would currently be in the $800 range and obviously doesn't exist yet as Polaris cards are HBM1, bit hopefully people see the wood from the trees in this post...

I'm guessing this will take the current gen into 2018/19 territory.

If NX is more powerful than OG PS4, I guess a lot of people, myself included, would likely switch to NX for their multiplatform needs. If NEO is more powerful than NX, that at least "stops the bleeding". I guess Sony recognizes that their power advantage is significant in an age where all consoles are pretty much the same, and first party output is lacking all around.

you seriously think people are gonna all of sudden sell their ps4s to play the next cod on nx?

I am so, so happy I got rid of my PS4.

Rumors sound like this thing has potential. All I need is a good price, and hopefully a forward-thinking design that fixes everything wrong with the PS4, for any even better console experience.

Dual GPUs is such bullshit, and there's no reason for it.

Double the number of Compute Units / Streaming Processors inside the GPU, up the clockspeed. Done.

Sony also couldn't radically change much about the hardware, as certain games use GMNX and code down to the register level.

Why are we thinking this is a new GPU in the 300 family? I would have thought it was still based on the Sea islands GPU architecture but with double the CU's for maximum compatibility

This for the same reason they rolled with the Jaguar. It allows easy(er) compatibility by just adding in more CUs and upping the clock vs moving up a family.

I hope the design is very similar to the PS4 so my wife won't notice that I bought one

Husband: "Hey, honey. How's it going?"

Wife: "It's going great.... Am I going crazy but is our PS4... looking different than normal?"

Husband: "No! N--n-n-n-no..... It's the same ol' PS4 I bought months ago."

Wife: "I'm not dumb. I found the receipt for a PS4K on the table."

Husband: "Ummmm. Lemme explain..."

Devs are gonna fucking hate this, forcing them to optimize their game for another machine.

They won't. Someone is going to get fucked good here. The OG PS4 people, or the Neo people. Developers may want to stick to what they know and optimize for OG PS4 only and give Neo some dogshit port. Or, they'll fall in love with the slightly more powerful system and OG PS4 owners will be left with the garbage version. I think this could possibly just make some developers more lazy than they already are.

Yeah, I basically said as much. Didn't stop the discussion from being hilarious though.

What would make a port to the Neo "dogshit?" They only bump up the resolution and improve some graphical effects? That's what they made it for.

Both Sony and MS are in cahoots. Console gaming can only survive if there are multiple gaming platforms. Count on MS to have a response to the PS4K.
Both used same cpu, gpu are same generation one is just more powerful, both 8gb ram with one using faster ram, the shell for the system itself having a matte/glossy side for both. A lot of similarities.

You can't stop the story there. What comes next? Is it the sex!?

This is just like my Japanese animes.

Fuck man, I like to be there at launch for all of Sony's gaming stuff. I already have PSVR preordered. I can't throw down another 400. I hate this :(

BTW could CPU specs not be locked down just yet? Sony managed to pull a fast one and put in 8 GDDR5 the last second.

Switching CPU Arch's would mean more compatibility hurdles. Maybe the clock speed isn't locked down yet, but does anyone even know how much higher jags can go without becoming unstable?

I don't think AAA games will run in 4k. Were also talking about a product with zero install base so far. No one knows how it will sell.
To me it looks like sony is leveraging their market share dominance by forcing devs/pubs to support their new product.

Question for the software devs here. How hard would it be for devs to develop and optimize for the OG PS4 (which would typically be something like 1080p 30 fps).. and then unlock it to 1080p 60 fps

They may not care to bother with it. The only real benefit I see here is for Sony's first party studios. They will likely be forced to optimize for both.

Fair point. Change devs to pubs, then.

Sony seems very confident that publishers will willingly extend themselves for an upgraded console, and have to spend additional resources creating two different modes for each game.

I would imagine Sony went to all the major publishers to get their opinions before deciding to move ahead with this. I think they've learned their lessons with the PS3. The PS4 was designed with much feedback from the devs. So I doubt they would just ignore their feedback this time around with the Neo.
