Giant Bomb: PS4.5 / PS4K is codenamed NEO, more info

As a PC player with a 980ti I can't stand shit posts like this. Some people don't fucking care about PC. Get over it.

I am one of those people but if I have to upgrade again two years down the line again then all of a sudden I was forced into caring because consoles no longer exist.

Is there any consensus on where this GPU falls in real world performance yet? I'm seeing 390 and 380 being thrown up a lot but there's a big difference between those two cards.

It's basically the "updated" 280X (Tahiti XTL).

For comparison, the PS4 is basically a 270 with a weak CPU.

Even if ntkrnl doesn't "know" specifics him and Matt in this thread is a good thing.

Yep both good people. We just need a wild Shinobi to show up to make everything complete

Ah yeah and Verendus as well he's a cool cat as well. Throw in GopherD too. Let's just make this shit crazy

How Matt currently feels reading these ridiculous posts:

I have seriously $748 in GameStop credit, make that $848 if I trade in an iPad mini I don't use anymore. hehe

I can buy this and NX no problemo. Not even spend a dime.

But seriously this doesn't seem like that big of a deal in terms of spec bumps. Can tech gaf elaborate on how this will improve games?

40 million and growing userbase. You really expect EA to cry so much about a minimal SKU testing effort that they would cut Sony off to any big degree?

Considering how broken their games have been with normal testing on one sku? Yes.

But I use EA and Activision as examples because they have weight they can throw around. What happens when someone like Atlus or Capcom release a game and the NEO mode simply doesn't work or doesn't pass cert?

Again, this is good for Sony, but I bet in 6 months time after the neo's release, their relationship with a lot of devs will be a lot more strained than it is now.

This is a crazy thing to say when these specs are over 3X the power of the Xbox One GPU so you could do Xbox One level graphics at 4K with a few tricks

Why are we freaking out over someone saying neat, i need someone to fill me in.

As others have written, they were pretty much the most prolific and accurate leaker GAF has ever seen. In the space of 24 hours, totally out-of-the-blue, they disclosed all of MS's plans and announcements for their year and E3, and also detailed a fair bit of future stuff.

It was all particularly significant as it was early in the X1's life, and it still carried its reveal stigma.

Bought day 1 ps4, day 1 Xbox one. Got a 4K tv this year and now that 4K is quickly becoming a standard, I will but this and an Xbox 1.5 if they better support my tvs format.

The more cynical part of me wants to say we haven't heard much about MS' device because they aren't communicating as much with devs.

That's actually somewhat confusing for me. Digital Foundry said that most devs did not know about it and even some high level people at Sony didn't. But if they need to have profiles ready this October, then you would think this would already be in most devs hands, or it's really damn easy to do profiles for it.

Does this mean horizo zero dawn cold run at 60fps on neo? Sorry i'm not a tech person so i don't know how big a leap this is.

We don't know yet, but based on it being open world the fps is probably CPU bound, in which case if it's running at around 45 on the regular PS4 it would hit 60fps on Neo. Until we know the specifics and how they're planning on optimizing we can't say for sure though. Frame rate is largely going to be on a case by case basis though I personally think a jump from 30fps to 60fps is going to be a thing for very few open world games.

Microsoft should just take this beating. Don't release a more powerful XB1. There is NOTHING they can do to catch the PS4. Sony releasing another more powerful machine only hurts XB1 chances further. Bring out a true next generation console next year or the year after and surprise everyone, including Sony.

I'm at work so I can't read through the thread.

Based on the specs I saw, if this thing is $399 it's not really worth it, is it? I definitely would buy one if the change was substantial enough but I don't see it here. Is that fair?

And I do own a PS4 already.

And they can't play the same game, why?

But of course, that's only if they make NEO mode worthwhile. The negative side of me thinks that neo mode is going to be little more than games at 1080p with an uncapped framerate that hits a minimum of 30. If it hits 60, great. But most games will probably hover at an inconstant 45-50, which isn't really helping anyone.
What about if Sony supports Freesync. Amd has gotten it to work over HDMI. Of course, you'd need a TV or monitor with adaptive sync support.

What in the...? To run 720p with all possible compression used, you'd need something like 380GB/s framebuffer bandwidth. That is not present in this console. Peak is 224 for GDDR5. GDDR5X gets 384.

If an Xbone at 1.3TFLOPS is running a game at 720p (921,600 pixels), the PS4k at 4.2TLOPS will not be able to run it at 4k (8,294,400 pixels). While resolution isn't the only factor in performance, that's still a 9 times increase in resolution.

What is "all possible compression?"

Regardless, a 380x only has 182gb/s max bandwith and only has 32 cus close to the rumored ps4.5 specs, and it can run 4k 30 fps at decent settings depending on the title. If a ps4 can run an Xbox game at 1080p, things can be adjusted to run stuff on a ps4.5 at 4k 30fps, provided this is a 4tflop part as it would seem to be. An optimized console set up at 4k 30 fps isn't the same thing as a 380x either.

I hope Microsoft does this. Matching even the Neo would be a mistake. Xbox needs to overtake them, that would make things real interesting.

Considering how broken their games have been with normal testing on one sku? Yes.

What broken games from EA? Have I missed something?

And no, because EA support IOS, Android, last gen consoles and the PC which all require similar levels of testing.

2.) Who says it would be every year?
Who says it doesn't?
Nobody thought PS4 would only last 3 years before an upgrade was available. How do we know this one will last even 3 years? Updating the hardware every year is standard practise in many segments of the electronics industry where Sony is a major contributor. If this 3 years before upgrade idea is successful I wouldn't rule out faster upgrades. I'd say that it all depends on how the market reacts to this.

This will be good for Sony come

Seriously makes me wonder what happens when someone like Activision of EA says "we don't want to support this NEO mode, we don't have time, so we're not gonna, and if you really don't like it, we just won't come back next time around."

That ain't happening, developers already take advantage of pc extra power compared to consoles, you think developers are not gonna take advantage of ps4k which will have potential to sell way units then a pc which has thousands of configurations.

The classic idea of a console generation is done. Microsoft will be bringing an updated Xbox out and everything moving forward will be backwards compatible. Sony appears to be moving that way as well.

I will say at E3 or whenever Sony decides to reveal this their messaging and delivery have to be on point. But they've been pretty good about that this gen.

Why does that even matter? Even if Sony moves to a yearly update cycle and joins the Apple style iterative model, they're not going to abandon the 40 million users of the OG PS4.

"And for another 699, you can get a 32 inch LCD Playstation TV, now with Adaptive sync!"

No sony won't bother with that because they can't test for it.

After the Vive/Occulus launch, I just question Sony's ability to say "This must be 30/60/90 or NO DEAL!" and have it mean anything. Because they mean well, but people making the stuff for their hardware are going to make things their way in the end, or go elsewhere.

Time to sell my PS4! I want to be ready for PSVR and PS4 Neo when it drops. Summer Lesson will be my killer app and I'll be damned if it runs better on Neo and I didn't do my best to rectify the problem.

Damn right. Nothing but the best for our waifus. xD

Because the logical limits to manufacting, distribution and retail apply here.

Also actually yes Sony has always provided a updated SKU of their consoles every 3 years. Its called a Slim. The only difference here is that this Slim will have a bump in power.

This console's GPU power is over 3 times the power of the XB1's GPU, as opposed to 50% for the OG PS4 to XB1...that's pretty significant.

Its not a generational leap or anything close to it, but it is notable and significant for 399 especially considering OG PS4 has not dropped below 300 yet.

Look at the difference in the specs between the PS3 and the PS4. Then look at the difference in the specs between the PS4 and "Neo".

There is your answer.

And if the trend continues? Two years later another slightly more powerful machine releases and then two more years.

If this is successful you think they will stop there? I don't think people realize the precedent they might be setting here. Success of this thing very well could end up being a big nightmare down the line.

"well, we can always go to the NX if we don't want to do this NEO mode, right?"
