[IGN First] Final Fantasy XV combat gameplay

Everyone still interested in this interview? Think we got over another page left to be translated

Yeah very much - the idea of Tabata as essentially a general organizing a war effort is interesting. He sounds like an incredibly pragmatic guy, which is probably what SE needs right now.

Yes, please ! This interview is very very interesting. What amaze me is that you can see how a japanese working structure has been changed in order to compete with western dev studios and why also the game took so long to make outside of shifting ressources to others projects before focusing on FFXV. Hope the rest of the interview as much interesting.

By the way, I'm sure most of you have heard that the English FFXV Twitter is taking questions for Tabata that he will answer (15 of them) at the E3 presentation.
#AskFFXV

If you hadn't heard, now you know! I haven't bothered to ask any yet because I'm sure that others will probably ask the same questions that I would have.

What are you guys hoping will be answered?

(If you don't have a Twitter account and still want to ask a question, I don't mind asking your question from my account)

I'm prolly the only guy who enjoyed Duscae's combat.... I struggled in the Platinum DEMO until I realized from NoctisVsStar that you can actually air battle.

At first I didn't know what to think about it but Duscae's combat grew on me. I actually still play it some because my 3 year old son is totally obsessed with it. I gotta say... I *really* like the feeling of dodging/defending with L1 SO much more than the square button. To me, that makes the combat feel a lot different and it's just more comfortable and satisfying for some reason. The weapon deck thing wasn't really bad either but it's cool to have manual weapon switching.

Agreed fully. Duscae's combat was amazing and so much fun. Easy to use and flashy.

The most important question that everyone needs to ask is if Insomnia can be explored at some point in the game.

I definitely saw some people asking that. I also really wanna hear an explanation of what the other battle mode is. Saw people asking that as well.

And actually, just thought of this, I think I'll ask if we are able to customize the controls at all.

I think the battle mode is the difficulty settings that are a first for FF. I believe it was stated during a famitsu interview with Tabata and Gooch.

And in regards to Insommia based on the uncovered trailer it seems we get there early in the game and it's ultimately blocked off. Which makes me believe that we will return near the end game probably somewhat destroyed/conquered so we will likely sneak are way in. I guess it will be explorable to a degree.

People keep saying you can mash buttons or use button presses, but it's something that intentionally misses the point. Pressing doesn't feel any better than holding because the combos aren't made to be executed with one-to-one presses like combos in other games. Whether you're holding or pressing, there's a huge disconnect between Noctis swinging the weapon and you as the player giving your input. It makes pressing rather than holding feel "wrong" and it's a little sad. That said, the intent of the battle system seems to be for the player to focus on positioning, dodging and weapon switching rather than on paying attention to attacking.

Correct, you couldn't have said it better. Here's my thought on the combat system and why it brings a disconnect to some and it's fair complaint to be honest. Playing FFXV for some people is a battle between their mind and their hands by that I mean the following: you're brain is telling you this should be a snappy twitch action game but when you press the buttons it feels sluggish and weird since the action on screen isn't computing with your brain, that's where the discontent comes from. Even with a hypothetical PC release at 60fps it still won't change that "feeling" outside of mods XD. But the mobility provided is incredible and this holding button scenario is preventing players from being free and instead they are stuck in the mud moving and fighting awkwardly. I can somewhat understand why they chose that to make the game more "accessible" but in reality it's causing an issue for some cause they cannot distinguish between tapping and holding.

A prime example of this is fighting the Iron Giant, the attack feedback isn't rich but that could change I mean hitting it it's like hitting steel (literally) but during their devs videos they've shown the behemoth reacting and twitching to Noctis attacks.

The combat is deep since it requires positioning like you stated and knowing when to cancel out of attacks, and using warp points for safety. The cool thing about warp points is that enemies can destroy it. For instance, if you hang on the light post the Iron Giant will attack it and you will fall so you just can't campout ( with the exception of the top of the citadel must be a case by case scenario plus the type of enemy and environment)

Ultimately, it's hard to give a definite and concrete answer without having the other party members unique abilities plus other weapons with status effects. I have an idea of what to expect for final game and honestly I'm excited about it. Would I prefer to be twitch fast and snappy? Of course! But I already adapted on how the game is meant to be played instead of fighting with my hands and mind.

Finally, my only concerns at this point is the team working towards a stable framerate and get that IQ good, if you gotta drop the resolution to 900p to achieve this do it. Outside from that we still got until the end of August or first week of sept (when it goes gold ) and a day one patch so there's faith on my end.. I mean it took TW3 several patches and look at it now. Believe!

I think you're right about the difficulty setting but the way he talked about it made it sound like there's more to it than just making enemies easier to take down or something. It seems like it will change the play style in some way. I will want to go with whatever option makes the game more challenging but I'm just curious to know how the other setting is different from what we've seen and played so far. I'm kind of thinking they might have the weapon deck system available in the "easy" mode.

A duscae mode with a preset weapon deck instead of changing it on the fly would be a cool easy mode.

I liked Duscae a lot. Not worrying about individual strikes/weapon switches meant I could focus more on perfect guarding, special abilities, positioning, and transitioning between offense and defense.

I liked the controls in Platinum too, though, and the aerial game was far better. Also prefer specials to be tied to equipped weapon instead of cycled through with d pad. Honestly, SE never lets me down on FF battle systems, so I'm sure whatever it is will work.

It seems those abilities were given to the party members to not make them feel worthless. Although, I wonder if abilities like drain that were in duscae will be tied to a specific weapon.

Right, and I like that because party members tend to blend into the background of a fight in involved action RPGs. In Platinum Noctis could use tempest still when broadsword equipped, and I'm guessing lots of his other special attacks will be button combos too. If we could have a little more control of/engagement with party members during fights but keep Noctis' specials I think it's best of both worlds.

I know you guys will kill me, but at this point I wouldn't mind if FFXV was delayed till September 2017 for the ps4 neo.

I feel it's unfair to say that the game has been in development for 10 years.

The game clearly needs to be on something much more powerful than ps4.

I have no idea how the x1 version will turn out, at least there wont be any compromises?

Huh?
But the PS4K supposedly has no exclusives, and it's coming this Fall.
Plus, even if XV comes out before it, they can just release a Neo patch.
No need for the PS4 version to not come out in September.

Uhm... Neo is coming out this Fall^^ Probably a month or two after FFXV, which will get a Neo patch, as every game coming out from late September on is required to have a Neo patch on release.

I wish they'd have a few more months minimum. It's currently in a very rough state. That November 30th date wouldn't have been so bad honestly...

It would be a real shame if they release it and it feels rushed after 10 years of waiting.

I honestly didn't feel there was an issue with just pressing buttons to initiate commands. Coming off of Souls games, it felt alright to me. I suppose it depends on what you are used to, what you expect from the action aspect of the battle system. But to me, I didn't notice a huge disconnect.

YO, I wanted to post exactly this, too. Somehow I've had this strange feeling recently that it will be really rough and unpolished on release. I could've easily waited another two months or so and just get it together with the Neo, honestly. The wait is really easy for me, right now, as I'm super busy with university stuff and am keeping mostly out of FFXV threads. I won't watch any E3 or other new footage until release either.

Honestly though we haven't seen what the game look like now, or how it'll look at release. The GI and probably IGN stuff is months old (let alone Platinum), i'm still optimist they'll reach TW3 levels of IQ/Performance by release.

Yeah, I think many of us are a little bit worried to some degree. I hope they can really tighten up the game before release. The game deserves no less than a really polished experience.

You're not alone there. I liked customizing a set, keeping in mind of what weapons are for the situation that arises. Normally in Action games, on the fly weapon switching is a must for me, but for an RPG I liked planning that stuff.

But it's probably for the best. I don't recall Duscae having enemies that really showed potential for the system.

I think the E3 build should give us a good indication of the state of polish. Any gaffers going to E3? (Outside of Kags)

Yeah it feels fine to me but I get why it might bother some XD

lol no. This compromises talk must stop. If the game will have faults it's not because of hardware, it's all on the developer.

Well at least you get to play FFXV I will await your impressions in regards to IQ and FPS.. A little faith goes a long way.

Believe!

No prob! Though I'm not sure if it will be available to play at the show yet(haven't gotten confirmation one way or the other). Though from what I understand we'll be hearing many impressions about the current state from several outlets at the show. Clearly IGN and 4Gamer have played it.

If it's available at the show, even if it's behind closed doors I'll do my best to play it and report back.

Yeah, even Tabata also said the November date would have been great instead of September. Crunch time must be insane for this game.

Okay maybe my 2017 release date was a bit dramatic, but this is my gut feeling as well.

Jesus christ at wanting this delayed further.

I think we just want was best for the game,
Think SFV, clearly capcom made a mistake, I feel that this game is being rushed considering tabata was asking everyone to acknowledge that the game started when he took over, less than 3 years ago?

You really think so, after Uncovered and everything? Seems like there's no way they can go back on that now.

Uncharted 4 had like 3 delays?

I don't think they would have a problem delaying it if there are noticeable technical flaws at launch. They desperately want this to have solid critical acclaim and word of mouth.

The problem is that they haven't been transparent with all the footage that came from Uncovered, Gameinformer, IGN and whether or not it was running on PC or consoles.

Hopefully at E3 we get confirmed PS4 build footage.

September 2017? holy shit no.

Other huge games with delays had their release date set already, too, see Uncharted 4 recently, which got delayed thrice (first it was late 2015, then March 2016, then April and lastly May). If SE realizes FFXV is not ready for September 30 they will add a month or two. Too much riding on its reception to risk bad first reviews just because of 2 months or so. Another positive side effect: they would get more time to produce the additional UCEs they just issued and could get them into fans' hands at release, too, which they said they couldn't guarantee yet for the second batch.

2 months are nothing in the grand scheme of things, especially when we've been waiting for years already.
It won't get delayed to november to be eaten by the big sharks.
What's there even in November? No AssCreed this year, no Mass Effect anymore, what did I forget?
Thank you!

Also i would love to play this game around Christmas,is all nice and cold and we all get some days off. Oh yeah.

Hehe, agreed.

Dishonored 2, CoD and GT Sports?

Dishonored 2 is no threat, CoD only a little and GT Sports has pretty much zero overlap. A new AssCreed and Mass Effect would've been much more dangerous. Only thing that could kill FFXV completely would be Persona 5
jk
