X-Men Apocalypse |OT| Days of Past Future

The movie was okay. I didn't love it or hate it. IMO, it was Bryan Singer's worst X-Men film yet, but still not as bad as The Last Stand. It had its moments, but it was also too CGI-y, had too much pointless fan service and cameos, and it was poorly written in parts. For the most part, it just felt like filler until the next movie.

I hated Mystique in this. Why is she an X-Men now? Why was she barely in her natural blue form? She's supposed to be proud of her natural look, yet she spent 90% of this movie as blonde Katniss. Did Jenifer Lawrence bitch too much about the makeup in the previous movies or something?

I'm also confused about the timeline. Didn't DoFP bridge the old movies with the new, yet also fix some of the damage done by The Last Stand? Or is this just some alternate timeline now? Is X-Men 1 and 2 still canon? Cause if these movies are supposed to bridge to them eventually, then this movie just complicated that even more:

- The X-Men know where Striker's base is now.
- Jean and Scott already met Wolverine and Nightcrawler.
- Jean can already use her Phoenix powers, yet they're just emerging in X-Men 1 and 2.
- There's going to have to be a big falling out between Mystique/Magneto and Xavier/X-Men in the next sequel or two to explain their actions in X-Men 1 (as if First Class didn't complicate things enough making Mystique Xavier's "kid sister").

It's a new timeline. For all intents and purposes, the only things that we know will definitely happen after Apocalypse are Deadpool and the ending of DOFP.

Maybe some version of X1-3 still happen in this timeline, but odds are we won't see them anyway. But X1-3, as they were originally seen, are not part of the timeline anymore.

It's an alternate timeline. One where Mystique, due to her not killing the president, is a hero (for some reason) for both mutants and humans. In the original timeline, Mystique would never look for lost mutants around the world and send them to Xavier; at that point in time she would be either held captive and experimented on by Trask, or running away from USA military for the murder she meant to originally commit in DoFP.

my understanding is Xmen 1 and 2 no longer exist as part of this timeline, they are part of a different timeline where the events of DoFP didnt take place.

Nooooo

So it really is the Last Stand again.

I haven't seen Last Stand since 2006 or whenever it came out so I don't remember. The problems mainly stem from an excess of corny dialogue and character moments that are both forced and cliched. They're re-treading ground they covered in earlier films quite a bit and usually stuff that was done better the first time round.

I wouldn't go that far, Apocalypse is a really fun movie despite its problems. There's parts that reach the highs and even exceed the best X films, but with lower lows by comparison (I never felt they quite reached X3/Origins levels, though). The biggest problem I feel like is it doesn't all fit together naturally, if that makes sense, I feel weird recounting the movie beats in my head.

X3 was so cheap and I feel like every 10 minutes something annoyed the hell out of me.

Watched it a third time... I seriously love the movie. My ranking would be:

1) X-Men: Days of Future Past
2) X-2
3) X-Men: First Class
4) X-Men: Apocalypse
5) X-Men
6) X-Men: The Last Stand

If I were to count The Wolverine, it would be between Apocalypse and X-Men, probably.

Ignore the RT score and go have some mutant fun.

Interesting. Your list is my list (I may put X2 over DoFP however) so I wonder if I'd like Apocalypse the same as you.

Might go check out the 3d version tonight after a few pints. I've never seen a 3d Singer film before. Not expecting much honestly, but it sounds like it's good for some unintentional laughs.

I didn't mind Lawrence's acting, but the character she was playing really didn't feel like Mystique. And I don't think it's really Jennifer's fault. She used her powers just once in the whole movie and for the rest of the movie... you could replace her with anyone else (even a normal woman) and no one would see the difference. And I'm not even talking about her not being blue for like 80% of scenes she's in.

I think making Mystique a good guy destroyed the character. You could see the original Mystique in X-Men 1 and X-Men 2: proud, human hating sexy mutant with combat skills and abilities to morph into anyone -- and she did use those skills a lot to her advantages there. Here - she's just there to give some speeches.

This so much. What they have done with Mystique has really ruined my enjoyment of these films and shes even more prominent in this film I've heard. I just don't understand why they changed the character so much.

Augh. This is a bummer to hear.

Ah well. This was my most hyped blockbuster of the summer, so I gotta see it. But my faith in Singer have wavered. Though Simon Kinberg did write it so I'm also not surprised.

I was in the same boat, but hopefully you'll be pleasantly surprised. There's a lot to like here still.

My personal ranking:

-First Class
-DOFP (either cut)
-X2
-Apocalypse
-Wolverine (Unrated cut)
-X1
-Wolverine Origins
-X3

Because it's Jennifer Lawrence playing her. I'd be totally fine if they removed her completely going forward.

Nah, she plays a rather small role in the grand scheme of things. She's something like Wolverine in DoFP, a plot device; she's present a lot during the movie, but overall stays always in the background, does very little. However, as I mentioned earlier, she's less of a classic Mystique in this one than she was in First Class and DoFP.

She's present a lot, does nothing but acts like she's doing something.

Honestly, she reminded me of Kurt Russels's character in Big Trouble in Little China.

The fight's were so stupid. They could not figure out how to make these mutants fight. Or who should fight who. Why is beast fighting psylock , or cyclops fighting storm. There's no drama to any of it, nor is there any logic to it. It's just silly.

You really a jornalist?

Hell no. I work at a newspaper but that doesn't make me a journalist. I recap movies, oversee the calendar, and write opinion pieces every now and again.

And since we're doing the ranking thing:

THE X-MEN MOVIES, IN ORDER ACCORDING TO QUALITY

1) X-Men: First Class
2) X2: X-Men United
3) X-Men: Days of Future Past
4) Deadpool
5) X-Men: Apocalypse
6) The Wolverine
7) X-Men
8) X-Men: The Last Stand
9) X-Men Origins: Wolverine

(Jesus, there's been nine of these fuckin things already)

It's even stupider when you realize that Quicksilver could easily incapacitate them within seconds.

Gatdamn this is on point. I might bump The Wolverine above Apocalypse on a different day though.

Man, and I had my doubts about number one before I finally decided that DOFP was it. It shows how much I love X2. Origins isn't even there, meh.

It isnt. People are overreacting. Everything needs to be amazing or dogshit nowadays.

Its a fine 6/10. Could have been much better but i wouldnt call it bad either.
Maybe I'm not as harsh toward it but I don't really think Last Stand is significantly different or worse than a 6/10.

This is one of the most meh movies I've seen in awhile.

The biggest thing that bothered me was the fact we got an origin movie six films into the franchise. This felt like it should've been the very first xmen movie.

Not to mention there were no memorable set pieces/fights.

I fully expected this to drop the ball from the trailers and it did just that.

Last Stand is just terrible.

They kill off Cyclops off screen, fuck up the Phoenix Saga and let Magneto murder mutants left and right what is totally against his character.

Also its a bad movie by its own.

Or people have different opinions/tastes than you? SHOCKING :p

I'm in the camp who thought it was bad. I expect more from a "Comic movie" these days, especially after watching Captain America, Deadpool, etc. The novelty of seeing "omfg x-men!" on screen has worn off and now I want to see better stories that make sense, given the characters involved.

I will admit it's better than BvS, though, so there's that

But is it better than Thor TDW?

Saw the movie......eh. It wasn't BvS levels of bad, but it was nowhere near Civil War or Deadpool levels of good.

Right now, I'll give it a 5/10 (but I could go up to a 6 once I let the movie sit a bit more in my head). I probably won't re-watch it again with my own cash. I mean, it's not god-awful by any stretch of the imagination, just......eh.

I would never watch Thor again. I would watch Apocalypse again, so I guess the answer is... yes!
Singer redeemed!!

I probably won't catch this in theaters now with the reception it's getting. That kinda makes me sad, the only other X-men film I skipped on the big screen was Wolverine Origins. I just don't have the time these days though and would probably either rewatch civil war or the nice guys.

Here's a question though for those that have seen it, who is more OP, Jean Grey or Scarlet Witch?

I wasn't expecting much from this but was pleasantly surprised. It's far from the best X-movie but it's not as bad as X3, WOrigins and probably more fun than the first one. Quicksilver steals the show again and J-Law is in full Catnis mode. Magnetos constant flipflopping is becoming very tiresome at this point. It's a perfect 3/5 movie.

Some movie needs to let Scarlet Witch loose.

Civil War is just the airport scene

I giggled every time apocalypse said anything because I thought he sounded like Vito Corleone.

"My child, why do you ehslave youhsehf?"

For me it's less about the movie's quality and more about what it did wrong:
- killed off Cyclops and Xavier
- demutated Rouge, Mystique and Magneto (although the ending suggested he still has the powers)
- made Jaggernaut a mutant (I know previous movies weren't faithful to the canon either, but c'mon - Jaggernaut's shtick is that he hates mutants and the source of his powers is magic)
- ruined the possibilities for Phoenix Saga that the previous movie set up
- ruined an interesting idea for the story that was the mutant cure

That's a lot of sins for a single movie.

For me, it's that Last Stand is just a bad experience. This Apocalypse is a bad movie but not a bad experience. The characters are likable and the story is ultimately one of redemption.

I like Origins more than X3 only because it's largely harmless, forgettable schlock with some occasionally good action and unintentionally hilarious moments.

X3 is unforgettable for all the wrong reasons, and has very few redeeming qualities (I always recognize Beast here). Origins could be safely ignored, this shitfest necessitated DOFP.

Now I know these movies are completely fucked in terms of continuity, but can anyone tell me why Singer couldn't even adhere to his own prequel? You know, the thing with Mystique as Stryker?

This movie was boring as shit. Actors looked like they were standing around waiting for someone to yell action the whole time..

wouldn't be surprised if this "plot hole" we all spotted super-easily is getting left for Wolverine 3.

Or maybe they just shrugged and said fuck it.
