Digitimes: NX mass production delayed to early 2017, VR integration, hybrid(?)

Can't be true.
Not another VR headset on the market!
If it was, then surely this would spell the beginning of the end for the big N?
For me I wish they would go go third party already. This ain't the 80's anymore, and you can only survive off peoples nostalgia for so long!

Please don't be true :(

This rumor is hot garbage. The part that is most crazy is the year 1 production number, there's no way the initial plan was to come out of the gate way hotter than PS4, which just hit 36 million in January or February, after 2.5 years.

Not believing the part about adding VR and NX being a hybrid. Especially like the one described in the article (screen + controller...+ joystick). The part about mass production starting Early 2017, if it means January, could be believable enough, since the article itself states mass production of some key components will start at the end of 2016. If there's one thing it's better to never believe from Digitimes, are the shipments forecast: they were high as hell for PS4 too, and...and I think another Digitimes article stated it would've been 12 millions, later on, why is the article ignoring that? And the Animal Crossing series hasn't sold 20 millions on 3DS.

Well, the Wii worked as a proof of concept for motion controlled gaming (and later added 1:1 stuff with WM+) so maybe Nintendo is banking on being the "cheap" entry VR machine.

If NX does have some connection to VR, it will just be compatible with Vive or Oculus at this point. It really doesn't make much sense anyways to create your own VR device when someone else makes a better one. Not only that but if VR is to get off the ground it needs a standard and stuff like PSVR is cool for Playstation fans, but you can't use that device anywhere else. It could generate crossbuy sells also, as gamers who buy these expensive VR devices look for compatible systems to get new experiences from.

This is all just so damn frustrating for us Nintendo fans.

Once upon a time it was exciting & fun to discuss NX rumors...but now it's actually getting very annoying.

Wii U and 3DS are dead and other than Pokemon/Paper Mario/Metroid Prime Federation...we have NO fucking Nintendo games to play until Nintendo sorts out their shit and releases the NX....which looks like it may even slip past March.

I am dreading the thought of them delaying it even further and deciding to release the NX in fall 2017....and even worse delaying Zelda for Wii U to coincide with the launch of the NX version.

I 100% believe the NX was to be unveiled at this year's E3 and released in late 2016, but the PSVR and XB Scorpio spooked the shit out of Nintendo (which serves them right, if they intended on yet again releasing underpowered hardware).

The only good thing is I believe it's spooked them enough to want to bump the hardware (if Emily was right, and that the NX is barely more powerful than the PS4).

This article sounds bonkers.

I'm also getting tired of hearing semi-negative things about Nintendo anymore. Just show the damn thing, all it takes is a modernization of your services, enough power, a novel concept and a virtual console subscription based service, that's all I want.

...oh wait.

Not sure I buy the bit about VR. VR is not something that Nintendo can just tack on. Would it use the HTC or Oculus headset? Is the "5-7 inch display" set up in a way that would allow for something like a cardboard cutout to work, or would the controller/joystick bits get in the way? Does it somehow use your phone + a cardboard cutout? Makes no sense to me.

If the rumored NX was not as powerful as PS4K or the new Xbox, then how could this do VR effectively?

Further, if the NX was delayed for software reasons and Nintendo really did swerve at the last second for VR, I don't think even a delay until March would give them enough time to make VR games...at least the kinds of games that we'd like to play. A basic Wii Sports kind of thing maybe with traditional games padding out the lineup would be the most I could see in that scenario.

I dunno, I'm just skeptical that this will be some kind of VR machine.

No way to know what their VR would entail. Could just be super gimmicky, Katamari level graphics.

I don't buy it.

But hypothetically, this would most likely delay the release out of March, correct?

A device with a screen + VR integration?

This is all starting to sound expensive.

Agreed, and Kimishima just said,
It’s true there is a certain expectation for the prices of Nintendo consoles. Our developers put a lot into them, but we can not sell at a loss. The final price is determined by balancing these two conflicting ideas. I don’t believe it’s as simple as “because this is a new platform, we can make it more expensive.”

Sounds like someone made up a bunch of stuff.

- The hybrid theory has long been denied
- Nintendo isn't particularly known for jumping on market trends, they were rather critical of VR altogether. And they are right, simply copying market trends like this will only make their systems more expensive when they rather need to have prices below those of competitors to be successful.
- Mass production in early 2007 makes a launch in March 2007 almost impossible, unless they launch with just a few units.

Also baffling:
Nintendo's smartphone games have received positive feedbacks from gamers.
They only launched Miitomo, which has received rather negative feedback and is losing users at a fast pace.

The NX is clearly a dual screen 4K VR compatible hybrid console with backwards compatibility. This is getting out of hand.

Someone send SupermetalDave this link so he can make a new video about how this means that the NX is using Polaris because of VR.

I think the delay could have been a little of both, Nintendo being concerned about launch titles and where the NX hardware would stand up against current systems and future ones alike.

I would take Emily's hardware inside information with a tub of salt, because everything is pointing to the NX being Polaris based. Sure she says it isn't, but Amd's president Lisa Su goes over in detail about what the 3 new design wins mean for AMD.

Everyone assumes that because Amd has said in the past that one of the 3 is beyond gaming, it automatically excludes Nintendo from getting Polaris. But the one beyond gaming could easily be Microsoft and their mission to push Windows 10.

Seems like somebody read an NX Rumor thread on GAF, translated it into their native language, and then back into English all via Google Translate.

Complete tosh, and if it were some how true, would indicate a complete lack of any clear vision or self awareness on their part.

And quite frankly if they go for another second screen controller, after utterly failing to justify it with the WiiU, and all the problems of reduced power to accommodate it, inflating the price tag due to it, and how much the gimmick focusing keeps third parties away, then their bloody idiots.

Even a 'hybrid' is going to have no selling power outside Japan, given that that would mean competing with smartphones and tablets in a market where those are socially acceptable to use in public while dedicated handhelds (baring use by small children) are definitely not.

Besides that, given how much bloody difficulty they've had with the jump just to low level HD, I can't imagine them being able to make anything for VR that would ever stick to a decent development schedule or not be crippled by some stupid decision and lack of understanding for the medium.

Like I say, utter tosh though. Would be a hilarious train wreck if true, but nope, not happening.

He already posted a new video before this thread appeared and he dissects alot of information and provides details of why it will be Polaris based. After yesterday and the RX480 specs and pricing, it really could be no other choice for Nintendo.

Not to mention that Nvidia stated that they are done with mobile and wants to focus their Tegra business towards car infotainment and self driving cars. So yeah...

You think they will never again try something new because they struggled once ? Thas not how it works....but i also dont think that VR will play a big role for them with NX. Maybe with a revision down the line.

Shit will just get too expensive - which killed WiiU, a 150-200 bucks system which was sold for more than 300.

No. But if they hop on the VR train, they can't repeat the same mistakes. They took too long adapting to HD and the Wii U got crushed.

Personally I think Nintendo will take a wait and see approach to VR, but who knows really.

My first reaction was horseshit, as it would cost at absolute minimum $700 to do a powerful enough console and quality VR HMD/Controllers (sold separately obviously). On the other hand their last 2 devices launched at $250 and $350, and they expected most people to buy both, so maybe an extra $100 isn't completely out of the realm of possibility. That's even ignoring all their portable upgrades they expect people to double dip on. Certainly there's no way they can do both a hybrid and VR though, too much of the BoM would be devoured by the mobile device.

At this point and with all the rumors still going on, the next delay will be to add an Espresso Maker to it to keep you awake lol. I have no idea what to believe or not believe anymore. I wouldn't call myself a huge Nintendo Fan but I do own every system they release except for the Virtual boy and the N64 so I guess deep down im an undercover Nintendo fan. I say this because I really guess I want them to succeed but in a twisted way I want them to just go full on Handheld only and 3rd party for console games. I know I know the Nintendo treasure trove of money their sitting on and they can survive 100 more bad systems blah blah but I know I cant be the only one who feels this way....

right guys...????

Wii U already had espresso

There is literally zero hard evidence that NX is using any particular hardware. It was assumed by everyone that AMD would get the nod until the Nvidia rumors started up. Emily said it wouldn't use X86 and gave ballpark comparisons to the PS4 and XB1. The most specific rumor is that it's Tegra based, which lines up with what AMD has said about their semi custom design wins and various other circumstantial evidence like Nintendo's lead system architect being a former Nvidia Engineering Director.

AMD got 2 design wins in 2014 that are X86 based. It makes the most sense for them to be Scorpio and Neo because we know roughly what they are. The other beyond gaming design win could also be Xbox related, as a low end streaming STB has been rumored, but we don't know. We honestly don't know shit about NX at this point.

Sounds unbelievable and hilarious. Excited to see if true or not. Either way would be fun to watch Ninty fans reaction once all is revealed :3
