Crash Bandicoot remastered collection coming in 2017

I understand everyone's skepticism, but I'm cautiously optimistic about this. I can do without 1:1 asset remastering, and even a new cast of VAs as long as the gameplay is kept intact, and it isn't unnecessarily bloated to make it "feel next-gen". R&C got me on the fence, and this could finally push me to buy a PS4.

Remastering the first three games seems like a good idea. I'm especially ready for Crash 2, the best one.
This is a great post.

Honestly with ETDP saying Sony's making a new game, along with all the other evidence I feel like the IP has, or is in the process of changing hands. We just won't know about it until they're ready.

Perhaps I should address the bandicoot in the room. My T-shirt choice for the keynote at PlayStation Experience in December caused a bit of a stir. So you can imagine how thrilled I am that we worked with Activision to bring one of PlayStation’s most celebrated characters, Crash Bandicoot, to PS4. The Crash Bandicoot Remaster will contain Crash 1, Crash 2 and Warped, fully remastered for PS4.

I knew it. A full budget new Crash game does not make any fucking sense as an investment in 2016. Crash is such a dated 90s IP. They are remastering the old games as a test to see if there is an viability for a full blown reboot, but there's not enough convincing evidence for them to make that move yet.

To be honest, I'm surprised they are getting by with War Sim in Space and a handfull of other survival post apocalyptic games, we've been going what 3 gens on this stuff? Crash will most likely sell to normal kid audiences, my son was facinated by Horizon, Crash, and Spiderman. Lost his mind on those games and he can hardly talk.

Again we can wait and see. Either way I'm bumping to serve crow or eat it. Nobody once said remade. There is a massive difference between remakes and remasters.

What the hell are you going on about? Why are you so insistent that they're going to get games from 19-21 years ago running on their original engine and mechanics, up the resolution and call it a day? Do you not understand what "from the ground up" means? They're brand new games in a new engine with completely new assets being based on the respective original three games.

It's not what we wanted.

But it's a start. Sells well,a big budget Crash adventure may get greenlit.

Exactly it's a start.
They'll use sales of the collection to gauge demand for a full sequel.
I hope we get more details about the quality we can expect from this collection.

CTRL+F'd the thread and no dice. Vicarious Visions are doing the remaster:

I wonder if this will come to other platforms? They said "first" with Crash in Skylanders, but don't say it for the remaster. But they don't say exclusive either.

Has a feeling it was Vicarious, they also worked on his appearance in Skylanders.

A none more fitting dev at Activision. Good pick.

And about the exclusivity of the remasters, let's not forget that anytime there's an exclusivity, ALL of the console makers will make it clear as day if something is exclusive to their systems, wording is crucial, and it's an easy boost in attention in their direction.

There's NO reason for Sony and Activision to stay silent on this if it were the case, hell they use the word as I said when describing the availability of the figure, being exclusively obtainable via the PS3 and PS4 starter packs (but again usable in any version of the game).

"Fully remastered"... I don't know why but I get this weird feeling it's going to be a greatest hits of the three games and not the full three games. I hope I'm wrong, though! Reading the press release it sounds like the full three games, which helps.

I sense many broken PS4 controllers during the latter part of Crash Bandicoot. Maybe using the stick will solve that.

Troll ass Layden. Not exactly what I wanted but I'll take what I can get. I was worried for a second it would be a psx 14 ff7-level announcement.

I was thinking the other day about a new crash having an open world hub world that expands as you play, but the bulk of the game is traditional crash platforming. Multiplayer modes inspired by ctr and crash bash

Is this 2016 Ratchet and Clank remaster or 2016 FFVII Remaster?
Neither.

Ratchet and Clank was a full redo of the first game. It's not the same levels/gameplay, it's a retelling. Essentially a new game with the original's ideas.

FFVII was a port of a cleaned up PC port.

From what they've said, expect the original games (and gameplay) with new HD visuals. There may be "upgraded mechanics" but it'll be the same games/levels in the end. Basically what a lot of people complaining about FFVII Remake wanted (but it's a lot easier to replace cartoony visuals with HD cartoony visuals than chibi with photorealistic lol)

Well hey, let's give Sony/Activision some credit here. At least they're doing SOMETHING with Crash. Unlike Microsoft who is just letting Rare's IPs rot at the moment.

Ugh, Sony, you've been uploading and selling these games since the PSP. This isn't exciting unless they really are "from the ground up" REMADE.

Is this 2016 Ratchet and Clank remaster or 2016 FFVII Remaster?
Neither. It's a Halo Anniversary style remaster. At least that's what "from the ground up" means to me.

Also people questioning exclusivity. Shawn specifically mentioned partnering with activision for this while announcing the game. I don't think it'll show up on other platforms, Crash in skylanders will though of course.

If i know my PR speak, this makes it sound like it won't be exclusive at all and we should expect other platforms announced closer to release ala tekken 7

Vicarious Visions....that's actually a great pick for this remaster set. Good going, Activision.

I hope the original versions of the games are included as well. That'd make this the ultimate package.

Not sure if you're aware but "from the ground up" is the exact language used to describe it

The real issue is "remaster" has become a mess of a classification. Describes anything from "we put it on the system in 1080p" to "we upped the framerate" to "we replaced a bunch of textures and upgraded character models and fixed the gameplay".

2017? The fugg? Sigh, 2016 ended up being a colossal letdown. Obviously, not just because of this new thing we didn't even know was on the way, but just... yeah. Everything.

Well, whatever. I hope this turns out -- this collection needs to be pristine.

Yep. Likely when footage is able to be shown, maybe even around Spring 2017, as by then they can announce an NX version alongside an Xbox One release and possibly PC.

If it is multiplat, you can bet it WILL be on NX. Aside from the platformer audience/demographic match, Vicarious have been uber close to Nintendo hardware and even did Skylanders Giants on Wii U at launch themselves (they also did the Wii version of Marvel Ultimate Alliance themselves at launch as well).

The fact that it takes so long to release it (a vague.. next year), mean that's it's more likely a remake, just like R&C.

Well I was hoping for a new game but a remaster is pretty damn good too, and if it sells well it could mean a brand new crash game in the future.

I agree; they are a fantastic studio and made some damn good games. They are the reason the Skylanders series was able to evolve gameplay wise from a simple brawler into more of a platformer with heavy action elements.

Their work on the Crash series should be noted too, making a great successor/sequel to CTR and some great 2D Crash titles on the GBA.

I agree; Sony likely gave them the 'push' to try the IP out again and after seeing the demand, they got a major internal studio (Vicarious Visions) to tackle the Crash IP. I honestly feel they are a great fit for a remaster project :).

Anyway, I see it being a timed exclusive for PS4 or at least some bonus being in the PS4 version of the remaster/remake/ect (the original games as a bonus, CTR remaster, some of the PS2 games being included as an early download ala Star Wars PS4 Console bundle, ect).

Either way, very excited to here a great studio is working with Crash again :D!
