No Trump campaign buttons or bumper stickers for me. I’m part of the new silent majority: those who don’t like Donald Trump but might vote for him anyway. For many of us, Trump has only one redeeming quality: He isn’t Hillary Clinton. He doesn’t want to turn the United States into a politically correct, free-milk-and-cookies, European-style social democracy where every kid (and adult, too) gets a trophy just for showing up.

Members of this new silent majority, many of us front-wave baby boomers, value hard work and love the United States the way it was. We long for a bygone era when you didn’t need “safe spaces” on college campuses to shelter students from the atrocity of dissenting opinions, lest their sensibilities be offended. We have the reckless notion that college is the one place where sensibilities are supposed to be challenged and debated. Silly us.

These people are terrifying.

Truly, absolutely, and disgustingly terrifying.

My favorite thing about Baby Boomers bitching about participation trophies is that they and their Gen X children are the ones who handed them all out.

As if I ever wanted that piece of plastic crap. I hated Little League. YOU MADE ME DO IT.

But even if you didn't feel this way, you wouldn't want to teach children the terrible lesson of how its good to participate in things. Damn, now all children are ruined.

THESE PEOPLE MAKE ME SO MAD.

(EDIT: I mean people like in the article, not anyone over 35, to be clear. Now that I'm a less emotional, I hope it's apparent that I'm not meaning to disparage two entire generations or claim milennials are the only ones with problems. I'm just musing over the fact that the same people who awarded the infamous participation trophy now lambast their children and grandchildren for receiving them. Like, I didn't ask for a trophy for showing up! It's not like I have a closet full of Little League trophies that I cherish and retain as symbols of my glorious participation. That anybody of any age expects an award just for showing up is a myth perpetuated by people like this writer. I think this is stupid. You don't have to be an adult for very long to become a jaded cynic who doesn't expect anything from anyone, whether you got a participation trophy or not.)

"I Hate Donald Trump, But..." is pretty thin code for "I Like Donald Trump, But Won't Admit It."

You do not vote for that man unless you prescribe to his brand of racist, anti-intellectual, destructive garbage. You are either onboard, or off.

He doesn’t want to turn the United States into a politically correct, free-milk-and-cookies, European-style social democracy where every kid (and adult, too) gets a trophy just for showing up.
Reads like a Facebook comment.

"He doesn’t want to turn the United States into a politically correct, free-milk-and-cookies, European-style social democracy where every kid (and adult, too) gets a trophy just for showing up."

....WHY THE FUCK NOT?!

Like, okay, socialism has it's issues, but you're basically saying here "Hillary Clinton will make an effort that everyone feels welcome and happy."

How fucking awful.

College safe spaces have absolutely fuck all to do with Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. This guy is a fucking imbecile.

Because if everyone feels welcome and happy how am I supposed to feel that I'm inherently better than them???

A. I believe there are people out there like this who are not racists but

B. "Members of this new silent majority, many of us front-wave baby boomers, value hard work and love the United States the way it was."

This guy is a racist.

And who can forget the way Republicans were bullied over health care?

Indeed. Lots of ramming and throats. God, it's getting hot in here.

Right, he doesn't want that. He wants to turn it into a bigoted, racist, be-white-or-go-home, Nazi-style fascist dictatorship. Fuck that.

Remember how Obama shut down the government over ACA?

"I don't like Donald Trump, but I'm a fucking moron with no concept of cause and effect"

Seriously, but as much as I dislike Hillary, I don't hate women, gays/lesbians, blacks, mexicans, jews and muslims enough to vote for a complete asshole.
I'd rather eat stale bread rolls than eat fresh puffer fish

A lot of people will show up and vote for him even though they don't openly talk about it. People need to be afraid of his ability to appease to the general white population.

"Trump is just trying to preserve the American way"

Just like the good 'ol days right Mr. Author.

You guys better vote, otherwise fucks like this will send your country back in time

In other words. "I like that Donald trump expresses a similar hatred and fear of anyone who isn't a white male. It makes me feel less alone in my bigoted fuckery."

Long after trump has lost and gone back to hiding in his gaudy tower to lose money, his negative effects will live on with the millions of pieces of shit he emboldened to feel justified in their bigotry. Its such a horrible depressing shame to know he undid so much progress the US made in stamping out prejudiced attitudes.

Why the hell is this guy writing an op-ed for the Washington Post?

1) Op-eds are for people outside of a news organization to offer their opinions. Editorials are written by staffers.

2) This guy is a writer.

3) The content is intriguing enough to share online.

Look at that.

Lol what a dick-head.

Why even post this, OP? There's nothing to discuss really. We're on NeoGAF. You're not going to find a dissenting opinion of idiots who'll defend this kind of garbage.

Boomers introduced participation trophies because they wanted their Millennial uber-children to save the world and not be slackers working in record stores like their hated Gen X children turned out. Until they decided that they hate their Millennial kids too, then it's like participation trophies just made and handed themselves out.

And this is why people should still be scared Trump has a serious chance at the whitehouse. There are people who will go through such amazing feats of mental gymnastics to give themselves reason to vote for Trump.

Too many, I know a stupid guy who is going to vote for him because "fuck Hillary and four years of Trump would be entertaining".

I know a guy that has never voted in his life(he's 34), doesn't follow news at all, doesn't know any of trump's policies but he's thinking about voting for him because he's different....

When they say they hate political correctness, they mean they're OK with disparaging minorities and women, right?

The intersection here should reveal just how much of the push back against "safe spaces" and "criticism of speech" is about people who are willing to vote for the man increasingly aligned with neo nazis

"I pretend to dislike Donald Trump, but I'm a closet bigot and he might get my vote"

One and done.

What also gets me is that Hillary isn't even like what he is describing - that's far more close to Bernie Sanders than her (she is a centrist with left leaning tendencies).

I'm really starting to think anyone entertaining a vote for Trump is just dumb in some way.

Thought the related articles were funny. I must be nice not having to give a shit about the actual problem in this country and sit around thinking that the REAL PROBLEM is participation trophies or annoying college kids.

More to the point is that what he's saying is total bullshit.

I'm not voting for neither one. They're both horrible choices. We got an ultra liberal and a racist conservative. Ugh I wish we had a candidate that was neutral and everyone loved. One that would stand for the American values.

It's almost impressive how Trump has turned not being a racist homophobe into being "politically correct."

Honestly, any vote not for Hillary is a vote for Trump. And Hillary is not ultra-liberal, lol.

He doesn’t want to turn the United States into a politically correct, free-milk-and-cookies, European-style social democracy where every kid (and adult, too) gets a trophy just for showing up.

Because a European-style social democracy just sounds oh so terrible, right?

"I can only measure my worth by how many disadvantaged people there are around me!"

Vote.

Don't waste your democratic right, even if your choice doesn't jive with those around you

Have American politics shifted so far to the right that Hillary Clinton of all people is being accused of being too socialist?

. He doesn’t want to turn the United States into a politically correct, free-milk-and-cookies, European-style social democracy where every kid (and adult, too) gets a trophy just for showing up.

Fuck.

You.

F U, Baby Boomers. Your time is up. DIAF already!

You are horrible, horrible people. You are sexist, racist, and homophobic and worst of all, you impart your horrible values into the future generations.

I was of the same mindset but when it comes down to it but you kind of have to make a stand against evil and accept assistance from someone you hate.
