Personally speaking, I've got a 1080p/24/3D capable projector in my lounge, so I'm not that concerned, but I've seen a number of people asking about 3D Blu-Ray support in line with Sony's HMZ product. I suspect they'll be a few disappointed people if it's 2D only.

At least 24hz divides nicely into 120hz, so I can't see why support there should be a big issue.

Maybe it's technically tricky to take a 3D blu-ray and make it work on a VR headset in 3D? Not too knowledgeable about what tech blu-ray uses for 3D, but I assume it's made in an interlaced fashion instead of 2 distinct images?

3D Blu-ray uses frame-packing, where the left and right eye images are stacked on top of each other into a single 1920 x 2205 frame at 24fps.

The PSVR comes with a dedicated video processing unit. I can't see why this can't split the signal back into the 2 distinct images and warp them for the headset. That's kind of the job it was designed to do.

Even so, Sony might decide not to do it if they don't think the demand is there. After all, PS4 didn't have 3D Blu-Ray capability when it launched. Or perhaps they want to protect the HMZ by not replacing it with a cheaper product.

It's interesting to see "PSVR device software" listed; I guess the breakout box has updatable system software?

Also, am I right that the headset has an integrated mic? That's what I thought I saw/heard in the French video, but couldn't be sure. I assume that external mics will be supported via the 3.5mm jack.

I heard about a cool feature using the built-in mic in (I think) London Heist. When you've finished firing your gun and the barrel is smoking, you can lift the gun up to your face and blow the smoke away.

It's something that's been used a few times before, but it should really add to the immersion in this case.

If you've not watched a movie in VR before, the novelty of the big screen is cool, but the resolution will kill your enthusiasm pretty quickly.

Yes. Someone smarter than I would need to do the maths, but I imagine from the size of the smallest virtual screen option and the resolution of the headset display, the resulting effective resolution would probably be sub-SD. A novelty, but not a replacement for a TV.

Personally speaking, as the owner of a 1080p3D projector I'm good for high quality, big screen entertainment. It could still serve as a convenient feature for many people though. Being usable as a second way to watch content could be a major selling point for some.

Detect gun(controller) proximity to face(headset) + detect microphone input

DS games like Feel The Magic and Rub Rabbits did the blowing into the mic thing a lot. With the PSVR mic not pointed directly at the mouth, they might have to be extra forgiving with the blow-sound detection.
 
PSVR won't replace an HD TV for general content consumption but I think the novelty is more than just novelty for this feature. The Oculus Video/Cinema app on Gear VR actually produces some pretty decent image quality. Obviously you lose some clarity but it can be punchy and bold and look pretty crisp, as much as it's technically not a full HD image you're seeing.

I imagine PSVR's higher frame rate screen with full RGB sub pixels should produce an improved image over Gear VR and hopefully it won't suffer from the same smearing that Gear VR does. If it can do that, combined with the much greater comfort of the headset, it could be a very useable experience.

I really hope they get 3D Bluray playback sorted, I'd LOVE to see Gravity in the largest screen setting in 3D, and 3D in a headset is much better than in the cinema where there's often crosstalk and blurring as a result. I'd be disappointed if they don't have 3D bluray playback shortly after launch.

Edit: the main issue with Gear VR for this kind of usage is comfort (or lack thereof) and a very tight sweetspot in the lenses meaning clear field of view is quite small, so watching in Netflix for instance has the corners of the screen looking blurry. I believe PSVR has a wider sweetspot, and larger lenses to begin with, and of course it's more comfortable... So I'm optimistic it wont be as useless as some fear.

Edit: Also Shawn might have meant new releases not the 15 games that are gonna be patched on launch day, so effectively we still have 33 games on launch day.

Do you get motion sickness?

I was really interested in adr1ft until I saw a lot of reviews mentioning really bad motion sickness so I ended up passing on it on oculus. It sounds like it wasnt entirely designed with VR as a priority, eg the review I last saw said it doesnt use headset tracking its a fixed perspective.

Playing iomoon, I know it IS possible to make a similar style of game with movement mechanics that dont give you motion sickness. I would imagine it wont be long before another similar type of space game is released given how good a fit space is for VR due to the sense of scale and zero gravity (everything floating everywhere)
 
Really hope for a proper DTS-X / Dolby Atmos to headphone conversion for the cinema mode.
Object based sound would be perfect for VR.

Interesting thought.

I would guess that Atmos and DTS-X would only be available on PS4 Neo. I know that nothing prevents normal Blu-rays from using the new object-based codecs, but I'd be surprised if Sony went to the effort of retrofitting them into the standard PS4 player.

I assume that they would support the new surround sound formats on Neo, because they will be building a new UHD/HDR player anyway (I hope!).

As for converting Atmos or DTS-X to binaural for output to the headphones, that may be complicated. I guess the PS4 would need to process the bitstream to make it match whatever format they use for their positional audio and then pass it to the PSVR processing unit to be turned into binaural for the headphones.

Probably possible, but I think the ROI would be too low for them to put the effort in.

I wouldn't be surprised if any surround sound just got downmixed to stereo for the headset.

That wouldn't be very nice for VR.
I'm hoping them to at least take 5.1 or 7.1 and have them as sound sources around viewer.

This would be really cheap, adding binaural should be easy as well as theththethusfor games.

in small the screen will move as you move and will be centered. so you can play lying down looking at the ceiling

I've got a bit of a dilemma and could use some advice:

I've got confirmation of my 13th October Amazon delivery date, but I've ordered the standalone SKU rather than the bundle.
My reasoning was that I already had a camera and a move controller, so would just need to get a PSVR and an extra move.

I'll get a PS4 Neo if they come out soon at a sensible price, mainly as a UHD Blu-ray player. My launch day PS4 will then be donated to the kids, who will certainly want a camera, as Playroom is one of their favourite games.

This is going to leave me needing an extra move and a camera, so the bundle looks the better option.

Do you think Amazon are likely to give an option to switch to the bundle closer to launch? Anyone know how popular the bundle was relative to the standalone?

I doubt they will let you do that. I think you're better off watching for sales on the camera and picking one up separately.

Both Dirt Rally and Project CARS are discounted in the PSN summer sale.

An I right in thinking that a Project CARS PSVR patch has been pretty much ruled out?

And Dirt Rally: possible PSVR patch, but nothing confirmed as yet?

Battlefront is also discounted; might pick it up for the X-Wing PSVR mission patch.
