Reddit Compiles Definitive List of All NMS Missing Features/False Marketing +Sources

Are you sure though? Sean literally tweeted about how crazy it was so many people are playing. And I've seen that championed into a meme already, used to attack the company.

I'm guessing people were like "Sean stahp, its not gonna help".

Yea stop tweeting hype, and passive tweet.

It makes you wonder what they were working on all summer. If it wasn't ready in June, what did they add or take away? Maybe they stripped a bunch of features to add back in later? We'll never know unless Hello Games actually does some freaking PR.
I really think they'll patch in a lot of improvements. I hope so, anyway. Would be great to see the game evolve over time.

Crowbcat thread getting locked was weird and not cool.

Glad someone's compiled all the missing stuff more comprehensively than I did the other day. It honestly feels like there's half a game missing and the stuff they were showing in the first 2-3 trailers seems like No Man's Sky 2 its such a league ahead.

Don't preorder games.

Nah. Preordering is useful in a lot of different scenarios. If there is cause for skepticism on anything that was pre-ordered, then I would caution waiting for reviews/discussion before breaking the seal and voiding a return policy.

Yeah, they can be ridiculous on both sides of the spectrum. Yet it is kind of hard to fault people for not wanting to be lied out of their hard earned cash. I know I sure wish I had my $60 back, but it is what it is.

Gaming is an extremely, extremely harsh space to work in.

You gotta have adamantine skin to withstand the stress, long hours, low(er) pay, no job security, and criticism.

But that still doesn't mean you should overpromise.

I wonder if he apologizes, I mean, we at least got that from Molyneux. Even if it's in a roundabout, "I'm sorry you misunderstood" kind of way....Still holding out for that...

I see people that have an understanding of the realities of game development, they understand that talking about what you're working on does not equal promises, and grew tired of playing "gotcha!" about proposed features that don't make it into finished product years, if not decades, ago.

If you want prime examples of blind defense and total ignorance of software and hardware you should check out the thread of NMS not being able to run on CPUs without SSE4.1

Such understanding.

Please, you can be well versed in the realities of game development and still also be cognizant of proper PR, communications, and expectation management. Yes, things change in development all the time. How you handle communicating about it and managing public expectations is a big part of showing off anything that's still in-development - whether it be games, movies, hardware, anything.

This is not a difficult concept to understand, any several of us have gone through it in our careers in gaming or other entertainment mediums.

The thing is that people don't know what to expect and when you get these tidbits of information from the man himself in interviews, it sets a certain expectation.

I mean seriously, look at the trailers before the four official ones last month and the ones from before. They look nothing alike, sure I understand as the cycle goes along, things don't always pan out. But you don't just keep quiet about it either.

The game has been kept under wraps over it's development that people haven't seen much.

So it's like you are admitting there was recent media before the game launched that was completely different from the reveal trailers. I guess I don't understand the outrage. How can you be someone so invested in the game to notice all these changes in the game but not be paying attention enough to miss all the streams and trailers right before launch that showed what the final game was like.

I mean look at this thread we are arguing that eating another animal is a huge missing feature. There are still animals killing other animals but we are missing the chewing. Like really? Ok not every single thing is in but some of the missing things people are upset about are just head scratching. Maybe I don't get it sense I never got into the game. Looks cool but I know I would be bored quickly.

I guess the question that should be asked is how close did the game get to matching the core ideas Hello Games talked about in the beginning.

Why more people don't take a "believe it when I see it" approach to video games is beyond me.

That goes for both fans and the "professional" press. Hype culture in gaming has reached truly embarrassing levels.

"Oh no I have cancer... I remember hearing some guy talk about some medicine that could potentially cure cancer. He said it a year or so ago though... should I look into it and see if it actually works? Nah, I'm just gonna buy it and use it!"

But like others said... it is a game. And there is still potential of lots more being added.

"The reviews said that based on what it is it's great! I just didn't know that what it is, is Aspirin."

This is why reviews and judging are not based on what the final product is in a self-contained void, but what it set out to succeed and how it compares to other similar products.

They cut sandy planets from this game? Those actually looked really, really cool :
They might still be there? The sand environments are definitely there as I've seen large sections of it. But entire planets might just be super rare. It's really hard to say definitively with this game.

I really just thought this game was disappointing and too simple.

Then I saw the Crowb cat video and this was straight up deception.

Personally I don't take his videos too seriously, and, I think, it's maybe better do to so. Sure this one is fun despite the fact that it tells a lot of bad things about NMS and Sean in a horrible way (for Sean itself I mean).
BTW personally I'm always interested in buying this game as I like space-sims. I'll just wait some upgrades and a price drop.

To stay on the Crowbcat subject, I'm a bit scared that people, again, take this too seriously. I mean, it will surely takes some time to understand what happened really, and it feels strange to see all the Internet hating one guy this much in such a short time. And I'm not even sure that certain things shown in the video (like the E3/Planets folders issue) have been really confirmed.
There's even a lot of questionable facts, some people are saying that we CAN'T do this or that, some others are saying this is bullshit, well...

I just hope this video will not create a huge amount of hate towards Hello Games and his team. Just posting this cause it's like the NMS(gate?) is taking suddenly too much extent, I feel like I didn't see this since a long time.

It's a river or just a body of water? I mean does the water flows?

All the liquid surfaces I found are just small lakes and lagoons

Has anybody found a planed with seas that have waves?

There isn't like a current or anything, but it leads from a small enclosed lake to an ocean

Not to mention that the majority of consumers simply don't know or even care about the interworking's of the gaming industry. They shouldn't have to in order to shape their expectations before they buy a game. All most of them know is what they are shown through advertising.

Smaller studios like this could probably benefit from having some PR training, or seeking some veterans for mentoring. Tough business to be in, with so many people getting very emotionally involved. Hopefully some devs take note of these occurrences and can learn from the mistakes made here.

Well then it's not much of a river huh?
The water wasn't flowing visibly in the 2014 trailer either, so that's not really fair :P

Would be awesome to get some kind of lapping waves effect. Probably not possible with how they're generated.

There's no surface physics or flowing water in the game AFAIK. The surface ripples are very simplistic, and you can often see repeating patterns reminiscent of PS2 era water. I hope this is something they will improve through updates; it would certainly help sell the immersion of the worlds more.

LOL watch em drop in and try to nitpick if it's an actual river.

I mean, the word "river" has an actual definition. As in flowing water. If you just have a bunch of static water in a straight line, doesn't really seem like much of a river.

This is another one of those "aesthetically correct but functionally wrong" kind of arguments that people will pick which ever side wins their argument.

Just like with how game development is, things change. Just because you had time one time you might not have time later on.

Right before the launch, the trailers did not show any of the features cut or that the features were still in the game. Since Sean didn't say anything, it was assumed it was still in the game. Did you see those 4 trailers, explore, fight, trade, whatever the last one is?

I mean, we don't expect the trailers to cover everything so we assume that what was said is still valid. Not all of it is headscratching. Sure maybe for you it is. It's like saying you like cake without chocolate but some people want the chocolate as well as the cake. Just because you have your own preferences, don't force it down onto others.

If people need to datamine the game to see what the player looks like when it was promised you can see other players to verify what you look like on national television, there might be something wrong about the way the game is marketed / the statements that were made.

Well that is actually quite some list and i love the game. Bought it completely blind though. Saw a trailer or two thought it looked okay but the idea of interstellar travel, exploring and finding weird planets was enough for me to get it. I understand the dissapointment though but since the game is selling pretty wel i expect regular patches en content. Well not me but thats the plan they say, unless you know..they're lying again i guess.

I might just make a petition for this, the lies are too much and honestly someone should sue them for false advertising and misleading info.

You still said that the game is "perfctly functional and playable"

Talk about hyperbole, am i right?

I didn't answer to the comparison, but the bolded words

You made the (ill) comparison to begin with. And yes, NMS is actually a functional and playable product albeit missing advertised features and instability on the PC/PS4, both of which if the experimental branch on PC is anything to go by, will become much more stable once the patch goes live.

Sonic 06 is a nearly unplayable train wreck, essentially a retail alpha version of the game.

How much more spelling out do you need to realize your comparison is idiotic?

They really didn't. All of Molyneux' games are much more "game" than NMS is.

For fucks sake man, that's not the point. That's a strawman. The point is that Murray lied about his games significantly less than Molyneux. It doesn't matter how good or bad the games were.

I think Fable 1 was probably a better game than NMS. But the amount of complete bullshit Molyneux spewed about the entire Fable experience hugely, HUGELY overshadows what Murray said about NMS (and mainly delivered on, by the by, regardless of whether it's fun or 'good' or not).

You really have become something, Bedlam. Your rhetoric has just become more and more vitriolic in the last week, day on day.

You're right, but unfortunately the Sean Molyneux train has already left the station

Evidently.

Ran across these guys recently. Blue and weird.

Nice - the tentacle/jellyfish type is amazing and never crops up enough. I befriended a tiny white/pink jellyfish creature for a while. I never saw another one on the planet. It was hopping at great speed around a field of tall grass. It was awesome.

I haven't even had a chance to play it yet but this stuff is really making me not even want to open it. I may just return it.

For the same price I got this limited edition, I could buy Luigis Mansion + Animal Crossing 3DS, plus Lego City Undercover and Wind Waker HD for Wii U. Those 4 games vs this...

Planets do not rotate on their axis, moons do not orbit their planets, and planets do not orbit a sun. There isn't even a sun, it's just decoration on the sky box.

Shouldn't those be like literally the ONLY thing the game should have at 100%? I mean...if a game is about travelling around space and exploring solar systems....why not making sure every SOLAR system has at least a SUN? And if a planet has a moon make that moon orbite the planet. That's the kind of things that a "space exploration game" shouldn't lack...it's the most basic thing people on this planet knows about the universe "moons orbits planets, planets orbits stars".

I have no horse in this race. I was never particularly hyped for No Man's Sky, and I'm not planning to buy it in the near future.

But I still can't help feeling like the anger is a bit unwarranted. It's exceedingly clear that Hello Games had to rush to get this thing out the door. And this is after it was delayed multiple times at the last minute. They're a small dev that took on an exceedingly ambitious project. Of course they had to cut stuff out.

Thus, I'm inclined to believe that the guy wasn't lying. He was genuinely excited about his game and a bit overly hopeful about what they could do.

And, y'know... This is why reviews exist. It's not like he asked for Kickstarter money or anything. Everyone had the opportunity to read critical impressions before purchasing. (I'm not 100% familiar with when the review embargo was lifted compared to when the game launched, but, well, this is why preorders are dumb in most cases.)

My disappointment with the game is mostly to do with the flight mechanics. Having the planets all so close together makes the space flight seem more like a loading screen than a simulation of space flight, I think I would have prefered jumping between orbits and some more realistic physics.

The in atmosphere flight was immediately disappointing when I jumped in the ship (had to change the controls to be the correct way for flight - should have been a red flag) and tried to fly under an arch, only to find there was a floor I couldn't close to the ground.
