GAF Gamescom 2016 Impressions

Hello! I just got back from my first day at Gamescom and I thought this would be a good idea! (And a break from the 6th No Mans Sky thread).

Basically if any Gaffers at Gamescom played anything they feel is worth talking about or if any Gaffers who aren't there have questions about any games at Gamescom, feel free to ask!

I'll start...

Gravity Rush 2 PlayStation's booth was pretty big but didn't actually have a huge number of big titles to play. Thankfully it did have a playable segment from GR2. As a huge fan of the first game, I was happy and sad to see there was no real line.

- everything's bigger: the city, the colours, the combat, the storyboards, the presentation. It clearly has a higher budget.
- return of the whiff: well not quite, anyone who's played GR1 will know the minor frustration of slightly missing a gravity kick. It feels forced but it's partially fixed, however it does rear its head sometimes.
- frame drops: big ones, especially when there's lots of breakable objects. No way around it, hope it gets fixed.

Bound

Won't say much about this and I know it's already out but I loved the short segment I played. The mo-cap/animation is incredible and it actually has proper platformimg elements (eg. Wall jumps)

EVE Valkyrie VR

My first go at VR at the PlayStation booth and I was left a little disappointed. I had headphones on and wouldn't have known I was on a show floor but I just didnf feel immersed. The game was basic and the control were sort of annoying/buggy.

Maybe my headset wasn't on straight but everything was a little blurry/jaggy to me.

FWIW, I saw very good reactions in the line to Batman VR.

KH3: Fragmentary Passage

Quite pretty, next-gen Kingdom Hearts basically. Controls nice but not as well as the PS2 titles or the 3DS remake included with 2.8

Notes

I played some World of Final Fantasy which I was really excited for but the game bugged out when I was playing I think. Girl didn't know what was happening.

Any questions, let me know! Overall it was pretty decent but I didn't feel like there was a huge lot to play, think there might have been some extra stuff for press.

Wait what, didn't know about this. Could you extend your impression on this ?

Thanks for the impressions. Did you get to play FFXV?

Yes, sorry. Forgot to mention it as there was a lot of stuff at Square Enix (best booth IMO).

It was solid to me. I didn't play Duscae but I'm aware of the rollercoaster it's been in terms of production, eg. The E3 showing.

I got to play about 15-20 minutes (could've played longer) of that Venetian looking town. Really pretty, lots to do, lots of NPCs to interact with.

I also did some gameplay in a sort of deserty area and that was pretty good too. Combat felt much better than how it looked at E3.

What do you mean? It sort of felt simplified a little and at the same more difficult to use. In the demo, she has 4 magic powers: Fire, ice, lightning and heal.

Instead of like the 352 remake where you can select your powers with the dpad before you hit triangle. You have to hit triangle first in to a drop down menu then press it again to activate the power. Also, if you get hit mid-combat the menu closes and you have to do it again.

Did you play some Gwent?

You're all reminding me of games I did play. Yes, i did! Huge fan of The Witcher 3 so it was fun to sit somewhere Witcher themed.

It would take a long time to explain the Matches j played but I'll say this: all the art is redone, very well I'll add. Very atmospheric and dramatic art. All the effects and textures are improved eg. Biting frost.

There's way more instances or conditional powers that cArds have. Think Hearthstone, like if you're playing against an elf, play another card etc.

They're basically just expanding the base game from Witcher and giving it AAA production values (in terms of card games).

Sorry! Forgot one more! I know this game is anticipated by some Gaffers.

Hunger! I played it, except it's called "Little Nightmares" now.

It's essentially a fixed camera (from what I played) stealth game. Looks eerily handcrafted/realistic. Bandai Namco picked it up to publish.

Sweet. That's good to hear. I'm excited to see how it can compete in the CCG genre outside of Witcher 3.

I see this thread is mostly for people who attended. Agony really caught my eye, did they have a booth? Anyone talk with the devs?

Awesome, thanks! Wondering how much more they can polish up in two months.

Any impressions from the new content for Fast Racing Neo?

I didn't see it there. I spent a bit of time at Nintendos booth which is where I thought it'd be?

Nope, sorry. I went to every hall and checked out nearly every stall. I didn't see many devs with their games. That might be reserved for business areas.

And yes the idea of the thread is for people at the event that gets hands on press time of for people not at the event to ask.

I'll add that the IQ was pretty good in the demo too. As in better than those awful screenshots. No idea what it was running on but we were given PS4 controllers.

If more GAF people were or will be able to try out PSVR, any impressions are appreciated, still not sure if I should cancel or keep my preorder (I already had PSVR two times on my head).

I know I've said my piece and without being inflammatory, I'm cancelling my pre-order. I don't need that sort of experience yet and I think the technology will improve hugely over the next few years. I was just left feeling a little empty after my demo.

Ah, that's nice to hear. Yeah, Square's screenshots for the game have been really weird, lol.

I'm a little confused here. Are you talking about magic when you refer to using menus? Can't you just hold L1 to bring up the shortcut menu for instant casting?

Is Zelda still not up?

There was a black box/theatre looking thing with the BotW logo on it and a very bored lady sitting outside. Assume it was a presentation/gameplay video.

L1 definitely didn't bring up a menu. Might get re-added. If you were fighting and needed to swap spells, that was how you did it.

It definately had a shortcut menu at E3:

I'll share my impressions of FFXV

Graphics looked semi-bad, I thought it was rather okay except for the very blurry and washed out environment textures and the bad draw distance. A friend went with me and said it looks "shit".
The combat was great though! I really liked it, Noctis controls great and the friend commands are well implemented.
The car is pretty weird, it has a manual mode and an automatic mode.
Manual mode let's Noctis drive but the only difference towards the automatic one is that you control the speed and the turning. It's on rails and you can't go off the road or crash into anything, since the game will push you away from that.
VA was pretty good, even though I noticed some weird cringey over-acting at some points. Only in Prompto's and Gladio's lines though. This goes for both the English and German VA.
The thing that shocked me is that the game has Ubisoft towers... you go into inns and talk to the barkeeper, which updates your map with points of interest.
