They reported a crime that didnt happen. Thats a feliny in the US as well. If tables were flipped, brazilian athletes would get the same treatment.

That said, its not like they will go to jail or anything. A fine. Maybe some community service and thats it.

Brazil will probably drop the charges, they just don't want their name tarnished by these swimmers during their celebration.

Filing a false police report is a felony in most US states. I imagine anyone doing the same there would be treated much the same. You can't just fabricate an alleged crime let alone an alleged armed robbery, requiring police investigative crime to cover up your own misbehaviour, They deserve everything they get.

You can report crimes that you thought happened, even if they didn't. Intention is important.

I just watched the gas station video footage. There was absolutely no robbery.

The chief of police said that two girls that previously were with athletes helped in the case.

So it's actually pretty close to the Lochte's version. I am not saying I believe it until I see the video. But this is basically a uniformed personnel (not cop) show them a gun to make them pay up, and didn't take their phone and id.

oh pls

I've read over and over that they didn't file any police report. They got queries after the media ran with a story.

This is a far cry from someone dialing 911, then filing a report for a crime that didn't happen.

Anyways, I don't give a shit what happens to the swimmers. I'm just talking from the cost/benefit perspective for Brazil here. Whether they embellished or not, it's a situation where a story took on a life of its own and likely got out of hand. Worst case they are dumbasses and should apologize. Dragging people off planes because stories don't match and potentially prosecuting for something petty like this isn't worth the international attention IMO.

Not sure if sarcasm, but I'm pretty sure mainland China is king in that regard right now.

This is a joke right? American's don't have a monopoly on poor behavior abroad.

You must not travel much.

Literally, huh?

Caught some :)

Was hoping the literally being in italics would give it away. Americans abroad are very well behaved compared to most nations, which is why the situation is funny to me. Both countries I've lived in have had extensive American tourists and you can't beat them, really. They've got money and they're polite, if a bit loud by nature.

The swimmers were up to something for sure but nothing that warrants getting their passports seized. Brazil has a million problems and all they can focus on is this? They are literally one step better than North Korea.

What is this bullshit? What does this have to do with anything? :)

Have we started a betting pool on what these guys are covering up? It seems like the robbery story is a way to cover up a secret transaction of several hundred dollars

I'm guessing it's either synthetic drugs or some kind of exotic prostitution. Maybe Lochte isn't as straight as we think?

As I said before, I've been in this situation. Most recently, the cops nabbed someone breaking into cars and they found some of my mail on him. The cops pounded on my door to let me know and tell me to make sure my car was ok, and then gave me some forms and said to call if I wanted to press charges. I didn't, obviously (since the guy had my address and would know who provided evidence), and when he was convicted there was nothing about mail theft. Even though they had the evidence themselves and could have easily charged him.

But there's a yuuuge difference between breaking and entering and aggravated robbery while impersonating a police officer. Also, in your case the police were able to convict the guy without your testimony. In this situation all the police have is this story. They need to interview the people involved, probably several times, to get a clear understanding and then charge the guy who pulled a gun on them.

No. Why they should be stripped of their medals? Makes no sense...

Why shouldn't they. If the dude lied he brought disrepute to country ( that is already in hot water) and created a diplomatic situation that has brought about further negative connotations.

As an Olympian, he practically an ambassador, if an ambassador shames their country, he is stripped of his title and position.

Unless someone rats them out, we will never know. I'm guessing it was sex work and hard partying.

Wow, what a twist.

Well done America. Literally the only country whose citizens behave poorly when travelling abroad. Shame on you.

What a weird thing to make up.

Apparently they didnt at first. Said something about it in the village. Media caught wind of it. Police went to question them, and the report was filled.

Your world view is depressingly inaccurate.

So you want the IOC to strip them from their medals? Maybe if the US association would ask them to do that but even then, I don't know. You don't have to be a gentleman to be a good athlete.

My point is that the police will drop a case if the victim doesn't want to press charges. If the people whose car this guy broke into said they weren't going to press charges, the police would have let him go. I've been involved in the aftermath of a mugging where the police left after the victim (a friend) told them he didn't want to file a report and wanted to just move on from it. And for the record, adding my mail theft charges to the rest of his B&E charges (or whatever they technically were called) would have extended his sentence and been an even bigger win for the PD. The DA wants to stick as much on each perp as they can, it makes them look good.

The big problem here is that Lochte and company wasted Brazilian state resources with their stupid gas station piss party lie. That is bad, yes. But my point this whole time is that those resources didn't have to be wasted in the first place if the Brazilian police had waited for Lochte to come to them and file a report before they investigated it. When you get your caseload from daytime TV, you're going to have a lot more misses than hits, I would imagine.

They didn't file anything. And did they say the robbery happen at the gas station? I don't see how the gas station video is relevant

At first I was thinking "why would someone call attention to being held up while most likely banging Brazilian prostitutes and doing copious amounts of cocaine" but then I remembered that 'someone' was Ryan Lochte and suddenly it made a lot more sense.

http://fox61.com/2016/08/18/three-american-swimmers-will-talk-to-police-thursday/

He said that around 6 am on Sunday, Lochte, along with fellow swimmers Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and Jimmy Feigen, stopped at a gas station in Barra da Tijuca, a suburb of Rio where many Olympic venues are located. One of the swimmers tried to open the door of an outside bathroom. It was locked. A few of the swimmers then pushed on the door and broke it. A security guard appeared and confronted them, the official said. The official says the guard was armed with a pistol, but he never took it out or pointed it at the swimmers

According to the official, the gas station manager then arrived. Using a customer to translate, the manager asked the swimmers to pay for the broken door. The official says after a discussion, they did pay him an unknown amount of money and left.

Police plan an afternoon news briefing on the incident. A message seeking comment was left with Lochte's attorney.

Typical Latin America, unfortunately.

TYPICAL LATIN AMERICA RIGHT?

This place could use a Latin American moderator.

Where's the USOC bagman who goes around paying off locals when the athletes cause a ruckus? Maybe it's cause I'ma college football fan, but i thought this was just standard practice.

I dont know, sounds like Lochte left out the part where he was being a shit head, and embellished the story about a gun to his head.

But it does sound like a dude in a uniform used a gun to intimidate cash out of them, though we'll have to see how that actually played out.

Still not sure how any of this rises to the level of yanking people off a plane.

This is still down to the Brazilians trying to save face. I mean like, every southern europeans who came to Austin for the F1 race would have had their passports revoked for peeing in public and breaking shit.

I think Lochte and company lied to avoid any trouble with the USA comittee. I mean, they could receive punishment just like other athletes, like the gymnast from Netherlands that was banned from the final because he exaggerated at a party. Their participation was over but you never know, and of course, public image. I don't believe there is something shady like drugs or "exotic" prostitution.

Real shame, I hope its some lost in translation type situation, and Lochte just wanted to jazz up the incident and make it cooler then it sounded.

Because now its looking like brown guy did something to us, to cover my bad behavior.

Did Lochte leave early because his events were over or because someone told him to get the hell out? Still trying to figure the situation out.
