Still not sure how any of this rises to the level of yanking people off a plane.

The moment you start publicly claiming people dressed up as police officers pull your taxi over and rob you at gunpoint I believe.

I agree tho, that from the looks of it, there's not much to this incident and should really end up with very little if any punishment at all.

This is still down to the Brazilians trying to save face. I mean like, every southern europeans who came to Austin for the F1 race would have had their passports revoked for peeing in public and breaking shit.

Because their lies severely affect the images of the games and the country, just read the first few pages. And it could be a crime. That part is still not clear to me, if they submitted a report.

Then how could they have helped with the case? IDing the taxi or the route they took?
No idea. All the police said is that they helped. Not how.

this thread could use a title change
Yes.

I dont know, sounds like Lochte left out the part where he was being a shit head, and embellished the story about a gun to his head.

But it does sound like a dude in a uniform used a gun to intimidate cash out of them.

But they didnt get in real trouble for peeing in public or breaking shit.

They did it for telling their friends and eventually lying to the police about it.

All they had to do was shut the fuck up. Instead they brought all of this to themselves.

Yes. But apparently the police don't want to make a big fuss about the fact that they were with two girls. Nevertheless, the chief of police mentioned that two girls helped the investigations.

The government shouldn't have the power to punish you if you make their country sound bad in an interview. In my opinion.

I think he already have that flight booked, but who knows.

My country's newspaper reported that Judge Keyla Blank has confirmed that authorities seize the passports of Lochte and Feigen.

They suggested that Lochte lawyer and father told him to get on a plane ASAP before that could happen.

But they could have booked a flight that day as well

Pretty much this. The video they showed DID NOT show the person that ordered them to leave the taxi. One of them was raising his hands. SOMETHING happened outside of the cameras view and it's clear the Brazilian government is trying to twist this as "nothing happened" when something did happen.

There's a video showing that not much happened at all, and certainly no robbery.

The video shows something happened outside the cameras view. Unless their is another video I'm not aware of.

True, look what Hope Solo did. She badmouthed the games with some silly Zika tweet, and she was just fine. Well, other than brazilian fans shouting ehhhhhhh zika at her.
But these men could have committed a crime to save their own faces at the expense of Brazil, which is why the brazilian authorities are investigating so hard.

Sure, but they told a tall tale in the Olympic village, Ryan Lochte's mom told the story to media.

I'm not saying it's a good look, but it's not like they were seeking attention for this initially. It blew up into a story, it didn't start with them filing a police report.

I still want to see what evidence actually exists about what happened before and after the video given the rumors that have been swirling about hookers and drugs from two days ago.

They reported a crime that didnt happen. Thats a feliny in the US as well. If tables were flipped, brazilian athletes would get the same treatment.

That said, its not like they will go to jail or anything. A fine. Maybe some community service and thats it.

Um, but a crime did happen? A security guard pulling a gun on guys at a gas station and forcing them to empty their wallets is robbery. Even if they did damage the bathroom, you can't hold a gun to them and steal their money as compensation. ??

Wait where is the poof of this now. ? All I saw was an uneventful video

All these morons had to do was tell the story that the tape tells when the rumors started swirling. Say they weren't mugged, they just got "strongarmed" (or something) by some guys at a gas station. Who knows if they actually were strongarmed or if they were going around breaking shit, but if they had told that story from the beginning nobody would have given the whole episode a second thought.

But then the police turn up and ask about the crime. If they had told the truth then they would have been fine.

I realize that this is illegal in Brazil. For the seventeenth time in this thread, I'll say that I was comparing what happened here to what would happen in the US in order to explain why Americans in this thread were bewildered as to this series of events.

Way to overreact Brazil

Hmm, I don't know if I would call it an overreaction. Personally, I think they just lied to friend and didn't expect it to become this big. But it did get this big. So you have a well known set of athletes claiming that the police, or someone posing as the police threatened them. That's a pretty serious investigation. Not because of the robbery but because you have a worldwide reported case that the police (or someone posing as them) is around the Olympics at a time where people are at high alert.

They got yanked because the story isn't jiving and there is no fucking way they would have come back voluntarily, especially if the story doesn't hold water.

I feel like this whole thing should be fixed with a public apology if they just made it up. Jail or whatever else people are talking about is just going to be more drama that it's worth.

Well, we still don't have a complete clear picture of what exactly happened. Got to wait to see if brazilian authorities can tell us exactly what happened. I imagine nothing much will happen even if the americans were in the wrong, they just want to expose them.

Damn, Lochte and his mom screwed this all up. I'm all america as fuck, but nothing wrong with how Brazil handled this.

Good point. I think that this has been blown out of proportion much because of lochte.

Lochte leaving early and the rest staying quiet in their questioning disnt help either.

Way to overreact Brazil

How is Brazil overreacting? An athlete on the world stage said he was assaulted and had a gun held to his head. They did the right thing in investigating. Douchebag Lochte and his friends clearly lied about it, but this is on them, not the Brazilian police.

It's already more drama than it's worth. Brazil yanked them off of planes and seized their passports.

Who gives a shit. Just send them home.

This video doesn't help the Brazilians case at all. Sure Lochte and crew were likely being assholes, but none of that is on video and you could justify just about everything they have claimed if you just look at the facts from their perspective. Yes they were pulled out of a taxi. Yes the guy detaining them had a firearm. Yes they were sat down on a curb, with hands up, by the guy with a firearm. Yes they gave him cash to be allowed to leave. Pulling people off of planes for this is embarrassing, they should have just released the facts to save face and left it at that.

With that said Lochte is really reflecting poorly on Americans here with his behavior, both during and after the incident. His swimming bros still in the country can't be too happy about things either.

Edit: Also, I'd love to see the rest of the video footage that was conveniently left out. Interesting that half of the stations fuel pumps weren't being monitored by the camera, and that the guy with the weapon happened to be standing in that area.

Dragging people off planes severely affects the images of the games and the country.

So people here think it's pretty normal to make up stories to the police, making them waste resources investigating crimes that didn't happen. Nice.

There are several issues here. The apparent fabrication of the incident is one. The other is the fact that the state wasted these resources to begin with. Their response should have been "file a report and we'll get right on it." When they refused to file a report, say "yeah ok then buddy, I'm sure you were mugged." The waste of state resources on this is on both parties. That's what happens when you start a federal case based on a vague daytime TV interview.

Actually the amount of money might be an important aspect. If it's like $1000 dollars for minor damage then I would say than that is kind of a shake-down.

It can't be more clear than this

So basically this was completely normal until they lied about it. When you're in a foreign country, be on your best behavior, if someone does you a favor and lets you pay a few dollars to get you out of a situation, you thank them and go on your merry way. You do not shoot your mouth off about it. What a bunch of fucking morons.
