Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

http://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/inputs/input-lag

Yea, I just saw they put up 4k native results for lag!! The sony x800d is running 4:4:4 at 4k at 35ms, not bad at all as long as I turn vsync off.

The interesting thing with these new 4k results is running any samsung at 4k with 4:4:4 shows higher lag then the sony, about 38ms is what they are showing for the samsung and the samsungs have pwm too which I hate.

Also the pixel response is twice as fast on the sony versus any of the 2016 samsungs which is good for gaming.

Rtings is killing it with all this great info, easily the best site for in-depth tv reviews, by far!!

Looks like the 43x800d is going to be my 4k pc monitor ....

The HDR should be fine and still noticeable, but with that peak brightness level, don't expect to have your socks knocked off.

For a 43 inch, this is the tv to get. Seems like a great tv at a fine price point

For a 49, go with the samsung ks8000 or a vizio p 50 for the extra 200 dollars.
I wouldn't recommend the vizio or Samsung. Both have a shit ton of input lag at 4k with hdr on.

thats what people and all the reviews are saying except a 55" ks8000 cost $1100 more in Canada then the x850D, I might as well get a X930D for that price. Plus I used to get all the samsung electronic but done with them, every samsung electroncis that I got for the last few years were shit. Just today someone has posted on the avsforum today saying that there are 2 revision forthe X850D, first is made in China, second is the better one with more vibrant color from Mexico. Mine is made in Mexico so maybe there is some truth to the story. I don't notice the greyish black from that revie on rtings, even the demo unit at bestbuy is showing the black just as good as the other brand of the same class. There is artifacts when I turn on 120hz for the x850d, but I only notice them during loading screen, when playing in doom, everything move so fast and smooth I hardly ever notice them. Changing the picture mode to graphics also reduce the artifacts.

Black levels can be hard to see when you're looking at them at the store. For me its more obvious when I'm at home watching in a dark environment. I have a friend that couldnt tell the difference and asked me to point it out to him. Now that he sees it, it bothers him. If you dont see it, then dont worry about it. Just enjoy your new tv.

According to new tests done today, there are some that dont have bad lag at 4k with hdr on.

Thanks, for the link. This is a great chart. For the price point I want I'm still looking good for that ks8000 Samsung. Scored 9.1. I can live with the specs.

I currently have a 32" 720p TV. Never got around to upgrading to a 1080p TV. Not really sure how big I should go. I thought 43" sounded pretty good, but if I can get an extra 6" for just $150, that seems like a good deal. I guess I'll go for the KS800 if there are any deals that bring it down to around that same $800 range.

Guess I need to buy an HDMI 2 cable too for my laptop-TV connection.

I would wait for after the holidays. Black Friday deals are usually crappy models. Once we hit 2017, retailers will be needing shelf space for the new models. That 2016 model youre looking at is what I want. Has all the specs needed and I suspect will drop to the 1100 dollar range early next year.

Oh dude you are in for a treat my friend. Any tv you buy now should be a lot better than your current 32" 720p tv.

So on Sunday I bought the 49" version of this set and my initial impression is that it looks terrible. I'm wondering if perhaps I need to calibrate it or something... When i say terrible I mean that the image is significantly less impressive than what I'm used to when playing on a 55" Sony W950B. Anyone able to comment on this? maybe it's a preference thing or something. As it stands I will be returning it this weekend.

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but for those looking at the lower-end 43" 4K HDR sets like these, I have the LG 43UH6500, which can be had for $500-550, with a number of retailers offering the $50 magic remote for free (I believe stores like B&H might still be doing this). You can sell it pretty much for that price and get your all-in cost down to $450-500 shipped.

Anyway, I've had it for a few weeks. I bought it as an office replacement to use as a single monitor solution for my PC and consoles. My PC and this TV had some interface issues with just HDMI (signal getting lost completely when quitting out of games/sleep), but using a DP-to-HDMI adapter solved it, and it resolves 4K60 4:4:4 with no issues.

Brightness is not a problem for me, but I only sit 2-3' from it (depending on how intently I'm looking at content), so my settings are on the low end. At higher backlight settings, you almost need sunglasses to prevent retina burn. Colors on it are quite good, although I would say that yellows in particular seem a bit muted compared to other IPS panels I've used (mainly my Dell U2711, which this replaced).

On non-HDR content on PC and console, I use the Game preset for everything. Fewer image calibration options, but input lag is imperceptible to me. This is why I was hoping the Forza Horizon 3 had HDR enabled so that I could see if that made any noticeable difference to me for games.

Native 4K PC gaming has been a revelation. Those who say 4K doesn't matter haven't seen Forza Motorsport 6 Apex in 4K60. It's truly stunning, and it's what made me buy the digital PC/XB1 Forza Horizon 3 vs. my traditional route of buying physical.

4K HDR content like Deadpool looks superb, but can't touch OLED or the more advanced HDR sets. I knew this going in. But again, for five bills, being able to play/stream everything available at the moment makes that pill an easy one to swallow.

Sorry for the long post... it's important that folks keep their expectations in check with this size range, but personally, if space is limited or you want a desktop replacement/hybrid solution now, they're great. I'm really happy with my purchase, and do hope that the high-end technology trickles down into this range and smaller.

According to new tests done today, there are some that dont have bad lag at 4k with hdr on.

So the LG B6 has its lowest lag figure when at 4k HDR, good for those with that set but strange the E6 doest behave the same.

Hope we get figures for the LG EF9500, if that comes in with sub 40ms lag in 4k Hdr i will be looking at that instead of the KS8000 in november.

EDIT: That B6 figure has got to be a mistake right?

So it's a solid 34 average no matter what you are doing. I call that consistency. It's not amazing. But I'll enjoy almost anything non competitive as long as it doesn't have added input lag like tomb raider on Xbox one. That shit made me rage on any display

Very happy I picked up the x800d then

Almost got that 6300 which has amazing 4K+HDR lag, but it's color range is a LoT lower than the Sony for a budget tv

Yup, its consistent which is good and it does not have pwm and its pixel response is 30% faster then samsungs.

34ms isnt bad if your pc gaming. Console gaming I would want lower like 20ms because you cant turn vsync off etc.

Some of the rtings results for 4K native + HDR are weird...

B6 gets 38.2ms but the E6 is at 67.5 ms?

Iffy results

B6 review said:
Update 09/12/2016: With a 4k resolution and a HDR signal (with and without 4:4:4 color subsampling), when the input lag is tested, the result is not stable and cycle from 38.2ms to 54.8ms. This is a strange result and during our testing, some TV did take time to stabilize (+/- 5 seconds), but the LG B6 was the only one that did this very long cycling.

I think VA panel like the one in x800d would be better for black level. LG uses IPS

Got my 43" model today and took it for a quick test drive. Some impressions:
- Assembling was super easy and could be done alone without hassle. Just use a level to make sure the TV is 100% even on the stand.
- Setup is like any other Android TV, quick and straightforward.
- The TVs ATV OS feels slightly more sluggish than my Shield TVs ATV OS.
- 4K looks crazy good, watched some demo footage I downloaded yesterday via my Shield TV & Plex. It's kinda incredible how much depth it adds to the picture. Didn't find any demo footage on the TV itself though but I didn't look too hard.
- Bit finicky to use in my current PC setup (1x 1440p as main, 1x 1080p portrait) as Windows doesn't scale back the taskbar when switching back from the 4K as primary to the 1440p as primary. Also: desktop icons are all over the place. I'm sure there is a tool to save the positions and reload them by a simple batch. Will figure it out.
- Also make sure to use HDMI 2 or 3 if you want 4k60 4:4:4 and enable Enhanced HDMI in the TV settings as the rtings review tells you. Otherwise you are stuck with 4:2:0.
- Played some Rocket League and God Eater at 4k60. I didn't really notice the input lag.
- Screensize is might fine for my use case. I have the TV set up at the end of my bed, so I'm like 2m away from the screen.
- I took the Nvidia HDR demo for a quick spin too but given that it was afternoon and these are only like 4 screenshots, I am not necessarily blown away yet. The highlights in the picture (lights, sky, fire) definitely stood out however. Will watch some Netflix HDR tonight in the dark and will report back.

- One super sweet thing for my specific setup is that each remote can control both, the TV and Shield! Even power off both. My mind was literally blown because I feared I had to use two remotes like back in the day when I still used to watch sat TV as a kid haha. Comfy af
- Sound is rather flat and pretty silent @40% if you have a lot of ambient noise going on but I will use headphones most of the time anyway so I don't mind too much. I am no audiophile in any way though so take my sound impressions for what you will.
- Image does lose contrast pretty quickly if you are viewing from a weird angle. It's perfectly fine if you use it in bed alone or with two people but I think after that point the screen is too small anyway.

Thanks for these impressions, it sounds like the right choice for me. Il sit 2m away as well. Waiting for my xbox one s to arrive (oct 13) before i pull the trigger.

Are you updated to the latest firmware? The only way to do this is set up wi-fi and turn the TV off. It will then download updates. It will not update while the TV is on.

I'm not totally sure if you ask like that? Checking for updates was the first thing I did and it said I had the latest. Will check manually, I have PKG6.0402.0001EUA

Oh wait... had a brain fart! That's the way Vizio does it. I have a Sony x830c and Vizio 49c-1.. got it mixed up.

nevermind my comment.

Looking like I'll have to wait another year or so for a comparable yet affordable upgrade from my KDL-60w850b. Looking for 65-70" 4K HDR with low input lag with HDR enabled, but I'm not dropping 5k+ on one right now. Must remain patient.

good stuff... it matches Polish HDTV mag ratings for some models.

Also, rtings did not update original reviews with lag score updates. XD800 should get much better rating now... especially since it has same lag result even outside the game mode, which means picture is going to be fantastic.

. I'm wondering if perhaps I need to calibrate it or something...

I can't comment on anything else you're saying. But calibrating a new TV should not be a question of 'perhaps.'

It's mandatory. Especially with all the bullshit settings, that need to be turned off or adjusted. You have to spend at least 30 minutes going through everything. And then making sure your connected device, be a PS4 or whatnot, is properly communicating with it, which we know sometimes does not happen even on automatic settings. RGB Range, limited or full for example needs to be specifically set. The automatic setting sometimes doesn't work. Also, overscan. All TV's overscan by default, and you need to deactivate. For example, on my samsung 16:9 overscans, I have to set it to Screen Fit to get a 1 to 1 pixel mapped image.

Check the TV's brand and get a baseline suggestion on settings such as color temperature, contrast, brightness, sharpness etc.

But yeah, no TV - when first hooked up, is ever right. There is always numerous things wrong on default settings. And you need to check the devices that are connected with it as well.

Has anyone here hooked the x800d up to an Xbox one S? The Xbox is saying it doesn't support her...
We had a user in here who hooked it up without any problem and watched UHD HDR Bluray using the One S. Posted pics too, so it should be easy to find. I can't remember whether he said to enable anything in particular.

Right here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=216559744&postcount=354
Perhaps try HDMI 2 or 3? Those seem to be "special"

E: Nvm then. Seems it was the Enhanced HDMI option then! Why would they set it to off by default tho?

Has anyone here hooked the x800d up to an Xbox one S? The Xbox is saying it doesn't support her...

I was trying to figure out why not too but I eventually figured it out.

Go to home and down to settings, external inputs, HDMI signal format and select enhanced format. this works for HDMI inputs 2 and 3 so make sure its on one of those.. all the settings (minus 3D) will be supported now.

EDIT - just beaten

I think VA panel like the one in x800d would be better for black level. LG uses IPS
Like I said, I use it for both PC and console, so IPS is great for things like photo editing and other non-gaming PC apps. I realize this is a Sony TV thread in the gaming subforum though. :)

Where can I find these in the UK? the model number is not in the UK.
Sony KD-43XD80**

** = Region code
05 = DE/AT (perhaps more)

I think 88 might be UK. Just look for the "XD80" model in Europe.
Perhaps should be added to the first post since it's been asked a few times now

Just pulled the trigger on the 55' x850d, and I'm loving it. The one thing I do find mildly annoying is that I set up my Shaw box through the tv and it has this sleek overlay it uses. However, it went ahead and decided to list every single channel Shaw offers, whether you have the channel or not. I also can't organise based by HD channels anymore. But besides that, I'm in love with thing.

Glad to hear it. Make sure you calibrate that thing though. Default settings are always ass. And try to figure out what the TV defaults to, RGB limited or full. My guess, like with most TV's, is that it defaults to limited. Also be sure to turn off overscan. And make sure you turn on enhanced HDMI.

Sony better be doing some kind of firmware update for all their tv's this year if their big selling point is supposed to be HDR, 90-110 ms of input lag isn't going to cut it.

Lord knows I'll stick with being on laptop or simply 1080P if they don't, my x930D be damned.

I have a W900A from 2013 and I'm wondering if I get PS4 Pro and don't change my reciever to a 4K passable model, will I still receive the super sampling from the pro outputting to a 1080P set? Or is the Pro a lost cause for me?

From what I understand, the Pro will still give me better features, but I want to be sure before I fork over the dough.

Holy shit these LG HDR demos
I'm in awe, just watched them in my dimmed room at night.
Its so surreal to actually get "realistic" lightning and be blinded by the sun

SONY WHERE ARE THE HDR PATCHES

And to think, more expensive models will give you an even better experience... :O

people that hook up their PC to this tv, especially with a nvidai gpu, what is the native resolution of the tv listed in the nvidia control panel?

btw, HDMI input need to be set to enhanced to so the Xbone S to check off all the 4K features. At least that was the case for x850D

I've calibrated my Vizio at home once, regretted it by the next morning.

A calibrated display in a controlled environment is a better idea.

Also after using a calibrated Flanders Scientific Display I can never trust any television. I really wish TV's got rid of 95% of their "features" too.

A great display calibrated correctly for your living room will look fantastic though. Especially if out of box settings are torch mode.

How does one do the best calibration by themselves? I have a 1080p Sony 800C. Great set but its time to get it calibrated.

If its best to pay, any companies that specialize? (aside from Best Buy)

HDR is really great but it has to be seen in person to be understood. Pictures of HDR look washed out and bright but the truth is that in person, those lighter portions of the screen are glowing and vibrant and everything is just really breathtaking.

Trying to get ready for the PS Pro. Wondering if I will need a new receiver as well. I have a Yamaha RX 377 that has 4K Ultra HD pass-through. Does that include HDR?

Do you have a link to those LG demos?
You can find them here http://demo-uhd3d.com/categorie.php?tag=hdr

I've yet to see the Sony demo because the download speed of the site is pretty slow. Will get it tomorrow. If anyone knows about other HDR content sources, please post them here.

FWIW, Plex was unable to stream these LG examples so chances are you are required to load them from USB in the TVs media app.

Also to add some more impressions, both 720p and 1080p content looks pretty nice on the TV too (from YT/Netflix respectively).
