Final Fantasy XV: Looking back at the earliest trailers, are we getting the same plot

The video above is a nice compilation of all the trailers released for this game so far (save for the latest from TGS/Uncovered/e3).

It seems that some of the scenes found in kingsglaive are still present here. Like the boardroom scene meeting with Noct's Father. Also this shot seems to indicate that we are still getting the main story beats (Home is under attack, Noct and the gang flee). Also some early footage of open world battles in the wild + city battles vs the behemoth. So....

Save for Luna, are we still getting Tetsuya Nomura's intended story?
 
We are getting the same concepts, but the story and narrative have been rewritten to fill a transmedia narrative with a core game and multiple products instead of multiple games.

There were other ideas that didn't fit with the current team developing the game and were discarded, but everything shown to the public during the Versus era was intended to remain in the final game.

No. Nyx wasn't in the script of Versus XIII, the entire Kingsglaive is an addition from XV.
 
No? This is FF15 directed by Tabata, not Versus directed by Nomura or 15 directed by Nomura. Nomura is not even on the project anymore, and has not had anything to do with it for more than 2 and a half years at this point. Tabata already has admitted to changing the entire story and many of the character designs/motivations/places in the story, with the argument that he can't follow Nomura's vision and be expected to do the same things someone else would do.

There's been some revisions of course but we won't know just how much was changed until they tell us.
 
It's changed. Better we judge ffxv as a Tabata game then a Nomura game directed by Tabata. Original name appeared to be Romeo and Juliet with shades of mafia whereas this is a tale of noctis and buddies trying to deal with big problems by supporting each other.
 
It seems like the same outline of story. Just the invasion was moved to pre-game, and the Romeo and Juliet aspect was de-emphasized.

And the thread where people can complain about the makers of a Japanese game that started production 10 years ago not being in on the modern feminist movement. Now we just need one more thread for the people obsessed with jaggies and the rest of us will be able to talk about the actual game!

I don't think its all of that.

No OP, this is not the same game Nomura was directing, no you should not expect Tabata to keep things the same just to keep up the allusion of consistency, its his work, not Nomura's, he can change whatever he wants as long as it comes out.

The dissidia writer is writing it, Nomura and Nojima don't get credit for the rewrites, Tabata and Saori do. Yes Tabata has admitted to changing the entire story with multiple rewrites to come up with something to fit a single game, as Nomura wanted multiple games with different plots.

Simple. No accusatory tones, no pointing fingers at anybody in regards to being better or worse.
 
Nope. And that's ok, FFVersus did not come out as a consumer product. This one is. Let's judge FFXV for what it is instead of what it isn't.
 
Nomura originally said versus xiii might have multiple sequels. Pretty sure they had to adjust the game now, probably why we also have kingsglaive.

What is it with shitposting instead of contributing?

I for one am sad that we some of the changes to this game (yes, Stella and prob the Noctis bullet shield scene) are gone. I will say that Nomura probably wouldn't have gone with a character as shamelessly t&a as Cydney.

I am contributing. The statement you bolded is quite apt. It's not that I don't understand the gripe, it's that apparently, some of you don't understand that the rest of the world us still catching up. Give it some time. Constantly bringing it up only serves to dull the message.

Is that even worth asking? It's not his game anymore and hasn't been for a long time, changes will have been made by the director as their methodology could be very different. Personally, I'm not even sure Nomura's intended story would have ever released. We'll be covering the major story beats apparently but the feel of them could be different to what Nomura envisioned of course and there will likely be things he hadn't planned, as well as content he had that never made the cut.
 
What we CAN assume, is that a few of the bigger story beats were re-purposed for Tabata's 15, and reused in the plot. So it somewhat resembles what we saw before, but its nowhere near the same.

You could not compare Stella as a character in the story and Luna's character in the story as they are two different people.

I bet you would not even recognize Noctis's original character put side by side with Tabata's version of Noctis.

Nomura designed a cooler type protagonist who is very subtle, in line with how he usually designs things. That's where the dark design comes from, the batman voice would not have been out of place for this character.

Tabata's Noctis on the other hand, is a far more emoting kind of character, we see him stirring over his father leaving everything to him, yell and raving about it, being in conflict with his teammates because of his reluctance, and generally being more of a much lighter teenager type of protagonist.

Cidney was around during the Versus days FYI, just like Araena, although their roles were presumably much different than now. And definitely don't have anything to do with how Tabata and co have portrayed them in this game.

Since Cindy is a Ferrari design, she's most likely been around in since the days where Nomura was the director, along with Aranea's design. EDIT: Ha, beaten.
 
I think the biggest perceivable change isn't actually Luna. If you count E3 2013 as when "FFXV" marketing started, to a casual observer the dialogue over the footage could conceivably have been part of when they're trying to get back into Insomnia, rather than in it and trying to get out. To a casual observer, the girl in the mugshot montage could ostensibly be Luna. The marketing 'still works', kinda.

To a casual observer, though, the face-off at the treaty signing changed from a suits-with-swords vs armor-with-guns motif, which I think was so core to Versus XIII's aesthetic. Kingsglaive may have started production earlier, but up until JF2014 the old version of Regis was being portrayed in media.

(And yes, while it is completely possible for a video game character to grow a beard, change clothing and neglect to slick up his hair, and while Dapper Regis does show up in that one flashback where he's getting out of the car, it's the overall sum-of-its-parts aesthetic portrayed in the signing scene that I'm talking about)

edit: just to pre-empt some further discussion (since I'm heading out to TGS for the day, won't be around to partake discussion), I'm very well aware the dialogue literally says "we need to get the crystal" and "as for the Prince, kill him on sight", which implies a much greater immediacy than the narrative shown in recent trailers/gameplay. Hence, casual observer.

I'm not sure what you're saying here: that XV isn't the same game as Versus, except for the gender roles which were apparently in lock 10 years ago...? You can't have it both ways.

I do agree a lot of this criticism is premature, purely because we need the final product to decide where to direct that criticism. But the criticism itself is valid and it's regressive in comparison to where FF was a decade ago or even a couple of years ago: Ashe's protrayal in XII, Lightning and Serah's portrayals in XIII trilogy were much more progressive than what we've seen so far of Luna. So it's not a case of SE playing catch up, but this specific product somehow regressing to older tropes.

And this is talking about the actual game. It's my most anticipated title, but that doesn't mean I and others can't be critical about it and its development progress.
 
I dont think so, I think a lot of the invasion stuff which assume used to be a part of the game got cut out and put into kingsglaive for either time constraints or pacing reasons.
 
Yes and no, but that's partly a side effect of re-purposing a trilogy into one game as well as sticking a different director on it.

The JF2014 trailer was downright malicious in its attempt to lull Versus XIII fans into believing that there were no changes made to the script after Nomura's departure. The timeline of the events as detailed by Tabata, Nozue and others makes it clear that Kingsglaive was already in production when they released that trailer and yet they insisted on their story. The way they handled the transition from Nomura to Tabata was incredibly poor.

Yes, Versus XIII was going to be a story told over multiple games. After Tabata took over development they went back and re-wrote the story so it could be told in one game since it would be pretty bad in my opinion for a mainline Final Fantasy game to end on a cliffhanger, even FFXIII had a proper conclusion in it's first game. They also changed designs and other things, Stella/Luna, Regis' design, Insomnia being westernized and the Kingdom of Lucis' doesn't look like it's run by Yakuza anymore.

Of course they could have changed the overall story and events that Nomura had planned but that's almost a given when you change staff and basically soft-reboot a project like this. Aside from the stuff we know via comparing trailers of Versus to trailers from XV we don't know how different the story of XV as a whole is compared to Versus since Versus never really got anywhere from 2006-2012. People on GAF can speculate but that's it.

I just don't know. There's not enough info about Versus overall plot aside from early stuff via trailers. In the end that project is dead and what we have now is FFXV. For me at least that's just fine.

I wish Nomura cut the trailers for XV though.

A) I can have it both ways because it's two different things.

B) No one is saying you can't bet critical.

Just as I can be critical of the community. The issues I refer to aren't imaginary, they just bring out some of the worst in people and at best can be described as beating a dead horse.

The least harmful is the graphics talk. Most of the people involved there are genuinely just offering some solid observations. It just gets old when every thread ignores the content to fixate on it.

And it gets old when the same people keep taking every opportunity to use Luna to broach the topic of feminism in general. A subject that I'm sure you've noticed carries with it a great deal of emotion. This emotion leads to circle jerks and witch hunts at a predictable rate. People are often talking over each other and anyone who doesn't fall in line gets involuntarily demonized (admit it, the moment you saw my post, you were expecting to be dealing with a misogynist).

I'm not saying it's not a topic worthy of discussion, I'm saying I'm glad it's in its own thread because it's a topic that tends to overshadow the content any of these threads are based on.

As for this thread, I don't think I need to tell you the reasons why it's long past time to let go of VS.
 
All we really need to know now, is if Tabata's end result for this project is good. It doesn't matter how different it may or may not be from Versus or even Nomura's initial 15 premise at this point.

If its good(even decent)and not shit, then that is a success story in my book.

You can tell the game has been repurposed to hell and back in promotional footage, designs changing out of the blue left and right....i just want it to be a natural looking game by the launch date, as long as the game shows no outward signs that it was a project stirring for 10 years, it will succeed.

Only Nomura can tell you if we are getting the same plot, but it doesn't matter.

What matters more is to get a game that not only satisfies the hardcore FF fans, but also the Versus fans that loved the original concept.
 
I just hope the plot will be great! It doesn't matter whose vision it is. But I am scared because I still do not know how FF13 could happen. It makes no sense, and it makes no sense that a nonsensical plot would make it through. Next to Robin Hood, FFXIII is the most jibberish well produced AAA production I have seen in my life, and like Robin Hood, you sense that the original script indicated something truly ambitious.

And if you do not know of Robin Hood, and how it started as Sherwood, then I suggest reading up on the scriptwriting saga of Ridley Scotts madness.
