No Mafia III Review Copies Ahead of Launch

Well, it's never a good sign. Doom just shows it's not an absolute indicator that the game is trash, but it still has to lower your level of confidence.

Games with release day embargoes don't always turn out badly, but unless there's a legitimate reason for it, such as large online components, then it does often indicate a lack of confidence in the product on the part of the publisher. I've been looking forward to this game for a while, and it certainly concerns me in this case.

I'm hoping the game itself is good, regardless of the technical issues.

Amazing

To me it seems that opposite is going on, people care too much that someone else pre-ordered the game. So people are bringing up the plentiful gameplay footage available that has brought them confidence in the game. I've seen more posts that say "people shouldn't preorder this" than "people really should pre-order this!" Haven't you? Even the OP tells people to not pre-order games.
Well, yes. I would tell you that too if I had to choose either one in a you-must-choose scenario, because only one of those options prevents from being potentially burned. At the end of the day everyone has to decide for themselves but in my mind - at this point - it can't really be argued that the subject of this thread isn't a bad look in one way or another.

It's fine. And worth your money from what I've played.

There's a danger of slight repetition when taking down rackets, as you have to cause X amount of monetary damage before a "boss" will come out to end that mission to take over a district but so far all the main line missions have either been pretty entertaining or slow intentionally for atmosphere.

I've no idea why they wouldn't give review copies to the "Big Guys" like IGN and Gamespot, maybe they felt bad since they didnt give them to the smaller outlets and went for parity?
The feeling I get was that it's just 2K being EXTREMELY paranoid and overprotective about Pirated Copies since its a high value triple AAA single player game that 2K has very high hopes for. They had the game on mobile PS4's under 2 layers of lock and key when they were traveling around to various outlets who couldn't make it to their HQ.

Is it as good as GTAV?
I can't tell from only 4 hours played but I can say there's no way this game is "bad" and posting buggy funny gif's is just as easy as with GTAV, so that's no real indicator, hell those things are in our opinion good for the game as it makes for funny videos! (as long as those bugs are infrequent as they seemed to be)
After playing it we felt it was a pretty easy buy in our minds, but can only say for sure after a full review.

I estimate that outlets will give it between 8-9's, maybe one or two 7's on the low end. Im sure the press will dock it for no multiplayer since they will compare it so closely to GTAV.

**Update**
...uhhh ohhhh...

My fear about the repetitive man line missions is becoming greater and greater here as I play. Purple? Do the Grind....Green? Do the same grind to bring that boss out....Yellow? More Grinding, in the exact same way....Orange mission? Guess...what? Some more grind.

I hope the main story missions can make up for this trend thats starting to pop up here, but perhaps this had a bit to do with the lack of review copies.

I hate preview builds that only show off the best of the game up front that makes me regret my positive outlook.
Revising the scores I think it will achieve, now i'm personally hovering around the 5-7 range, where I think the lowest scores will be 4 to 5's.

Good to hear. Do the main story missions feel up to par with those of Mafia 2? The game looks awesome.

I don't buy games that do not have review copies first. It raises a red flag with me. Usually when companies do this I end up waiting a few weeks to see how it is or if price goes down. DOOM did this despite being a good game I still didn't buy till I read enough review about the game a month later.

I feel like at this point there are enough examples of good games (Dying Light, Shadow of Mordor, Doom, MLB The Show, etc.) that didn't have advance review copies to not worry too much about this. There is plenty of gameplay video out there already to get an idea of what the game is like for those who are wondering if they want it day one.

My worry is filler content which I usually skip, and by filler content I mean repetitive missions which are basically carbon copies of each other, not fleshed out side quests which I enjoy along side the main story. This became a problem in Assassin's Creed games because by skipping the filler content I never had enough currency to upgrade my gear and abilities so I definitely missed out because I only wanted to do the main story and side story, do you feel this will be an issue in Mafia III from what you've played?

Does the city have more to offer than just window dressing like in Mafia 2? That was really my biggest complaint of Mafia 2. Mafia 2 had awesome graphics, great music, fantastic atmosphere, a good story and a huge city with nothing to do in it.

Thanks for chiming in. Our opinions on open world games usually gel, so the fact that you're enjoying it gives me hope.

I've only focused on missions, so I'm not sure. But there are icons on the map that indicate the locations of bars, strip clubs and stores. Don't how interactive these are, but there are icons.

Maybe Joe has seen more.

Also, I agree with what Joe has said about the game.

I don't buy the piracy thing. When was the last time a AAA game got pirated before release? Watch Dogs is pretty much the only example this gen I can think of.

Back to being hyped now.

I cancelled my pre-order because of this thread, I can just buy it later when the price goes down and I have more than enough games to play anyway

I think negativity will always follow a game without release day reviews. People are so quick to confirm that the game is utter trash, jank, a step in the wrong direction, full of poor open world time wasting activities, etc.

I've been hype since the announcement reveal, but I also recognize that the repetition of the city takeover mechanics can start to feel like busy work if the main story missions aren't crafted with care to offset the more mundane side tasks. I also think that Hangar 13's willingness to explore the Civil Rights era with a Black character is awesome, and promoting diversity in the crime genre is always promising.

Couldn't care about reviews. But I also have this sneaking suspicion that once solid scores come through, there will be a lot of back pedaling in this thread. Hope the game does well, commercially and critically.

I kinda feel like this will become more common with companies realizing they can get better pre-release buzz using youtubers and twitch streamers.

Thanks for the impressions joe. I'm mainly in it for the story.

yeah...october is packed so i think this will be one of the casualties for me. like a new AAA game every week i want to play.

I watched some PS4 Gameplay earlier and was worried how repetitive it looked, but it was the section Joe mentioned about taking down the Rackets.

Glad to hear the rest of the game is more exciting!

I watched a preview from Gamestar and they said you can't turn the post effects off. They said it'll probably going to divide the community of people that'll hate that and people who will like that because it fits the game. The journalists said it takes time to get used to.

Mafia 3 looks very arcade. I mean, see through walls in a game like this? This is going to affect some reviews.

Even on PC? I'm sure someone will figure it out if so.

They didn't specify. The colour grading was too muted for their tasted and it made the game look not that great.
Yeah, there's a muted look, a lack of overall sharpness. But I'm not sure whether you can change that in the advanced settings. My demo pc had everything turned all the way up, so I'd guess it's the look of the game. But that's something that needs to be tested.

I could've sworn I read somewhere that this was going to have a ps4 pro patch... But I can't find any info on that. Either way I'm thinking this is a definite purchase, loved mafia 2.

Yeah, we're not going to know for sure why they are doing this but it's definitely a red flag telling you to proceed with caution. I certainly wouldn't write it off, but if I had it preordered I would probably cancel it and wait for some reviews.

Hopefully it turns out well though. We've had too many big time disappointments this year already.

I don't give a shit about whether or not a review or no review in advance of a video game means, red flag, high beams, or whatever other stupid little term people can come up with...

If you can't watch the ten plus hours of Gameplay already seen in videos and not make a damn choice as to whether or not you are buying a videogame this might not be the hobby for you...

Let's see I like open world games-I will buy it 95 percent of the time-check

It's a time period/city in an open world game that hasn't been done much
-1968 Louisiana-Check

I can roam around districts, all varied, go where i want and do what i want, i can slow walk around town, I can drive cars, punch npcs, carry bodies, shoot npcs, have car chases with the police-Check

But mommy I have to wait for a review because my favorite gaming outlet didnt tell me if its good....

why so angry bro

Even if it is angry I kind of agree with him.

I don't really care what the reviews say. The game looks quite interesting to me. The setting is a big deal and I hope the game is good so I'm excited for it.

By far the most striking part of Mafia III is how slick and engaging its narrative scenes are. Cut scenes in action games are often something you want to be over as soon as possible, but I found myself actually looking forward to the 2-5 minute vignettes that bookended each bout of action.

Five hours wasn't nearly enough to pass judgment on Mafia III, and its worth noting that after the initial two hour prologue, we were jumped ahead 15 hours to give us a taste of the late-game content.

Upset the Giants are going to lose tomorrow, and its Monday soon.... :) But a four day weekend coming up...

Pleased to hear the story is good. It's what Mafia is known for, after all.

I think even if there is repetitive elements, the story should carry the game.

Pretty much all of those videos were made or set up by the developer. They're commercials. Don't make purchasing decisions based on marketing, because even a bad game can be shined up in ads.

Mafia 2 was real janky and I loved it. That gif is great.

Watched that PS4 gameplay video and didn't notice any framerate issues. Noticed some pop in though.

I don't mind repetition as long as it's fun. I've enjoyed quite a few open-world games that had a lot of repetition in the side-activities. It doesn't make or break the game.
