Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

I'm so disappointed. I'm 38 years old and I have no desire for a handheld console.

Sony and MS and getting to 4K and VR and Nintendo is stuck on barely better than Wii U graphics at 720p because they think people will still buy a handheld on 2017.

I don't get it.

Risky product in my opinion.
It definetly seems to be more interesting than the Wii U for a core gamer.
But the hybrid thing is not a powerful innovation that will get the mainstream market on board.
At the same time as a handeld, the tablet with the lateral controllers seems to be very big to carry around and not really kid-friendly, which has been a key market for Nintendo so far saving their ass even when things were going wrong.
As a core gamer I'm interested in the product and I like the idea of being able to play all future Nintendo games on a single platform but honestly I don't think this will be a success, it definetly won't cost less than 300$.

Looks great. Wish they didn't fill it with mainly old games though. I'm not sure how excited people will be to see Skyrim again, haha.

Got to see some new Mario though!

Well, it's a custom one

"Nintendo Switch is powered by the performance of the custom Tegra processor. The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards."

Scalable, eh?

This thing definitely gets extra power when it's hooked up to the dock.

anyone else think of this when they saw the design...

Need more details to enter full hype mode, but I'm definitely more excited about this than any of the other console tech announced over the past six months. It seems like individual needs might play big part in how appealing this is for consumers. I have two young kids and almost never get to use the big screen upstairs, so the ability to move my games around to wherever I want to play them in HD is really enticing. If I can buy multiple base stations to put one in my office and one upstairs it would be even more useful. On the other hand, if the only software available will be Zelda and some last gen remasters then it might be a tougher sell if they go > $300 or so for the entire package.

Like on the real the hardware and form factor is the best it's been for a Nintendo console since gamecube/64ish days.

The tone in general definitely feels a bit more nuanced then Wii and Wii U did

I might be in for htis

So, what's the chances for Red Dead Redemption 2 on this thing? I really hope it will be on par with PS4 specs-wise. If so, i'm on board for sure.

Thinking about it more, seems like a strange solution to Nintendo's woes.

So it's a tablet that connects to a TV.

But you seemingly can't actually use the tablet when using a TV.

So it's a tablet where you can't really implement touch controls for your games in a meaningful way.

If it gets 3DS/DS BC, will they be only playable on portable mode? What about Wii U games that use touch controls a lot? Same deal? And what about motion controls for Wii BC games?

This is all just completely fucking strange to me. They have abandoned touch, motion and dual screens in one go.

And frankly, this thing is huge. It doesn't really look portable to me.

wow look at the visuals! A nintendo game with amazing lighting??

It doesn't really look like it's doing all that much more compared to 3D World.

I'm guessing a Gamecube->Wii level upgrade, effectively.

Trailer blew my mind, best marketing from NOA in a long time, concept and gameplay were all demonstrated concisely and clearly.

I like that they're trying to bring back social gaming, remember LAN parties? I member.

Seriously, have some close friends bring their Switches over and play, this time without gimmicks. Hope it catches on.

there's some specs in there...

The Nintendo Switch’s gaming experience is also supported by fully custom software, including a revamped physics engine, new libraries, advanced game tools and libraries. NVIDIA additionally created new gaming APIs to fully harness this performance. The newest API, NVN, was built specifically to bring lightweight, fast gaming to the masses.

Gameplay is further enhanced by hardware-accelerated video playback and custom software for audio effects and rendering.

We’ve optimized the full suite of hardware and software for gaming and mobile use cases. This includes custom operating system integration with the GPU to increase both performance and efficiency.

What...it doesn't look like a Fisher Price toy. Holy crap, I came in here expecting to be disappoint and I'm leaving far more excited than I thought I could be.

Good on Nintendo.

Also, that FROM SOFTWARE in the devs line up.

Neat idea. Details will determine how it works.

The side controllers look too small to function as a separate controller each, in adult hands.

I'm curious how they're going to reach the kids market with this. 2DS is popular with kids due to the pricing. Don't see how a parent that would normally buy sub-$100-$150 handheld would spring on this. Feel like it's biggest competition is going to be tablets at a $300 price range, that do more than just play games.

Interested to see how well it does.

I am disappointed by the lack of grip buttons, a la the Steam Controller or Xbox Elite Controller. Also, by the apparent lack of backwards compatibility.

The Mario game shown briefly seems to be exactly what I've been asking for! Really want to see more of that.

I don't think every multiplayer game will work with those detachable controllers. Like fighting games, no way. Pokken, maybe, but not games like Street Fighter.

I do not know how I should feel about it. On the one hand it is great that Nintendo finally concentrates on games, pure games. However I do not see the advantages of this detachable thing. I mean basically this console got promoted like a smartphone. What puts it beyond that. There is already I controller for iOS devices which make your tablet look quite abit like the portable thing Nintendo has:

HJEM2

However I guess time will tell. Right now I am not very impressed. Too many old games in that trailer so I am curious how third party devs will handle this plattform. I mean if they sell it for under 200€ I guess I am in. But yeah, unlikely.

That's looks like shit, and iOS games will never, ever feel like games for a dedicated gaming system.

So I have noticed some air circulation vents on the top of the handheld. Could there be some vents on the bottom or even back as well? If so, could that mean something for docked power increase?

Really excited for this system, the hardware looks really thought-out; the concept looks rather appealing. I will be there day 1 of course, going to lay aside €20/week. Amazing piece of kit! Also finally asymmetrical analog sticks!!! I don't play shooters anyway.

Wow Nintendo really delivered! Social and local multiplayer focused like nothing before it! And Skyrim! on the go!

REALLY hope it's not more than $299. The only reason I'm somewhat hopeful is that you're pretty much just paying for the "tablet" + controller things. The dock seems to be "dumb" and just have a spot to plug into the TV and keep the tablet powered.

It's cute but already looks like it belongs in the console graveyard. Positioning it between Wii U and an Xbox just screens smartphone performance, as does the portable form factor. Seems they would have been better served by doubling down on the smartphone given poke success.

But yes, I heart Nintendo hope their cartridges live on forever.

will the switch work also as a tablet for internet, reading, straming movies, etc.? maybe with android? if yes im sold, if not i dont think ill buy it
