Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

you guys realize that none of the footage is actually running on the screens in the video right? It's all composite shots. Lol at people spotting low performance in portable mode from overimposed footage.

Even then you still got to question why they would purposely make it so the frame rate looked lower when in portable mode.

Kinda weird that they're showing it running Skyrim. Who's gonna buy this thing to play a five year old game?

How is it wrong?

If it's not indicative of the handheld portion's performance, maybe Nintendo shouldn't have shown that in literally the first reveal of the console?

Wrong because:

- game still in development
- console comes out in March 2017
- the game probably wasn't even working on the thing
- you're watching a video of a video
- Nintendo sucks when it comes to these details in trailers.

I mean, Splatoon also looked clunky, and it's fucking Splatoon.

Honestly, a lot better than I expected it to be.

Really cool concept, and for those who like to game on handheld this must be a fantastic proposition.

For me though, handheld gaming is not attractive in any way.

I'll wait and see how games are purely as a home console, but looks like another Nintendo console I'll skip and that's okay.

Fair play though, I think this is absolutely the right direction for them to go in.

My issue is this.

The main issue with the diminishing handheld space was the lack of a compelling argument why anyone would carry one in the age of smartphones. Handhelds were losing that argument. The "console style games on the go" argument was lost with Vita already, and people decided 99 cent smartphone games were preferable.

What does this do to change that issue? What is the hook? People can play all third party games on more competent hardware elsewhere, and more portable games elsewhere. So you end up with the same problem as before, not compelling most of either audience.

At least that is how i see this playing out. Unless Nintendo has some remarkable marketing for the Switch.

I agree.

I'm excited for Switch, there's a good chance I'll buy one if the price is reasonable enough, I think it's probably the best move Nintendo could have made with their next platform given how they're being squeezed from two directions (mobile and PS/XB/PC)... but I'm really not convinced that it'll appeal to many people outside their current, loyal fanbase.

Are people seriously complaining about the name?

It's possibly the most ingenious title for a game system that has ever existed.
It's... Okay. I think something different but with a similar spirit would have been better. But oh well, at least it's not as garbage-tier as Wii and Wii U.

Nobody?

You don't buy a console for third-party titles.

Having third-party titles is nice though.

Also, maybe you missed it, but they're releasing a remastered or whatever current gen version of Skyrim sometime soon, maybe next week, I dunno. It's not like Nintendo's showing gameplay of Skyrim for no reason.

- Game still in development that had solid performance in the hours upon hours of gameplay previously shown on what I think was a Wii U.
- Exactly, the console is only 5 months away.
- Then whoever threw the trailer together did a shit job.
- So?
- Then they should git gud.

Kinda weird that they're showing it running Skyrim. Who's gonna buy this thing to play a five year old game?

Because it will have hardware worthy of a five year old console.

Nobody?

What kind of nonsense are you talking here?

It all makes sense to me, at first glance.

1.) Releasing a "proper" console seems redundant at this point.

2.) They won't have to follow the upgrading-model of the other consoles

3.) This kind of mobile/hybrid-gaming seems to be the road they almost went with the WiiU

4.) PC and/or PS4 + Switch seems to be pretty attractive combo. It feels like a fitting "quality of life" product for this generation. Personally I'm more of an oldschool gamer. I like my PC and some solid games but the concept could work!

Now it all depends on the price!

I actually think Switch is what Nintendo wanted the WiiU to be, though technology at the time wasn't ready yet, nowadays instead mobile hardware is reaching level of performance almost on pair with home console

YAWN

Ask me which Shakespeare novel is best
It looks like one of the retail display cases leaked from a GameStop.

Thats so retro and fantastic.

I have a a question though, me and my girlfriend like to play co-op Monster Hunter quite a lot. Would we both be able to play it on one Switch system, or would we have to buy separate ones? Im just a bit confused with how multiplayer works.

I hope the dock doesn't contain extra horsepower. I don't want a compromised game on the go. The lack of a dpad when going portable is a killer, but I'm sure they could sell a controller attachment that has one.

This thing has zero appeal to me other than the Nintendo IP that will be locked to it.

It doesn't look geared towards kids. Doubt many parents are going to be comfortable letting their kid take the core of their probably $300+ console out for fun. Looks too big for adults to carry around in a pocket comfortably. It's like something you'd carry in a mini bag.

The only uses I see out of it are plane/train/bus ride, taking a shit, and letting someone else have the TV while you play. Might be good for a lot of people, but the toilet option is about the only use I'd get out of it.

I would love to be able to play Nintendo games again, but I'm not buying another console that will frankly be under powered and that I won't use much outside of a few Nintendo IPs.

The telling things will be:

- Is there a chat system? Nintendo's, Skype, Discord?
- is there MORE than Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll?
- is there cross play with Xbone and PC?
- can this handle Xbox one ports?
- App store?! Kindle reader, Instagram, Kik and Spotify would be smart!

It's not "cool" but it's snappy and very Nintendo. Think of the marketing slogans "Switch on!". It tells you the purpose of the console in one word.

Also, I don't see where people are getting the "sexual name" thing from. Remember how the Wii U was "P-U"?. Didn't last too long.

I think you're right... Also, they had the same issue with Gamecube, they had Wii in mind, but couldn't make it work at this time.

I see this somewhat differently. I see the Switch not so much as a portable in the traditional sense.

To me some of the most compelling and innovative console features of the last few generations are off-TV play, remote play, and cross-save. But none of the implementations of those on previous systems were great experiences. Off-TV play worked well on the Wii U but you couldn't take it out of range of the base system. Remote play on the Vita was a great idea but in practice it has lag issues and isn't ideal for all types of games because of missing buttons. And cross-save never worked automatically and instantly in most games that supported it outside of maybe Rogue Legacy.

With the Switch, it's solving all of these issues in one motion.

To me it's not about being able to play the same games on a more competent or graphically intensive platform. It's about the convenience of being able to play in a multitude of situations. Someone else wants to use the TV? Fine! Want to get in some more game time before bed? Easy! About to go on a trip when a game you've been looking forward to on console just came out? Bring it with you.

That's pretty damn compelling to me, over graphical fidelity and smartphone gaming.

Yeah. That's where I'm sitting. I don't know if this thing truly has mass market appeal. But given Nintendo's current predicament I feel like it's the avenue that makes the most sense. Portables still have a market in Japan. Less so in the West. Nintendo games still have a market here. The hybrid route seems like the least bad idea to me. I don't think portable only is going to be too popular outside Japan. I don't think they can make a powerhouse console that competes with Sony/Xbox One. So, here we are.

Uh, yeah, a LOT of people do. Most people cant afford to buy multiple consoles in one generation. So they get the one with the most games.

Damn at all the negativity at this thing lol The thing looks sleek and simple as hell.

I don't know man, i think the reception has been pretty good. The initial impressions especially. A few reasonable concerns about , and few shitposters, but i think nIntendo has passed the first test, in general most of the impressions i have seen have been positive.

Considering how susceptible (rightly/wrong) Nintendo is to criticism around gaming forums, i think today is a success for them.

My Thoughts:

1) Handheld + Dock $299
2) Handheld + Dock + Middle Thingy + Pro Controller $349

Wouldnt they need to middle thingy (lol) if your gonna dock to the tv to play games

Otherwise your only can play with the two joycons

I think if Nintendo wants to hit Mass Market they should go

Portable only - Handheld station + Standing station for screen and your joycons + Pack in Game - $199 or $249

Hybrid - Handheld screen + joycons + stand + Middle thing + Pro Controller + Pack in Game - $299 or $349

Because this is all target footage? Framerate can change dramatically in the last few months of development.

Anecdotal but the 4-5 people I've shown the trailer to were sold on it instantly. None of these people have owned Nintendo systems for years. Talking over a decade. I don't know if this will have mainstream appeal, but at least with my circle of people this is already getting way more buzz than the Wii U ever did. At this point, I think that's a very good thing. The messaging is solid so far.

I agree. It remains to be seen how compelling others may find these items, especially when just looking at it from the outside, but lower the barrier to playing a game is certainly a good way to keep people engaged and interested.
